I stopped at Pep Boy's a couple weeks ago and ended up taking one of the
kids that worked there out into the parking lot so he could check out the
car. I got a couple of the usual questions, but this one surprised me:

"They made the car out of stainless steel so that they could smuggle the
drugs, right?"

I've heard lots of strange but honest drug questions, but I've never heard
anyone think that the car was specifically designed to smuggle drugs. I
quickly corrected him and left him with great respect for DeLorean the
car, and most importantly, DeLorean the man.

I don't know what good it could be, but I believe the reason our club (the ETDOC) has had such a growth in the gatherings is the informality of it all.  Yes, Aaron does an AWESOME job of organizing these events, and they are always held at nice places with fun things, but for the most part it's just a bunch of friends getting together to have fun, and constantly bringing new people into the fold.  Many times we don't know where we're going to eat the night before the gatherings.  And this is why we're getting the reputation that we have.  Even though the club is based around the car, it's not always "centered" around the car, moreso the people.  Maybe this can help you out!

First of all, I'd like to thank Jason for his first-rate writeup,
complete with
great photos. When the time comes to replace my accumulator, I will
be very glad to have it.

Second, I would like to take the occasion of its publication to give a
plug
for contributing to the DMCNews Technical Information Library found at
http://dmcnews.com/techmain.htm

Articles like Jason's deserve to be preserved and kept accessible, goals
that
are not well served when they are scattered  around the Web at random
sites.
Items that make their way into the TechSection are well-organized and
should
remain available indefinitely.

In my experience, Dave Swingle is incredibly responsive when offered
material for inclusion in this archive (especially if you send him a
pointer
to nicely-formatted HTML). But he can't just copy stuff there unless
the authors offer their permission.

The TechSection is not the place for random, half-baked ideas, but when
we
are talking about polished, well-written articles of wide interest
(Jason's
accumulator piece is a great example, IMO), I think that submitting them
to
Dave to be considered for the TechSection is one of the most valuable
ways
we can all contribute to the DeLorean community.

I have to humbly make a correction to my recent post regarding the front
sway bar. It's been a looong winter and I finally got a chance to look under
my car again. The sway bar is mounted with the bar offset toward the REAR of
the car. I should have added that the bolts should be re-Loctited with 242
Loctite and torqued to 35nm or 26 ft lbs. Sorry.

We certaintly don't want to hold back anyone who has the energy,
initiative and skills necessary to develop a solution for a problem
area of our cars.  However, debating the relative merits of NPN vs.
PNP transitors or the necessity of bypass capacitors for certain
integrated circuits, as fascinating as those subjects can be, are
not of general interest to the DML.  It is very easy to create
a new mailing list for a very specific topic and invite list members
who are interested in the subject to join.  Once the solution is
complete or there is significant progress to report, we will be happy
to moderate that through to the list.

Some of us are technical, and some are not. But part of the value in the list
comes from each being allowed to rise to thier own capabilities. If it's too
technical for you then hit delete and move on, but don't hold the rest of us
back. We'll all benefit from an open design that has passed the scrutiny of
those that know. I know that the vendors would like to be the primary
supplier of all our needs, but although we do need them, we also need to rely
on ourselves in many areas. It seems that in many instances we're each
reinventing the wheel so to speak. We'll all benefit by working together.
We're a talented bunch, and if we communicate, and share we'll be able to
solve a great many of our upgrade/fix issues more quickly and economically,
and have a greater understanding of whats actually going on.

I know that sometimes, someone with a good idea will be approached to team up
with a vendor, rather than just giving it away to the list in an open
fashion. None of us is going to get rich doing either. Although sometimes the
scope of a fix is benefited greatly by vendor involvement. But sometimes good
information and options are held back by proposed alliances that never really
materialize, and they just tend to slow everyones  overall progress and
benefit.

I think I've learned that the best thing to do is just give it away to the
list. I've benefited greatly in the past because of this and intend to post
everything I've learned and done (with EFI for example) whenever possible.
I've got some catching up to do in this area.
Soon I hope.....

Jason - My car had a starting problem. It would usually start fine and

restart fine but often I could not restart it after a short trip although it

would start right up with a little push. If I waited a while it would

restart but it was very frustrating. My problem was finally diagnosed by

Don Steger in Garden Grove, CA. It turned out to be a bad ignition switch.

At the same time he found that the previous owner of my car had installed a

duplicate set of ignition wirirng all thru the car in an attempt to solve

this problem. Since the new ignition switch - It has started perfectly.

David,

You said:

"In general I disapprove of just replacing parts blindly."

I assume you may be referring to my straight forward analysis that the

problem was due to a defective fan speed resistor. My response is based on

both knowledge of the circuit and experience with servicing a specific

problem. In 16 years of servicing DeLorean electrical systems all instances

of fan motors working on speed # 4 only, is a result of a defective #3

resistor or broken connection in the resistor set. Whenever I suggest a

single component as the cause of a problem I am quite certain my prognosis

is correct.

Yes; you are absolutely correct when you say: "You really have to do a

little troubleshooting to try to narrow down the source of the problem."

That's OK for people like you, me and our electrically knowledgeable

counterparts, unfortunately many list members have little experience in

electrical trouble shooting. Suggesting to jump a relay with a paper clip is

far beyond what most owners fell comfortable attempting.

My suggestions take into account that many owner's don't mind spending a few

dollars if they can correct a problem safely with a minimum of effort.

Jason,

maybe the cold start circuit is the next place to go.  perhaps your
thermotime switch (mounted in the driver's side of the waterpump) is broken
or shorted out and it causes your cold start valve to fire under any starting
condition.  you could be starting your engine too richly with the extra fuel
going in and flooding the engine out. check the switch itself as well as all
the connections to it.  i'm not good at electrical stuff but i'm sure if you
hook up a voltage meter to it you could tell if it was shorted out or turning
on when the engine is hot.

Rob Grady once told me that if you take a look at your thermotime switch
there is a little brown dot on the side of it.  if the dot is flaking apart
or cracked or damaged, there is probably damage to the thermotime switch.  i
don't know how reliable that is, but it's from the guy who would know!

good luck,
Andy

These parts are used, but still in a good shape. Some of the items were replaced mainly by cosmetic reasons and some just for the heck of it. A few parts are new, and a result of wrong parts numbers when ordered. I'd hate to throw any parts away, but I can't store this forever, so please make me an offer.

I'd really like to sell it all together in one bunch.

1 Digital Clock (working!) NEW

2x A-pillar trim driver's side, grey, front windshield (may need some new fir tree fasteners)

2x A-pillar trim passenger side, grey, front windshield (may need some new fir tree fasteners)

2 Stainless "rails" for roof sealing (both sides)

2 Sunvisors (both sides, grey)

2 Loop handles for both doors (grey, with metal rings - for early DeLoreans)

1 Wiper/Indicator Switch

1 Seat Belt Buzzer

1 Centre Console Armrest (the holder for the ashtray and window switches)

1 Tray for washer bottle

1 Washerbottle w/defect motor

1 Driver's side metal armrest - holds mirror switch/lock button/release handle
(will need a new coat of black matte paint and a polish to get rid of superficial rust - this item is no longer available)

2 Original dome lights (working!)

Subject: Roof Seal Squeaking!

Last summer I replaced my roof seals. It was quite a job, had to drill out the rivets, remove the T-panel and install the new roof seals on the stainless rails. I've heard that the function of the roof seals are quite limited since the DeLorean has a good drain channel, but still I'd like it to have the perfect look, so I want those roof seals in place.

My problems with the roof seals are as follows: The driver's door is slower in opening since the roof seal is "sticking" making it difficult for the door to open. At the same time this makes a terrible squeaking noise! The passenger door is fine however. Yes, the struts are new and torsion bars adjusted. This is simply a case of an annoying roof seal.

Of course the problem had to be on the driver's door which is the door you use the most (read: Murphy's law)

I tried to use some kind of oil on the roof seal in order to get it more slippery and not sticking, but no luck.

I finally decided to remove the roof seal on the driver's door and install a new one.

Still, I wanted to find out where the squeaking noise came from. By using a razor blade I started to cut the roof seal (it will be replaced anyway) and I found out that the the roof seal had trouble in bending, resulting in the squeaking, irritating noise. The exact place was at the very end of the roof seal (towards the rear of the car). This is the area where there are two bolts for the hinges and the wire loom that enters the roof.

I'm puzzled as to why this happened on this roof seal and not on the passenger side!
Still, I might have installed them different when I did it.

The roof seal itself is shaped like a "U", and last time I changed the roof seal I might have placed it upside-down. Could this explain the squeaking noise? My guess is the the "U" is to function as a drain canal, is this right? Or is this suppose to be the other way around (perhaps making the bending of the roof seal easier when opening the door?)

I really need help on this one since I cannot see (on the passenger side) which way the "U" is supposed to be. Right now both sides look very flat on top. So - will the "U" face upwards (drain canal) or downwards?

And one more question - I have lots of trouble with my T-panel. It just won't hold down.
I have tried with lots of silicone and pressure on top, and 24hrs curing,  but after driving the panel always rises to a hunchback look. What can be done to correct this???

Best wishes

didn't need to hear about it and deleted the post.

Apparently, it was good enough for the Allante and the Prowler groups

not me offering the product but, a member of the Allante group that
had secured it for a price that was half of the going rate.
Anyway ....

The hot start problem was something that I also experienced and I
went through about $3,500 before we found the actual problem.  I'll
not bore you with the details but in short, we changed everything in
the fuel chain and then we figured out that it was the fuel
distributor.  Unfortunately, that is the most expensive part in the
system and it turned out to be the culprit.

After it was changed the problem went away and now everything is
fine.  I mentioned this to someone else with the same symptoms and it
turned out to be the same problem for him.  Hope that this helps and
I hope that they don't decide to "edit" out my response.

A heated rear window was designed into the car prior to the addition of the
rear louver. The louver created a large closed area surrounding the rear
window that allows sufficient heating of the rear window from engine heating
to drastically reduce the possibility of icing.

In over 260k miles of driving my D I don't believe I used the rear defogger
more than a handful of times. Even during winter in the northern states.

As Rober said: "If the engine is warm, and you have to drive through flood
water, the engine compartment will instantly steam up. So then the Rear
Defroster will definitely come in handy!"

Those are probably the conditions I experienced the handful of times I
needed the rear defogger.

Just to toss in my $0.02 into the mix (and someone feel free to jump in
and beat me if I have this wrong), but the hot start is generally
indicative of a failure of the fuel system to maintain system pressure for
*some* reason. I had a hotstart problem, and there was a rather obnoxious
fuel odor as well. Had steeled myself to replace the fuel pump, removed
the fuel pump cover and...

...fuel pump was totally submersed in fuel. Yes, those *are* electrical
connectors under that fuel, officer. Yikes.

All the fuel in the system was draining back into the fuel pump boot
(not to mention the fact that fuel was spraying everywhere while the car
was running). No pressure == no hotstart. Retorqued the dome nut and
things *seem* to be okay; juries still out, but it's definite *better* at
the very least.

Sometimes is really *is* the simple things.

Scott, I am sorry also that your post didn't make it through, All I can say
is, before people start replacing $3500.00 worth of parts in the fuel system,
Call or email me. I may not have all the answers but I do a lot of work on
the fuel system and might save folks a lot of money w/o throwing money at a
moving target.
On the side of caution, if your going to put chemicals in the gas you may be
asking for trouble, That's why I say, if your going to put Berrymans B12 in
the gas then drive it out. Then refill the tanks and drive some gas through
to get the chemicals deluded. There are several O rings in the Fuel
distributor and if one of the chemicals attack them, then it's rebuild time
$395.00 exchange . Chemicals can also turn the adhesive on the diaphragm to
powder and render the fuel distributor leaking and flooding the car. Your
best results is to put no chemicals in the gas. We have a 20 year old fuel
distribution technology and rubber seals will desolve.
My point to this is, be careful on chemicals.

Jason, Raise the control plunger a 1/4 turn to the right to enrich the
system. Then check the pressure on the system. It may be holding the control
plunger down. If it doesn't rise, then no gas will go to the injectors. The
control pressure regulator may be bad. That's why I would do a system
pressure check. Be sure also to look for any vacuum leaks.

Gee  <Blush>  thanks for the compliment...  WebDesign is my passion.

I have no problem with anyone re-posting or copying the "article" providing
credit to the Author.   I wish everyone would do something like this so
everyone can see the wide variety of procedures an Average D owner may be
faced with.  Although my Fuel Accumulator may have been "text book"  I am
sure others may have had to replace fuel lines or deal with stripped bolts
lines etc....  I have bee tinkering with a Hand-on Tech section with
pictures of everything and it would be a good place to illicit other's
experiences.  I try to document everything I do to a vehicle (as you could
probably see my Diablo Kit I am working on)  I will also re-post the link
since it appears to be chopped off after I posted it...  Now if I can just
figure out the Hot Start Problem  ARGHHH

First of all, I'd like to thank Jason for his first-rate writeup,
complete with
great photos. When the time comes to replace my accumulator, I will
be very glad to have it.

Second, I would like to take the occasion of its publication to give a

Yes, It's almost showtime, and in this case, I really mean SHOW TIME.

Ken was in the Chicago area this past weekend, so several members of
the Delorean Midwest Connection got together with Ken on Friday.
(sorry this was a very last minute thing, so no advance posting)
There were eight of us for dinner, talking about the Memphis Show.

Of course, since Ken loves to do spur of the moment trips and meet up
with Delorean enthusiasts, we took full advantange of Ken's very tired
condition and got some extremely interesting information regarding a
few surprises that will occur at the Memphis Show.  Although we got
the information out of Ken in a tired state, we did promise not to
divulge the exact surpize events, but we did not promise not to hint.

Getting back to the SHOW in the Memphis Show, Ken was not just kidding
when he said there would be a lot of entertainment in addition to the
information posted on the Deloean Car Show website.  If you do not
come for the Deloreans (some of the ladies?) you will be more than
happy that you came along, especially for one of the entertainers.
And for the guys, you will see much more than just Deloreans.  Ken
has something planned, especially for the young guys in the crowd, and
the guys who still think they are young (probably covers them all).
(Hint: I think even Bob Dole would like it)

It would be hard enough to put on a show at this level even if you
had enough time, working at your leasure from home, but Ken has been
signing entertainers and making final arrangements 1500 miles from
home and has only been home a few weeks in the past 6 months.  If Ken
is willing to make this type of effort to put together a show like
this for US, the least we can do is REGISTER as soon as possible.

If you plan on attending the show, REGISTER NOW.  I am personally
contributing a very special raffle prize, and depending upon the turn
out for early registrations, you may need to register before May 1,
2002 to be eligible to win this prize.  Ken pays for the show with the
registration and raffle money, so let's do what we can to help him.
There will be more than one very happy raffle prize winner this year.

REGISTER NOW and see you all in Memphis.

Later,
Rich W.

Subject: Re: Re: Re: Fan Sequencer (delay box)

Hi Mike

Just wanted to plug the list I created for this purpose. It's at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dmc_electrics/

Although I have to warn everyone who's been keeping an ear to the ground about this delay
box - I'm going away for 2 weeks at the end of this week, and although I'll have the
prototype working by then I am unlikely to have found the time to write it all up.

To answer the specific "why re-invent the wheel?" question: The function of the FanZilla
is elegant and electronically quite simple, once you've sourced the right parts! I am
doing this purely for my own selfish reasons of not wanting to spend $210 on a FanZilla.
There are also several other electrical/electronic projects that the DeLorean will
benefit from - and I personally don't have the time to create a marketable product on any
of them. I'm happy to spend a bored hour at work now and again writing my findings up for
all to benefit from. And I have the webspace to do it on. It's that simple.

I understand entirely that not everyone wants to follow the "nitty gritty" of the
development pricess - but equally there is a large group of those who do - I notice Dave
Swingle's one of the first signees to the new group BTW :-)

Best Wishes

Martin
