Subject: DML: Parts cross reference utility expiration

I just realized today that I have inadvertently forgotten to disable the
auto-expiration of the pre-release version of the DMC parts cross
reference database utility, so those using the utility will be
disappointed the next time you launch it since it will complain about
having expired.

Fortunately, I will be uploading a new version on Monday that adds a
couple parts cross reference libraries as well as a couple new features
including print capability. For download convenience, the program will
also be broken into two separate parts -- one for the bitmaps of the
various parts diagrams (which don't typically change between releases)
and one separately installable part for the actual program and parts
cross reference lists. This will hopefully reduce the download burdens
for those trying to keep up with the myriad of program updates I have
been posting lately.

Sorry about any inconvenience to those which have copies of the program
that expired today.

Happy New Year!

Hey All DMLers:

I found a DeLorean for sale for only $6500.  The only things i
need
so far is the inner window that goes down on the drivers side.  Another
thing
is that it wouldn't start and the doors won't open if their life depended
on
them, i mean i almost got stuck in it when i was leaning over init and it
fell
on my feet.  If anyone of you have that window for sale I would like it
if you
would e-mail me a NJP548@xxxxxxxx

I'm not sure if it would be of help to anyone, but I also have a copy of
DMC engineering drawing 106072 (2 sheets) which was the wiring diagram
we were using at Legend Industries for the early vehicles when making
the conversions to the prototype turbo test mules.

Let me know if you're interested and I can enquire about the cost to
duplicate. It will need to be a photocopy, as I do not have a sepia.

Hi Mark,

I agree with Gary, I have been pricing brand new engine Long Blocks Which
are about $1200. I have also been offered several complete DMC engines
(never used in DMC) for barely over $2K.

Call Houston and ask them what a new mill will go! Installing the engine
is not a big deal, check "Automotive engineers" in your area. They can do
the whole Job for around $800 +/- change.

I would get the compression check elsewhere just to confirm the current
readings.

Have you upgraded the clutch line to the steel braided variety ? If you
have not this may be your problem ... the original plastic line would
expand and baloon thereby making shifting into 1st and or 2nd difficult
if not impossible depending on the temp of the engine and atmosphere.

Owning a Delorean, and having driven a 94 'vette on occasion, I can give
you some information.

As far as which car to choose, that depends on you.

If your looking for speed, get the Corvette.  If you are looking for
style, get the Delorean.

The delorean is older, so you can expect it is be less reliable, but the
cost of repair should be pretty comparable.

The Delorean will retain, and possibly (I hope) increase in value, where
the corvette will be loosing value as it ages.

If you looking to turn heads, the Delorean is the only way to go!

We also have oxygenated fuel here in New Jersey.  While I don't know the
answers to your questions, my thought on this topic was that the
Delorean emission systems are not that much different than many other
cars on the road.  Therefore, I considered it safe.  I also notice a
drop in performance on all of my cars when they put that junk in the
gas, not to mention that the fumes make me nauseous.

I agree, I do not think that rob would risk his reputation trying to
"hose" anyone.

My post did not include some details that further enforce that rob is
not just looking for work.

First, Rob did say that I can drive it the way it is, and just wait till
it gets so bad that I need to get it fixed, although he said that I
would not pass inspection next year.

He also told me to hold off on deciding what to do, because he was going
to try and make a few calls to people who had more experience with the
Turbo Modified motors. Get information on possible causes of this
problem, and recommendations on fixing it. This is a big plus.  I like
to hear that he was willing to research the problem, and give me all of
the available information before I made a decision on what to do.

Further more, Rob asked that I pick up the car either way, and bring it
back to him in the spring if I decide to go for the repair.  If he was
looking for the work, he'd keep the car.

Adjust the crossgate linkage. This can be done either at the
transmission, or can be done by removing the shifter boot and removing
and turning the linkage. You either have to lengthen or shorten the
cable. Be careful, it is a very sensitive adjustment. One or two turns
makes a large difference.

If you have the service manual this is on page F:07:01. A summary of the
instructions is:
"With transmission in neutral and shift lever in 3-4th gate, shift lever
stop pin should be centered in cross gate plate notch"

and

"Shortening cable will move shift lever stop pin to right"

When you are finished, be sure all locknuts are tight. That's what caused
my original problem.

Not neary enough information to come to any conclusion.  I don't know
what kind of compression checker Rob Grady uses, but I am familiar with
the compression checkers used on light aircraft engines.  Leaks on
aircraft engines are usually traced to a carbon chip under a exhaust
valve or a burned exhaust valve.  With a turbo on the manifold, it's
difficult to tell where the air is going, by the rings or the valve.
The next most common is a stuck ring.  A few squirts of Marvel Mystery
oil in the cylinder and a half pint of MM oil added to the oil and a
couple hours of driving will sometimes free up a ring. If the cylinder
is pumping oil, thats another story, that could mean a broken ring.

Was that $3000 for rings in just one cylinder or the entire engine?

Subject: DML: Sticky Steering Rack

As part of my front-end cleanup, I have my steering rack out of the car.
There has been a minor problem with this thing that has been nagging me.
If the car (or the rack, now) sits for any length of time (an hour or
two) there is a slight tension (stiction?) to overcome when starting to
turn the steering wheel. This is only noticable when turning the wheel
the first time (like when backing out of the garage), after that it is
fine. I wasn't sure whether it was in the column, body bushing, or rack,
but now I can tell its in the rack.

I haven't taken the pinion cover off yet, and since this was considered a
"No User (or mechanic) Servicable Parts Inside" piece by DMC there is no
tech info on it. Has anyone run into this? If I open it up, is there
anything to look at/lube/adjust?

I noticed a '81 DeLorean for sale in my area.  The ad info: 17k mi, auto,
gray int., great condition $17,500.  The phone number is a Franklin, TN
code, though I know nothing of the car and have not seen it driving
around.
I live here in Franklin and would gladly go look at the car and get the
real scoop if anyone is interested...

The last time I looked the rings were accessed from the bottom end as well
as the top. Anyone understanding the complexity of the PRV engine would
understand the reason for the cost. On the other hand, $3,000 is probably
more than half way to a new engine.

I can't help you on the source of the fuel baffle/filter but it is
easily cleaned up with ordinary soap and water and a tooth brush, that
is if it isn't ripped.
