Not quite. The tinting doesn't change the strength of the glass; the law
says that you can't have anything other than clear glass in front of you
for visibility reasons (this is also why it's illegal to hang things from
your rear view mirror), except that a six-inch maximum strip at the top
may be tinted against the sun. The line is actually marked AS1 with a
down arrow, and if you'll note the tinting actually ends a bit before it
(i.e. not even a little bit of tinting beyond it). The AS number refers
to the amount of tint in the glass; the side windows are AS2 which is very
slightly tinted. "Tinted" tinted windows are usually AS3, which is
usually as far as is used for windows that are designed to be looked out
of. The scale goes up to AS6, which is almost opaque.

Subject: Chance meetings at a car show
I took my car to the Battle of Britain 60th anniversary car show at the
Santa Monica Airport, and I was very surprised to find TWO people who
both worked on the car, and for JZD. The first man claimed to have
designed the luggage rack and knew exactly why the car needed one, and
quite a few facts that most don't know about the car. This lead me to
believe him. The second Guy I meet said that he worked on the design
process for the car, he never did state which part of the car he helped
with. I was very surprised to have meet anyone, let alone two people who
worked on the car. I didn't win anything which was kind of a downer
considering that it was one of the nicest cars there, AND we got the most
attention of all the cars at the show, but... it was worth it.

Subject: 30,000 mile maintenence
This winter, I'll be slowly conducting some 30,000 mile maintenance on
my DeLorean. On my list is...
Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor
Oxygen Sensor, Reset LAMBDA counter
Fuel Filter, Air Filter
Cooling System flush, replace all hoses
AC and Alternator Belt
Also what I found when looking at factory recommendations was change the
transmission fluid. Is there any type of fluid that works best? Or
should I not even bother doing this? (I remember reading a while back
that there may be leaks if the seal in the fill/drain plugs are opened,
is this true?)
On my msc. list is getting a MSD Ignition Coil, Stainless Header bottle,
and stainless heat shields.
I have a basic knowledge of automotive workings, basically just enough
to do all of the listed above myself, but I do have two more questions.
The manual also states to adjust the ignition timing. I have never done
this, nor have I really looked into it. Is this something that could be
easily done with basic knowledge if I just read up on it a little more,
or is this something I should have done by a real mechanic?
And finally, I've heard a lot of talk on the list recently about the
Impulse Coil. This is the first time I've hear of this, and I couldn't
find too much info on this in the parts/workshop manual. Since i'm
going to have the intake removed this winter, I'm going to have some
pretty easy access to the distributor. Should I replace this part, or
not worry about it? Sorry for the length, but I always like getting
things done right the first time.

Dave is correct, we no of no delimitation problems with replacement DeLorean
windshields.
On the subject of Plexiglas or Lexan windshields; the use of any material
other than "laminated tempered safety glass" fitted to the front windshield
of any passenger or commercial motor vehicle sold in the USA is illegal.
This same law applies in most countries outside the US.

They both scratch very, very
easily. In fact, just running your windshield wipers on a windshield
with a small amount of dust on it would permanently ruin the piece.
They don't crack easily, granted -- that's why Lexan and Plexi are
used
in high-vandalism and/or high impact areas such as hockey arena glass.
However, if you take a look at any of these installations, you will
see
how easily it's scratched. Plexi can be scratched with a fingernail,
and Lexan with a key. Just imagine the gouges your windshield would
have after an hour of highway driving where your glass is continually
pelted by small pebbles.
I never thought about the scratch issue,some very good replys about
using,plastic windshields,again I was going to do it for the short
term reason,but after reading about the cons with using plexiglas or
lexan for windshields,I will just stick with good old glass for a
windshield,I do have one new windshield hanging around but I had
planned to use it for Vin #000570(I cracked the windshield by
accident,always pad your windshield if you have a storage area above
your stored cars,(the car was covered by a thin car cover)but I will
use it for the (red)painted car.
Also I have found that you do NOT have to use that expensive oil
based crummy windshield adhesive,I replaced a windshield on one of my
cars (a GM product) and I used Red Devil Brand Adhesive Sealant
called, Lifetime(water based) that is Siliconized Acrylic,(BLACK)and
I did that over two years ago and it works like a charm!!The beauty
about it is that it is Water Cleanup,so that any residue can be
cleaned up without any fuss,and it works just as GOOD or Better that
that oil based goop that we call windshield adhesive it has SPEC 230
Performance,AND you can buy it at any Home Depot Store,and it is
UNDER $2.00 a tube(10.1 Fl.Oz 300Ml.)I think I used about two or
three tubes.Guaranteed to last a life time.

The most common leak areas in the auto transmission is at the two connector
plugs for the computer governor. Leaking O-ring seals are most responsible
for these leaks.

Chicago Sun Times because I think many DML subscribers will find JZD's

1982 and charged with attempting to help finance a
cocaine-selling operation, with profits presumably to be

not the DMC 12. Years ago when I titled my car, the state of Ohio told
me they do not recognize DMC 12 as a model, but they do recognize
DeLorean Sports Car.

You did not mention if it is a manual or automatic. Assuming it is an
automatic a common area of leakage is the shift cable itself. If that
is the problem then call P.J. Grady and they have a way to stop it
from leaking. Other less likely areas are the seals for the wiring
connecter and the switch.The pan gasket is easy and so is the vacum
modulater and "o" ring for the dipstick tube. Also check where the
hoses connect to the cooler. Any
other leaks will require removal of the trans,final drive, torque
converter unit.In the meantime make very sure you always keep the
correct fluid level up with dexron II. You will wipe out the clutches
in short order if the trans is low on fluid. Also check the level in
the final drive, many of the units I have seen were very low.

I just recently installed a Dakota Digital Cruise Control
System. Unfortunately I dont' have the pictures developed yet.
It was very easy to install & it looks really good (or I think
so). The nice thing about this kit is that DD gives you the
option of what type of controller to use. I chose the "Dash
Mount" switch, and mounted it next to the dash dimmer. Since
the color is gray, it fits very well with the car (my car is a
gray car).
One point that I would mention was the routing of the throttle
cable and the possible problems surrounding mounting it. I had
to run my cable around the "front" of the engine (really the
very back of the car). By doing this, I was able to get a
straight in position on the cruise control cable.
I have driven the car for about two weeks, checking the throttle
on a regular basis to be sure that it was not coming out of the
groove & causing a potential hazzard. I am happy to report that
all is well with it.
As soon as I get some pictures available I will post them on my

For those of you who love to polish on your stainless (like I do), I found a
nice polishing liquid at a local car show on Sunday. It is called "Green
Stuff Metal Polish." I allowed the gentleman to demonstrate his polish on my
D, which was already highly polished, and he managed to make it look even

Here's a neat little trick to tell if you are leaking transmission fluid or
engine oil (both can look similar on a garage
floor):
Put a sample of the leaking fluid on a paper towel. Put samples of engine
oil and transmission fluid on the same
paper towel. Look at them under a black light. They glow differently, so
you'll be able to match the leaking fluid.

Subject: Installing ignition dist
Hello,
I am fixing up a DeLorean which sat outside for a long time. I am
getting ready to install a new ignition distributor and was wondering if I
have the right idea. I am not that much of a mechanic and have never done
this before, I just want my car to run again!
Do I get the # 1 firing cylinder in the firing position and have the
distributor rotor ponted at the small mark on the inside of the distributor
housing? and then put the cap on it? question, How do I get the #1 cylinder
in the correct firing position? what number should the mark on the pulley
line up with? also, do I know what I am doing? its very possible I don't.
