Subject: Comments on the DML
I don't know who is making these posts the last couple days. I would hope
future posts bashing any vendor or person would be scrutinized. A comment
made regarding a service facility or parts supplier relating to a product or
experience is fine. That is when the post is signed and the source is known.
It appears obvious to me that this person sole intent is to bash PJ Grady's
while making it look like they are truly seeking advice on the DML. I doubt
this person is being truthful and am sure there intent is to flame. I would
be surprised if the person had ever been to Grady's. I agree with Marc that
all posts should be signed and somewhat verifiable or they should be
rejected. (Note: This goes for anyone commenting on any supplier or vendor.

Subject: Refurbished costs....
There has been some talk about refurbished DeLorean's. Well having
the flu and being insainly bored I added up the costs to practically
rebuild the DeLorean. (Replacing Entire Brake system, Engine,
Transmission, Entire fuel system, Entire front and rear suspention,
Entire electrical system, All A/C and heating, All new steel pannels
Front and rear facia and All new interior would set you back aprox
$45,000 and a lot of time. Yes this is a little extreme and I doubt
it is ever done. For $8,300 you could replace the entire interior.
Which when I purchase my DeLorean(within next 2 months...fingers
crossed)I plan on redoing the entire interior. Yes that money could
be better spent on mechanical work. But for my purposes of only
driving the car to pick up the occassional ice cream and loop around
town, I dont have to concentrate so much on perfect mechanics. New
interior would be very nice. And maybe I could get that new car smell
too! Has anyone completely replace all interior components?

Dear Les,
You are right, the positive cable is the closest and easiest to
reach and disconnect. That is also the cable that one would hook up
the battery disconnect switch to. This is the cable that I switch off
when I need to work on the car and the electrical is a concern.

Dear Tony,
I'll throw in my 2 cents as well. I am a pretty good ameteur
auto mechanic. I've rebuilt engines for Mustangs, replaced front
suspensions and clutches and done brake jobs. This job all comes down
to the studs and if any break. I don't think I would try it myself
unless the engine was out of the car.

On DOC UKs website there is a photo of a cruise control set up for the DeLorean:

Well, just by one amazing coincidence, I found exactly the same cruise control in my Volvo Options Brochure.
The match is 100% with the cruis e control photo on the DOC UKs website.
FACTS: It's a cruise control for Volvo 240, 1986 models (B230F)
The partnumber is VOLVO 6842 476
It looks like an exact swap (size, length etc) with the left DMC indicator switch, yet I have no idea of how to install it ;-)
Funny, in the same brochure there is a speedo from the Volvo 240 that is a 100% match as far as the white number lettering and marking (font type and size) goes on the speedo. This speedo goes to 200KM/H, but does not have the smaller blue lettering for MPH. The base for the speedo-needle is also the same, yet the speedo-needle itself is orange.

what you want, if you think its a mock up then I suppose he got his wife

I am in the market to buy a 'toplift'. This is something that you drive
your car up on, start a hydraulic pump, it lifts the car to the ceiling, and
then you have room underneath to park another car. The whole thing can then
be rolled around on casters. Does anyone have any experience using these
with DeLoreans? Since the doors open upwards, this puts a cramp in things
when you are storing cars vertically. The one I am looking at lifts the car
to a 6' clearance underneath. This isn't quite enough room for the doors to
open all the way. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other brands that
lift a car high enough so that a DeLorean parked underneath can have the
doors open fully. I went out to measure mine with the doors open, but then
remembered that the thing is still up on jack stands while I finish the
brakes. Silly me!
I'm thinking that as a worse case scenario that I could put a car up on one
of these then turn it sideways and put it at the end of the garage stall.
Then I could just poke the nose of a DeLorean under it and leave the rest
unobstructed for the doors to open.

As we enter the month of December, and Christmas approaching fast, I thought it would be fun to come up with a "wishlist" for Christmas/the new year regarding new DeLorean products/accessories that Santa could come up with (read: DMC Houston) :-) Are you reading this James? :-)
Some of these suggestions have been mentioned on the list before, some of which you could properly build yourself, but - I think it would be nice if a vendor came up with a few new gadges that could be installed easily (plug-and-play, not plug-and-pray!)
At the same time it would set a new DeLorean "standard"... No, I'm not disappointed in my DeLorean, but I'd love to find new things for it! I know there are some "replacement/cross-over parts", but I'd rather pay more and support a DeLorean vendor for a branded guaranteed DMC part than some other part taken from another car.
What accessories I would like to see in the near future (yes, I'm very, very optimistic!!!):
* Door Launchers (isn't PJ Grady/Zilla working on these? When will they be ready?)
* Heated sideview mirrors with wide angle mirrors
* ABS Brakes ;-)
* Power Steering ;-)
* Stainless Frame - come on all vendors, at least check it out. If Bryan Pearce's frame is as excellent as I think it is, then start promoting it and carry it for sale... Sooner or later we will all need completely new frames.
* Hoods with gas flaps / Hoods with lines
* In general - more replacement of the "little things" with all-new stainless components
* DeLorean Sunglasses
* Temperature gauge showing the temperature outside
* Illuminating instruments like on new cars
* DeLorean Cruise Control
* New dimming feature of the roof light (like on newer BMWs - you shut the door and the light FADES out very slowly)
* A specially designed DeLorean Alarm System
* Electronic speedometer
* Foglight gadget that would make use of the rear brake lights as dual fogs
So - now I would like to hear if anyone else on the list have other suggestions for improving the DeLorean's comfort... Come on, this time of year is wishing time! Suggest anything to see if there's enough interest. Let's help the vendors on deciding which new accessories may be popular and easy to sell among us owners and enthusiasts!

In addition to the toothpaste idea mentioned in another reply,
products such as Brasso, silver polish, and jewelers rouge that are
used for fine polishing of metal also work very well for plexiglas and
clear plastic. I used to have a motorcycle with a plastic windshield,
and I used Brasso to keep it clear and free of scratches, etc. If the
hazing on your lense is on the surface only, this polishing concept
might help.

originally owned by Roy Nesseth. I have no idea if it could have been a

Walt,
I use a lift (Auto Lifter), but I can not open the Delorean if parked underneath due to
as you suspect limited clearance. I do however park it on top with my old SL
underneath. (backed in to windshield with the top down). With a standard 8 foot
ceiling in my garage, I also can not open doors when the car is fully raised.
Essentially it is for storage only. To open doors fully , car below must be removed, and
lift lowered.
But at least two cars are garaged in one stall!

If you are considering a lift as you describe to roll it on castors
requires a FLAT and perfectly SMOOTH floor. If it is a 2 post as
opposed to a 4 post it will be difficult to open the doors when the
car is raised. Be careful as any car parked under the Delorean should
be covered so any leaks do not damage the car underneath. Make sure
you have enough vertical clearance with the car raised so that you
don't hit the ceiling but still have enough room underneath for the
car.

Mark I guess I should have you proof-read my posts. Thanks for
correcting again. That is the best feature of the DML, it is
self-correcting. I forgot that #502 would be the third car after #500
and #501. I still think that if #502 is an "operating" car it is still
worth more than just the price of an average Delorean mainly for it's
historical significance. Cars that have appeared in print have an
increased value, an example would be Johnny Carson's car.

Gary - what you ask is pretty much impossible. There are
over 1000 subscribers to the list. Most of which, the
moderators will never correspond with, much less meet in
person. Most of the userids used to subscribe to the list
are not names, nor are names (verified or otherwise)
required to become a subscriber. The best we can do
is allow people post within the charter of the list
and let the other list subscribers come to their own
conclusions. Sometimes posts will be critical of
vendors, moderators, or other list members. As moderators
we try to keep personal attacks to a minimum, but there will
always be situations where people will take offense
where the moderator on duty will not.
Most of these situations are self correcting. If a poster
ticks off enough people or is determined to be less than
"real", that person is quickly and effectively ignored
by the rest of the list. Once they stop getting responses
to provocative posts, they usually get bored and move on
to stir up another list.
Remember - on the internet, nobody knows your a dog.

IMHO you are approaching this the wrong way in regard to what you
would do first. If you go the cosmetic route you will look very nice
stuck on the side of the road! Do not ignore the importance of having
a SAFE and RELIABLE car even if it is to go around the block. Budjet
some money for the inevitable repairs that will be needed on a 20+
year old car. From your little exercise you can see that there are all
different levels of "refurbished". Obviously no one is going to
replace everything to refurbish a car. Many parts will be gone over or
rebuilt, not replaced. Even interior parts do not get replaced except
carpet and headliners, seat covers, and any trim that is cracked or
damaged.

I've found that to be pretty accurate, particularly with hi-way driving.

Get some additional ideas and then set up a poll. Could be useful in encouraging a DeLo vendor to begin developing/selling a new product.
Personally, depending on price (of course), I would be interested in the following:
Updated illumination -- instrument cluster and/or center console. I think the factory illumination sucks.
Dimming feature on the dome lights.
Hood with gas flap (lines optional).
More stainless replacement stuff. PJ has a few things, but there is plenty of room for improvement.
As a final note, regarding the temperature gauge idea, there is an aftermarket rear view mirror available that has a small digital readout in the corner that can display both outside temperature and heading. It also includes an interesting auto-night-dimmer feature. I don't know how difficult it is yet to fit it to a DeLorean, but I will
be trying it out in the not too distant future. It is built by Gentex Corporation (www.gentex.com) and is sold through Mito Corporation (www.mitocorp.com) and any number of other companies like Dakota Digital.

Sweet! Nothing rusts faster than a typical heat stove! Can I get stainless exhaust headers with that? They rust just as
fast (but luckily are alot thicker than a heat stove).
There is almost nothing I hate more than rust!
