Have you tried looking up
http://personal.picusnet.com/dsontos
Click on, DeLorean How-To-Docs
Then click on, Painting Facias
I personally will not try painting my DeLorean. I can turn a wrench,
but applying primer, paint and clear coat is something I would rather
leave to a professional.
Thanks to Dave Sontos for the above web site.
Of course after several months or several years the web address will
change and the link above will be no good.
I'm all for the Yahoo! Groups DMCTech site to collect all technical
help/advice into one large lump. And you can purchase the Service &

Walt and group. Again I'm not making a case to save the door lock module, But
I finally made mine lock up also and it was in the position of the door
switch. So, If your carefully you might be able to avoid the problem. Also,
the smaller circuit breaker played a big part in the module not burning up.
It tripped very often till I caught it in-between locks and unlocked the
doors. If you still have the original door lock module and can't afford a
Zilla at this time, then put in the smallest circuit breaker you can I'm
going to try a 10 amp this weekend. I also talked to Bosch and the original
relays that were used in the module were silver contacts which is a softer
metal. The newer replacements are silver/nickle which is a much harder
material for the contact and are rated 30 amps in this application. I guess
my question is. If I'm able to use a circuit breaker now at 15 amps and can
possibility go to 10 amps, then the relay in the module isn't the problem to
begin with, it has to be that the circuit breaker doesn't trip quick enough
and that allows the module to burn up when the door switch sticks or is in
the wrong position. I'm not spending a lot of time with this, but I have also
talked to some others and found out that the modules must have been used in
random and they found the problem quick or early in the installation.
Thet as all for now.

Hello Walt,
Thank you for your kind words.
You were right on the mark concerning original lock controllers. However,
consider this...
Perhaps at some point in time you may choose to design and market a fairly
complex device.
When you do, you will be horrified at the real costs of the inventory &
qualified labor.
When you factor in the unpaid R&D time ( which is 10X more than you expected
) and tooling costs,
your head tends to explode.
What's worse are the unexpected ancillary costs which are out of this world.
Every time you reorder components you fight with vendors for pricing, but
all you hear about is price increases & or shortages.
And all this for SHORT runs.
YIKES !!!!
Conversely, Zilla products have NOT significantly increased in price in
nearly 10 years.
It is said that money is worth half of it's face value every 10 years. So,
in reality, they're now an even better deal.

Subject: Re: Door Lock Module (long)
One thing you must take into account in reedesigning the lock module
is the inductance it must control ie: the lock solenoids are coils
which when you try to stop putting electric into them (like when the
relay contacts open) the coils still have a lot of "electrical
inertia" re: inductance, so the current will try to continue which
results in arcing across the contacts. The heat generated will
eventually weld the contacts unless you oversize the contacts and use
capacitors to reduce the arcing. Using an undersize circuit breaker is
a very temporary solution. Circuit breakers must have a margin of
capacity above what is being used in the circuit (They are not meant
to be tripped often). They are primaraly used to protect the wiring
from overheating, not devices. If you find a circuit breaker to work
at this low (sensitive) level it will eventually get very sensitive
and start tripping at lower and lower levels so that it won't let the
coils activate. In cases where you need accurate and sensitive circuit
tripping you must look for a better solution that a mechanical circuit
breaker or a fuse, you will need a circuit capable of sensing current
draw and shuting down the lock module something like used in modern
amplifiers speaker output circuitry. (This just keeps getting more and
mote complicated!)

Subject: rank Delorean repairs
I am well into my search and hope to have My Delorean before the leaves
turn. One thing that I have found difficult to do is compare D's because
most of them (in my price range) have several minor problems. In order to
compare cars it would be helpful to hear how Delorean owners rank these
problems in order of how easy they are to fix for a NOVICE. So if anyone has
5 minutes they can make this a game and also see how other owners rank them.
I am lsiting the common problems that I see alot...
1) replace door struts
2) electrical wiring problems/fuses
3) window malfunctions/replace window motor
4) Facia repair/replace
5) a/c repair or recharge
6) replace headliner
7) replace speedometer cable
8) install fan zilla
9) install tank zilla
10) Stainless steel clutch cable
11) Fuel pump
12) re-cover seats
13) upgrade alternator
14) replace rubber lseal/moulding around the door
15) install lock zilla
thanks for any help.....mike c

Hi all
I'm in a small predicament. I need parts for my D that I can't get from PJ Grady or DMC Houston.
Has anyone out there Got the following from a parts car or just knocking around waiting for a sick D to need the transplant.
106341 Mounting bracket LH
106342 Mounting bracket RH
These are the main mounting brackets for a manual gear box. Mine have snapped, a repair job has been sugested, However one has already been welded once and to do it again would leave me concerned about its integrity.
If you have one or the pair please let me know, or if you know someone who may have a pair or one , again please let me know.

I've been seein some DeLoreans for sale recently and
those with "black" interiors all seem to have gray
carpet. The dash, console and seats are black but the
carpet is gray. Was this the way it was done? Was
there never any black carpet used?
Also, some '83s I've seen have all gray interiors
except the seats are black. Are these owner-changed
items or was this factory?
Just curious.

The only thing I've ever found with a date is a stamp in white ink on
the rear facia. Right side between the corner curve, and the niche
for the tail pipe. I posted a question about this some time ago as to
it's specific meaning, but never got any replies. I've always assumed
this date was stamped after the final inspection that OKed the car to
leave the factory, but I have no idea. Always been kinda neet to me
though. My car is stamped November 3rd, my Birthday is the 4th, and
in the BTTF movies, the DeLoren was struck by lightning on the 5th.
Anyhow, I tried to take some photos a while back, but they never
turned out. And since I never got any follow up on the topic, I just
put it on the back burner so to speak. Since owning my car, I've
looked at 2 other DeLorean's up close, and both had this same stamp.
More details are in my former post in the archives...

Well I'll be. When I first went looking for a replacement Idle Speed
Motor, I had recieved in an e-mail from someone stating the 760
wouldn't match. It was a simular style, but wouldn't be compatable.
So that's what I was basing my statement on. Plus Volvo's aren't the
most popular car here, so the newest I could find @ the junkyard was
an '80 of any model. So I had no way to verify everything myself. But
on the old 260's I saw, they had a completely different style
regulator on them. These were 2-wire regulators, with a spring
inside. And they and a 2 wire plug at that, so I don't know how you
could connect them to get them to work.
But in either case, I would only reccoment using the ISM off a junk
car to test only. When I opened up my old motor, I noticed inside the
brushes on the motor were covered in black soot since they were not
sealed from the air chamber below. Seeing as how inscets and other
little creatures like to nest in small places, and how the engines in
junkyards are left exposed, I'd reccomend buying a new unit to make
sure it's clean inside.

Hello Mike,
i rearranged the list of jobs you have here to give you some help. the
zillas are simple plug-'n-play devices. even a rice-boy could do the job! i
have experience in all of these areas except for a couple of the more
difficult jobs....
in order of most simple job to most difficult job:
8) install fan zilla
15) install lock zilla
9) install tank zilla
11) Fuel pump
13) upgrade alternator
2) electrical wiring problems/fuses ***these usually aren't too hard, but
could be an electrical demon..***
7) replace speedometer cable
10) Stainless steel clutch cable
the next jobs, which get more difficult, are fairly to heavily labor
instensive and may require a second person to help you:
1) replace door struts
3) window malfunctions/replace window motor ***if the little window is
off-track, that's a tougher job than replacing the window motor.***
12) re-cover seats
5) a/c repair or recharge ***depends on if you have to overhaul the entire AC
system. any decent shop can recharge the freon for about $100.***
6) replace headliner
14) replace rubber lseal/moulding around the door
4) Facia repair/replace ***if you have to replace it, then it would be down
here - if you just have to do something while it is still on the car, it may
be higher up***
hope that helps!

description of the model on the DML. So here it is:
as far as history of the models,
i have experience in casting various items for 15 years. i do it for a
living,
but the cars are done from home as a hobby,
my neighbour drives a delorean and i made it for him as a present.
things took off as he took it around the classic car shows.
he had 15 made to sell to friends an fellow drivers and i sell others on the
net etc.
it is still early days and i recon 35/40 have been sold, litteraly
worldwide,
with the bulk going out to the u.s.a.
i also make a lotus europa
vw beetle
bond bug
and am working on others. i only started all of them earlier this year.
they are cast in a 1 piece seamless rubber mould from polyester resin filled
with metal powder to replicate the stainless steel effect.
thats about it really.
hope you enjoy it when you get it next week
and remember................spread the word!!
look farward to hearing from you when it arrives.

For a NOVICE, this is how I rank these projects. I have done almost
all of them myself, and I learned as I went, but I learn unusually
well. If you can quickly pick up on things and/or have small hands,
downgrade the difficulty I list here a tad.
1) replace door struts - EASY
2) electrical wiring problems/fuses - EASY-HARD
3) window malfunctions/replace window motor - HARD
4) Facia repair/replace - HARD
5) a/c repair or recharge - MEDIUM-HARD
6) replace headliner - MEDIUM
7) replace speedometer cable - EASY
8) install fan zilla - EASY
9) install tank zilla - EASY-MEDIUM
10) Stainless steel clutch cable - MEDIUM-HARD
11) Fuel pump - MEDIUM
12) re-cover seats - EASY-MEDIUM
13) upgrade alternator - MEDIUM
14) replace rubber lseal/moulding around the door - EASY
15) install lock zilla - EASY
Also, when I ranked the hard ones, I did it for a first-timer (many of
these get extremely easy once you've done it a few times [I can swap
fuel pumps in 5 minutes!]) and while the concept of many of these can
be very simple, actually doing it can be a pain, and I included that
with the ranking. But anything I say as EASY, absolutely ANYONE can
do.
Hope this helps. Good luck getting your D.

Does P.J.Grady or any of the other suppliers sell the front / rear pairs of

D's with vin 10580 or after all have a medium gray carpet. This was

had a dark grey carpet. I would assume that the '83s with grey
interior & black seats are owner changed, but they could have been
assembled that way. After all, some '83s have the earlier style

Sounds like a good idea! I don't know how many D's I've seen with hood

Subject: Car won't Shut Off
My DeLorean loves to run so much that today when I stopped to get gas
and turned the key to shut the car off it decided it would keep
running. Not the sputtering, bad gas type of running but a smooth
idle as if the key had not been turned. I took the key all the way
out and the car just purred like it was still in the ignition. I
drove it home and used the clutch and brake to kill the engine. I
took the key out and the radiator fans and warning lights were still
on as if the car had just died but the key was still in.
I went inside to get a flashlight and dig around in the relay
compartment to see if there was something I could do. About the time
I removed the relay cover (about 5 minutes) the car shut itself down
as if the key had just been turned off. I restarted it and turned it
off when no problems.
Anyone know what my problem may be?
