Just a reminder to everyone on the list.
A joint effort by Tri-State Delorean Owners + Delorean Mid-Atlantic
will be held @ The Auto Center in Westwood, New Jersey this Saturday
April 8. It will start @ 8:00 am and go to whenever. There will be
food so it would be nice if you let us know if you are comming
so we can make sure we have enough.
Rob Grady will be attending so he can look @ your car.
We will also offer door adjustments if needed and any other minor
work. The Auto Center has 2 lifts for our use and there is room
inside if it rains. There will also be a class on the internet
for those who want to see more ways to use it.
If you want to get in touch with me directly call @ 201-659-1680
daytime for directions or info. If The weather holds it looks
like we will be having a good turnout. This has been a popular
event in the past.

Subject: The Resurrection of Vixen continues...
Hi All,
Well, the engine is just about done. My last chore is to install the
oil return lines for the turbos. I had to drill through the engine
block in two places to install the adapters. That's not an easy task.
Sure, drilling through the aluminum is no problem, but approaching an
engine you've spent the last three months building with a huge drill bit
is a bit disconcerting. So... with hesitant hands I drilled the
required holes, only to find out that they were way too large. It seems
that there is a slight difference between the 'old' twin turbo kit and
the 'new' style couplings. Oh well. I'll figure something out to seal
the adpaters in place.
A couple of questions for y'all...
1) What is the thickness of the material on a new Centerforce Dual
Friction clutch friction plate? On the used one I bought, it has about
1/8" of surface between the face of the material and the bonding
rivets. Not having worked with manual trans's before, I'm not sure how
thick it should be to begin with. 1/8" seems a bit thin to me...
2) Has anyone ever hooked up a "Turbo Saver" preoiler unit? I don't
have the instructions for the wiring...
3) Is there a difference between the Volvo PRV oil pan, and the D? I'm
assuming there is -- the gasket I got seems way wrong...
That's about it. Things are moving along nicely. =)
Oh, and almost forgot... The website is updated through week 21.

I just bought a new automatic antenna from Houston to replace mine that
stopped going up and down. The old antenna had a separate single yellow
wire along with a white wire with a brown wire in a special connector. The
new antenna has a red wire, a blue wire, and a short black wire.
Anyone know how I'm supposed to make the connections ?

Subject: Re: early ulster car
The silver paint on the "DeLorean" embossed section of the rear bumpers was
hand painted by Joe Murray at the Plant in Belfast strictly for photographic
purposes.
I asked the same question to Mike Loasby the DeLorean Chief Vehicle
engineer. Joe Murray replied that the paint was added for promotional
purposes only. None of the cars left the factory with stripes, paint or
silver paint on the embossed section of the bumper. The only cars to leave
the factory with color was the 2 Gold commissioned cars.
There is a film of the cars in the factory. On a particular car shown the
"81" early style hood with continental lines and gas filler access ALSO had
an Embossed "DeLorean" in the lower left hand side of the bonnet. It is
stamped in the hood.
On the "82 & "83" cars this was incorporated into production with the
addition of the raised stick-on plate, common of the late cars.
The hood was shown on a production DeLorean. However I have only seen
this hood on film, and while searching the warehouse supply, alas its
whereabouts are unknown.
There were many changes to the car over its short lived life. Many were
internal component changes. The only noticeable difference is the hood and
the color of the wheels.

Subject: magazine featuring DeLorean
In the April edition of "Im-Practical Classics" on page 108 there is a
cartoon of a man in a junk yard buying parts for his RHD DeLorean.
"If the door locks on your DeLorean are broken, look no further than the
Austin Allegro for your replacements."
BTW we should send in letters to the editor for some of the incorrect
information published in this article. "the plastic steering wheel looks
tacky and cheap." These wheels were prototypes from the suppliers without
leather ONLY for engineering purposes. I have photograph of a warranty tag
from VIN 710 replacing this wheel for a production wheel with leather.
Also the "Live the Dream" advertisement uses incorrect photographs of the
preproduction car instead of the factory car.
Additionally, the section "The Lotus Position" lists the incorrect title of
Ivan Fallon & James Strodes book. The Book title is actually "Dream Maker.
The rise and fall of John Z. DeLorean." This is a great read with excellent
in-depth detail.
Ever wonder why DeLorean never put a picture of the car in his biography?

Hello DMLers!
Long story short... while we have the wheels off to be media blasted and
powder coated, where is it correct to put the jack stands? The jack from the
car is not even high enough for the stands anyway, but if you can get the car
high enough, where do you put the stands (short of buying three more jacks,
my dad is saying)? Thanks a lot!

Dave,
When you shined the black light on the instrument panel, was the
transparent face still covering the panel, or was it removed? Glass and
also (I think) clear plastic tend to absorb UV light very efficiently. If
it was still covering the panel, try shining the black light onto the
exposed gauges and see what happens. I really like your idea, by the way.
Creative.

How difficult is it to remove the rust from a DeLorean frame. It is an issue most of us will have to deal with when the epoxy cracks and water gets in. Naval Jelly/Converter can convert all rust on a frame to a black inert oxide. A number of coatings are available that work much better than the old epoxy. And frames can be welded to add extra strength if needed. Has anyone on here done this in the recent past (5-15 years) with success and satisfaction?

The biggest problem that you will encounter with the D is not regular
maintenance, but extraordinary maintenance and possible accidents. We can
disagree on this list as to if a front left fender is 2K or 4K, but if you
damage it (or the hood- no more are available with flaps or with lines) it
will be mighty expensive. And if something should happen to the engine
(such as the fuel distributor) or you mess up the seats or need a new dash
or binnacle from leaving it out in the sun, you are looking at 500.00+ for
any of those repairs. It is everything that you would face in an ordinary
car, but probably at least significantly more expensive

RIA 7122, RIA 7123, were the two first cars ever to be made in Northern
Ireland, one was an auto one was manual, there were the first "test cars"
they were driven around the clock by volunteer members of the Ulster Car
club, that had no heaters or other creature comforts, they were just used to
see what would break or pack up first. A friend of mine Brendan from
northern Ireland was one of the team, I have a copy of his driving licence
singed by Mike Loasby, dated 20th Jan 1981, and a photo of him at the wheel
of RIA 7123. I assume that 7124, 7125 were the next one's off. I don't know
what the chassis numbers are, but I believe the car in the Ulster Folk and
Transport Museum is one of this early batch.

Subject: RE: Rust
I have had experience with this.
The front end of my car had rust all over it. I was able to polish off all
the rust. Some areas were I felt the metal was weak due to rust, were spot
welded to re-enforce it. I haven't finished the car yet, so I haven't been
able to road test it, but I am sure that the spot welding will work out
well. Of course in order to spot weld, I had to remove the epoxy. I
undercoated the car to prevent rust.
Hope this helps.

How difficult is it to remove the rust from a DeLorean frame. It is an
issue most of us will have to deal with when the epoxy cracks and water gets
in. Naval Jelly/Converter can convert all rust on a frame to a black inert
oxide. A number of coatings are available that work much better than the
old epoxy. And frames can be welded to add extra strength if needed. Has
anyone on here done this in the recent past (5-15 years) with success and
satisfaction?

I also did this to my front end two years ago. It's written up on the
web site at http://www.dmcnews.com/Techsection/framepaint.htm
Someday I'll put up some pictures.
To remove the rust I used a combination of wire wheel, scrapers, and
chemicals (industrial version of naval jelly, usually called met-L-
prep or something like that). Then paint with POR15/Wurth Rustguard
and then Rustoleum to get the color right. Be sure to get inside the
front frame as much as you can. There is a boxed in area in the
center that you have to drill a 1" hole to get into.
Most important thing is to get at it all. I completely disassembled
underneath the front end of the car from the gas tank cover forward,
leaving the frame completely exposed. Took the opportunity to
sandblast and powdercoat or paint everything I took off. This took
about 3 months of weekends.
