Dave,
Could you give a little more info. I'm guessing that you mean when the
fans
come on to cool the engine that they never shut off. First off, is the
temp
getting back down to 165 degrees?? If not, the fans won't shut off. You
may
have some air trapped in the system so you may want to try to bleed it
out.
Also, if the A/C is on, they will run all the time as well.
If this dosen't help, please let me know,
Thanks,
Duke
PS Take the gun out of your mouth, point it at the DeLorean and your
pockets
will fill back up.

James,
Right under the time, you'll see two little holes. One is for the hour,
and one is for the minute. Get a paper clip and insert the end of the
paper clip into the hole and hold it down. That will change the time.
Hope this helps,

There is a diode in the circuit that allows the fans to operate when the

James,
Under the numbers should be two flush pins with indentations. The one on
the left set hours, the one on the right sets minutes. If you have just
holes there, the circuit board has dropped down and let the pins fall
into the clock. Below the pins are surface mount switches on the board
and if the pins have dropped out, or are not aligned and do not change
the numbers when you push them, you will have to take the clock apart to
reset them. Its not difficult, but I can't remember whether I had to
epoxy or solder the board back into position.

Nick,
To add to what Joe has already said, the voltage regulator on the
alternator senses the car's electrical needs by reading the voltage at the
battery posts. If the battery is removed, the regulator thinks the car is
gulping all the amps it can and is craving an infinitesimal amount. The
alternator pumps out the most amps it can and electrical components on the
car are damaged: headlights explode, radios burnout, and sensitive
electrical equipment (such as onboard computers) are damaged. You may not
have had a problem before you disconnected the battery, but, depending on
how long it was disconnected for, you may have very serious problems now.

I also remember the burl wood dash board accessory. I have never seen

However, at the British car show here in Illinois, there was a vendor

I asked him if he could make one for a D and he said it was not a

I don't think so! Without the battery, the alternator puts out 14.4
volts
at whatever current is required to keep the system at 14.4 volts---except
it
is pulsating DC, not filtered. The alternator is actually a three phase
AC
generator with diodes and a voltage regulator ot produce pulsating DC at
14.4
volts at a frequency of three times its rotation rate. Headlights will
work
normally, the radio will whine, and the computer controlled equipment
will go
wild because it senses varying voltages. The battery acts as a buffer to
absorb the peaks and fill in between the peaks to give a smooth, non
rippling
voltage.

I have a similar problem that arose after replacing my thermostat. In my
case the fans will shut off, but just barely. I believe that in my case
the
condition is caused by the following factors:
The thermal switch in the coolant pipe that controls the cooling fans has
some built in hysteresis -- that is, when the thermal switch closes, it
remains closed until the sensed temperature is a bit below what it was
when
it first closed. In my case the switch closes and activates the fans about
one needle-width above the 160 degree mark on the temp gauge and remains
closed until the gauge needle is right at the 160 degree mark (I don't
know
that the mark is actually at 160 degrees, but its the unlabeled mark on
the
gauge that's halfway between 100 and 220).
My new thermostat seems to have a slightly higher temperature setpoint
than
my previous one and seems to like to keep the temperature at, or very
slightly above, the 160 degree mark on the temp gauge (my old thermostat
seemed to hold the temperature about a needlewidth below the 160 degree
mark). These two factors combine to create the following scenario: when
the
cooling fans kick on, they will stay on until the temperature dips low
enough for the hysteresis in the switch to kick it off, but my thermostat
setpoint is high enough that although the temperature comes down it won't
come down low enough for the thermal switch to kick off (or in my case the
thermostat allows the temperature to just barely dip low enough to satisfy
the thermal switch).
I don't know if you have a similar scenario, but in my case I believe the
solution is to get a thermostat with a slightly lower setpoint such that
the
temperature can come down enough to reliably have the cooling fans
disengage. Your mileage may vary.

Duke,
Sounds like a bad battery to chassis ground or a bad battery cell.
Depending on you Vin. your main battery ground is either at the right rear
trailing arm bushing or the right rear (gray) chassis rail below the "jump
start post" in the engine compartment. To check your battery go to any
service facility and ask them to do a "load test" on the battery. The
loose
wire under your dash is not the cause of your problem.

Subject: DML: Fuel Pickup Problems ...
About a year ago, I ran a question regarding a perplexing problem. The
car
killed as I let the clutch up going forward and it ran fine in reverse.
A
couple people responded that I should check the fuel pick-up. What I
found
was that the fuel pick-up was broken at the pump fitting. I cut it off
and
reassembled. To my dismay, the problem did not go away. After
discussing
with Joe, I rechecked and found the same problem. This time I made some
modifications until I can order the replacement parts.
In my case, there is no baffle, the in-tank mounting stud is gone and the
pickup is weighted down with lead strips. My guess is that the mass of
the
strips caused the hose to open going forward, causing the gas flow to
stop,
and going in reverse it would push it tight enough to allow gas flow.
A lot of people ask about mysterious engine stopping. Take a look at
your
fuel pickup arrangement. You may be surprised at what you find. When my
car
killed, it simply and quietly died. No noise or other warning. It
wasn't
until I talked with Joe that I realized that there was supposed to be a
mounting stud for a baffle and this would have kept the pickup from
"swinging" around the tank. It probably would have help the original
hose
last longer also.
The temporary fix has the pickup straight down from the pump on new hose
with
a plastic container as a fuel baffle. The disadvantage of this is that
I
may not have the pickup on the tank bottom, limiting the "range" of the
tank.
I thought I read that someone else has had to do the same but I cannot
find
it in the back issues. Can someone forward that listing?
The replacement hose (1/2 inch gas line) is SUBSTANTIALLY sturdier than
the
original but it does not have the bends that the original has. If I
create a
custom long term solution I'll keep you informed.
Thanks to those who originally pointed me towards the gas tank!!!

For those interested in Dick Ryan's cross-country bike ride:
I knew the Big Ride planned to pass through Cleveland, but the map on
the Internet did not give the specific streets. Then last Saturday
morning
while sweeping my front porch I saw a dozen bicycles passing by . . .
THE BIG RIDE WAS GOING RIGHT PAST MY HOUSE!
I immediately parked my DeLorean in the front yard to get attention. My
wife Patti and I quickly rummaged through the attic for posterboard to
make signs like:
"Hooray for the American Lung Association Big Riders!"
"Good Luck Riders!"
"Go 'Raddad' Dick Ryan!"
We hung the signs and set up a table with a pitcher of water and some
crackers in our front yard. Every time a group of riders passed by we
applauded and cheered them on. Some of our family and friends joined
in and eventually it looked like a party in our yard.
Through the course of the day dozens of riders stopped to sit in the
shade and visit with us. They said there were about 700 of them at that
point, and almost all of them knew Dick Ryan from Colorado. They talked
about him with awe. Apparently Raddad is a celebrity among the riders.
A few of the riders didn't want water, they just wanted to get a look at
the DeLorean. They wanted a picture of themselves beside the car, in
the car, or just the car by itself.
We stayed out there the rest of the day, but we never saw Dick Ryan.
Some of the riders said that he usually leads the pack, so he probably
passed by early while we were in the house making our signs. We did
hand business cards to some riders and support crew so they could let
Raddad know that we were cheering for him.

The Bosch fans use a different plug which means you had to do some wiring
changes. On the chance you might have got the wiring backwards, the fans
would be running backwards and hence would run till the cows come home
without reducing the temperature in the cooling system. You may want to be
sure the hookup is correct.

A couple years ago I had the same problem with out of balance between 65
and 70. One day I found a flat lead weight on the garage floor with
double
sided foam tape on one side. The tape was no longer sticky. The original
balance was to use stick-on weights to the inside of the wheel and they
would be held in place by the foam tape and centrifugal force. Fifteen
years did its thing on the tape and the weights fell off. I went to the
local Western Auto and they balanced the wheels with modern aluminum wheel
weights, which weren't available 17 years ago. Now its smooth as silk at
85.If you have your wheels balanced, make sure the original weights are
removed.

Yes, I have one of these, also from Walmart, but I use it a little
differently. The unit is a Schumacher "Automatic Onboard Battery
Charger/Maintainer 1.5 A". I cut the lugs off of the charger, and
installed the positive lug to the battery jump-start terminal next to the
coil cover, and the negative lug to the ground point on the frame just
below it. I got 2-conductor Molex connector set from Radio shack. The
female molex plug just hangs from the wires, and is easily tucked out of
sight behind the water bottle. The male molex plug gets installed on the
charger. If parking the car for a long time I now have a place to plug in
the charger. I have left the car parked as much as a month without it,
though, with no problem. I have an Interstate MT78 Battery and the
Motorola alternator.
In the winter I remove the battery from the car and keep it in the house,
with the charger attached with a similar molex plug wired to alligator
clips. I leave it plugged in all winter.
The only objection to keeping the charger permanently on the battery IN
THE CAR is acid gassing in the confined compartment. This is not such a
big deal in a more conventional car with the battery under the hood. With
the DMC sitting closed up, the battery fumes don't vent very well even
though there is a vent tube at the back of the battery compartment.
A friend who is an Interstate Battery distributor indicated that this
type of charger will extend the life of a battery greatly compared to
just letting it sit, even indoors. This is similar to the "Battery Buddy"
mentioned previously - it charges the battery to a set voltage, and the
turns the charge completely off until the voltage drops to a lower set
point. This is much better for a battery than a continuous trickle
charge.

Scott,
Consider yourself lucky; only half of the wheel balance problems can be
successfully corrected by a computer balance. If there are no dynamic
changes in your suspension system or wheels you will probably be able to
take advantage of the Walmart service for years to come, many other
DeLorean owners are not that lucky.

yugoman,
To correct your intermittent blower problem replace your blower circuit
breaker with a 35 amp unit.
Install your Fanzilla it will eliminate the electrical problems that you
describe.
To correct your fuel gauge problem install a Tankzilla.

Hi all,
Just to let you know I bought one of the Harbor Freight Battery
Float Chargers. It works like a charm. No more battery problems when I
let my car sit. I have also bought two more (one for my Triumph and one
for my motorcycle)

Joe,
A standard computer balance has always corrected my shimmying problems, =

Also, can you help me understand the procedure for on-the-car balancing?

I have also called local shops in Utah and nobody has heard of such a =

Subject: DML: Painting the dash?
Hallo DMCers,
Has anyone used plastic paint to rejuvinate their front dash? My dash
has suffered slightly from sun damage ... it seems 'bleeched' as if the
sun had reacted with a polish. As there are no cracks I am looking into
alternatives to replacement. My aircraft engineer buddy say they use a
plastic paint for this same problem in S.California. Has anyone had any
experience doing this ... looks good or a botch job?!?
Thanks for any comments.

Subject: DML: Dash removal
All:
My "new" DeLorean is in the shop for a few minor adjustments before I
take delivery. I am doing a few cosmetic things while waiting on the
shop to get the mechanical stuff done. I want everything else to be done
when it is up & running. I removed the rider seat yesterday & took it to
the upholstery shop for recovering. The dash needs a a few cracks
repaired. My question is this: can the dash be "easily" removed so I can
take it to the repair shop? Also, the air dam is in need of a little
mending. Can it be "easily" removed to the repair shop can be working on
that also? I'd appreciate any help you can give and keep up the great
work. De Miller, Kansas City.

I had a new black dash and binnacle painted gray. Since my existing glove
box door was discolored (it was brown due to sun damage), but had no
cracks,
I had it painted along with the dash so I wouldn't have to shell out the
bucks for a new door. It looked great...but one day the brown returned!!
The painted dash and binnacle were, and are currently fine, just the old
door's paint faded. I ended up buying a new glove box door instead of
repeating the process.
Having all parts painted is MUCH cheaper than buying new replacements and
will look perfectly fine, but I just wanted to warn you that the brown
might
someday return. Maybe my De Lorean just doesn't like me?
Good luck!

Have DeLorean. 1981. 5sp. PRV motor but it has a holded piston.
It's a good 10' car, not a showpiece but will make a dandy eye turning
beater :-) or put a 4.0L Rover motor in and it might go almost as fast
as one would like. Have title but it's a theft recovery and this is
GA so if you keep it in GA you will have to make roadworthy and have
inspected to obtain a new title. Also have bill of sale from the
insurance company. I've no time to mess with the 'D' car as house
mending, work, garage construction, kids, wife, etc etc are
leaving less time than was available in my youndger days. Plus, the
days are shorter now.
$5500 cash or swap for one of the above mentioned 'P' cars.
Photos available upon receipt of yours (email or url only).

I have a question about the VIN numbers on the DeLoreans
Most people when they post a message or refer to their car usually post
the
last four or five digits of the VIN number. Since I don't own a DeLorean
(yet) I was wondering if the beginning part part of the VIN number is the
same
to all DeLoreans. If so what would an entire VIN look like.

Subject: DML: parts reference guide
Hello everyone:
I would like to know if there is some sort of master parts catalog,
reference listing etc., available? It would be helpful to use on the
great site service Delorean Motor Company has. I've used it a couple
times and it works great, but I don't know the correct name for the
parts I'm looking for and it apparently needs the correct name. For
example, I was interested in how much new rubber door molding would be.
There are a few little chunks missing out of mine. Well, I put it in the
search and could find nothing. I am sure that stuff is available, it
must be called something besides molding..but I don't know what. And the
search could never find that "little thing-a-ma-jig that's under the
left side of the dash". So, if I had a reference with the correct name,
I'd know what to look for. Tip for those late night net surfers: the
www.usadmc.com parts search is great to tool around in at 1 or 2 a.m.!
Keep up the great work! De Miller. Kansas City
