If all that is wrong with the part is a stripped out bolt hole either
buy a kit to repair it or take it to a shop that can do it for you. It
will be a lot cheaper and faster and once done correctly the repair
will be invisible. This is a pretty standard kind of thing to do when
working on cars especailly with aluminum parts. Of course if the part
is bent or distorted it may be necessary to replace it but that is
very uncommon. The venders cannot list EVERY part that they have
especially the used ones which in this case they may be able to supply
as used. You would be amazed at what they can come up with if you ask,
just don't let the price upset you! This is why I suggest you first
try to repair the part first.

As parts get more and more expensive and scarce you will see more cars
parted out that could potentially be restored. It is a fact-of-life in
the car hobby. The main thing is a legal owner is able to do whatever
he wants to with his car, from using it to burying it to taking it
apart piece by piece. An extreme example is what Dave Stragard bought.
That car was a parts car if there ever was one! In fact there was no
unit completly assembled including the alternater and starter! He
bought it not really knowing if everything was even there. Giving
credit where credit is due he brought it back to life. Sometimes a car
that should have "died" is resurrected and sometimes a car that could
have rebuilt is not. If it bothers someone so much that a car is being
parted out then buy all of the parts and "bring it back to life". Put
your money where your mouth is or let others do as they please. You
will quickly learn the economics of car repair and sales. No one
should be offended by these remarks because no matter what you think
of Deloreans they are just cars and that's how they are valued in this
world. Parts cars serve a valuable purpose to the car hobby. In many
cases it is only through parts cars that "die" others may "live". To
bring back a basket case could use up many parts that could keep other
cars going longer.

My car 6530 sat at PJ Grady's for 5 years. As he said and I totally agreed, it had too many miles to economically fix and sell for a reasonable profit, BUT it was too good to part out. That is where I came in. It was perfect for me. A car with a great body but one that needed alot of TLC and upgrading. Finally I found a car I could afford and that I thought was worth the price. Thank you Rob Grady! 6530 lives again! (and if it gets a bit warmer here in NY I'll be able start doing some of the work) and thanks to all of you who have helped me in the past and who I'm sure I can count on in the future.

Here is where I am in getting my D. back on the road. Any comments or
suggestions are most welcome!
1) D. sits for 1 year
2)Take D into shop to get waterpump installed, fluids, belts and window
motor and drop $1000.
3) Go to start D. and it won't turn over. Mechanic gives it a shot of ether
and it starts. I have never had to give the D a shot of ether to get her
going.
4) Drive D around town to charge battery and return to the house.
5) After having been in the house for 10-15 minutes go back out to the D. to
start her up planning to return to Fairfax, Va from my family home in Front
Royal and the D. won't start. I try the ether -- also a no go.
Any clue?

The bad news is one of those sold yesterday on eBay for $32...
Did you end up using a helicoil on your water pump bolt? If not,
here's another great opportunity to put one in. And it's a whole lot
easier to access! (personally I'd drill it off the car). As before,
you may end up converting to SAE. Be gentle -- cast aluminum is almost
too easy to drill and tap.

Subject: CIS Fuel System
Does anyone have any ideas on how to measure the fuel comsumption of
a DeLorean in such a way that it can be used in a miles per gallon
calculation? I have seen something called a CIS air flow
potentiometer on the CIS system for an Audi that is used for their
trip computer but 'our" CIS system does not have that. Is there
another way to compute fuel flow. Could I use the info from the
frequency valve and RPM? I may put some magnets on the drive shaft
and have a sensor read the speed of the car. Is speed information
available from the automatic transmission computer?

Does anyone in the Chicagoland area know what ever happened to the 82
DeLorean that was at a repair shop in Geneva a few years back. All this talk
about DeLoreans that had been sitting for years reminded me of that one.
In fact seeing that DeLorean back in 1995 reminded me of how much I wanted
one. This car had sad story to tell. The plates expired in 1988, and the
car had been towed to the shop in Oct of 94. The shop had done a bunch of
work to the car, but the owner never paid the bill. So the car just sat for a
few years. It needed some more fuel system work, interior work and a general
clean up, but it would have been a nice car.
In any case the owner of the car wanted no less then $13K, plus before the
car could be sold the bill at the repair shop also had to be paid. It was
about the same time that I found mine for $5K, mine needed about the same
ammont of work, so I made the better economical choice.
I haven't seen the car there at the shop for a few years, and I wondered if
anyone knew what happened to her? Hopefully that story had a happy ending.

both PJ Grady and DMCJoe have a wide selection of used parts, not to mention that they will certainly have a lead on this part if others don't. i would strongly suggest calling Rob because i'm sure he can help you out. he has been able to supply with out-of-inventory parts in the past!
always check the vendors first even if it's not in a catalog!

The closest thing to a "soul" for a car is the Title which of course
includes the vin #. There have been cars (not Deloreans) that have
been built out of little more them a legal title and a motor. If you
were to ever lose the title through salvage or theft now indeed you
have a "parts car" because it can never be legaly registered so it is
legaly just a collection of parts that happens to look like a car.
This is the reason that there are 83's, the vin #'s and certifacates
of origion where created by DMC before the cars where built so they
where able to assemble the last group with the already asigned vin's.

Why would 37 cars not be on the road if you had not dismantled 3? Were the
parts for those 37 not available at DMCHouston or some other parts source?
I think what the author was trying to say was that the delorean car has a
vin number and frame that is not replaceable and some people would just
strip a car for profit instead of trying to fix it. The cars that you
described that were turned into parts cars do sound like they were serious
but I think there are 2 different ideas being batted around here.
Just my 2 cents.

easter eggs were hidden DVD menus - for example, on the harry potter
DVD, you have to get through a series of puzzles in order to access
the deleted scenes.

I'm going to have to side with Erik on this one.
Like Erik said, these are just cars. It's VERY VERY unlikly that
EVERY wrecked or in-sad-shape DeLorean will find an owner with the
financial means, the desire, and the ability to restore it. Therefore
why not let the car live on equally well in other's cars.
Yes, it's wrong to part out a perfect or near perfect car. But you
know what? It's not your car. People can use thier car for what ever
reason they want to. They bought thiers just like everyone else. No
one is more or less "Entitled" to own a DeLorean. Saying things like
that makes one sound pompus and infatuated with the car.
See Erik, sarcasm can get you in trouble if mistaken.... Believe me I
know. (ha!)

Slow down, take a deep breath, then investigate potential problems one
by one:
First & foremost: is this classic "hot start" problem? (had mechanic
been running engine before you picked up car?). Plug warm up regulator
into cold start valve to force on. If car starts, you need a new fuel
accumulator. Don't forget to swap plugs back.
Step 2's:
Is car getting a spark? On most cars is easy to check simply by
discharging coil wire to block. Our burried distributors kind of rule
that method out, but you can check about as easily with a timing light.
Is fuel reaching cylinders? If my replacement PRV is representative,
fuel injectors just pop in. Cylinder 3 is easy access. Remove
injector, crack air sensor plate open, then energize vehicle (you
don't need to turn all the way to cranking position). Fuel should
spray briefly.
Do you have enough gas in tank? Don't laugh -- original sending units
pitiful. Just unscrew the unit and look into the tank. Before I
replaced mine discovered car would run with less than an inch of gas
in there (wasn't intentional guys. The old sender wasn't reading at
all and I forgot mileage since last fill up. Only realized gravity of
situation when I went around a curve. That's also when I sucked crap
into fuel system...)
Let us know if car fails any of above...

The Delorean that I "saved" when building the 97 Delorean time machine
was a total basket case.
The car had been underwater for 4 months. the engine was shot, so was
the transmission. the interior was totally rotten. and the were 6 rats
nests including damaged wiring from the rats. The fuel system parts in
the gas tank were totally corroded.
The stainless was painted imron black so it had to be totally stripped.
Luckily there were only to dings in the stainless. This basket case
cost $3000.
Needless to say people thought I was a little crazy trying to restore
this car. However, this gave me the opportunity to make the delorean.
Aluminum V8, 4 speed automatic, real full size windows. etc.
I was able to sell the engine and trans for spare parts, also the rear
louver. Otherwise, the rest was garbage. EVERYthing on the car had to
be rebuilt.
Now i have the Delorean that I always wanted. I hot rod that I can
cruise in with the windows fully open.
If I had the time and money I would do it again, so my son can have one.
The think about restoring DeLoreans, (especially with SS frames) will
last virtually forever. No other car can be expected to last this long
without additional periodic restoration. Release that DeLorean can be
the Family heirloom of the Future.
These trashed deloreans are opportunities not to restore the car to
stock, but to make BETTER Deloreans to improve and update it so it will
last forever.

This little orphan was definitely past the point of an
economical return to concours condition, but it was
complete. Because of it's condition, I have no doubt
that 02650 had little chance of ever seeing the road
again and the fact that it was painted, meant it was
even a pretty sad excuse for a parts car. But it still
seemed to have potential. I had some ideas for a
custom D, something I personally haven't seem enough
of, and once the title issue was rectified, the
project began.
I point this out not just as a shameless
self-promotion of my website www.projectdelorean.com,
but to offer an alternative to a standard restoration.
I would never advocate hacking up a car that only
needed some TLC just for the sake of calling it
custom, but keep in mind that just because it wouldn't
be practical to "restore" a particular car, doesn't
mean that there aren't other alternatives
(www.projectdelorean.com), ones that would keep it
alive and get it back on the road again. (And to
Pigeon Forge in 2004!)

I almost hate to bring this up but when the D was parked for 1 year, did it
have gas in the tank?
If so, you may be suffering one of the worst DeLorean calamities known. If
you've been here for any amount of time you've probably seen people talk
about the fuel pump boot. This boot suspends the fuel pump inside the gas
tank. Unfortunately, the rubber used to make this boot is not compatible
with old gas that may have formed varnishes. The boot will soften and then
literally melt into the gas supply. The melted rubber is then sucked into
the fuel system clogging the fuel distributor, the injectors and all the
filters as well as almost every other part that handles the fuel.
Checking the boot is not difficult. Remove your spare tire and the umpteen
phillips screws in the large plastic panel under it. Once that panel is
removed you'll see two round covers on top of the fuel tank. One is plastic
with wires coming out of it, the other looks like rubber with hoses coming
out of it (and two small wires). Remove the large hose clamp holding the
rubber cover in place.
At this point you're about to open the fuel tank. Take every precaution
about working safely with gasoline. The car should be off at this point
and, of course, don't smoke.
Once the large hose clamp is off, you should be able to lift the entire fuel
pump and rubber boot out of the tank and have a look at it. Rub it with
your finger and see if it's very soft and oozing. If so, write back and
we'll help you with the much larger problem you may now have.
Now, if that's NOT it, it could be almost anything. Since the ether isn't
working, it is most likely something related to the spark. Take one of the
spark plugs out and ground the tip of it to something (FAR away from the
ether or any other source of gas) and have someone crank the car. If you
can't see any spark, concentrate on wiring and the coil.
Write back and let us know what you found.

Well if it wont even start with ether that could be a spark problem. I would
check that first. A few years ago a similar problem happened to me, and a
new coil cured the problem. Be sure to check the timing also.
It is also possable that the engine is getting flooded due to a problem in
the fuel system. I had a blockage in the return line that caused mine to
start flooding a few years back.
Just some ideas. Hope this helps.

A few people asked what happened with my water pump bolt bolt;
so here's an update.
I just order a few last-minute parts, including the idle-speed tube's
oring retaining clip, some fuel distributor bolts, waterpump hoses...
and a throttle body.
I've had bad experieced trying to 'fix' threads or broken bolts...
bad luck I guess. So I figure for 40 bucks I'll buy a new one.
As for the water pump's lower bolt. I said "#$%& it," which (though
not literally) was Mr Grady's advice. I figure the two top bolts and
the radiator piping and the throttle spool bracket that bolts to the
top of the therm-housing should hold the pump well enough.
After I receieve my latest volley of parts, and few more hours worth
of reassembly. it's be the moment of truth!!
I found a few people willing to sell me a throttle body... so thanks
to all who offered!

Following up on the assumption that it is an ignition system problem
there are 2 common things to check. Look at the white thing on the
firewall to the left. Make sure all of the connections are on, clean,
and tight. The other common problem is a bad pick-up coil in the
distributer, they seem to go bad when warmed up. Pull a spark plug
wire off and see if there is a spark when cranking.
