Many thanks for that idea. I may end up having to try that but I'd like to
do it without using a flame to avoid a possible explosion and/or fire.
Wouldn't you say that an explosion and/or fire could occur using that

I hope this thread isn't getting off topic, but since the DeLorean's
electrical system does not charge well at idle while the radiator fans are
running, it is important to select a battery that can stand up to this
abuse.
I seriously considered buying a deep cycle Optima for my DeLorean, but what
made me get the red top instead was a matter of higher cold crank amps and
the fact that I don't let the car sit for extended periods without use. If
I were doing it again, I just might get the yellow top since the Optima has
an incredibly high CCA capacity for a deep cycle. This is a relatively new
thing as batteries go -- combining spiral glass mat technology with deep
cycle chemistry . In the past I was accustomed to the fact that deep cycle
batteries just could not produce the CCA needed to reliably start a car. So
when I was shopping for my last Optima, I passed up the yellow top while
telling myself that the manufacture's claims seemed unrealistically high.
Another factor that I considered is that the DeLorean's CCA needs tax the
upper limits of what the yellow top can produce. I'm not sure whether or
not this could cause it to fail prematurely.
The tip that Jason quoted from the web site applies to all lead acid
(typical car) batteries in general -- not just the Optima brand. Deep cycle
batteries have a different chemistry that allows them to be fully discharged
for prolonged periods of time without significant damage. This is very
unlike typical car batteries (including the Optima red top) which have the
longest life when stored in a fully charged condition. A good way to think
of this is to compare it to storing milk. Storing a lead acid battery while
discharged is equivalent to storing milk in the hot sun. It will spoil
quickly that way. And to any degree that a lead acid battery is cyclically
discharged is just like repeatedly taking milk from the refrigerator and
allowing it to get warm. This all contributes to how soon the rest of the
milk will eventually spoil or how soon the battery will not have enough CCA
capacity left to start the car. This is why some people are so particular
about keeping trickle chargers on their batteries. It can make an enormous
difference in the life of batteries in cars that are seldom driven. And
with the DeLorean in particular, consider driving home with the a/c on,
radiator fans running & head lights on. Even with a high performance
alternator, there may not be enough current output with typical city driving
to keep the car running and keep the battery fully charged at the same time.
If you regularly subject your battery to this kind of abuse, don't expect it
to last very many years. Using deep cycle batteries in cars is not at all
customary, and I certainly don't know everything about batteries. Can
anyone say if taxing the upper limits of a deep cycle battery (as in
automotive use) will cause it to prematurely fail? If not, then my opinion
is that the Optima yellow top would be the best choice for the DeLorean.
Yet the red top Optima is still a great choice because it recharges more
quickly & with less effort than old fashioned wet cell batteries as well as
better tolerates being stored partially discharged and cannot leak acid on
the carpet or explode.
I really should apply for a job with Optima! :-)

If I remember correctly, the filler plug is on the right side, about 3/4
the way up - it has a square head, and access is good. Surely you can
get an open ended spanner to it and enough leverage? I didn't have any
problem with mine and with only 2500 miles from new and a long period in
storage, it had probably not been removed since the box was manufactured
I would disagree that heating it would initially help - letting it
subsequently cool may help. Usually you heat the surrounding area to
make it expand from the jammed thread, but in this case, the surrounding
area is the gearbox case and as such would make a wonderful heat sink!.
Can you get hold of some dry ice? If you're worried about using a flame,
have a go at substantially COOLING the plug to make it contract.
Personally I wouldn't worry about the careful and directed use of a
blowtorch under there. The heat from a butane flame is extremely
localised. You'l most likely create a fair amount of smoke from all the
penetrating oil and WD40 you've put on it though!

Well, I am finally back on the list and about to purchase another
DeLorean, having sold my first one a few years ago. Here are some questions
for you veteran DeLorean owners. Please don't hate me for asking these
questions!!! I know many of you are purists!
I want to customize my next DeLorean:
1. Updating engine - DMC Houston can take care of that...but any other
ideas?
2. Suspension - lowering the car is nice...any recommendations on shock and
struts (or any other improved suspension components???
3. Brakes - any ideas here??? Larger cross-drilled rotors? Any sizes or
brands?
4. Electrical updates - aside from the Zillas, any ideas for improving the
Lucas design?
5. Exhaust - IMPORTANT!!! Any idea of a borla or performace set up???
6. Air Intake - any K&N filters or cool-flo intakes???
7. Wheels - I want larger wheels and tires (especially in the front) 17inch
wheels??? and wider tires. Has anyone tackled this one??? I want greater
roadability and looks!!!
8. The question you will all hate - is there a method for painting a
DeLorean??? Doesn't it involve acid etching or prep??? if anyone has done
this let me know.
9. Cooling system - any low temp switches or thermostats available??? HD
radiators??? KEEP THAT ENGINE COOL!!!
I am very interested in sharing info on any ideas for making the DeLorean
"better". Obviously, it is already a great car...I just want to update it
more and make it more like the sports car it wants to be!!! Let me know if
any of you have ideas and / or are interested in discussing ideas!!! Thanks

My car is under wraps for the winter, but if no one
else gives you the info, I'll gladly get the
measurments for you. I converted my luggage carrier
to a bicycle carrier. My bike is an unpainted
titanium road bike. Get lots of comments about my
unpainted car and unpainted bike.
When people say "gee, you must have a bundle of money
to have a DeLorean and a titanium bike." I point out
that I am so poor that I couldn't afford to have
either one of them painted.

I have uploaded two pictures of a little thing I found in the trunk
of my Delorean. You can find them under 'Unknown Object'.
Is there anybody who knows what this is and where it's suppose to
go ? It's not very big (about 2.7cm x 5cm) with two little hooks on
each side. I've even tried looking it up in the manuals, but no luck.
I'm also a member of the Dutch DeLorean Club, but nobody there seems
to know what this is.

First, clean off all lubes and oils that you have tried and ues a macro torch, Sometimes they can be found a Wal-Mart. They are small and have a very percise flame. I dont think you'll have to worry much about "torching" your D if your are a little careful, so be very careful. D.Hughes #6860

I don't recommend changing the manual transmission oil unless you are
prepared to change several oil seals and gaskets (requires trans. removal
and disassembly). Like the clutch cylinder seals, replacing old fluid with
new can cause *rapid deterioration of seals & gaskets.
Keep in mind that the transmission gear oil is not subjected to the high
heat and pressure as crankcase motor oil. In over 17 years of record keeping
we have no reports of premature manual transmission parts failures (due to
wear) including transmissions with 150k miles plus, Several auto
manufacturers (Saab, etc.) say that it is not necessary to change the
transmission oil, ever.
DeLorean transmission removal is very labor intensive and costly, if you
have deep pockets and you feel the need to change the trans oil than do so.
If you decide to skip this service procedure and someone asks "have you ever
changed your manual transmission oil? ; you can tell them that "DMC Joe said
its OK not to".
PS: If the manual trans is removed for service you should replace the oil,
seals, and gaskets before returning the trans to service.

The DeLorean windshield uses standard automotive windshield mounting
procedures including rear view mirror attachment. If the installer broke

The other night I was leaving work, started up the car, and before moving,
rolled up both windows at the same time. As they reached the top, my radio
(aftermarket) rebooted. The headlights also dimmed, binacle dimmed, etc.
After letting off the window switches, everything was fine. I tried
pushing up on the window switches while I was driving and everything
seemed to be fine. I tried again at a red light and the radio rebooted.
When at idle that night, the voltmeter was at the tick below the 13
(ack!). At speed, the needle sits juuust above the 13 mark. I notice that
normally at idle (after driving around for a bit), the voltmeter shows a
little below 13.
What options should I explore? New, high power battery? The one that's in
it now is what came with the car when I bought it a year and a half ago.
Possibly a new higher power alternator?
BTW, the D-REX is quite impressive. I've seen the "before" pictures and
it's amazing that Rich got it to where it is in only 5 weeks. Great work.

It's a striker panel. It fits on the doors, and is what the courtesy
light switches hit when the door is closed. My guess is that it's
supposed to protect the switches from rubbing the vinyl on the
door panels from being damaged when the switches rub up
against them. The parts manual simply calls it "Plate", and it is
part # 108169. You can find it in section 8-7-1 of the parts
manual.

Before you purchase a single upgrade, you should first clean the
grounding contacts on your car. You would be amazed at how
much it helps! The quickest thing I found to work is foamy engine
cleaner. It will take the dirt right off!

Kevin - Thank you for spearheading some of these poll efforts. On the
TAB poll, replies are still dribbling in, but I was wondering if a
slight tweak to the poll might prove enlightening. The only "failure"
that was not mentioned in the poll was "bolts becoming loose", which
(in my opinion) represents a near-term future failure, and could
perhaps be viewed as a failure in and of itself. Loosening can mean
improper torqueing, but it can also mean bolt stretching and yielding
(which is bad). Just a thought to bring more data to the table.
BTW - Stay tuned for upcoming information on availability and
ordering for the new "TOBY-TABS".

My guess is that it is the cover that covers the engine cover release
mechanism which is located just to the left of center of the rear facia
on the inside of the engine compartment. Mine screws in place, but I
guess they could have made them to snap in place just as well.

Christian, The Delorean 150 alternator would cure the problem for the most of
it.
There are some other things you can do for the wiring to get the needle above
13 volts.

I could agree with you in not having to change the trans oil but there
are still some things short of changing it that could be done. Remove
the level plug and verify the correct level. Remove the drain plug and
install a magnetic if not already done. Drain some of the fluid out
and inspect for bronze dust, water, and metal chips. Feel the oil with
your fingers for grit and viscocity. If it is clean put it back in or
top off with a little fresh oil (A little fresh oil shouldn't affect
the seals). On the manual trans the oil not only is for the
transmission but also the final drive. Inspect the exterior of the
trans and final drive for any evidence of leakage by the seals or
gaskets, a little seems to be normal on most Deloreans, especially
where the case splits.

The Lotus design engineers did an excellent job on the wheel size spec.'s
for the DeLorean. Any alteration to the original size will result in
negative results.

Tranny filler plug unfrozen.
A most sincere thank you to DMC Joe, Less Huchins, D. Hughes, Martin Gutkowski and others who may have responded to my plea on how to unfreeze the filler plug on my manual transmission. If I had not already drained the oil I would have followed DMC Joe's advice to leave well enough alone as the car has less than 15,000 miles on it. After applying WD 40 and some stuff called Deep Creep, the plug came out tonight using vice-grip pliers. What a relief that was.

I think that your unknown object belongs on the lower door panel (of either
door). It is the piece that dome light switch hits when the door is closed.
The little hooks go through the upholstery of the door panel.
Hey, this would make a cool trivia game. Take photos of various odd
DeLorean parts and have a contest to see who can identify them.
