Just by chance I happened to watch the first Episode of a New TV show
titled "A Car Is Reborn". It aired on Discovery Home Channel In that
episode the host of the show is at a british car show and happened to
Interview Simon Lees-Milne asking him if he could sit In one of
Simons Ferrari's A blue (Dino). Simon Said, it was the only known car
in the UK Sorry NO Delorean Stuff appeared in the Show.

I have two semi-functioning Delorean mirror switches that I would like to see if I can swap for one which is fully functional. One I have is my "new" one, but only moves the mirrors up and down, not side to side. My other "original" one broke its mirror selector switch and is likely missing some piece that fell out of it.

No no no, I didn't pay that much no way "but I have the receipts." I
just bought the car less than a week ago and the guy fell out of love
with the car after having to fork that kind of cash over. It was for
the drive train, suspension and a few other minor things. I have the
papers and I can scan them in to show you guys and get your opinion
on all the work... for all I know there forged with delorean one
headings, who knows. Frankly I don't care if this guy forked over all
the tea in china to get the thing repaired after he blew a head
gasket. All I know is I have a great car that I love and don't mind
the "minor" classic car upkeep I am having to do.

There is no way in the world an engine rebuild should have cost that
much, but if it did and you are having problems, the first place you
need to be asking questions from is DeLorean One. And after spending
that much, I would hope they would tell you how to adjust your
shifter for free. If not, you need to seriously reconsider your
choice of repair shops.

New Guidelines would be a whole new can of worms to open.
I agree that the moderators have a difficult and often thankless job,
but I think there would be even more problems if posting was based
on credentials. Trying to figure out who has what "valid" or higher
level of credentials would be a difficult or impossible line to walk.
Case in point, the example of the underwater corrosion topic. While
I do not have a Chemical Engineering degree, I do have 15 years of
hands on experience with salt water filtration of 2 million plus
gallons of "man made" salt water, in a closed loop system. There
are many chemical processes that go on in salt water that will effect
metal corrosion, including salinity level, temperature, pressure,
movement (or lack of motion) nitrites, nitrates, bacterial load,
barnacles, coral, sponges, algae and all other sorts of sea life.
Bottom line - 304 stainless does not hold up well in salt water when
compared to 316 stainless (and so on), learned from experience.
The body dies were not constructed with any stainless grade metals,
primarily since it would be cheaper to make it stronger without it.
5 years machine shop experience tells me that any die has a limited
life span and many things will effect the lifespan besides use.
The body panel dies were used in a 12 ton press and they worked well
when the dies were used, stored and handled properly.
Although it is my belief that the body panel dies would not be of
much use, if recovered, I would not mind being a part of a search
and documentation expedition, just out of curiostity. If someone
or some group in the UK (or anywhere else) will organize such an
expedition, I will donate the use of my underwater camera system
to help in the search and documentation phase and will help with
any authorized advanced phase (such as recovering one or more dies).
I am a certified diver with nearly 20 years experience of underwater
construction and maintenance, both in free water and confined areas,
including extended periods of underwater work while inverted.
I guess if I'm ready to do this, that makes me certifiable.

Pump does not engage until engine is running certain number of RPM's
(anyone know what it is?). Safety feature I guess. That's why the
accumulator is so important -- until your car starts it's the only gas
available. One of my long term goals is to rig up a momentary switch
under the dash to jump Brown (hot) to White/Purple (line out) on the
fuel pump relay for the eventual day my own accumulator dies.
BTW: fuel pump relay isn't in the two banks w/ headlights etc. Is last
relay under metal plate adjacent to wheel well (closest to engine
compartment).
The Buzzing Thingy in the engine compartment is probably your idle
speed motor (on driver's side intake rail). I don't have a Lamda valve
(passenger valve cover) so don't know what it sounds like, but Martin
G likens to an angry cricket.
Does car run without jumping pump (after started), or do we need to
trouble shoot your RPM relay? Don't have my factory manual with me,
but I seem to remember tachometer runs from relay (anybody?) -- if so,
should be quick visual diagnosis from dash.

What do the carbureted re-engines use for a fuel pump? I'd think stock
75 psi would blow a needle valve clean out. Just a syphon in the tank?
If so, what did you use to seal the gaping hole?

Chris, When you turn the key on does the fuel pump run for a second and shut
off. Then when you try to start the car does the RPM relay contacts close. If
they don't then the pulse coil area may be the place to look. The RPM relay
won't turn on unless it sees a pulse from the pulse coil in the ignition
distributor. Then the relay inside the RPM relay will close and there goes
power to the pump.
Intertial switch connections also give trouble on the ground circuit side.

I was getting low voltage at the fuel pump a while back. I also discovered
that the wires to the fuel pump were getting warm and the insalation was
cracking as the wires got closer to the plug. To make a long story short I
cut and spliced in new wires which solved this problem.

When you remove and replace relays and fuses you must also make
certain that the connectors that these parts plug into are fully
inserted into the fuse block so when you stick the relay or fuse in it
will make electrical contact with all of the connectors. There have
been many instances where a wire fell back and did not make contact
making you think the relay or fuse was bad when in fact a wire wasn't
making contact. Also if overheated the connectors lose there
"springiness" and also "blacken up" from oxidation. If you have any
doubts about a connector remove and replace it to avoid a bad
connection and a melt-down of your fuse block. The best reference to
follow is the electrical diaghram in your Workshop Manual. Follow the
power from the battery through the switches, fuses, and relays. Go
step by step from the battery to the pump testing each connection and
wire.

You must understand that you are working on a 20+ year old car that
has probably seen several owners and at least that many mechanics. The
particular problem you have is unusual but it is not unusual to find
old work that you must go over and fix properly. These types of things
happen because not all mechanics are knowledgeable about Deloreans and
also a tempteation to "repair" things without having to order parts.
If you are patient and fix these problems as you find them eventually
you will have a good, solid, reliable car. Hopefully if you did your
homework when you bought the car and inspected it thourghly you won't
have any major, expensive surprises. As you use the car more problems
will come to the surface so if you keep up with them and fix them as
you discover them you will get all of the "gremlins" out and be very
happy with the car after that. The downside is that now that you have
seen a sample of the "workmanship" of a previous mechanic you have to
hope that he didn't fix much else! You are finding out there is no
such thing as a cheap Delorean (or any old car for that matter). You
can pay me now or you can pay me later Ha Ha.

Subject: Tracking Origin
I want to find the origin of my Delorean. I want to know what day it rolled out of the plant, how long it sat on the docks, how long it sat in Quality Assurance Center's, what dealer it went to first?
Does anyone know where I can find this type of information? The car had to have left a paper trail as it went along, but where are those papers?

I think it would be useful to the history of DMC if we brought these up.
Even if they were not usable in production, I am sure they would have
museum value, not to mention, you would have the specs for new dies at your
fingertips without the R& D. Maybe they can be rebuildable? I think it is
at least worth looking into.

I dont own a DeLorean yet, but I would be more than happy to send a
$100 check to get a dive to retrieve the dies. Someone said they
were made of stainless, and someone did a simulation test of
stainless in salt water which flied with flying colors. Where do I
send the check?

The dies are destroyed beyond any use I am certain of this.The dies for mloding or deforming metal are extremely dependant upon the precision milled surfaces of the dies.After even a short period underwater say a month or two the dies would be rendered useless.The tiny pits on the metal would make the dies junk and I dont think this could be corrected by any means.

Before anyone goes jumping into the water you might want to find out
what the legal ownership status of the dies is. Even if they are
recoverable and can be used you may have no right to touch them.
Pictures would be great if you did dive and at least located and
mapped them. To actually use them would require renting press time
(EXPENSIVE!!!) as the presses to use them are BIG. It would also
require purchesing tons of stainless steel sheets (you aren't going to
make just 1 or 2 of these things) space to store all of these parts
after you make them, transportation, scrappage, cost of money etc. To
actually make new parts you are in the hundreds of thousands of
dollars range if not millions. I do not think it would be an
economically viable enterprise even if you could get the dies for
free. There are other ways to duplicate stainless steel panels if you
don't need large #'s made.

I love all of the letters....I would say MOST of them, that always say, "I
read somewhere", or "someone told me"' or, "it is in a past DML but I can't
find it", or " my mechanic told me, so it must be true".
With all the emphasis lately on diving for the D dies, I wondered if anyone
gave a thought to the actual ownership of them!! Seems like everyone
thinks they can just dive down and hook onto someone elses property and
bring it up. Thats called theft. In the first place, who needs them with
the huge supply of parts still available. That site you gave was great and
I THINK I saw it before somewhere, but I can't remember where.
The biggest whoppers are gas mileage and top speed stories. I wouldn't
believe my grandmother or my own pastor re gas mileage. Who can prove
anything. You probably wouldn't believe that I get 60 MPG around town on
my D and 85 on the highway. Ho Ho. First liar doesn't have a chance.
But you moderators do a good job. I wouldn't want your job at all even
with the high salary!!!
