To me the only car that was once a DMC that is no longer a DMC was the Coyote from Hardcastle and McCormick. Yes it still had a DeLorean interior and drivetrain, but the rest of the car was the Coyote. In any case I would have to say that every car has a soul, espicially a DeLorean. In fact sometimes I think mine hates me lol : ) Best wishes, Andrew 4194 ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 2 Date: Sat, 07 Dec 2002 05:15:38 -0000 From: "James LaLonde <deloreandmcxii@xxxxxxxxxx>" <deloreandmcxii@xxxxxxxxxx> Subject: FatBoy7 and more DeLorean Soul, etc... Have we ever had trouble with this negative youngman before? Seems I recognize his name. He's been awfully rude to me via private email regarding my 'soul' post. I guess the topic isn't for everyone - but some of you got a kick out of it, huh? Anyways sorry for cluttering the list with a topic some of us may think is dumb. To each their own - I say!!! On a more on-topic note: I have yet to get that damned bolt out of my engine. I picked up 8 gazillion forms of bolt-extractors... and a right angle drill adapter. If THAT doesn't work I'll be awaiting the reply to a rescent inquiry regarding removal of the rear fascia. Oh joy. Happying DMCing James L vin004009 [Moderator Note: Vewteran DMLers may recognize the FatBoy name, but since it's just an anonymous email address we have no sure way of verifying whether or not this person has posted to the DML in the past. Feel free to answer Mr. LaLonde's technical question, but don't bother to speculate about FatBoy - moderator Mike Substelny] ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 3 Date: Sat, 07 Dec 2002 09:20:20 -0000 From: "George DeLorean <phantomoftheopera_gk@xxxxxxxxx>" <phantomoftheopera_gk@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: Entire underbody and frame Hey all. Just thought that I would let you all know that there is an entire fibreglass underbody and frame up for sale on e-bay for $500. What if I kept welding patches onto my rusting cab (well, bad example for the D, but you get my point), and then replaced my damaged VIN plate with an exact replica? (I'm sure it is the number that matters, not the metal in the plate) This conundrum is, of course, well-trodden ground. Philosophers refer to it as the riddle of the Ship of Theseus: Is it the same ship that returns to port after being away so long that each and every one of its planks, nails, sails, ropes, etc has been refitted? And what if a new ship is made out of those discarded parts? Surely they can't *both* be the same ship... And so it goes. What is the identity of a wave on the ocean? It's component "parts" (the atoms of water) are constantly changing and are mostly irrelevant to the identity of the wave as such. It seems to be the continuity of *pattern* that matters, not the pieces. So, I guess that as long as your particular collection of scraps of stainless steel and plastic traces a continuous path back to Dunmurry, you're OK. So, I'll tell you what. If someone volunteers, I'll help with the following experiment: Start replacing the parts of your D, one by one. I'll hide behind your garage and pick up all the discarded parts from the dumpster and put them back together. When we're done, you'll still have your car, and I will too... Merry Christmas Erik, you get your wish. - moderator Mike Substelny] Get rid of your brain, and you really aren't the same person anymore right? Take the tags off your car and you don't know what VIN it is. Most of us call our cars by their VIN number. Just like people call me "Erik Geerdink" or "Dumb Ass" so I call my car "4512" and "Money Pit". So my birth certificate says who I am. And my finger prints prove it. The title on your car says who it is, and the vin tags prove it. So maybe it doesn't lye in the car, but in the paper telling it who it is, and the tags proveing it. We can't compair a car to a human, so we can't assume that they share the same properties. People have a soul that can not be seen. That doesn't mean a Delorean has a soul that can not be seen. If I put my brain in John Deloreans head, I would still be erik, but just have a different body. If you take your vin tags and put them on a different car, it would still be your car, but just a different body. Now, absolutely none of this makes sense. Why? because cars don't have souls. and so to define the soul of a car is impossible and confusing when you even try. But, I would say the identity of a car lies in two places. The tags and the title. Gosh I hope this thread ends. Erik --- In dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "treehouse2000us" <treehouse2000us@xxxx> wrote: > I have no idea how to spell that word! As I recall #4009 was to be purchased in Missouri. Did you trailer her or drive under her own power (apparently DeLorean souls are female). You can't just jump to the middle of a new story without telling us how it began...
