My driver's side strut is gone too (door opens too fast) so I am very careful and gentle with opening my door.  So far I've had nothing give way, but I like you am now freshly scared by this conversation.  I just wish there was someone in this area who could look at my torsion bars for me, adjust them if necessary, and help me replace my gas strut.  (Are the struts just as difficult to replace as the torsion bar?)

Hello all,

I am sad to say that because I wish to continue going to college, I must now
sell my DeLorean vin#1217.  I love my D, but in the end I had to choose
between an education or the car.  Check out the little web page I made up at
http://www.floodle.org/car.html  If you know someone who might be
interested, please pass on the url.  The car is an 81, with hood lines and
fuel flap.  It has ~13,000 miles.  There is a list of work done to it so far
on that web page.  The asking price right now is set at $20,000.  I will try
to answer any questions sent to floodle@xxxxxxxxxxx

:(

Subject: Re: Torsion Bar failure?

This is the land of the free and home of the brave ... feel free to be
brave!  The torsion bar is loaded with the door in the closed
position, and is relatively relaxed when the door is open.  I
personally know of one car where both bars failed, a couple of months
apart.  The failures happened while driving down the road with the
doors closed (obviously).  The only challenge was getting the door
open to get out of the car.  A strong guy can do it with a little
grunting, but if you're not so strong ...  No other damage occurred to
the car.  I personally have never had a torsion bar failure in my car.
I don't know of any injuries from a failure - the guy who owned the
car mentioned above said he almost had a heart attack when the bar
broke with a BANG just above his head.  The bar does not fly off
anywhere, it just snaps, and then is relaxed. The failures are
actually more prone to happen in cars with deteriorated gas struts
because people tend to over-tighten the bar to compensate for the bad
gas strut, instead of paying the money for a new strut.  "Pay me now,
or pay me later" is a good motto for this.  Good fresh gas struts and
properly lubed hinges will keep the adjustments of the bars to a
minumum, which is a good thing.  I very much appreciated the post that
gave the link to the Patent Office.  I was able to read the patent
information, and these torsion bars are designed to operate at between
80% - 95% of ultimate allowable stresses.  That is incredible!  But
... I digress.

We have a member in the PNDC who has two struts on each door ... a
smaller one at the front, and the normal one at the rear.  The
modification is relatively easy.  I will try to get some information
on how it was done.  I saw the installation, and it is quite slick.
This could take some of the strain off of the bars.  I know that the
couple had to exert more effort to get the doors closed than a normal
car.  Reducing the stress on the bars would probably allow this
configuration to work just like a stock door in terms of ease of door
movement.

After I cleaned all of the grounding locations, and reinstalled the
wires, I applied a coating of dielectric grease to the area.  It seems
to stay in there very well, and is actually designed to protect
electrical connections from moisture.  I also installed some extra
grounding straps between the engine, transmission, and frame.  They
expected the current to flow through the motor mount bolts in the
original design.  HMMMMM!

don't really like to coat connections as it makes them harder to
inspect and also messier when you do have to clean them.

Sorry guys, but I don't agree.  If you swap the bars end-for-end at
the same time you swap sides, the actuation direction would be
correct.  For instance, if the LH bar broke, you could install a RH
bar on the left side if you installed the splined end into the LH
forward hinge (with some challenging modifications to the hinge), and
the square end into a redesigned retention bracket in the back.  I'm
not suggesting that this is practical, but it is possible.

Finally it's here !!!    Check out - www.4koolart.com - and look at item #
K1404

The artist has been working on this Delorean "caricature" for us for about 9
months now and has finally added it to his wide array of car caricatures,
over 1350 different designs. It's available as a T-shirt, sport shirt, sweat
shirt, coffee mug, mouse pad and a very nice "A" size print which is suitable
for framing. And the finished product really looks much better then the shot
shown on the web page.

Makes for something neat to add to your Xmas wish list.

For future poll writers, be sure to give a wide variety of answers to choose
from.  Some of the polls that I have an opinion about I was not able to vote
in because there was not an answer available that expresses my opinion.  So
I simply didn't vote at all.

For example, the poll about adding the female voice to replace the
mechanical buzzer.  I don't want anything like that.  But the only choices
in the poll have me choose one type or the other or both.  For people who
want 'none of the above', there is no choice for that.  So the results of
this poll will be inaccurate accordingly.

Hi,

My friend recently told me that he spotted a DeLorean while watching "Just Shoot Me." I think it's on NBC. Did anyone else catch this? It might be the wrong program name.

I don't want to created a long thread. If you wanna reply, please e-mail me.

Thanks,

Greg M.

Well, I just got my models today. Both the regular DeLorean, and
the BTTF version. Wow! The detail is excellent! They were both
well worth the money! I'm also very pleased with the fact that the
regular version is based off of a real car with after market parts. It
makes it seem all the more realistic to me. From the CD
changer in the center console, down to even DMC Joe's
Overheat protector in the back.

Yeah, they are flawed in a couple of spots in as inaccuracies.
But the sharp detail and the affordable price far outwiegh these
little items. If I paid over $100, then perhaps I would nit-pick. But
the models really are worth it. I had to order them online. Every
single toy store here in town that had them sold out immediately!
Now I know why!

If you are thinking about buying one, I would highly reccomed it!

Group, Just to repeat my self from earlier this week. I have talked to the
company who made the bars and will be finding in the week or so if they will
remake a one shot last deal. If so, how many people would want them. I will
be taking a count and let's assume they will be at the same list price as the
RH. Price on DMC Houston is $386.00 ea.

I will say this about coatings. A lot of PC board manufacturing companies use
Crystal Clear Krylon to spray boards with that were going to be exposed to
the outside. Garrett Electronics that makes metal detectors used it because I
sold it to them. There may be something different now, but if you must this
is what they used.

Group, I posted several new parts on my web site today, The trailing
arm bolts, 12.9 Steel cad plated., A panel meter of constant
measuring the co reading of the car, a new not NOS water back which
has been hard to find or not at all. I now have new water pumps and
new backs. Delorean exact items. I also posted a picture of the fuel
filter bottom connection and the 14mm fitting banjo so some can see
the correct way to keep the filter from leaking and last a picture of
several pieces of hardware to identify and use as reference when your
trying to explain what a banjo fitting is to some of the people
behind the counter that thinks it's something you play. I went into
Sears the other day to get a new tip for my soldering iron and the
clerk didn't know what I was talking about. Wow, am I getting old or
they living in a sheltered world. No, neither they just don't know
what a soldering iron is.
