Sean,
The clock does draw a relatively large amount of current (30+ mills), =
especially when combined with a memory stereo it can exceed 60 mills (at =
least on mine). I'm sure you're aware of the low output alternator =
problem with the standard DMC-12 ducy alternator. This alone should not =
wear down a battery in a few days, but if I recall, you have the classic =
"cycling fan" A/C problem. Those fans draw a ton of current, especially =
when they start ( almost double amperage ). It's possible that your =
battery and charging system is battered ( pun intended ) by the constant =
draw of the clock and the cycling fans ( every 5 seconds ) when you run =
your AC. I suggest checking your alternator and battery. I ran my =
DMC-12 with a digital multimeter in the lighter socket for several days =
to learn first hand the torment the electrical system goes through. Now =
when I drive in hot weather I check my "battery fuel" more often than my =
gasoline. At least until a buy a bigger battery or put in a new =
alternator.

By now everyone who submitted information to the DeLorean Owners
Directory before May 15, 1998 should have been notified of their login
and password for the DOD Members Only Lounge.
There are still a few registrants who I have not been able to reach after
repeated E-mails. If you registered but you haven't heard from me it is
because your E-mail address field was blank, incomplete, or contained
an error. If you want your login and password you can fill out the
correction form at the DMC News Home Page or E-mail me at the

If you submitted after May 15, I have your information in a queue while I
work on contacting those last few people from the previous round.
Please be patient. You should hear from me in a week or so.
Note that the DOD is not the same as the DML. Even if the DML has your

Subject: DML: Door Torsion Bar Adjustment
Every year in the Spring, De Lorean Midatlantic holds its Annual
Door
Adjustment Social at which the members adjust the torsion bars on
those Ds that need it. First, we determine if the D needs it. THis
is easily and quickly done by replacing the door strut with a fresh
strut supplied by Rob Grady from P. J. Grady, Inc. Rob usually
comes
down from his Long Island shop to perform safety checks on the Ds.
If the door fails the door strut check, then a torsion bar
adjustment
is performed. We do it safely with three members and the proper jig.
We have not damaged a D or injured anyone in the ten or so years
that
we have been performing this service for members.
THe services described above are complimentary benefits to members
of
De Lorean Midatlantic.

Yes, it is normal for the radio to lose power when the power window fuse
is
pulled, they are both fed by fuse # 11. The digital clock and radio
display
are designed to provide a dimmer illumination at night to match the
instrument lights, when the headlights are switched off the clock and
radio
display brightness to compensate for brighter daylight. When you remove
fuse # 11 you disconnect power from the main lighting switch thereby
causing the clock & radio lights to dim.

Will stereo amplifiers fit under my DeLoreans seats? Now that the
car is running and driving great, I need some tunes. Ive already
replaced the front speakers with Infinity Kappa 3 1/2 inch. The rear
deck will serve as a speaker wall(idea pirated from AmpZilla) with
seperate tweeters and 6 1/2 inch round mid-bass speakers. They will
need one 2 channel amp. The storage space behind driver seat is perfect
for that sub-woofer (8 inch) which will need another amp. Has anyone
else done this? What kind of stereo systems have you had success with?
Any comments?

I have recently purchased a Delorean (at auction - couldn't resist). The
car
has two minor "scuffs" on the stainless steel on one of the wings. They
don't seem too deep but they are noticeable. Should I try to polish them
out
with Scotchbrite or am I on to a loser?
Are there any metalwork companies in the UK that any British owners would
recommend?
Any suggestions gratefuly received.

I have been putting some thought in to how to set up a nice stereo in
the DMC.
It does not look like there is enough space under the seats for
anything. AMPzilla is the best setup I have seen to preserve as much
storage as possible, but it is expensive. I don't know how good it
sounds because I still have not heard it! Did anyone get a chance to
crank it in Cincinnati?
If you do mount speakers in the storage space, you should make that
enclosure air tight. The stock 4X6 speakers are in the same air space,
and if you leave this unsealed, you will loose your low end response.
I have designed many car stereo systems, and I can say that it would be
a lot of work to optimize this setup. The materials (metal and
fiberglass) are not very good for speaker enclosures. In addition, the
odd shape makes it hard to seal, and near impossible to control the air
volume.
Most 6.5 inch "Mid-Woofers" usually work best in .5ft^3 of air space.
(YMMV based on the speaker itself, this is a general rule) But even with
that, you are not going to get much sound below 150Hz. A 8 inch woofer
in the storage compartment would help, but that space is also very
small, and would require modification to properly seal.
The DeLorean is just lacking the space needed to put a real killer
stereo system in. The way I see it, you have 3 choices:
1. Work with the stock locations, or make slight modifications to
improve the sound without going nuts. Kayo is a good example of this.
He built small enclosures that fit in to the kick panels in the front.
The system sounds great, but it is not a real "thumper". It wont bounce
any quarters off the roof! IMHO, he did a great job... I really like
his shifter too!
2. Spend the cash, and get the AMPZilla from PJ Grady. This will give a
big improvement with minimal space loss. As I said, I still have not
heard this system crank, but it does look cool! Based on the theory of
design, I also doubt this system will bounce quarters off of the roof.
3. Loose all of your storage space (and buy a luggage rack!). Curtis
Bryant's highly modified red car in Cincinnati did this. Curtis built a
box that took up the entire storage area. A local shop here in New
Jersey (Interstate Electronics) used to have a DMC show car (for car
audio shows) and they had a band pass sub woofer box in the back that
went to the ceiling, and covered the back window! This is a little
overkill, the setup Curtis has is adequate. I also did not get a chance
to hear that system, but the concept has the potential to bounce
quarters off your roof!
For the system I have been slowly working on, I will be building a box a
bit smaller than what Curtis has. His box was a little big, and
restricted how far the seats could go back, and may make it painful to
get to the relay service area. I plan on using the Kicker "Solobaric"
speakers which claim to have a design that requires much less air space
than standard woofers (they are expensive!). If you are old fashioned,
you can use 4 drivers to create a Isobaric system, but this will be
heavy and requires a lot of power.... Power = big amplifiers = more
space and electricity.
If you do choose to use the locked storage space behind the driver seat
for a small woofer (I don't like this idea), check out the Solobaric.
You will probably get better response in the smaller space, but these
speakers are critical. You need to keep the interior air volume within
the factory specification, and make sure the box is sealed tight!
Let us know what you do, and how it works out!

If they are not that deep, Scotchbrite pads should do the trick. If
not, you will need to find someone with the special tool to regrain the
SS.
