We've, ( Marty Maier, Don DeBolt, Dick Ryan, Judy Van Meter and I ) have all
driven DeLoreans at Road America while participating in the Wisconsin Sports
Car rally several times over the last few years. One year we were allowed 5
laps, that's 20 miles, and there was no speed limit. We were allowed passing
on the front straight but had to hold our positions in the other track
areas. Judy and I had fun with an older Porsche 911 and we both actually
beat him to turn one. I drove hard enough to find that after three spirited
laps I ran out of brakes from over heated pads and fluid coming into turn four and almost ended up in the sand. They told us that anyone not following the rules about passing or anyone going off track would cause everyone to be called in and the offender would be turned over to the other drivers while the organizers turned their backs. I had visions of being strung up at the nearest tree had I gone into that sand trap. The brakes came back after a a few miles of cooling down. It was the experiance of a lifetime and I don't belive it's offered anymore. Alex, one of the organizers used to work for Road America and had a good relationship with the owner. The track has changed ownership since then.

As a member of the "Delorean Touring Society" we, as a group of Delorean
owners, have in the past attended an event held by the Wisconsin Sports Car
Club. They used to hold a 4 day event every year called the Sports Car GT Classic which included road rallies and fun runs and track events all over Wisconsin. This event was always done at the same time as the June Sprint races held at Road America, and one part of this Sports Car Club event was the opportunity to get in a half hour of track time at Road America on the Saturday the races are being held. And at this event we had NO track speed limits. We could go as hard and as fast as we, or the car, would allow. Like you said, the
Delorean definitely could use more power and better brakes to do this type of
driving, but all in all it is a very good car and held it's own very well
with other cars in it's class. Road America is a beautiful place and driving
a Delorean around this 4 mile road course is one heck of an experience.
Matter of fact, the Wisconsin Sports Car Club web site and club brochures
used a photo of our 5 Deloreans coming up the main straight at Road America
as one of their main advertising pictures for quite a few years. I think this
was from 1996 or 97.

I have purchased from John and SpecialTAuto. He is quick to respond to e-mail requests and has shown me a good amount of friendliness and willingness to work with me on questions and on getting me parts. I have yet to install the water pump I got from SpecialT, but I have a warranty in case anything goes wrong so I'm not worried. I plan on ordering from him again soon.
I think you'll find that all the vendors are great. Sure, not everyone is going to have a great experience all the time, but so far, the majority of the time I've found all the vendors I have contacted to be excellent. Personally, I've found that the smaller guys have offered somewhat better service, but that is understandable given the fact that they apparently deal with fewer orders. Just do what I believe most DeLorean owners do--spread your business around to them all. And as long as they all treat you well and give you good deals, go back to them again.

Your explanation of the problem is very comprehensive. I see only one
detail that you haven't mentioned, so maybe you forgot to do it. You must
bench bleed the master cylinder before you install it on the car. Bench
bleed kits are available at most auto parts stores and are cheap &
disposable. I'm surprised that the vendors don't include them. It
basically consists of clear vinyl tubes that loop the outputs back to the
reservoir. I held my master cylinder in a large bench vice and pumped the
cylinder using a large phillips screwdriver until all the air was cleared
out. It is not unlike weight training -- especially if you let the
reservoir run dry while you are bleeding it in the car (twice!) like I did.
Then you have to start all over again. It is really a two person job.
If you are using an opaque rubber hose, try using a piece of clear vinyl
tubing so that you can see what is coming out of the bleed screw.
There is also a possibility that both master cylinders are defective. The
same guy could have made the same mistake on a whole batch. I've had this
happen with starters on a GM car. By the time I discovered that my 3rd
replacement starter was defective, I was seriously wondering what I could
have been overlooking.

Well, we all know that John Hervey is going to be paying real close
attention to this thread. :-)
I have bought several things from John and consider him a good friend. I've
seen him at shows and have several friends in common with him. He's a nice
reasonable guy who is out to make an honest buck at something that he enjoys
doing. He tends to have a style of heavy-duty brute force while sometimes
neglecting fine detail. This sometimes causes problems, but he will do
whatever he can to fix something if you bring it to his attention.

Mike,
There is a manufacturer in Spain who has made SS louvers. I have been an
e-mail pen pal with the guy for quite some time. I've never seen one of
these in person, but have been told quite a lot about them by the maker.
Being made of metal, these are quite a lot heavier than the originals and
require stronger struts. There were many complicating factors that stopped
them from continuing to make them:
1) they are expensive to begin with.
2) they are very heavy and of course big making them awkward and expensive
to ship.
3) there are import taxes and fees that can also be excessive.
There have been around 15 shipped to the US, but I have yet to see one at
any of the shows. I think that all of them were powdercoated black, so you
won't recognize one at a casual glance.
They still have the patterns/forms/jigs, etc to make more, so if you are
willing to pay the price, I'm sure they will be glad to make a one-off for
you.

I have bought parts from everyone....including SpecialTAuto, run by John
Hervey, and they are very helpful and he offers lower prices on common items.
He also has come up with many Delorean improvements. I have also called John
several times for advice and he has spoken to my mechanic during some
repairs. He is always very nice on the phone to talk with despite my endlesss
questions. You will also see him reply to many questions on the list. I
highly recommend them and the other vendors too.

Having a longer body will allow the strut to extend further by the same amount. Letting
the door rise further (and with that leverage 5mm would make a considerable difference)
is a great idea IMO, except maybe for shorter people :-)

I've had no problems purchasing parts from SpecialTAuto, and have found
them to be of excellent quality. I picked up one of the 150 Amp Alternators,
and installed it into my car. Everything was shipped promptly, and came with
VERY detailed instructions for both installation, and operation. I had more
difficulty removing the old alternator, than I did installing the new one.
Common parts that you would order with certain specialty items are priced
about the same if not less than other vendors, so my bulk order for the
alternator, & drive belts was very cheap considering the prices paid, and the
higher power alternator ordered.
Over all, I do tend to buy the majority of parts from those vendors that also
have service centers. But for the smaller items that you'll find, I get them thru
the those vendors who mainly specialize in parts only. The replacement
pulley bearings I picked up from SpecialTAuto were only $4.95 ea, when
other vendors have them for about $23 ea. I also broke an antenna mast. The
price for an entire unit was over $180. But since I didn't need a new unit, I was
able to pick up a replacement mast from Darryl Tinnerstet @ Specialty
Automotive in Washington for only $40. So, for alot of the odds & ends
needed for you car, they can be had at a decent price, and you can still feel
good because you can buy them from a DeLorean vendor! No matter where
you go for parts, it never hurts to shop around!

I'm no huge expert but my car's calipers were jammed when it arrived. I COULD move the
calipers but only by pumping the pedal hard and in rapid succession. I suggest you try
this yourself (this is with the bleed nipple closed). Once the pots were out, I put a
little bit of lubricating oil around the pots and levered them back in. They've worked
fine ever since.
I suggest with the new parts/seals etc, the pots may be a little "dry".
You should ask James Russel-Grant about the magic tool he created to sort his brakes out.
I believe he welded a drilled-out bleed nipple to a tyre valve, and using a foot pump,
was able to pop the calipers open, lube them up and reassemble. www.dmc12.co.uk

Many of my cars upgraded electrical parts have come from SpecialTAuto (relays, fan fixes, 150amp alternator, etc etc). You can't find a friendlier guy than John Hervey either. I got to meet him last at last years SEDOC meet. As an example- when my voltage regulator went out recently, John told me to ship the alternator down to him, and he'd replace the part free of cost. He didn't have to do this, as the voltage regulator isn't included under his alternators warranties. As far as the other vendors, I've spoken with them all and ordered things from them all. I've found nothing but very kind, eager to help you folks.

No, but I know that the Interior Trim Company in Belfast is happy to recreate replacement
leather covers. I have had my seats done by them and the improvement is immense (they are
now better than origianl seats). See this document below. The black seats are mine, the
grey ones are Paul Salsbury's. The binnacle is also mine. I had my knee-pads recovered
too. The dash and console comes next.

The wire you are referring to actually is Whithe w/ Slate stripe,
it comes from the ICU and is used for the Tach, the RPM relay and
triggering the ignition coil. If you did an engine swap, you
probably removed the original ICU, so the signal is non existent...
Even if you left it in, it won't generate any signal if you don't
have a proper pickup coil hooked up. The original engine has this
in the distributor and runs straight to the ICU over a shielded cable.
You COULD try hooking the wire to the input side of the ignition coil,
(opposite the resistors) but I will not take responsibility for this.
The signal wouldn't do you much good anyway, since it triggers from a V8.
I guess you would get the RPM-relay functional, but your tach would read
too high, as you get 4 pulses per rotation of the engine, while a V6 only
gives 3 pulses per rotation. You might put in a signal divider, giving
3 pulses for every 4 it gets, but I wouldn't know how to do that.
The trigger you need is to ground by the way.

I have the setup working as we speak; the BC338 actually has to put
up with LESS load than the original, since the new relay has higher
resistance, so at the same voltage it allows less current to pass.
The tranny is capable of switching up to 800mA with cooling,
originally it had to cope with 200mA, now only 150mA, so the internal
heat dissipation has gone from 140mW to 105mW, while it COULD stand
upto 800mW, but would need a cooling body then...
Just to be sure I won't get stranded because of some miscalculation
I did I made a jumper wire that I can plug in when my relay decides
to go on strike anyway, but I don't think I will need it...
And if it does its WAY easier to put in a jumper behind the seat
than it is under the trunk (where the previous owner installed a "Hot
After Ign.II wire", making the pump run whenever I had the ignition on.

My Opinion:
Too much emphasis is placed on the competition in the show, and then a ton more time is spent giving out awards.
I for one attend Ken's show because it is always sure to be a good time.
All of the competition is silly especially for "modified" cars because each one is so unique and which one is "better" is a matter of opinion... For example, the 350 Chevy conversion that won was a VERY cool car (heck, I'd love to have that!) and the owner was a real nice guy BUT if I were to judge the cars based SOLELY on the engine conversion, I'd go with the Northstar setup. That conversion was more sensible, and I just liked the overall streetable look of it over the flashy 350 conversion. The 350 did also have a cool audio system, and a number of other modifications so I assume this had something to do with the results.
Based on how I THINK the judges work, it's possible the 350 Chevy beat the NorthStar because the license plate lights on the NorthStar may have been dirty. Who knows?? I'd like to know!
These competitions usually boil down to who has the most time and money to put in to their car, or who was lucky enough to buy a perfect car to begin with. What's so great about that?
Unfortunately for me, I think I am in the minority (so speak up if you agree with me!!).
If the current judging method is to continue, the criteria for each category should be communicated to everyone in advance. Especially on modified cars, how is a modification judged? (How expensive? How hard to do? How well it looks? Quality of work? Sensibility of modification?) What method will be used to quantify the judging criteria? Most of it is all personal opinion.
Any my biggest complaint about any car show is there is usually no opportunity to see the cars AFTER the awards are given. It would be great if the awards were given out at the show, and the winners displayed their trophies with the car for an hour or so. This way everyone can see the winning CAR, and not jut the owner's face.
How I would like to see it done for Modified cars:
All modified cars still go in to one category, "modified".
Set up some categories of modifications for awards.
Best engine conversion
Best PRV modification
Best modified wheels
Best entertainment system
Best painted
Best drastic appearance change (Convertible, Time Machine, Curtis, ...)
and so on....
These awards will be selected by PEOPLE'S CHOICE. That means, a given car could possibly win multiple awards if it has been modified in multiple ways. It is a bigger compliment for DeLorean owners to give the "thumbs up" to your modifications than a bunch of car judges who made sure you cleaned the road dirt out of the holes in the frame!
If you also want the judges to go over all of the modified cars to score them on the standard stuff (cleanliness, completeness, and such) that's fine too. It's just not my thing.

My door DOES need a bit of alignment, but this is something
I do not trust myself on doing. As I am the only one driving
my car and I know this I can guide it so it closes properly,
untill I find the time and someone capable and willing to
to the alignments properly.
What I'm most afraid of is that if I'm informed correctly
the T-bars have to be unwound for doing this alignment and
the current setting is perfect except for the misalignment.

I witness first hand this "Delorean Envy" almost daily. My boss drives a
Vette and when we have both cars at work people literally flock to my
Delorean and it drives him crazy! He's always calling my car the Tin Can or
Stainless gas grill but we all know its pure and simple jealousy and I LOVE
