I do. Hardcastle was a retired Judge, McCormick was a ex-con ex-race car
driver released in his custody. the acted as PI. The car was a GT. style
custom job. It looked like it was built from the ground up. I remember
it quite well as I was a regular viewer and thought the car was pretty
cool. I can't conceive that it was built on a D !!! There was nothing D
about it. FYI the guy who played Hardcastle was the guy from Family
affair.

Your VIN is 10150.  The first DeLorean to come off the assembly line
was #00500, so anything with an earlier number would have to be a
pre-production car.  I believe that 1982 VINs started at 10000, so you
have an early 82.

This Saturday, April 11, 1998 there will be a car show at the
Thomasville High School. Alabama

Registration is $15 and is from 8-12.  Judging starts at 12 and prizes
will be awarded at 3.

Thomasville, Alabama is about 100 miles north of Mobile on Highway 43.

At least three of the Alabama owners are scheduled to attend and we are
hoping there will be others.

Come on up and join us, the more the merrier.

If you let me know that you will be there, I will try to reserve enough
spaces for all of us.  We plan on being there between 8 and 9 am.

Bring a chair and an umbrella so you can have some shade to sit under.

The very existence of the "Start Inhibit Relay" annoys me.  I can
understand why your automatic needs this relay, but why does my
5-speed have one?

I have the same intermittent starting problem you have, and my mechanic
just put in a *brand* *new* start inhibit relay purchased from one of the
major suppliers.  Between your experience and mine I suspect that the
relay itself is not the source of the problem.

Symptoms:
Sometimes my DeLorean engine just won't crank.  The fuel pump does
engage briefly, and other electrical systems work properly.  I can put my
hand on the SI relay and feel it click (or try to click?) but the engine
still
does not crank.  The strange thing is I get it to start by walking away
from the car for a few minutes and trying again.  This seems to be
completely random.  It doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold, or if
the
battery has a full charge, or if the weather is rainy or sunny.

This does not happen very often, and it has never left me stranded.
I can always get my DeLorean started by simply waiting a few minutes
and trying again.  What does my car do during those few minutes?
I honestly have no idea.

Well Patrick, I've had my Delorean here in Phoenix for over 8 months now
and have never had a case of vandalism. (knock on wood).  I've parked in
some not-so-nice areas too.  Maybe I'm just lucky, but everyone I've met

Well, I (kinda) fixed the problem.   There are a couple things you may
want
to try next time it won't crank.

First off, what should work is to pull the start inhibit relay off, put
the
key in the "run" position, and jump the top and bottom contacts of the
start inhibit relay socket.  This should engage the starter solenoid and
thus, start the car.  What I had to do to make mine start with the key was
to run a wire from the left contact on the starter inhibit relay socket to
a ground (thus eliminating my neutral safety switch).. I used the left pin
on the A/C illumination relay socket since I pulled that relay out and
replaced it with a resistor. Works every time now.  Since you're on a
standard tranny, your left contact should already be grounded, but it
could
be a poor connection or something.  Otherwise it's the ignition switch not
giving enough juice to the relay to cause it to energize.  Have you tried
a
multimeter on the right and left contacts?

Take care!

I don't think this is particular to DeLoreans.  Corvettes and Porsches get
vandalized, too.

The stainless on a DeLorean is more vandal resistant than most car
bodies because it doesn't have paint.  A minor scratch can be rubbed out
and look good as new for no cost.  If someone sprays paint on your
stainless you can often clean it off without hurting the finish.  Any
vandalism bad enough to hurt a DeLorean would be even worse on an
ordinary car.

I thought I'd post a couple of cool little car things that I found...

1) Vehicle / Radio theft deterrent:  When engaged (I'm assuming from a
standard car alarm) this device will constantly emit a cloud of dense
smoke, thus making it impossible for the villian to see what he is doing,
and impossible to drive the car away.

2) The ultimate in convenience:  If you have an electric garage door
opener, this device hooks up to your high-beams, so you flash your lights
to open/close/stop the garage door.  (I saw this sweet baby, and I rigged
up my own.  I just took my garage door opener and taped the button to be
pressed all the time.  I then removed the 9V battery, got a 12V-to-9V
converter from Radio Shack, attatched the output to the opener, and the
input to the high-beam relay, and there you go. When I flash the lights,
it
gives power to the opener (which is pressed) and it operates the door.  I
just stuffed everything in the relay compartment. )

3) No more rust:  This one is pretty cool..  It's an electronic device
that
you attatch to steel, and because of the signals it sends, it stops rust.
The application that it is made for is autobody rust, but I don't see why
this wouldn't work for frame rust.

4) Keep tabs on your auto: This one isn't too unique but I felt it should
get honorable mention:  Car alarm w/ 2 mile pager.  I found a couple of
brands that offer this device.  To me, what good is a car alarm unless it
has a pager.  There are also a celular/pager system for cars.  This device
calls your pager from a celular phone in your car when the alarm is
triggered.  It says it takes about 60 seconds to reach you, which, in my
opinion, takes too long.

5) Rear deck lighting:  Like most of you, I'm sure one or both of your map
lights are toast.  My front light is history, but fortunately my rear
light
worked fine, so I removed it and used it in the front.  However, this left
me without a light in the rear. Well, I haven't done it yet, but Circuit
City sells these little 12" "sticks" of colored neon tubes.  There are
many
little "ports" on the underside of the trim where the rear map light is
(and where light could shine out).  You may want to put a couple of those
tube inside the trim for a cool interior light.  Since neon is such
low-power, and the colored light would illuminate without being "too
bright" you could probably have them on all night.

If anyone is interested, I can get the websites that I saw this stuff at..
I have most of them bookmarked at home...

Sounds like you may need a new ignition switch.  Use a voltmeter
determine if the start relay is getting any voltage when you turn the key.
If it doesn't, suspect the ignition switch.

threads.  Try one of the newer brands which have chemicals which do more
on

This is one of the reasons why I don't drive my DeLorean too much.
Where I come from, people get very jealous very quickly.  If you got
something nice or out of the ordinary, consider it vanalised.

Best advice I can give: take care of your D, install an alarm system
or cut-off switch.  Keep your doors locked.  And if you're really
paranoid, like myself, also put The Club on your steering wheel.
You can have never to much protection.  As far as the outside goes,
where people can get at it?  Well, just don't leave out where you
can't see it.

By routing the current through the relay contacts the reqirements of the
starter solenoid windings won't cause arching of the ignition switch
contacts. If relays weren't used on many of the curcuits the sevice life
of
many switch contacts would be greatly reduced. If there's doubt about the
contacts in the ignition switch, I'd think you could just insert a 12 volt
test light between the ignition switch terminal in the start inhibit relay
plug and ground. When the ignition switch is turned to the start position,
the light should come on. The starter curcuit is grounded through the
transmission harness and it was stated that the harness was changed. It
might be worth double checking everything to assure there's a proper
ground.

Hi,
I don't think that a volt meter will help. Without any load the
voltage might be fine, but once there is load the voltage can even
drop to nothing. You can check the voltage with the relay connected
but that will not be easy. If the voltage drops below about 9 V under
load (with relay connected) the problem is somewhere between the
ignition switch and the relay. You can try measuring the voltage at
the ignition switch itself. Before the switch and after. That way you
can pin point the location of the fault. Good luck

# 110458) to sell, both are grey and like new. They came with the car
that I just bought and I have no need to keep them.

A quick check of the DeLorean Motor Company website (www.usadmc.com)
shows these parts sell for $338.21 for the binnacle and $175.42 for the
kneebar. I will take $290 for the binnacle and $140 for the kneebar.
These prices include shipping in the US, outside US I'll add the shipping
costs.

Email me if interested.

This brings to mind our upcoming Cincinnati trip in June where we'll be

this stupid little thing is not giving that injector fuel, so it must be

I uploaded the latest version of the DMC parts reference software.
This version includes some enhanced browsing capability by displaying
the organization of the parts manual in a tree-view window. This

more plug-in cross reference modules for the next release.

If you already have a previous version of the software, you can
upgrade to the latest version by downloading the update disk. The

Does anyone know of a voice feedback module that monitors your warning
lights and gives you a pre-recorded message?  (i.e. "Your door is ajar" )
It's kinda dorkey, but I've always wanted my car to say that.  I was
thinking about buying one of those little voice record/playback modules at
Radio Shack, and hooking it up to play when the warning light comes on,
seems like there would be a better way though...

Thanks!

Subject: Re: DML: radios and tinted windows

Sorry, I did not finish writing the e-mail and accidently sent it out, by
hitting the button.

Please add this to the first part wriiten earlier.

I think, I left off, where there was a pair of 4" X 10" Pioneer speakers
fitted and mounted at the rear wall.  All the speakers wiring are Monster
Cables.  Interconnects cables between head unit, the the amps and CD unit
are
special silver cables, from HI-END audio just for the sound quality
(cables do
not all sound the same, just as different gasoline or oils).

The sound in my vehicle is extremely good, not great, because of the
vehicle's
chambers.  Sound has a lot to do with the vehicle's enclosure and
matching of
componets.  The sound DOES NOT SOUND BOOMY, ELECTRONIC, SIZZILING, THICK
or
THIN, just right.  It could use l little more deeper bass, this is the
lack of
avalibilty of "chamber space" in the vehicle.  More chamber space produce
a
smoother bass, and the Delorean just don't have it.  All bass speakers
needs
spaces to produce "smoother thumpless bass".  Too much room space and it
is
"running mud sound".   Absence of space here.  Midrange and highs are
okay to
excellent on all the array of speakers installed.  There is eight speakers
total, to  surrounding the passenger and the driver.   Remember, sound is
very
subjective. The best way you know you got it right, when the sound will
not
become fatiguing or hurting to your ears and senses, especially on long
drives.  The other way you know you got it right if you are a musicain
and/or
work in the entertainment or sound business to gauge this subject.  After
all,
it is what can you live with as sound quality and money you can afford to
it.

All sound system must try to "produce a life like image", not just
mediocer
sound or noise.  Leave the original equipment, if it is okay, if not,
change
it for better sound quality.  This combination will produce quality
sound.

Many units were installed and removed for final decision.  Selected and
not
settled.  If it did not sound right, then pull it out.  I my self listen
to a
large variety of music, from classical to rock.  This system does it all
with
"correctness" as in my audio system in my home, extreme super high end
with no
money as no object.   Again, as for the vehicle on the road, I do long
drives,
better then 4 to 10 hours at a times. A bad sound system can make you very
irritable and tired.

All Blaupaukt Head (radio, cassette, CD, etc.) units in my opinion are in
visual harmony with the rest of the panel and the car's interior.  It fits
very well in style, color and as an overall a unit.  The unit looks
"correct",
turned on or off.  Some other manufactures looks obtrusive, or too over
designed and does not sound well all around through the audio spectrum.

On another subject matter, tinting.   In New York City heavy tinting is
not
allowed in the front driver and passenger windows, only the rear windows.
Fines and removal of tint are imposed and mandated.  Light approved
tinting is
permited.

I have applied a 3 1/2" visor designed tint going from the front to back
on
the top of my two door's windows.  They are silver in color.  They are
reflective as well as see through.  They keep the sun off your head.  They
blend in and looks "correct" on the exterior of the  vechicle.  The tint
does
not cover the entire window and does not violate the NYC dark tint
regulations.  It works very well in the summer days.

If you do it yourself, just remove all the front, rear trim and the over
head
panel.  Clean window and apply tint.  The tint required is 4 1/4" X 36".
Affix and align tint carefully trim and squeege.  Remount all trims and
ovehead panel.
Cost is less then $5.00 for tint and if your handy about 1 1/2 hours work.

If it was one of the shims used in the control pressure regulator, each
car
is a bit different as they are used to set the control pressure. Adding or
subtracting shims increases or decreases the amount of fuel pressure it
takes to open the valve and allow excess fuel to return to the tank.
Without proper gauges
it's only going to be a guess as to how much shims you need. I wouldn't
think it would be too costly to run it through a shop familiar with Bosch
K-Jetronic fuel injection. One shim, more or less, shouldn't make a big
enough difference that the car wouldn't run. There is also an o-ring on
the
control pressure valve stem. You could check that that is still there.
Beyond that the fuel distributor shouldn't have been disassembled. The
manuals all state disassembling it will ruin it.

I just got my DMC-12 back from DMC Houston (I drove it to Chicago) after

very professional, fast, friendly and overall relatively inexpensive.  I
just wanted to give my kudos to them and their service.  The car

but it appears to be identical. It has worked just fine and after over
3000
miles, no problem. I paid about
 $ 90.00 for it.

I just had mine apart and can see how that could happen. At best it's a
very snug fit. I'd suspect that you'll need to grind the hole larger
where the bottle goes thru the body, OR install all new rivnuts in the
correct location. Remember, this was something of a "whittle-to-fit"
car, so odds are good that it was misfit at the factory. By the way -
did you end up with an extra cap for the washer bottle? Mine's broken
and I haven't been able to find a replacement. Email me privately.

I did mine - I don't recall exactly how but I'm not above "nudging" a
wrench with a large hammer in this kind of circumstance. Sometimes the
impact is necessary to break it loose.
