Eric,
It might just be something with our cars. I thought I had a brake problem
and had everything swapped/checked, even installed a new master cyliner...
but the brake pedal still gets pushed way down. My new thought was to
install the braided brake lines. I haven't done it yet (they are still
sittin in the garage) but hopefully they will help. 20 year old rubber
lines might be a little old. Hope this helps.

Tom,

Lemme try to explain this the best way I know possible. I'm gonna tell
you a story. In 1997 I bought a "factory painted" Delorean, hehe. Well, I
fell for it, I paid more than I should have for "one of the only five factory
painted Deloreans". It was supposed to be a "prototype experiment". I have
done extensive (exhaustive) research on the subject and come to the one and
only truth in this matter. THERE ARE and NEVER WERE ANY PAINTED DELOREANS
FROM THE FACTORY. Lemme tell you about my car. It's an '82, RED, and it looks
awesome. The paint job is like none other I have ever seen. The door jambs
are painted, the gaps are painted, under surface parts are painted. Here's
the other thing that made me believe the man's story, the titles go back Red
all the way to the original dealership. Also,,,the man who sold me the car
was the chair of the now defunct Appalachian chapter of the DOA mentioned in
many old D World's. So I believed him. Well I have done research upon
research, and I have talked to people who worked at the factory, looked at
all the figures, and read all the books. No cars left Ireland painted. I have
found out that my car was painted at the original dealership. I had to do a
long paper trail hunt to find the original dealer people in Houston. Ok, so
as the way I understand it, this car you are talking about is an 83, in 83
for the most part the company was in receivership. It wasn't churning out
prototypes, it was selling old stock to repay debts. There wasn't much R&D
going on if you follow. Lastly, don't be fooled by great paint jobs, the car
was designed to have the exterior disassembled practically with a wrench and
a screw driver, providing excellent opportunity to paint it.
My advice, if you like the painted car, buy it, unless it was painted
b/c it was wrecked (look for tale tell signs). Don't pay more for it however.
You can tell this man with authority that his car isn't factory painted, and
if he wants he can email me. I have a friend that just bought a beautiful
black 81. It looks great, and as I have learned it is great fun to stick out
amongst a group of cars that stick out.

Group, By the Bosch catalog. The AL156X is rated 100 amps and was made for
the 260 and 760 Volvo. It's a warehouse item only and that the last catagory
before going obslete. Bosch never made a true bolt on replacement fopr the
DeLorean. If they did they would have listed it in the catalogs. The AL156X
would have to be modified to work on the car and then the warranty would be
voided.
If you want a true bolt on replacement, check out the D110, 110 amp, the
D140, 140 amp and the D150, 150 amp. fom Special T Auto.com.
They are all brand new alternators with all Delco compatiable compoents and
are available most everywhere. They also have a 3 year warranty against
defects.

I purposely didn't convert it to DIVX, because it can confuse some
people when they have to get the codec, etc.....

This way it works no matter what...just larger.

Being the file is mpeg1, I guess you havent tried running divx on it.
I'm downloading it now and will try compressing it down (should compress

quite a bit being the video is only 20 minutes long). I was compressing
20 minutes episodes to ~125mb.

Subject: [DML] Car audio question..

Today I installed my new Alpine radio. I'll spare everyone the details,
but the install went very well, due to lots of preparation and DML
research. But I have a problem.

The radio basically works OK - all functions work - power antenna,
proper illumination, no sparks or shorts, and everything else in the car
still works fine. This radio has a built in 27 watt RMS/60 watt peak x
4 channel amp, which is powered by a direct connection to the battery
(positive and ground).

Here's the problem: The sound is good upto volume level 14 or 15 (I
know the numbers are meaningless, but it's just a point of reference).
That level is a good, normal level for listening to most things and
still carry a conversation with someone. As soon as I turn it up past
that point, I get
increasing amounts of loud static. It's not the speakers clipping, or
a
clipping sound at all, the best I can do is describe it as loud static.
I'm also pretty sure it the amount of static is proportional to the
amount of bass in the music and/or the bass setting on the radio.

Here's what I think the problem may be, but I'd like some professional
(or at least knowledgeable) opinions. The Delorean wiring harness for
the Craig radio share a common (-) lead between the front and rear
speakers for each side. (Right common and left common), plus four (+)
leads for each speaker
(6 total leads). Of course, the new radio has separate + and - leads
for
each speaker (eight total leads). I combined the each of the two (-)
leads for the left and right sides to match up to the harness (8 leads
to 6 leads). Is it likely that the combining of these two sets of two
leads from the radio is causing the amplifier to cause this static?
Should I go back in and just wire the speakers directly to the radio
leads?

Besides this one problem, the radio sounds great - no hiss or hum or
engine interference, etc.

Thanks,

-Hank #1619

Samuel.....you don't have to pay $32K to get a good daily driver DeLorean. I paid < 20K for a really nice one and I've been driving it daily for 7 months now with no major problems. The secret is 1) to find one someone has taken good care of and 2) one that's been driven regularly. Don't let high mileage deter you. Mine had 72K on it when I bought it. Become familiar with all the fixes and mods and make sure they've been done. Look at what the owner has done to the car in the last year. Ask to see the maintanence receipts. Has he invested in the car? Does he fix things as soon as they break? In short, you want to find a car someone has pampered and drives regularly.

Good Luck.

Bill

You are right on the money about using older cars for regular
transportation.

I have been doing it all my life. In fact, my newest car is a 81 Delorean.

My family regularly drives cars from the 70s as daily drivers. ( I have
even be accused by my neighbors as being fixated on the 70s!)

I install or retrofit all my old cars with all the power accessories of
newer cars, including ps,pdb, pw, pwdl, pseats, ac, etc. With all this
power, newer cars have offer no improvement in creature comforts.

Another positive point about these cars is that they are easy and cheap
to fix. No computer diagnosis. Restoring these cars also means you are
recycling and saving the environment.

As for mileage, you can retro fit a 4 speed automatic for under $2000.
I did this in one car already.

Each of these cars has been debugged and restored as necessary. I can
spend $2000/year on each car and still be ahead. This is far cheaper
than buying a new car. You can see these at
www.geocities.com/bobandgailscars/

75 olds 88 350 dual stage air bag equipped

Try running a temporary ground wire from a well known good ground to
the unit. A deep toned "roar" in direct relation to volume can be
caused by grounding problems. If this corrects, remember you're
dealing with a plastic car -- you'll need to trace the ground circuit
well past the dash.

You may well have fluid squishing past piston(s -- haven't examined
mine yet, anybody know if DMC has 2) in the master cylinder. On my
domestic vehicles this has always been the weak link, overwhelmingly
more so than calipers.

Quick way to check -- cap off brake lines at master cylinder (honest
to goodness threaded inserts, not plastic or rubber plugs) and
activate pedal. If it moves, you need a new master cylinder.

My guess is that at one time someone replaced the speedo cable. Speedo
cables are wound in a direction. If the are then used, turning in the
wrong direction, they will unwind. This is why it is always best to
try to get your parts from one of the Delorean venders.Yes you can
always go to a local shop and they can make up a speedo cable for you
but you have a 50/50 chance of this happening to you. The Delorean
venders know what it takes to get you parts that will work having a
long experience working exclusivly on Deloreans. That "cheap" part you
buy localy can get expensive when it goes bad and you have to get what
you need from a Delorean vender anyway.

Run two wires (try 12 ga) temporaraly (power and ground) from the
radio to the battery. If the problem goes away the wiring to the radio

Good post overall, but I gotta disagree with this one. The optional factory
luggage rack works fine for the rear tire. I luckily haven't had to use
mine for that yet, but I did test it in my garage to see how it works.

The luggage rack stows neatly out of sight in the trunk when not in use.
They are still available from the vendors, although a bit expensive. Still,
I feel that they are a good investment, especially if you take road trips
in your car.

To me this seems like a lot nicer setup than a bracket on the hood,
although everyone will have their own ideas about that. :)

Subject: Re: Daily Driver DeLorean

From my experiences with my DeLorean, I just can't reccomend buying a D as a daily driver. For the first 6 months to a year (or more) you should keep another car as a daily driver, until you can get your D into shape. I thought I had bought a DeLo that could be used as reliable transportation, as mine came with receipts. Lots of them. $12,000 in fact, and all of this was spent over the past 3 years... so the parts and work were new. After dropping a good $3000-$4000 in less than six months, and having to be towed no less than 3 separate times... I'm a pretty good testament to why you should keep other cars around, LOL (I'm sooo glad I kept my pontiac now, haha!).

My D can't go more than 2 or 3 weeks without something new popping up that needs attention. Yes mine made it on a 12 hour round trip with Bill Robertson recently, but on that trip I also burnt up a radiator fan, which in turn has caused an electrical gremlin to come out... my cooling fan keeps tripping off (despite my car having a Fan Fix).

But like Bill said, you get to know the car more intimately than you'd ever wish to, lol. Despite my D being a money pit, and a *HUGE* headache, I'm more attached to her than ever :-). I'd personally reccomend a refurbished car from PJ Grady or DMC Houston (if you've got the means, go for it). Bob mentioned that you can find a good driver for under $20k... which can be done. But he was fortunate enough to buy one of the nicest DeLoreans in the country, from one of the most fickle owners ever, LOL! More money was put into that car than it would take to buy a refurbished one. I don't think Bob can know how lucky he was to grab Rob Starlings old car :-).

So to wrap things up... don't buy a car without many thousands of dollars in upgrades (although even this doesn't guarantee a good car!), or one that isn't driven at least a couple thousand miles a year. DO keep a daily driver, lots of patience, and have lots of cash leftover for the fixes your car WILL require! Welcome to DeLorean ownership! :-D

It's probably your power brakes. Remove the Master Cylinder(you can leave the brake lines on to avoid having to bleed the system), and you'll see a push rod, you can rotate the bolt on the end to bring it out some. It won't require much, and too much will result in your brakes dragging (IE constantly engaged). If you just replaced the Master Cyl you'll probably have to tighten this up for a bit... then drive for a few weeks, then back it down. I don't know why that is but it's what Rob Grady told me, and it work on mine.Make sure your brake fluid is filled, but not too filled, it caused my brakes to engage slowly as the car warmed up!-James La Londe1981 Delorean DMC-12 vin#001697 LicPlate DMC XII1998 Kawasaki Vulcan 8001992 Ford Probe GT--- On Fri 09/20, Chris D'Urso < dursman@xxxxxxxxxxx > wrote:From: Chris D'Urso [mailto: dursman@xxxxxxxxxxx]To: dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 04:10:01 +0000Subject: Re: [DML] Brake Pedal TravelEric,It might just be something with our cars. Is there a list of delorean parts that are out of stock from the major
vendors that have the remaining inventory. We know that the door
handles were gone and replacement ones were made. I also remember last
year that a replacement dash was to be reproduced so i assume that no
more are left. I'm sure the vendors know what is gone or very low.

Hi Hank,

the "new" generation of radios (not much older than 15...20 years) need two
separate wires
for each speaker. There is no way to have up to 50W on a speaker with this
old technique that radios used more than 20 years ago. I don't wanna bother
you with electronical details, but just connect the speakers to the radio
like the radio's manufacturer writes it in the manual, and you will have the
sound you paid for.

Betreff: [DML] Car audio question..

Today I installed my new Alpine radio. I'll spare everyone the details, but
the install went very well, due to lots of preparation and DML research.
But I have a problem.

The radio basically works OK - all functions work - power antenna, proper
illumination, no sparks or shorts, and everything else in the car still
works fine. This radio has a built in 27 watt RMS/60 watt peak x 4 channel
amp, which is powered by a direct connection to the battery (positive and
ground).

Here's the problem: The sound is good upto volume level 14 or 15 (I know
the numbers are meaningless, but it's just a point of reference). That
level is a good, normal level for listening to most things and still carry a
conversation with someone. As soon as I turn it up past that point, I get
increasing amounts of loud static. It's not the speakers clipping, or a
clipping sound at all, the best I can do is describe it as loud static. I'm
also pretty sure it the amount of static is proportional to the amount of
bass in the music and/or the bass setting on the radio.

Here's what I think the problem may be, but I'd like some professional (or
at least knowledgeable) opinions. The Delorean wiring harness for the Craig
radio share a common (-) lead between the front and rear speakers for each
side. (Right common and left common), plus four (+) leads for each speaker
(6 total leads). Of course, the new radio has separate + and - leads for
each speaker (eight total leads). I combined the each of the two (-) leads
for the left and right sides to match up to the harness (8 leads to 6
leads). Is it likely that the combining of these two sets of two leads from
the radio is causing the amplifier to cause this static? Should I go back
in and just wire the speakers directly to the radio leads?

Besides this one problem, the radio sounds great - no hiss or hum or engine
interference, etc.

Thanks,

-Hank #1619

Subject: A/C Panel light bulbs...

I searched the DML archives looking for a cross-reference for the A/C panel
lights, and as suggested in a post several years ago, I tried my local VW
dealer. They did not have the part in stock, but had record of it. They
said it has a standard bulb number - 3898 - which I was then able to easily
find online at pelicanparts.com (See the photo here:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/images/lamps/3898.jpg). I know Grady
sells the same bulbs for $1.99 each, but if you're looking for the bulb
locally, the bulb number "3898" might come in handy.

BTW, I fixed my radio static problem by separately wiring the (-) leads to
each speaker, and bypassing the existing harness which combines the left and
right (-) speaker connections. Thanks to the folks who responded.

Subject: Re: RE: Bosch alternator swap

If you want a true readily available alternator then hop on down to
your auto parts store and pick up a Delco alternator. You will need
to make two small modifications to the Delorean. One you will be
splicing a new "pigtail" harness to the Delorean harness and IMHO
it's alot better then the one the Delorean one has now. The second
is you will need to make a modification to the mounting bracket that
is bolted to the passenger side Head of the engine. After doing this
you'll never need to worry about your alternator going. If it goes
just head down to your auto shop, plop the old on the counter, get a
replacement and install it the very same day. If you get the other
bolt on alternators then when it goes you'll be removing it..sending
it out to be rebuilt and waiting a few days to get it back...that
would suck if you were out of town. If you're interested I have full
instructions with pictures and the model number of the alternator
available. Email me privately and I'll send all the info.

I figure I would post this here first before I put it on Ebay. I
have am '81 gas flap hood that I am selling. Now this hood will be
perfect for the person that owns or is thinking of painting their
Delorean. The hood has about 24 tiny little holes in it. The
previous owner of the hood thought hid Delorean would look great
with a hood scoop <sigh>. Anyway...that's the only problem with the
hood. There are no dents or dings in it and the fiberglass backing
is in perfect condition....not cracked. Like I said it has tiny
holes in the top of the hood so either you can A. put another hood
scoop on it, B. fill it and paint it or C. If you're good at welding
Stainless steel or know someone who is you can attempt to weld the
holes. I am asking for $350 for the hood...I cannot ship it so you
will have to come pick it up. I live in Long Island NY approx. 35
minutes west of PJ Grady. Email me privately anyone that is
interested. If I get no response by Tuesday I will be placing it on
Ebay. I have pictures for anyone interested.

This probably IS the problem; modern radio's use a so called "bridge"-AMP;
the negative output can get BELOW 0V (negaitve actually) due to some
internal electronic trickery. If you combine the negatives you force them to
work together. BUT when there's a difference in the "negative" outputs fro
fron and back you get a sort of feedback into the amp, causing a lot of
noise.

I'm quite positive that when you disconnect either the front or rear
speakers and put the volume over 15 the noise doesn't occur.
You should correct this mistake as soon as possible; not doing so
can cause damage to the end-stages of your radio!

I've done a couple of DeLorean re-fits now, as well as some other cars
and have allways used "ISO-plugs" on the car; a standardised set of
connectors for both power and speaker leads. Most modern (European)
carradio's have these connectors on them too, which makes putting in
a different radio in some future time A LOT easier.
I've allways put in a separate continous feed, fused at 10AMPs and on
the DeLoreans I used the original wire from the ignition to give the
radio that signal; the actual current draw should be on the continous feed.

It would be best to remove the 9-pin plug and wire the leads as the should
be wired; if you check the manual that came with your radio there will
probably even be a warnig about connecting the ground-leads together!

Good luck, mail me if you need more help,
