Subject: Re: Insuring a Delorean?
When you say full coverage, they will give you what
they feel the car is worth... to insure a car as a
classic, you must declare an amount for the car...
If I got straight full coverage, the rates through
progressive would be fairly cheap, however, if it was
totaled, they will give it a very low worth, because
of it's age.... to get around that, I "declared" a
value of $50K on the car, which means no matter what,
the car gets a 50K settlement, stolen, burned,
wrecked, or otherwise... it costs more, but you are
guaranteed that it will be replaced if it can be...
I'd be hard pressed to find a Delorean w/ 4,000 miles,
immaculate shape for the 4-5K they would give me for
it (if even that), under standard insurance.
Also, when selecting a company, make sure they are
financially secure. A friend of mine had a 67 vette
insured through a "Joe Blow" insurance company, and
when it was stolen, the company didn't have the money
to pay for it (or they did, but somehow convinced the
commision they didnt, and went bankrupt).
Progressive, Geico, State Farm, all big companies who
won't be going out of business anytime soon... the
smaller guys, you never know.

American and Aer Lingus have some sort of working relationship and they
share a flight from Chicago to Dublin. We got American from Minneapolis to
Chicago and Aer Lingus from Chicago to Dublin non stop for a total of $985
round trip. Not really a bargain but when you have specific dates you want
to fly in sometimes you have to take what's available. We found some Aer
Lingus flights already full out of Chicago but we had some flexability.
We're going over early to tour the Republic of Ireland before going to
Belfast.

Actually those screws require a Posidrive screw driver. They are quite
similar to a Phillips but have little barbs between the four blades. A
Phillips will slip more and eventually strip the slots in the screw heads.

I bought a pair of these (or something that looks just like them anyway) at a local Kragen for about $25 recently. They work fine for a lowered Delorean also.

Darryl's Fun Per Dollar ratio is a great idea. We go to a few local car
shows....and enter our car for fun. ....sit in our lawn chairs across the
sidewalk and observe....what a kick.....we decided to count people looking
at our DeLorean versus some Really well done Vettes nearby. At one show,
the record was 21 around and actually looking at the D, when there would be
2 or 3 looking at the Vettes......and we decided we should count ONLY the
ones facing the car and not those that had already looked at it and turned
to talk to someone else! When the crowd dwindled down to 10 or 12, I
popped the doors and trunk and engine hood and they REALLY moved in then!
They DO draw a crowd....Fun Fun. These car shows are in small towns running
a few blocks down main street which has been cleared off...most run about
350 cars......we enter the "Original, Unrestored" category, where there are
usually between 50 and 75 competing......we have never won less than third
place and several first place trophys. We have never seen another DeLorean
though!!

On a slightly different note - is anyone flying back to the States on
the 29th of May from Shannon Airport? It's a Delta flight. I'm going
out to California for the summer, and will be on this flight, which
stops off in Newark for a few hours before going to San Francisco.
Even though I live here in Ireland, I'm not sure if I can make it to
the show unfortunately, as my college exams might not be finished in
time. (they finish on either Friday 25th or Saturday 26th - if they
finish on Friday, I'll make it up for the Saturday events, fingers
crossed!)
Even so, I'd like to meet up with some of you!
Bruce or anyone else, if you go to Limerick in your travels around
the Republic of Ireland and want to meet up, I'll show you some good
pubs! Also one of the sites where John was negotiating to build the
factory here in the Republic(before he signed with the NIDA guys in
the north) is close to my home - about 6 miles. The other site is
across the road from my house!

Marc,
From where are you flying? I'm looking at the mid $900s flying out of St.
Louis. The cheapest path I've found was a flight to Chicago, then to
Boston, then on to Belfast. I'd like it if I could skip that whole east
coast connection.
Where did you find your plan? I've just been searching around the Internet
travel sites. Any tips from anyone would be appreciated. I was planning on
biting the bullet in the next week or so.
I had been hesitating in the last few weeks trying to decide whether or not
I should go. Finally I thought I'd better s--t or get off the pot (so to
speak). I've chosen the former. This is too good of a chance to pass up!

Subject: Re: Fun-per-Dollar (FPD) Ratio
For some reason, it seems that the more expensive/exotic/rare that a
car is, the more respectful the owners. I've gotten both complements
and smiles from folks driving Ferarri's, NSX's, Pantera's, and even
Espirts. But for some reason I always catch flack from Corvette, and
Viper owners.
Now while this is only speculation on my part, it seems that they only
buy thier cars in an attempt at impressing other people rather then
for their own happiness.
The worst/funniest is when I'm at a stoplight and one of these people
will pull up next to me. If their girlfriend notices the car, the
immediatly become angry and jealous!
To relay an story, I was sitting in a casino coffee shop late one
night catching the breakfast special. Caddy-corner from my both sat 3
men. Not hearing their conversation was difficult since they were
speaking so loud. They were all trying to one-up each other with
stories about thier Corvettes, and all the women that they got into
bed as a result the girls being impressed by thier cars. As time went
on, the stories became more far fetched, and the women they were
talking about got younger. After I was done eating, the guys were
still sitting there. I couldn't help but laugh when I looked at them
as I walked by. As I was paying my bill, the resturant became much
quiter after that...
Bottom line, it is good to be humble about your car, and respectful of
the cars of others. After all, the DeLorean speaks for itself. But if
someone says anything to you about your car that you don't like, I say
if they can dish it, they can take it. Don't feel bad about saying
something back.

There is a classic car show/rally EVERY (yes....every) Thursday night in the
summertime about 1 1/2 miles from my place. I want to give this a shot and
see!

Virgin Airlines has reasonable rates and great service.
In addition AmericanAirlines & British Airways have an indirect
partnership. They offer very reasonable rates from JFK, New York to London.
Upon arrival in London take the British Airways Express Shuttle from
London to Belfast. (approx. $150.00)

Subject: strange sounds with low fuel
Hey all,
many of my problems are getting fixed, mostly thanks to the DML. my list of
'to-do's' is dwindling quickly! however here's a NEW one....
now i know my car starts running a little shaky when i get to about 1/3 tank
of gas. it sputters sometimes while accelerating, and idles like crap. Rob
Grady said i probably have a worn out fuel suction line in my gas tank and
i'm getting air pockets when the gas gets low enough to expose the holes or
bad parts. makes sense. however today i was going to try to run my gas low
so i could refill it with all fresh gas for the first time EVER. every now
and then it hiccuped, however something new started happening. when i'm
going slowly like in a parking lot, i can hear a sound that resembles road
noise, like going over a bridge at high speed. it kind of sounds like
something rubbing or smoothly grinding. it goes away for seconds at a time,
and it's not incredibly loud but you can hear it at under 25 mph. it does
not have anything to do with steering wheel position or gear. my guess is
that the gas is getting low and the fuel pump in the gas tank is acting up.
the sound seems to emanate from below the dash console or from the left side
of the car in front of me, which is the general location of the gas tank. as
soon as a refilled my gas tank, the sounds and sputtering went away for GOOD,
and i'm sure it will do it again when the tank gets low.
anyone have any good ideas? this spring i will probably remove my gas tank
and swap all the seals and hoses.
later guys,
Andy

Regarding Jack stands, I spent the better part of last winter
scraping my frame. It was up in the air most of the time for about 3
months.
What I did was buy standard jack stands( four of them )and weld a
4x6" flat plate on them.I would place them in the Four Corners of
the frame, which I believe is the optimum location (or at least a
good location) for supporting a Delorean.
Note: I didn't even raise the car all the way up in one shot,
I did it in steps and checked it constantly until I got to the
desired height and I usually had cement blocks under the wheels
And even a 5th and sometimes a 6th jack stand under the car
just in case something unexpected happened.
If this sounds excessive to you, I invite you to stop by for a visit
and I will introduce you to my neighbor Joe who will be in a wheel
chair the rest of his life and experiences constant pain, Joe is
lucky to be alive after his van fell on him when the jack slipped.
There is also the ultimate way to lift a car and that is to get a
lift in your garage, this will also give you the ability to store an
extra car in the garage under many circumstances. You can buy a lift
for about $2500 and up and once you have one you will wonder how you
lived without it.

Hello,
I am 17 so I had my mother put the car in her name so insurance would be
a little cheaper. She called progressive 4 days ago and they wanted $5,400
per year for the DeLorean alone. They said it was a "high performance
exotic" and also in the "high tech" category....LOL My mom has a clean
record too. I will look around a bit more! why is it so much cheaper for
other people that have progressive?
