Subject: Re: Torsion Bars supply
I believe you are referring to my post about the dangers of adjusting
the torsion bars. I do not mean to panic anyone about the current
supply of torsion bars it is my understanding that at this point in
time a sufficent supply exists. I just mean to highlight the dangers
in adjusting them and that it is one of the more exotic parts in a
delorean. There is no crossover to anything else and to have grumman
(if that is still their name) make a new batch would probably be
prohibitivly expensive. It would just be a shame to use up parts in
this manner ie: trying to adjust the doors without knowing how to do
it correctly and safely and ruining what would have been a perfectly
good part. By the way the bars are handed, that is there is a left
bar
for the left door and a right bar for the right door. Do not EVER mix
them up. There is also a limited supply of used torsion bars, they
are
just as good as n.o.s. if they are properly identified and handled
carefuly, DO NOT SCRATCH THE SURFACE.

Subject: Parts Supply (Was - Re: Torsion Bars supply)
People always ask me about the parts supply - how much is left, how long, etc.
Anyone who has visited the warehouse realizes the depth and breadth
of the supply, and this is after being the primary parts supply for
nearly 20 years. Keep in mind that as the car gets older, most will
get driven less, which means less accidents, less wear, etc.
Diminishing demand. On the other side of the coin, the poorer quality
cars will get parted out (like Erik is doing). This means an INCREASE
in the supply of some parts.
Some parts in the warehouse there is probably a 40 year (or longer
supply), at the current rate of consumption. As noted above, the
'current rate of consumption' is misleading, too. Other parts there
may be 'only' a five or ten year supply. As you all know, some parts
are already 'gone', at least the originals. Window switches come it
mind, as do defrost switches. Some unscrupulous individuals may have
some of these squirelled away in their attic or garage, waiting to
make a 'killing' when the time comes they are desireable. Similar
replacements have been sourced for these and other parts, so supply
(or price gouging) should not be a concern to the average owner.
Feel free to email me with comments/questions.

Was VIN #500 ever driven? I know it is now in the Crawford Museum,
but did anyone ever own it? Furthermore, why doesn't it have
the "DMC" emblem in on the front like all the other production cars?

Subject: Re: Found a car with possible PRV V6....
I believe that the car has an earlier version of the PRV-6 w/softer
cam shafts, so a direct swap would not be a possibility. While
canvasing various junkyards for parts I've run across a few PRV's.
For a car this old, the K-Jetronic system may/may not have some parts
such as fuel hoses that could be used. I don't know what the life-
span of the control pressure regulator, or the fuel distributor is.
So their value to you is questionable. This engine also has a
different type of idle speed control system that is not compatible
with the DeLorean (2-wire, spring resistance). You might be able to
use the same intake manifold, but you would have to go over it first
to seal all the open vaccum connections on it so it could be used for
the DeLorean application. All in all, the car would not have enough
usable parts for you to use on the DeLorean. On the flip side, if you
can get the car for a ridiculously low price it may be worth it in
another way. You could turn a profit by 1. Reselling the car (hard).
2. Using the car as a trade in to purchase a DeLorean (hard).
3.Donating the car to charity for a good tax deduction. or 4. Sell
the car for salvage (of course I'm speaking of the Volvo here. I'd
NEVER junk a D!).

I've had so many questions concerning this car I figured I would answer on the list instead of individual e-mails.
Well...as one could expect the owner does not want to sell. I guess he wants the car to deteriorate a little more...maybe he thinks it will add character and a pity case thus making the car worth more...ha.
I have seen it many times before. People own something they "plan" to fix up and never sell. By the time they decide to sell the car is worth little more than scrap.
Oh well...will keep you posted if the owner changes his mind.

That post was mine, and I corrected it later. DMC Houston has plenty available. No need to rush out and buy one.

Subject: Hood weather stripping solution creates new problem
I finally found an adhesive that will actually hold the hood weather stripping in
place for more than a month or two. It is a Permatex product called, duh, "Super
Weatherstrip Adhesive", part #80". This stuff really works great but I have created
another problem unrelated to the adhesive. Regluing the weatherstrip is a very tricky
operation, particularly around the corners and especially around the "hood flap"
area. I worked a small section at a time using heavy duty masking tape to hold
each section in place until I was satisfied that it was completely cured. No
problems so far. BUT, when I arrived at the end where the two ends meet I came
up about 2 inches short. Rather than try to redo the entire thing I would like
to simply glue in a new short 2 inch section. Problem: Where does one find 2
inches of OEM hood weather stripping without having to buy the whole thing? I
haven't tried the usual sources yet, I was hoping that someone might have a scrap
piece sitting around that I could bum 2 inches from. If so, please email me at
<rapparivarat@xxxxxxxxx>. I will be happy to send you a SASE, or payment if
necessary, for your trouble. I'm not looking for something for nothing, it's just
that I have a problem spending a couple of hundred bucks for 2 inches of OEM
weather stripping. I'm only doing this for looks because this car is NEVER in the
rain. If I cannot locate a scrap piece I will just leave it as it is. Thanks.

Subject: Re: Found a car with possible PRV V6....
The PRV-6 from the Volvo 260 has a few interchangeable parts. Unfortunately the B-28F version used in the DeLorean has an extremely low failure rate of all the internal parts, therefore keeping an old engine around just for spare parts does not sound practical, not to mention that virtually all of the DeLorean engine parts are readily available.
The PRV engine in the 78 Volvo is either a B-27a or B-28A, the configuration of this engine is incompatible with the DeLorean engine bay. Additionally, both of these engines had camshafts that wore out prematurely.

Dave Bauerle anywhere(yes I did check the marketplace). Thanks in advance.

Subject: ground to whell well measurements
Group,
I recently replaced the 215-60-RH 14 front tires on my D with the
correct 195-60 RH 14 size. Now, it
seems that the gap between the top of the tire and the bottom of the
wheel well rim is too big. On
further inspection, the previous owner had a nylon strap placed
across the front end springs which is
tight. I wonder if he put on new springs to make room for the bigger
wheels and the straps keep it from
being too high or springy. My measurements are:
Ground to bottom of the rim of the wheel well=26 inches
top of wheel to bottom of rim of wheel well = 3 1/2 inches
Are these the dimensions for a stock vehicle?
Also, what is the recommended dimensions for a 'lowered' version?
Any comments on the nylon strap would also be appreciated.
Steve

Hello-
I have never posted to this group before but have been reading the
list over the past several weeks. I am hoping to become an owner in
the near future and the information and knowledge that I have gained
from this list and the corresponding websites has been most helpful.
I would like to take this time to thank everyone who posts
information to this list and also find out if there are any owners in
the Phoenix, Arizona area. If so, I would like to pick your brain
and get a look at your car if possible.
Thank you all again for your time and information,

Subject: Alternative mirror suggestion
Hi,
Ever since first driving my DeLorean I wondered if it wouldn't be a good idea
to replace the outside mirrors (not the housing) with 'sphered' ones to
increase the visibility around the car. I now find the visibility through the
outside mirrors slightly limited. All cars nowadays are equipped with them
("objects in mirror are closer than they appear"). I know it is inapropriate
(blasphemy even) to replace standard parts with new ones, but in the light of
safety this might be a good idea nonetheless.
I searched the archives and site for a post regarding this but I couldn't find
any. Has this issue been discussed before? And if yes, are there 'standard'
replacements available?
