Apparently you missed my posting last month about my front end vibration. If
you have already had the front wheels balanced the next step is to rebalance
the rear wheels. That was where my problem was. You also may want to check
your wheel runout on all four wheels. Maximum side runout is 0.080"

Make no mistake about it.
It doesn't required OVER two years to produce 100 or 200 models, hand built
pieces or not.
I am not interest with the ONE model shown in Cleveland. That maybe one, or
two, or three units that he may have as a "show piece." There is still many
of us that have not received or heard from him! Get with it. It is over two
years and heading into the third.
As a business man, he should know what it takes to start and finish a project
-- production run. If his production orders can't be met, he should inform
us or keep us up to date when it will be available. The only binding point
to this deal, that he had with us as "bait," is that these kits are "LIMITED
KITS and NUMBERED." So many of us has bitten our tongues to keep our mouth
shut and is hoping for the best that we will get it. Yes, I have ALSO taken
into the account that he was ill (okay, give him nine months of convalesce
time) that is still over a year and a half of time to produce the model kits.
Does he need more time? JUST TELL US, I am a reasonable person and I am
sure many of the others are too.
So, have you heard from him? Has anyone heard from him? I haven't. After
my first posting yesterday, there were at least four others that followed my
posting and they had the same complaints. They are the TWO SAME ISSUES.
First issue. None of us has gotten the model. If they did, they got a few
parts, not a full kit, if they have gotten anything at all. Second. I and
many others haven't heard from him, no matter how many times we have written
or called him.
BTW. Have you tried his website?

I'm not sure if it is a national law, but in Florida, I understand that
insurance is required to pay for any broken or cracked windshield with no
deductible. You might try going to a local auto glass shop and inquiring.
They might be able to install a Lotus Espirit windshield at no cost to you.
About the Plexiglas idea:
I've heard stories about a government requirement concerning windshield
strength. As I understand it, windshields cannot be made too strong or else
they will cause people too much injury when their heads hit them in an
accident. The same goes for tinting windshields. One of the reasons why it
is illegal to tint an entire windshield is that it will make the glass too
strong and could cause more injury to your head than the government would
like to see happen in an accident. On all windshields near the top, there
is a little line on one side marked, "A_S" or something to that effect. On
my Delorean with OEM windshield, it's on the upper left. The little line
next to this lettering denotes the legal limit to where window tinting can
be put.

You got me on this one! I never knew that there were stock rear spacers for
the Delorean. My car didn't have any rear spacers on it when I bought it.
Were all Deloreans originally shipped with rear spacers? Or just some of
them? Could my Delorean have had spacers on them that were removed by a
previous owner?

Mike,
It might be that one of your rotors are out of balance. Maybe you should
have your tires balanced while they are on the car.
Another posibility is that your tires could be out-of-round. Jack each
wheel off the ground until they spin freely. Spin each wheel and see if the
distance from wheel to ground changes as the tire spins.
I've heard of wheel shops that can 'true' tires, but I've never seen it
done. For those of you who don't know, to 'true' a tires means to grind or
wear away any high spots to make the tire round.

Thanks Dave, Dan & Marty for the info on the sway bar.
I have two leads for having a new sway bar made. The first one is a local
suspension shop called Tampa Spring. They can make just about anything.
The second lead is ... maybe you can help me on this ... I think it was
Trevor Summer's Delorean. It has a custom REAR sway bar he ordered from a
catalog.
Brain & Joe -- are you reading this? Do you remember who's Delorean it was
who had the rear sway bar? I bet whoever made this could make a new front
sway bar.
I'm glad to hear that the sway bar wasn't intended to also function as a
wheel stop. This will make it a lot easier to design a new one. The sway
bar is supposed to work like a big spring. So it isn't just a matter of
getting a big metal rod and bending it to the right shape. It has to be
made out of the right kind of metal and then be tempered to give it the
right spring quality. I know that Tampa Spring has a kiln big enough to
bake a sway bar.
Since the dimensions are critical to wheel castor, can anyone give me the
factory engineering specs for the end-to-end distance? Perhaps someone
could come up with the specs for spring constant (K-value?) I would rather
go by this than trust that the OEM sway bar on my Delorean is true to
factory specs. As a worst case scenario, I could measure sway bars from a
few Deloreans and take an average. The problem is, I feel like I'm more abt
to spot a unicorn in Tampa than a Delorean. I want to make the first new
geometry sway bar right on the first try.
As far as beefing up the sway bar goes... we are limited to using OEM bar
diameter without modifying the parts the bar fits into. It would be too
much candy for a nickel to have to start with a larger diameter bar and turn
the ends down on a lathe. I used to know a guy with a lathe long enough to
do such a thing. Perhaps using a different alloy would do the job.
Suggestions anyone?
Marty -- the strange thing about both my Delorean and Randy's is that we
both have about the same amount of sway bar wear on BOTH sides. Unless we
both have/had too much toe-in adjustment? I'll find out when I get mine
apart and take some measurements.
I'll keep y'all informed as to my progress. The end result should be an
improved sway bar that will give less body roll and a sharper turning
radius.

You may want to consider getting the tires and wheels checked by a shop
that has a Hunter GSP 9700 balancing machine. It is capable of checking for
wheel runout, hard spots in the tire, and a number of other things that can
cause vibrations like this. About the only thing it can't check is problems
on the car itself, like wheel bearings. But most of the potential problems
are tire and wheel related and it can check all of those things. No
affiliation, I just like a machine that can tell you so many useful things.

In all likelihood, this problem is due to dirty and/or corroded bulb
sockets and/or connectors. I had this problem, which manifested
itself only in wet weather. The solution: clean, clean, clean.
Start with the bulb sockets, since they are the easiest. Use tuner
cleaner, fine sandpaper, ink erasers, etc. One tip: there is a little
wire-brush wheel accessory for the Dremmel tool that fits perfectly
into the bulb sockets. Works wonders. Clean or replace the bulbs, too.
If that doesn't fix it, start cleaning harness connectors. There are
the ones under the dash, and the ones up front by the bulbs. There is
also one under the left front fender that you have to remove the
windshield washer reservoir cover to get to. (As an aside, if you
haven't removed this cover recently, best to spray some liquid wrench
on the bolts the night before. It's hell if you strip those rivnuts.
Also, make sure the drain holes at the bottom of the cover are clear,
else you will soon have a rusted-up washer pump.)

I just purchased an NOS windshield from Houston, and it has not
delaminated at all. The only windshields I have ever seen delaminate
while in storage are from late 1950's/early 1960's cars. I do not
believe that this has ever been a problem with the DeLoreans. In fact,
while at Cleveland this summer there were over 100 D's there, and I
didn't see any with bad windshields. Where are you getting your
information from?

In my opinion, I would not attempt to do this for the following
reasons:
1. Plexiglas scratches especially if you are going to use it as a
windshield it will be subjected to rocks, debris etc.. which will
scratch it.
2. After some time to exposure to elements (wind, rain, snow,
sunlight) the plexiglass will form sort of a foggy appearance on it
whish would (over time) make it difficult to see through, especially
at night.
The Delorean windshield does have a curve to it. As far as the
inspection is concerned, depending on where you bring it they may
overlook it and just glance at it to make sure there are no cracks in
it. But then again some shops will inspect anything that looks a
little out of the ordinary. There is a safety stamp on ALL automotive
glass (windshields, roll down windows..etc) and if they don't see the
DOT safety stamp on the windshield, they will most likely to fail
you.
The delaminating problem you described is true, but it's not a big
problem. The car I purchased from my friend has a NOS windshield
(from PJ Grady I think) and the delimanation is at the very bottom of
the glass over the black trim. It is not in the line of sight as you
are driving (you can't even see it from the inside of the car since
it's so low down)and it is hardly noticeable from the outside. I
would replace it with the right windshield the first time and not
just slap on a temporary solution then remove it and install the
right one.

I had the same experience. Only one wheel was a noticable problem. Standing
up and looking at them, they look great. Get down on your knees and you see
some "orange peel" but let's face it, the original wheels aren't mirror
smooth to begin with. I'm still delighted with the way they look, and I
think the powder coat will stick on and last much longer than the original.
My wheels had some minor flaking, with just a little whitish oxidation.
Inside they were like new, once the NCTs were off. Even the valve stems. I
matched the original gray, and I'm glad I did since I now think chrome would
look worse on a less-than-mirror smooth finish.

Robert,
This problem is common and is a result of corrosion and heat distortion in
the bulb socket. The distortion causes the bulb contacts to miss-align with
the socket contacts causing erratic or intermittent lamp operation. If the
problem is not severe the socket can be repaired by cleaning the socket
contacts with WD-40 or other penetrant.
Severely distorted or corroded sockets will need to be replaced.

Michael,
The DeLorean uses a racing type suspension system and requires very tight
alignment and wheel balancing properties. In many cases computer balancing
is not sufficient to eliminate wheel vibration. This is a precise procedure
which most alignment shops are not experienced in.
You will need to find an alignment shop that is equipped for "on the car
spin balancing". Check the yellow pages for a suspension alignment shop
specializing in performance automobiles.

Claude and list,
I dont see many problems with using Lexan or Plexiglass for
windshields. On my car (non DMC) the front two windows will be Lexan
half styles (like the DMC, top part stays in place, the bottom half
rolls down like normal) because of the custom speaker set-up (cant
have the window hitting the speaker, now cant we?). Also, about the
issue about breaking, at the race track where I work everyone uses
Lexan or Plexiglass on their race cars. True the cars are not driven
on the streets everyday, but they go just as fast and hit each other
harder than "most" everyday situations. Never have we had a
windshield break. The only concern I would have using Lexan as a
windshield is that it scratches very easily and scratches dont buff
out.

response from Lee. Last July, when he posted a note about some edition
owners falling through the cracks, I e-mailed and asked him to check on my
status. I received a curt reply:

Not having a record of an "edition number" nor any memory of having received
one, I replied with the number and date of the check I had sent him, as well
as the date the check had cleared my account. Since that time, I have not
had the courtesy of a reply of any kind. I've remained silent because of
assurances by others that Lee is a "nice guy", but our combined experiences
would seem to indicate otherwise. Perhaps those that are close to Lee can
check with him and provide us with an accurate status report. I am willing
to give him the benefit of the doubt and can envision circumstances of
personal difficulty that might prevent him from dealing with this issue.

Subject: DMC For Rent?
Hello DMCers-
I am but a poor student in his last year of high school who desperately wants a D of his own, but has to continue to save for one. I had a proposition for someone who is either going to sell their D or just wants a few bucks. I am shooting a little BACK TO THE FUTURE video for my Video Production class and I would LOVE to have the DeLorean play its original part, I would only need it for about a half a days shooting and I'd be willing to pay 50 dollars, on top of that the owner is totally welcome to sit and watch and hang around as long as he/she wants, I am TOTALLY not expecting anyone to leave ME their car for a day. Anywhoo if you are in the Southern California area and are willing to lend a FUTURE DMCer your beatuiful piece of machinery I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you all for your time!

Subject: Cruise Control
Now this is one topic I thought would be covered extensively in the
archive's but was surprised to find only vague references.
I am looking to install a cruise control on my DeLorean this fall. I
tried Pep Boys, Advance Auto, and Auto Zone and they all have only the
one style(the same one) which seems to apply only to cars 1992 and
above. I know several years ago I bought one at Sears for one of my
other cars but I believe Sears stores no longer carry automotive
accesseries.
Question: If you recently installed a cruise control on your car where
did you get it, how much was it, & did you install it yourself.

Hi Everyone.
I sat down with Lee last night to talk about the Limited Edition model kits.
I am a friend of Lee's and I'm trying to help with the kits.

Lee has about 25 yet to finish and he is planning to devote the month of
October to get them done. He hopes to have every last kit in the hands of
the owners before Christmas. They WILL get finished. The only way you won't
get your model is if you've changed e-mails and/or postal addresses since
you paid for your kits and not forwarded this to Lee or myself.
As to his mail and website, he had his ISP drop dead on him (they were
bought out by another company that only wanted their DSL services and they
pulled the plug on the rest of their operations -- without warning --). I
set Lee up with another ISP and got his mail and websites working again.

I don't know why people keep saying that the website is down. Granted, there
is no BBS on the site, but the model information and the contact info are
all in place.
Yes, it's been a long time. Lee is retiring from the software business and
he's had to devote almost all of his time to getting that done. That's why
I've asked people to contact me instead of Lee directly so that I can help
him with the model kits. He's also been busy making keys for the major
DeLorean parts suppliers which you can order from them with no waiting. Once
he's past the kits he'll start on the lighted keys. The molds have already
been cast and they'll have white LEDs for the light source.
Other DeLorean models:
Lee was commissioned by Sun-Star America (http://www.sunstartoys.com) to
assist in the design of a 1/16 scale die-cast DeLorean model. It's now in
Sun Star's hands and they project that the cars will be available starting
in February 2001. They will be available through the usual toy and die-cast
suppliers (and perhaps some of the DeLorean parts suppliers) for between
$24.95-$29.95. These are completed models with working doors etc., not kits.
They will not be a limited edition. The first production run will be 80,000
to 90,000 cars.
Please, let this be the last that we use the DML for this subject. Contact

Subject: Lobsters , Delorean Fall Foliage Tour?
The Delorean Fall Foliage tour is only about two weeks away and I'm
trying to take care of a lot of small details.
I need some info from those that are planing to or may want to attend.
Flo's Clam shack has not had lobsters for much of this season but
they said that they would bring some in for our group. They will be
about $8.95 each (this is a pay as you go, I don't collect money for
this) and I want to get an idea of how many I should tell them to
order.
Note: this place does not take reservations, it's first come first
serve so there is no guarantee that you will get a Lobster but I'm
doing the best I can to accommodate as many people as possible thus
if you think you want Lobster please let me know.
