I believe that the concept is this ... Ralph Lauren owns a company
that makes clothing, clothing accessories, and fragrances. Not a
thing to do with cars. However, if you say his name fast, and kind
of all at once, it *could* sound a little like "DeLorean". I think
it's as simple as that. The gas station attendant confused the two
names because they sort of sound alike, and then tried to appear
smart ... until he opened his mouth. Those of us who've had a
DeLorean for a while have heard all kinds of bizarre things like
this. Goes with the territory, I guess. And Merry Christmas to you
as well! (Firebomb you? We wouldn't even consider it! Right,
List?)

history of exotic cars (Sorry, I didn't write down the title). One of
the cars mentioned was a gull wing BMW turbo. It was planned and at
least a prototype was built in the early 70's or 80's. Interestingly
enough, it was featured as a "safety car". What is it with gull winged
cars and safety. Has anyone heard about this car?
I haven't heard any mention as to whether anyone has used a teflon
lubrican such as Lubrilon in their car. Has anyone used this and has
it made a difference in care/performance?

We really do need to accumulate all these wonderful
stories and publish them at some time. My most recent
"gas pump" story goes as follows:
In late October I drove from my home in Steamboat
Springs, CO to L.A. in my D. After I filled up at a
gas station in Utah, I went into the convenience store
that was a part of the business. The owner said,
"WOW, where did you get that car?". I gave him the
usual intelligent remark - I bought it! Then, he said,
"I thought they were all confiscated after the drug
bust!!!!"
We coulc perhaps put these stories into short story
form and, borrowing from the movies, entitle it - -
are you ready? - - Duh - Duher - Duhmest.

Mercedes Benz had another Gullwing Safety car called the C1113. The car had a wankel rear mounted rotary engine, with the identical seats and binnacle from the DeLorean prototypes.
The Mercedes was gearing up for production in late 1977 when the second "energy crisis" hit in 1978.
There are only 6-7 of these C1113 known to exist and they all reside in the Mercedes museum in Stuggart Germany.

slick-50 has teflon in it and my friends engine siezed at 84,000 in his old mustang II,
it ran out of oil due to the oil change person didnt tighten my friends drain plug. but
in the commercial for slick-50 they run an engine with out oil in it....Hmmm.
any particles in any oil additive will get trapped in the oil filter.

Shannon, I have used Teflon based oil products in my cars for years. Oil and
manual transmissions. The only problem I had was at the inspection station
when the car had a hard time heating up to pass emissions. The man asked me
if I had Teflon in the car and I said yes. Then he knew why it was harder to
heat up. Follow directions on the can and make your oil a little slicker.

This will quickly turn into a Holy War.... Before you use any of this
stuff do a simple Google web search on keywords "teflon motor oil".
You'll see a ton of information on this, much of it related to
(successful) government FTC fraudulent advertising lawsuits against
the companies marketing these products. Even DuPont has issued many
public statements that they never approved the use of teflon in this
manner.
You'll also see a ton of testimonials, just read carefully about the
level of testing any of them has done.
Do your own research, draw your own conclusions.

Having spent the last 38 years in the automobile manufacturing business I
can assure you that warranty costs are the one thing that eats into profits
faster than any other. If something as quick and easy as adding a Teflon
additive would reduce engine related warranty costs it would have been
applied years ago. Changing oil every 3 to 4,000 miles using good quality
motor oil is the cheapest most reliable way to engine durability.

Due to a job situation (lack of one), I have to sell the DeLorean that I
have been working on. I would rather sell it to someone on the list if
anyone wants it. Best offer over $10k. I am putting it on ebay, however,
if anyone on the list wants it I will remove it from ebay. It is an
automatic, Vin 2418 with new Tank Zilla, everything in the fuel tank
replaced, filter and fuel distributor and injectors. It has 36,906 miles on
it. Binnicle and Dash are perfect. The bad is that the drivers seat has
dry rot, fascias need paint, drivers window motor is dead, however a new one
is included.

Is Mobil one synthetic better than conventional oils?
My BMW's (and other European Cars) have a decal attached under the hood "requesting" the use of Mobil One synthetic.
The BMW dealers use zero 0w/30 oil.

The answer is YES, absolutely. Synthetic oils are better than
conventional oils! They are much more expensive, however. One of the
easiest places to read about oils is valvoline.com. I have been
using Valvoline 5w-40 synthetic in my D for about 4 years now. I
change it every year even with only 2 or 3000 miles on it. It is
clean, less drag and an edge against heat damage. I use synthetic
gear oil in the final drive and Synthetic in the auto trans. The
auto trans is smooth as silk and always looks clean and red.

Yes I have a poster of it with 1972 Munchen BMW museum on it. It was
mentioned
in the Dec edition of road & track.
It had a 1990-cc sohc inline 4- similar to the DSV
200bhp and weighted only 2160lbs
An encircling impact strip and foam sections. Impact absorbing end
sections
with telescoping steel beams.
Also looks likes like a Giugiaro design.
Has anyone seen the new Citroen C Airdream? looks like a modernized
Delorean with no
gullwing doors, yet again done by Giugiaro and ital design.

I work in the lubrication industry and here's the scoop on synthetics:
syntetic oil has been around a very long time, since at least the 30's
(germany made advances in it's development so they could use it in their
tanks to fight russia)
modern synthetics will NOT 'make' a car leak oil. today's mobile 1 has a
very advanced additives package that will not cause this to happen. older
less advanced synthetics did, simply because synthetic oil has a 100%
synthetic base stock - every molecule of oil is exactly same, as opposed to
the cluster fxck of petroleum products in conventional oil. so if you car
used to have slight oil leaks, it would probably leak more because the oil is
just that good - it finds its way out.
the advantages to running mobil 1/other quality synthetics:
1. most people run extended oil drain intervals (though mobil DOES NOT
recommend this, but synthetics WILL hold up a hell of a lot better than
conventional oil IF you forget to change it at 3,000. typically people with
synthetic run is about 5-6K miles. most professionals recommened changing the
oil filter at LEAST at 3K.)
2. pour point depressents allow the oil to flow adequately at tempertures
below -35F
3. oil will not boil off as easily as conv. oil under high heat, and it will
flow to the upper cams and such MUCH faster than regular oil
4. doesn't oxidate like conv. oil which means your oil won't get as dirty as
fast.
5. improves gas milage due to increased lubrication properties (less
friction= increased engine efficiency and lower operating tempertures)
6. as an effect of easier starting, synthetic oil will keep your sensors and
other engine controls operating more effectively by not producing waste
products under sluggish starting and will increase life of the emissions
system.
really the only downsides to synthetics is that (A) you really shouldn't
switch to it on an old car (including DeLoreans) because the engine is
actually 'used' to lower-quality oils by now, and some of the assembly
methods or components used may not be up to current standards which would
allow synthetic oil use, even from the beginning [this is questionable -
maybe someone who has used synthetics for a long time in their D can comment
on this] and (B) their cost (about 3x the amount of conv. oils.
as bruce benson said, the best thing to do for your car is to use a quality
oil and oil filter and replace your oil and filter EVERY 3K miles (which will
open another can of worms, but if you can't afford to do this even just for
the hell of it, you probably can't afford a DeLorean either)
