Subject: who knew?
I just had my exhaust manifold gaskets, my cat, and few other odds and ends
done at Houston... who knew it would change the way it ran? Quieter, more
power, smoother.... And I've been missing all this for over a year. Such a
big difference-- at first I wondered if they didn't sneak in some of their
power modifications! But, they weren't on the bill so I know it ain't so.
Dang it! should'a done that work long ago.
I notice that is "seems" to idle just slightly higher than before. Not
hardly much, but maybe it's all in my perception in the totally better sound
and feel.

Subject: Coolent loss
Willie,
A member of the PNDC had the same problem (coolent loss) After an intake manifold removal a hose that can only be accessed when the manifold is off was found to have a leak. Could you have the same prob? It was not evident where the coolent was going in the normal trouble shooting measures.

Willie, I would get a guarentee this will fix it or my money back. Injectors
can be cleaned to a certain extent, but normally if they won't spray
correctly or they are leaking, or the seal around them are leaking, it's
something else.

This does sound like a shift computer problem but ther are a couple of
things to check first. Check the fluid for the correct level and
condition, it should be betwen the high and low marks and shouldn't
smell burnt. Check the cable adjustment from the throttle spool to the
shift computer for proper adjustment. And finally check the wiring and
plugs going to the shift computer. Make sure plugs are seated
completly, connections are clean and none of the cables got melted on
the exhaust pipes. The gear selecter could also be out of adjustment
but not likely. Other possible but less likely causes are plugged
filter, worn fluid pump, out of adjustment modulater, all could cause
low line presure that improves as the fluid warms up. A definative
test would be to check the line pressure as per the Workshop Manual.

The short answer is that the shop doesn't know what the are
doing!!!!!! Get the car out of there and take it to someone who
doesn't want to "purge" your car (and in the process your wallet!).
The car is idling high because it is not set-up properly. Only someone
familiar with Bosch K-Jetronic and has a "D" Workshop Manual can do it
correctly. Try a Volvo dealer if you can't find anyone else and bring
a Manual with you. My guess is that you will need a complete cooling
system service and a complete tune-up to get the car right. The fuel
system is self-purging as far as air is concerned. In general spark
plugs don't arc (exept at the electode like they are supposed to), the
ignition wires can when bad causing a miss and a loud clicking.

The really, really, really, really, really, really, really early, and really, really, really, really late cars are just as reliable as any other DeLorean. Since these particular cars have traded hands so often the previous owners, as well as, the current owners have made an investment into the car to have them updated and maintained correctly...I say Correctly, as too often the statement applies here "there are DeLorean's & there are butchered, jerry rigged, P.O.S. DeLorean's" no matter what VIN range, year, or transmission designation.
To give you an example, there is a student here at the US Naval Academy who purchased an early 1981 #1554 from the public school district. The car sat for well over 15 years in the vocational school. The car was repaired correctly, and was driven across the United States from Maryland to San Diego California.
There are several owners of Automatic DeLoreans who find the Automatic very reliable and less of a headache than a 5 speed. It is your preference. I drove two automatic DMC'c everyday for 4 years...no problems.
In addition, Mr. Bernstein has over 500,000 miles on his automatic DeLorean.

Apparently, mine has 130,000+ miles on it but I cannot confirm that mileage for sure (just bought it over a year ago). I drive it many times a week and have yet to encounter any problems related to the mileage.

Hi,
I've always loved the DeLorean and I interested in picking one up.
I went through a lot of sites but none talked about major problems with the
cars.
I hear the engine design in general is not very good, but that's what I
heard about Volvos with that engine.
I am a hands on guy and would probably be doing most of the maintenance and
repairs (or upgrades) myself.
Just wondering what are the most common problems with cars both with
maintenance and general engineering faults.
As an aside I always thought the 1982 Audi coupe's front end looked very
simular to the DeLorean.

Many DeLoreans (including mine) have well over 100,000 miles, a few even over 200,000. If these cars were like many of the stories you have heard we would not have kept them this long. Study the archives and find an owner close to you for advice.

i just got my car today and it is awesome. the detail is allot better than the 1:18
sunstar model. the only thing that i dont like is the doors dont open and also the hood
doesn't either but i will get over it. the headlights, marker lights and tail lights
look like actual delorean parts shrunk. this car even has wrinkles in the seats, goldish
brown rear defogger lines, rubber tires, detailed underbody, gauges and heater/cooling
controls that have color to them and actually look like they would work, factory clock,
engine compartment stickers, a metal pin with the car number and the factory tape deck.
the sunstar model looks like it has a CD player if you look carefully.
i say thumbs up to this model and it is a definite buy in my book and it is well worth
the price. check it out at www.delorean.com

the story that popped up:
UK Enron questions turn to auditors Andersen
By Mike Peacock
LONDON (Reuters) - Questions about the British government's links with
bankrupt energy trader Enron Corp. took a turn Tuesday with opposition
politicians focusing on the Labor government's relationship with the firm's
accountant, Andersen.
In the United States, Andersen -- one of the "big five" accountants' firms --
is under pressure over its auditing of Enron and the destruction of thousands
of documents.
President Bush's administration is in the spotlight over its links with
Enron, and British Prime Minister Tony Blair's government is now also facing
scrutiny, with its relationship with Andersen the focus.
Ties between Andersen and Britain's ruling Labor Party date from before the
1997 election, when Labor was languishing in opposition.
Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt worked for Andersen's consulting
arm from 1994 to 1997, when Labor won office. A number of the firm's
employees were seconded to help the Labor machine before it took power.
Although newspapers are crying "sleaze" over Enron and Andersen, a Blair aide
said the government was squeaky clean.
"Nobody has been able to point to a single fact in either of these cases ...
that justifies such headlines," the aide said.
HISTORY UNDER SCRUTINY
Until Labor came to power in 1997, Andersen had been blacklisted from
undertaking government work since the 1980s because of its role as auditor to
the Northern Ireland-based automaker DeLorean, which, like Enron, collapsed.
That ban was ended soon after Blair's party came to power and Andersen has
since worked on various government projects.
The previous Conservative government pursued Andersen in the courts for
compensation, because of state money that was pumped into DeLorean and lost.
Blair's official spokesman said Tuesday a government review of Andersen's
status was in progress before the 1997 election.
The review ended just before election day -- recommending the government
settle out of court. Blair's predecessor, John Major, had no time to make a
final decision, leaving the new Labor government to decide.
Blair's aide said that after the 1997 election government lawyers called in
an independent law lord to mediate.
He ruled that Andersen should pay Britain 21 million pounds ($29.8 million),
far less than what the previous government had wanted, without admitting
liability. Both sides agreed.
The Conservatives denied they would have ever let Andersen off the hook and
have called for an inquiry.
There have also been parliamentary questions about what government work
Andersen had won since 1997.
Blair's aide said that question would take "weeks to answer."
Andersen would not comment Tuesday.
As for the links with Enron, the Blair spokesman said, "We are being
completely open about this."
The government produced a blow-by-blow account Monday of meetings ministers
had with executives of the collapsed Houston-based company and denied it
tailored its policies in response.
A Labor source said the party received no lump sums from Enron but that its
European arm had bought tickets for party dinners and sponsored one event in
the past, at a cost of 38,000 pounds ($53,710).
Blair's spokesman said Enron executives met four ministers but that the
government's energy policy hurt not helped Enron between 1998 and 2000 as it
blocked new gas power stations to help the ailing coal industry.
Critics say lobbying by Enron may have prompted a policy switch when the
moratorium was ended in November 2000.
But the government always said the block would only last as long as it took
to implement reforms of the electricity market introduced in early 2001.
