I TOTALLY get it! As it was originally discussed as a place where "new"
DeLorean owners can find out more of the do's and don'ts about their cars,
or "I wish I would have known about that FIRST, before I did this", or what
product to use to clean the leather interior, etc.
I would hope that everyone following the DML understands that the "new
owners" information is only for research or gathering knowledge before we
make the same mistakes that others may have encountered along the way
WITHOUT competing with the DML.
It's especially nice to know that by posting our experiences for newbies to
learn from, that the names of the people who contributed such posts will be
edited out by the moderator... as many of us (myself included) would rather
not contribute until AFTER the Millennium Concours in Houston, or
Graceland/Memphis, instead of waving flags to point out subtle flaws or
inconsistencies! (Okay, maybe I'm being paranoid about this... judges are
probably not reading posts with notepads in hand!)
Whether this new site idea is successful or not, I wish Good Luck to
everyone involved and to everyone who benefits from it. We appreciate the
time, talent, and effort put forth by those that see a need for something
and take it upon themselves to provide a solution or way to better organize
so we can all be more productive.
In my case, I didn't even know about the DML until several days after
getting the "D", so it would have been just MY luck anyway to find out a few
no-no's after-the-fact! I'm going to post my two cents soon, for future
newbies to learn from my stupid mistakes! Let's ALL add something of
interest, so I won't be post #2 of 2!

About our previous post regarding the minor anti-freeze leak... no, it's not
from under the intake manifold. (Further comments are always welcome).
The reason I say "minor" leak, is because I first noticed 1 drop on a pan
under the car while it was parked on the carpeting in the grand ballroom of
The Ritz Carlton Hotel for 24 hours.
For the next 3 1/2 days the car was parked in The America's Center for the
"World of Wheels" show and the spot of anti-freeze left behind on the pan
was probably the size of a quarter.
Let me tell you... the ISCA judges were tough! They said I would have won
1st place if the engine compartment had been a little cleaner and not
leaking OIL! I begged to differ about an oil leak, it was anti-freeze, and
although we weren't there to argue with the judge, he was nice enough to go
over and check it out with my engine compartment housekeeper (Ron). It
seems as though the engine compartment was spotless from the top down, but
from the bottom up it didn't pass the white glove treatment since it was
driven there instead of trailered! BTW, I won 2nd place, but I'll never
understand how I got 22 points out of a possible 25 points FOR PAINT!!!!!
(He wrote: "What can I say?") I guess he's a DeLorean lover... he just sold
one, and he has another with only 18 miles that he'll probably sit on until
he can get $30k for it. He's in Toledo, Ohio if anyone wants his phone
number.
On another subject, I know all about "Boy Toys"... my Dad owns an Antique
Toy Museum, but remember, they're "Girl Toys" too!!!!! I get so much
enjoyment from sharing my passion of the car with others, even when I lose
my voice every weekend from answering questions during events! The
strangest question that I've ever been asked was something like... "That's a
girl car, isn't it?" and it was the only time I've ever been at a loss for
words! I wonder what she meant by that????

They can be purchased at NAPA or any online auto parts stores. They are sold
as kits, that's the gauge, hoses, and all of the fittings needed to attach.
Just get the one for a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel system. I think I paid $150 for
mine. Well worth it.

That's funny, because for me, after the BTTF references and cocaine jokes,
alot of people say that "the car must be a chick magnet!". To which I
usually reply "actually it's really a guy magnet, and most women usually
don't even notice the car" (much to my dismay ;( ). Only once were there
two women in a Saab convertible totally checking out the D , and let me know
they thought I had a cool car. Boy that was fun, wish it would happen more
often. But most of the time, I see guys pointing out my car to their
girlfriends who shrug their shoulders in a "that's nice, dear" sort of way.

Find a MAC dealer or a Snap-On dealer, they can help. It is VERY hard
to find an origional gauge set-up. Remember it must be metric and have
the banjo fittings. Many of the fuel system problems can be diagnosed
without a fuel gauge. If you describe the symptoms maybe the list can
help. The fuel system is one of the more complicated and least
understood of the systems on the car. The less you touch it generally
the better off you are. The biggest single source of trouble IMHO is
dirt, long term storage, and age. Start by removing the fuel pump and
inspecting the tank and associated components for contamination,
deterioration and correctness. No matter what you do if there is dirt
in the tank problems will reoccur.

I don't know the history of your car but generally if there is a
coolant leak it indicates that you should replace ALL coolant hoses,
water pump, seals, thermastat, belts. Remember that it is a 20 year
old car and many are still running on the origional parts! Even if you
had parts changed maybe they didn't change all of them. There are some
parts under the intake manifold that are hard to reach so maybe they
are still origional. Congratulations on your win at the show. It is
very pleasing to have others aknowledge the timelessness of the design
of the Delorean and to have a prime example to show others. Some of
the "low mileage" cars need the most work as they tend to have the
most origional parts.

The best and easist way is to mount a gear-driven actuator, not a heavy
solenoid, in the rear of the door, connecting it to the bellcrank with a
short linkage rod. You don't need a "kicker" if your doors open properly
already. As for over-torquing the torsion rods, there is no reason to do
that unless you need to lift the weight of a heavy solenoid instead of a
light-weight actuator. In the 10+ years I have been using and selling
remote door openers, I have had few problems with their operation. Just
remember that they are not a cure for a door which does not already open
smoothly and glide all the way to the top. They just unlatch the door.
Keep an eye on my web page (delorean-parts.com) - I hope to soon have door
opener parts and instructions featured, along with my bolt-on water pump
pulleys, steering column bushings, braided stainless speedo cables, and
other unique items. Be patient as I'm a little slow at getting started on
the web stuff (even though I'm not as old as Les H.).
Note to moderators - See, I'm getting more civil. I was going to start with
"So Robert, how many have you actually seen?" but decided that there was
nothing to be gained by pointing out that there are more than "2 separate
versions" of ways to do this. And I'm not trying to say other ways don't
work, just that this one is time-tested.

I went to view a RHD car today in (Stoke on Trent), for sale, Grey manual,
...post factory conversion..not up to the Wooler-Hodec standard..but not bad,
running, MOT'd, Turbo charged! ( fitted in the USA)
Lowered suspension..Too Low!..( my £50 pair front springs would sort it out)..
rather worn interior ( would benefit from my new seat covers!)
Wheels painted black! Tyres too small on rear,
Headlights need replacing, tick over a bit lumpy,
Having said all that its running, on the road and probably the cheapest RHD car around at about £13/ 14 K
The Stainless Steel is a bit dirty, but flawless.

J C Whitney lists a Fuel Injection test set of gauges for the Bosch
K-Jetronic system for $55.95. It's item # 12DY3617U on page 169 of catalog #
648J-03. That should be enough information to order this. The phone # in the
U.S. is 800-529-4486. It comes with gauges, hoses, shut-off valve, an
assortment of adaptors and instructions.
