Im not really sure how I am with flushing and replaceing fluids. Im really new to it all, but Im sure I would be fine doing it. If I have any doubts there are some local owners who have offered their help before, if I ever got a delorean. I also have some friends in the mechanics business that could show, help, or even do it for me if needs be. A big part of buying a delorean(for me) was also a subsequent plan to teach myself how to work on and understand cars in general(at least better than I know now). David, I have figured on changing all the fluids and gas, the brake systems, calipers, clutch, struts on the doors engine and trunk, new window regulators, etc... When looking for the rodent droppings, etc..., Where in particular should I look. unfortunately, I dont think the car was stored on pavement(at least not if it has been sitting in the same place since 96). Its sitting on a little strip of grass just wide enough for a car, that runs along side a driveway and a building. I will check for frame rust in the areas you mentioned. Ill let you all know what I find. Im hoping that the owner just wants to get rid of it, and realizes it needs some work, and will part from it for fairly low $3,000-$6,000 range. In that case I would not mind putting some time and money into it, and not being able to drive it for a bit till I get it all fixed up. But much more than that, Ill just have to wait for a running one to come along. Either way, I think It would be fun to do, and fix it up to a good working order. I think it would have more sentimental value to me that way as well. Also, Id be a bit more familiar working with it for later on if anything else needs work. Any other tips suggestions, etc... feel free to add on. Ill be calling the owners tomorrow, and hopefully going out to take a closer look. Ill keep ya posted. And thanks everyone who has replied or emailed me with help, I appreciate it greatly. Plus it seems you have a "O" (oh) before the one, which should be two ZEROs if the VIN is 1033 or one ZERO if the VIN is 10333. Try again. Sounds like the wheels/tires hitting the sway bar - possibly from non-stock wheels/tires. Check for shiny areas on the sway bar. Particularly pay attention to the trailing arm bolts, TAB's for short. The are at the front end of the rear trailing arms on the rear suspension, one on each side. You need to remove the aluminum covers to see them and make sure they aren't loose, broken, or bent. To get the covers off you have to remove the battery behind the passenger seat and the carpet in the "vault" behind the driver's seat. There used to be 3 nuts in each, some may be missing, broken. Be careful about the shims, they must be replaced as they are, that is count the # and make sure it stays the same unless you have a 4 wheel alignment, in which case the tech may change some to adjust the THRUST ANGLE. To see if the TAB's are bent just loosen and turn the head with a wrench slowly watching to see if the trailing arm moves up and down. Be sure to retorque to spec. Not a bad idea to just replace them for cheap insurance. While under the car grease the front end, check the fluid level in the trans and final drive, and inspect the boots on the C/V joints. It only has 12.5K miles on it and I have had it garage stored (without being able to start it) since 1986. I had parked it with gas in the tank and hadn't driven it in some time. Apparently the gas had set up and it wouldn't fire. This had happen once before, but I had the original Dealer work on it the 1st time. I want to get it running and back on the road. I know I need to pull the tank, fuel Line, ect... but should I pull the moter and look at replacing gaskets. I know for sure that the clutch cylinder was leaking fluid before. Where should I start? You don't have to actually have to remove the gas tank from the car. I would suggest cleaning out the old fuel and whatever else you find inside the tank. Replace any rotten rubber. Check the oil and coolant and then manually rotate the crankshaft a couple of times. Now with a fresh battery try starting it. After you get it running and up to temperature drain and replace all of the fluids including brake, clutch, transmission, windshield washer fluids. Now replace all of the filters, air, fuel, and oil. If it is running good you could stop here for a while but you should probably do a complete service on the cooling system and a tune-up. Grease the car and inspect the udercarriage. Replace the tires if questionable. Spend many hours cleaning and detailing. Spend many more and $$$ fixing all of the little things that don't work right and MAYBE you're done! If the clutch was leaking just replace the master and slave cylinders and upgrade to the braided line if it hasn't been done yet. I'm sure if you live close to someone on the DML that they would be able to lend a hand in person or on the phone. If the fuel has been in the tank for over 15 years, you will need to drain the tank and probably replace at least a few fuel system parts. As far as the clutch system, rebuilt clutch master and slave may be needed and you should replace the plastic tube clutch line as well. Brakes will need to be inspected and bleed the entire fluid system to insure all the old fluid and any contaminents are removed. After it is running, don't go too far on the original tires. Refer to the Tech Page section on the DMCNEWS website under the Inspection heading to make sure to hit everything on the check list. http://www.dmcnews.com/Techsection/inspection.htm If you are located in the Midwest, I would not mind giving you a hand looking the car over. If you have a heated garage, even better. Good luck getting your D back on the road.
