Actually there was a third part of it which double nutted the sway bar to

Well, I took the car out for a drive today to test the cd player and
my voltmeter/door ajar light problem fixed itself. The cd player
sounds and looks great! The best part is it only draws 10 amps,
so it puts less strain on the electrical system than the stock ASI,
which is fused at 15 amps if I'm not mistaken. The whole system
also only cost me around $375, $225 for the player and $150 for
the speakers.

Subject: Craig Radio Flex Cable Repair
If you no longer plan to play tapes and just want your display working,
here are a few tips. First of all, as everyone cautions, you must be
able to solder well above average. The traces are close together and
you must get on and off quickly else the traces will lift up out of the
plastic and make you sorry you started the whole thing. The main
problem beyond that is that the traces are in such close proximity that
it's very easy to solder across two or three traces at the same time.
Here's what I suggest. Start from one side only, whichever is
comfortable for you, then just bare one trace at a time as you go along,
this leaves the traces in one direction still embedded in the tough
plastic and you can kind of "lean" that way as you solder. To bare a
trace, use a sharp razor blade, or equivalent (I use a carpet cutting
blade) and scrape only enough to make the joint, appox. 1/8th inch each
side. The heat of the iron is also important, I use a 30 watt with a
pointed tip (purchased at Radio shack for about $7). Too low doesn't
solder quickly enough and too high is too quick, there needs to be sort
of a rhythm.
In removing the display assembly, detach the return spring from the
case, not from the display, also, note the amount of tension, it's about
one turn, you should put the same amount of tension on the spring when
you refasten it. Not as important as if you were doing it with wires
and planning to play tapes, but why not do it right.
My prototype had all 16 traces separated, if you still have some intact,
it's very easy to check with an Ohmmeter to determine which need the
repair. There's a distinct crease where the breaks occur, no problem
finding that. I coated the finished repair with radio-TV service cement
but could be Duco or shellac or nothing at all, It's not going anywhere.
If this lacks clarity, let me know, it's hard to tell where someone's
skill level lies.

Hi all,
I am sure that I saw a DeLorean with some kind of body kit on it on
the net a while ago. Is there a specific body kit for the DeLorean
and if so does anyone know were I could get one from, and how much it
costs.
Also doe anyone know whether you can get hold of the outer door seal
of the roll rather than in pre cut lenghts?. It seems rather
expensive from all of the DeLorean vendors I have looked at on line
in comparison to other rubbers I have brought.
Thanks

Unfortunatly you cannot consider your method a "repair". Unless you
seal the cassette door so you cannot insert a tape (thereby deleting
the cassette player) the fix cannot last. No matter how expert you are
at soldering one of two things will happen. Either the solder will
crack at the flex or the traces will break alongside your repair. The
only "cure" is to either replace and reroute the flex or make up a
multi ribbon cable to replace it. Probably the most cost effective way
around is to just replace the radio with either the ASI or something
better. That still leaves the question of what to do with the clock.

Greetings all.. I am now in the market for picking up my first D, I
am looking to get a stick, due to better driving experience vs. an
automatic. Trouble is, Many places it is illegal to have a remote
start on a standard shift because if you leave it in gear and try to
start it, it may start moving and could run over somebody. My
question is, has anyone come across a security system that has the
proper sensors to disengage the starter if left in gear? I really
would like to remote start the vehicle for A/C in the heat, and heat
in the winter, due to the obvious lack of full-size windows. Most
systems only work on an automatic.

Contact any of the DeLorean parts vendors for a complete list of the
various recalls issued by the factory. You can also look at the

I'd like to find a listing of all DeLorean recalls, their importance, how to
tell if they have been performed, where to purchase & how difficult to
install. Is anything like this available? It would really help us soon-to-be
owners with the purchasing & "post-purchase-attention" processes.

Todd,
After undue amounts of suffering, I broke down and added a DIN sized cd
player to my D. While this was a great upgrade, the extra power overwhelmed
the stock speakers. The front speakers were a quick switch, 3.5 for a new
3.5. Not wanting to dig into the rear speakers, I decided just to
disconnect them. For mid-low end sound, I added a 8" in the storage
compartment behind the drivers seat. It is driven by a small amp which
resides next to the battery. Since the 8" speakers range of music is fairly
non-directional, it fills the car nicely. Down the road, the car definitely
needs some more fill, but this upgrade is a huge step up from stock. Good
luck!

No, not really, the most cost effective is to use the flexible wires I wrote
about a few days ago. Should be a permanent fix. This writing about
repairing the flex traces was based upon the only information I had read in
the archives or FAQ that told how to repair the display. In that case the
writer didn't say how to do it, he just said "do it." Since it was set in
stone as a what to do I did the how to do.

Re Remote starters. I have one of different brand names in each of two
cars...one in the Lincoln Continental and one in the DeLorean....I have had
the DeLorean setup for about four years. Both had optional kits for a
straight stick car and were legal. As I recall, the one in the D was around
$50 extra for this option. It is called "Auto Command Remote Car Starter".
This company also makes a module that is easily installed, called "Lights
On". I have this also. It is like the newer cars that turn the lights on
when it gets dark and off in daylight or when you turn the key off after a
small programmable delay. Both have been very reliable and have never
failed me. I rarely use the key to start the car. It sure is nice for
both winter and summer to start the car 5 minutes or so in advance. It
DOES cause a lot of puzzled expressions and questions when I get to the car
tho! Ha. In the D, I have it programmed to run the starter for 2 seconds,
and if it does not start it waits 20 seconds two more times if need be and
tries again.....The only time it has ever gone to the second try for ME is
in the dead of winter when it has not been started for a week or more. It
can be programmed to run the starter for 4 seconds or longer too. I have
the address for the one in the D, but I have not been able to locate the
address for the one in the Lincoln.
I have many "stories" re the remote start......the other day a lady said she
saw me go near the car and it started. I quite often just press the button
while in my pocket. I put something in the car and went back to another
store......she was still out there when I came back but this time with her
husband, and said she had walked all around the car to see if proximity
would start it! Ha. One day an elderly lady was near the car and getting
ready to put here groceries in her car when mine started up.....I did not
see her and was several cars away. I usually refrain from doing things like
that on purpose at least....it startled her so that she dropped her grocery
bag and it broke and I helped her pick it all up and out from under my car
even. She was not mad tho....thought it was pretty funny. Many located me
inside a restaurant and told me I left my lights on and my car is
running.....I usually start it about the time I finish eating and before I
pay the tab.
Let me know if you want the address or any further info.

Subject: Re: Remote starters
I personally would skip the remote starting feature. It's more for
show then practicality. If it were for warming up the vehicle in a
cold climate, it would serve a purpose. But chances are that if you
live in a region where it gets that cold, you won't be driving the D
in the winter. Granted the smaller interior of the D does warm up
quite a bit faster then other cars. But it's nothing that I would
consider unbearable. Plus since it is smaller, it has the ability to
cool down much quicker than most cars. A good running A/C system on a
D will do just as well, if not out-perform the cooling abilities of
other vehicles comfort wise. If it doesn't cool down as quickly as
you'd like, crack the windows to increase air flow while driving.
A better investment than the remote starter is the sunshade sold by
DMC Houston. It keeps the interior of the car MUCH cooler. Plus it
offers protection to the dash.
Another thing to think about is the safety aspect of things. To
enable the remote start feature you will have leave the car in
neutral. This opens up for too many problems. If your parking brake
was not properly adjusted it could slip, allowing the car to roll. Or
worse still is if you had to take the car into a mechanic's shop for
repair work. Even if you told the mechanic the remote starting
feature was there, he could forget. Against a wall or another car,
someone could start the car and cause a collision. Excluding damage
to your car, this could open up a whole new area of liability since
companies don't reccomend the installation of remote starters of
manual vehicles...
It is your car, and the final choices are yours when it comes to what
you want to do with it. So I'm not going to say what should or
shouldn't be done. But you've always got to think about the future...

Subject: Re: Remote starters
The reason remote starters work better on automatics is that they have
a neutral start switch so that you cannot engage the starter unless
the car is either in Park or Neutral. Although it is not as safe to do
it on a 5-speed any mechanic should be able to wire it in to work. You
are correct that it could be inadvertantly started in gear if when
shut off it is placed into gear. Generally most manuals when shut
down, unless on a steep hill, are left in neutral with the parking
brake, AKA the emergency brake, left on. If the parking brake is in
good condition it should prevent the car from starting. In general I
do not like remote starters, they can't monitor an overheat or low oil
pressure and if not properly set up could kill the battery if the car
doesn't start easily. It is also very easy to get distracted and
forget your car is running till it runs out of gas! If your A/C is in
good condition the car cools off quickly so you don't need to
prestart. In some areas if the car is unattended you are not allowed
to leave the motor running and even if you are in it it isn't to be
left idling for more than 15 min. This is only enforced in high
pollution areas like NYC and LA although I have heard of people being
asked to shut down trucks in rest stops. To install a remote starter
with an alarm can get complicated so have it done by someone with some
experience with installing them. They can be very difficult to
troubleshoot if there is a problem especially if the alarm has an
engine kill feature. Make sure to keep all manuals and document the
installation for future reference.

Having solved all the problems the car came with I thought I was out of
the fog for a while. Today I have a noise while in neutral. Goes away
when the clutch pedal is depressed. In a Corvair that would be a bad
flywheel, what is it in the D?

The recall kits are available from any of the DeLorean suppliers. To
check if your DMC vehicle had the necessary suspension recalls performed,
there should be two red paint markings on the engine bay firewall. You
should also check the technical service bulletin's published by the initial
DMC, available from any DeLorean vendor.
In addition, the DeLorean Owners Association (DOA) sell back issues of
DeLorean World Magazine. The factory recalls are published in issue 18,
Volume 5, no. 4 spring 1988.

Subject: Mystery Delorean at Escondido, CA Cruise Night
(hope the rest of the list doesn't mind this, but we're trying to find the
owner of the mystery car)
Last Friday night, 2 Deloreans attended the Cruise Night in Escondido. We
were parked alongside each other in one of the many parking lots full of
interesting cars, when I happened to notice another Delorean driving past.
If the owner of that car happens to be on the list, we're planning to be
there again this Friday - please look for us and stop to say hello. This
invite also goes for anyone else who might be near Escondido this Friday.
We've been getting there by 6pm and usually stay until it starts to get
dark. The two of us have been getting quite a lot of attention. It is
interesting to see the contrasts and the similarities - an 81 vs. an 83, one
car is lowered, the other isn't, one turbine, one stock engine, grey vs.
black interior. It would be nice to have some other folks join us though...
(hint, hint)
Anyway, if the driver of that other car is on the list, please contact me.
Thanks,
Dave Cox

Subject: fuel pump
This morning on the way to work, the engine stalled and would not start
again. Last night I put new brake pads on the car all around. Afterward I
took the car for a spin, so I don't think that the fuel pump failure is
related to the brake work I did last night.
When turning the key to the "on" position, I do not hear the 2-3 seconds
of buzzing that the fuel pump usually makes. I read through the archives
and figured out where to start looking. Here's what I found:
1. Jumpering the brown and and purple wires on the RPM relay did not start
the fuel pump.
2. #1 fuse is not blown
3. #7 fuse is missing. I remember noticing that it was missing a week or
two ago. I don't believe it's ever been there. How could the fuel pump run
without it? Tried putting a fuse in for #7 - nothing different.
4. Using a volt meter on the main harness where the fuel pump connects
yeilded no signal.
Does it sound like there's an electrical problem between the RPM relay and
the fuel pump? Is there any way to directly test the fuel pump - perhaps
hooking some sort of power source directly to the pump??
Any ideas are more than welcome. This is my daily driver car.
