Hello List,
I have just started to look into insurance for my car. Hagerty classic
car insurance has extremely CHEAP prices.(1/2 price of most) my friend has
his dmc insured by them for $16,000 and its only $116.00 per year. I was
going to get my car insured by them to but then I found out all operators of
the vehicle must have 5 years driving experience. At 17 I think I am going
to have a hard time finding a place that will do it for a reasonable price.
The car will be under my parents names(both have perfect records) I will
only be driving the car maybe once or twice a week so limited mileage is fine
with me. seems like all collector car insurances have a 5 or more years
driving experience program

While I myself love the look of the stock rims, I've only seen one
aftermarket set that I really liked. I think there's a picture of
them in SSI on a test mule, and in the book "Dream Maker" there's a
set on the display chassis that JZD & the DeLorean team are sitting
on/standing by (don't have my books availible right now). Does anyone
know if these rims are availible for the D? I doubt I'd ever switch
them out, but other then stock they appear to be the only ones that
do the car justice. Not really into the Fiero look, but I would want
rims as unique as my car if I ever did decide to change them.

We are now on course for a record number of DeLorean cars at our main annual
UK rally next Sunday ( 16th July) at the British Heritage Motor Centre at
Gaydon in Warwickshire tel 01926-641188.
21 cars are now booked in, including a French contingent, making this the
BIGGEST EVER gathering of DeLorean's in England! ...with still room for
more!
We will assemble in the first car park at Gaydon, by 10.00hrs. At 10.30 we
will drive in convoy to the far end of the site, to take up pole position
right in front of the Museum complex. In front of the Ferrari's,
Lamborghini's, Aston Martins, etc.
It is a great honour for our DeLorean cars to be given this "first class,
VIP treatment".
Don't forget this rally is open for anyone to attend...its only the DeLorean
drivers who get in free though!
Look forward to seeing you all there.

I put one of the Delco alternators on my Ducillier-equipped DeLorean many
years ago using the method Darryl mentioned in an earlier post. Used a
universal alternator "J" bracket from Pep Boys, cut it short to fit (where
to cut will be obvious when you have the bracket or there is a diagram in an
early Delorean World I think), and saved the original Ducillier alternator
and it's bracket for "later".
The original belt will work but you might want to get one about an inch
shorter or the battery lead will be a stretch to fit on the alternator's
output post. I made a wiring harness adapter so I wouldn't have to change
the original harness' Ducillier alternator spade connectors. Like
sure...right... I'm going to put the Ducy back on someday...
If you are replacing a Motorola alternator you are on your own for connector
information. In any case you'll need a small two-spade connector that plugs
into the Delco alternator. It's available in any auto parts store hanging on
a bubble pack. Should have a red and a white lead attached; connect the red
one directly to the alternator's output post and connect the white one to
the lead in the D's alternator wiring harness that connects to the
dashboard's BATT lamp (don't recall the wire color but easy to find on the
D's schematic). The second wire in the Ducy's wire harness is no longer
used.
The alternator comes with a pulley assembly in two versions- one has an open
fan, and the other has a round plate attached to the front of the fan to
force air to enter the fan around the edges of the fan blades. Probably
makes little difference but I used the one with the plate on the theory that
it may run a little cooler--sucks at least some air from below the car,
rather than directly from the muffler surface.
In any case make sure your muffler head shields are in place or you'll run
the risk of baking your new alternator to a premature death.
Working fine for 10+ years or so...

Subject: Water Temp. & Fans
At what temperature should the fans come on at? I don't think that mine has
ever come on since I've owned the car but I don't drive it much and have never had
and overheating problems.......until yesterday. I got it out and drove it around town
a little when the temperature started to get a little higher than usual so I brought it
back home and and when I got out I had a lot of coolant pouring out of my radiator.
I know that my fans weren't on when I got out and the temperature was working on
getting about 220 degrees. I should probably invest in a fanzilla shouldn't I. Is there
and common ailments for the fans that I should check out while I'm messing with the
radiator? Hopefully my radiator can be fixed and I won't have to buy a new one. I'll see.

This one is kind of tricky to answer...
When insuring the DeLorean, you may want to put your parents on as
the primary drivers of the car, even if you will be. If you yourself
legaly own the car, then you will need to atleast need to put one of
your parents on the registration (I don't belive that the title will
be nessisary as well). If more then one name appears on the vehicle
registration, it means that at least half of the time someone else
will have access to the car, thus meaning if you can't drive it all
the time, then you are only a "part time driver." Good discount here.
Depending on you insurance companies policies, you may want to have
another, less expensive car to insure become listed as YOUR primary
vehicle (same dual name registration applies). Although even this can
sometimes be odd. i.e. im 21 y/o male, but it's cheaper to insure me
as the primary driver for a 1981 DeLorean then it is for a 1997
Hyundai Accent! So a good deal will depend of your insurance agents
profile of the car. Plus if your parents are willing to help out,
they will be invaluable! At your age, you will also need to be
careful of some insurance companies like Progressive's restrictions.
A few years ago, Progressive wanted to charge my family an outragous
amount to insure me, just based on age. In order to avoid the costs,
they wanted my parents to sign an extra form that limited my coverage
to only one car. If I was involved in an accident with any other
vehicle then the one I was covered for, the insurance company would
not cover anything, and I could be charged for driving with out valid
insurance even though I sent a payment every month! Something to
watch out for... A great deal has been written about insuring
DeLoreans by myself and other DMLer's over the years, so the archives
are an excellent place for information. Just remember, the agent is
there to work for you, NOT against you. If things don't go you way
you can always walk out of thier office because you are in control.

Can extreme heat damage a new thermo time switch? Ever since my car
blew it's otterstat and overheated, I've had starting problems which
have gotten progressivly worse. When the engine is cold to mild, it
will not turn over with out swapping plugs to fire the cold start
valve. And from here it can still take 1-2 additional cranks to get
it going. But, if I insert a jumper wire to ground the thermo time
wire, or if I swap the plugs BEFORE I crank the engine, the engine
fires up in 1-2 seconds. About 10-15 seconds after the motor then
starts to sputter untill it warms up, but I believe that this may be
caused by a clogged Control Pressure Regulator. Although it didn't
exceed it, the motor did reach 260 degrees when it overheated.

As far as the bumpers, I use a product called "bumper black", I believe it's
made by McGuire's or Mothers. The trim I use a spray paint called Black
Satin. Not much different from Krylon truthfully. The louvres I had more
of a problem with, as the heat from the engine and the sun would constantly
keep bleaching them gray. So I used black grill spray paint, it keeps it's
color up to 1000 degrees. So far, so good.

I bought a new oil sending unit from Wingd2"AT"aol.com who is associated
with Mid-States Delorean Club. The unit was sent out to me
promptly. I installed it and was disappointed to find that it did
not work properly.
After several emails back and forth I returned it to Marty and he
tested it and found it to be defective as I reported. He replaced
it, sent it promptly and refused to accept payment for the unit.
I do not know how you can find a more helpful, understanding,
communcative and ethical person than Marty. I am pleaently surprised
and I thought that it was important to relate my positive experience
for all to see. I only wish more people in the business world were
like him and maintained his style of business ethics.
He apparently sells other products and I would recomend that all of
you give him strong consideration for modifications and parts for
your car.

My car is currently at Micah Frymans house (one of the guys in the
Mid-State-Delorean club). He has had it for about 2 months giving it
a GREAT once, twice, three....times over. (It's getting some work
done to it that should have been done long ago). I have been very
pleased with the work and effort that he has put into my car so far.
He has updated me weekly the entire time and letting me know of
things I need to look out for.
I just wanted to give a public "Thank you" to Micah for offering
to do the work on my car(he knew I needed help from reading all my
MANY MANY postings to this list). ANd thank you to Marty for
creating some of the updated parts that are going into my car to make
it that much better. From what I know I should be getting the new
oil pressure sensor and the SS brake lines.
In all, I want to thank the Mid-State-Delorean Club, particularly
Micah Fryman for offering such great updated part (if you haven't

Scot, I whole-heartedly agree. As a group of limited production car
owner's we're very fortunate to have so many helpful people at our disposal.
However, Marty seems to be one of those who doesn't get much recognition for
all he's done in providing us with parts and upgrades. I've only bought two

I used a product called "all purpose condition and cleaner" made by
Tannery. Works on leather, vinyl, rubber, trim, & fiberglass. Since
applying it, the louvers have stayed dark black ever since along with
the engine cover, windshield trim, side moldings, the rocker panels,
spoiler, quarter panel intakes, & the under body. And it hasn't
washed off since. Although I can't say the same for the dummy vents
behind the doors and the side mirrors which turned gray again, and
the ERM frame around the licence place which is so porus it just
attracts dust anyway. But since it worked so well on the louvers
alone, you may want to try it for a while as a substitute for
painting.

p.s. I have a white streak on my back bumper which looks like that
stuff that meter maids rub on your tires. How can it get this stuff
off? I know a long time ago someone else on the list had the same
problem, how'd you fix it?

I think the spring ring inside the wheel hub, has moved, so the hub and
brake-disc
have moved outwards, causing the brake disc to rub against the outer brake
pad.
When installing the new angle-drive, you probably removed these items. To
see
if this has happened, you’d have to remove the wheel, brakes and the wheel
hub.
Inside the hub you’ll find the ball bearing, kept in place by a ring, which
you can
remove with a pair of pliers. Check the groove in which it is seated for
dirt and sand.
Also check the brake disc for excessive wear. If the disc is grooved
severely, you
Should replace both discs.

Subject: Coolant leak.
While in the garage today, I noticed a small puddle of antifreeze on
the ground below the engine. Going up the engine block I discovered
that it's leaking out from behind the water pump. With a flash light
I was able to see a tiny pool of orange coolant below/behind the
water outlet hose on the right side. The water pump is a brand new
genuine DeLorean part, however all of the hoses that I can see behind
the pump look to all be original and feel soft. Going back thru the
archives I found a posting to perform a pressure test to check where
the leak is comming from. But anyone tell me where I would find
the "weep hole" on the water pump to see if it's the culprit?

I had a terrible time when I went to get my D. insured. First of all, State
Farm said they wouldn't insure it no matter what. This didn't make any
since because most other DeLorean owners I know have normal DeLorean
policies with them. They also said they wouldn't insure Bricklin or
DeTomaso (the other two cars I was looking into then.) I finally found the
"Classic Car" policy and had to bring it to their attention. They
reluctantly took it.
I also looked into insuring the D. with another company--but I'd pay a
second set of premiums which is near $1,000 a year. I'm 18, male,
unmarried, living in IL, multi-car discount, good student discount, and all
tickets have been dropped or reduced to non-moving violations.
So I put the D. on this Classic Car deal. I have a 2,000 mile restriction
though (Odd, since I know several other people on this policy WITHOUT this
restriction.) Anyway, it's about $134 every six months valued at $20,000.
Here's the deal on how to rig this. The policies and cars should all be
under your parents names (preferably the one with the better record.)
You're then covered for all the cars. Now, pick the LEAST valued car under
a normal policy and insure yourself as the PRIMARY driver of that car. This
could be the D. if they cover it under a normal policy.
In my case, the D. was the least valued, but it wouldn't work with the
Classic Car deal. Sooooo, I'm listed as primary driver of our 96 GMC Yukon
2-door, the second least valued car. My insurance is near $2,000 a year on
that. This covers me to drive any of the other cars. My daily driver, a 93
Cadillac Allante, would be about $7,000 a year if I was insured as a primary
driver of it. It would be $4,000 if I was put on my mother's 95 Cadillac
ETC. You can see how it REALLY makes a difference here.
Even in the summers when we put the Yukon in storage and get out the other
two Allantes, we still keep full insurance on it because it's much cheaper
than moving me to the Eldo ETC policy.
Insurance is a crazy business..........But believe it or not, my agent is
the one who recommended the above money-saving method.

I've always ordered from The Tire Rack when buying tires online, but I have
checked prices against Discount Tire: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/
You may want to check your Yellow Pages for Yokohama dealers in your area.
Sometimes their prices are reasonable, and it can be nice to build up a
relationship with a local shop. Then again, there are some shops that I
definitely don't want a relationship with!
FWIW, I've priced tires locally and from some of the online sources before,
and Tire Rack is always among the least expensive, and usually THE least
expensive. Their service has been excellent. I've purchased 6 sets of tires
from them over the past 4 years.
