Too bad the guy you talked to at minichamps was not helpful. You
would think they have a database that he could at least check and
tell you what retailer got what number range you were asking about.
That way he's helping make the sale - sounds like he will go far in

I bought my car almost 2 years ago with 17.7k miles. That's considered a low
mileage car since it was less than 1k a year.
My sole intention has been to drive it as much as possible! It doesn't
matter to me that the mileage creeps up almost a 100 miles a week. I drive
her every day because she is beautiful and fun (even when I can't get over
50, which is most commutes). In fact, I would think about moving further
away from work so that I could drive a little more every day. (If my wife
reads that I am done for... she wants a bigger house!).
To paraphrase Nike, Just Drive It! If it's eating you up to not drive it,
then go drive it. It's better for the car and it will be better for you!

second, third or even fourth try! As a result my car now has about
10,200 miles on it.
After some careful consideration, I decided recently that if I were
going to purchase a new Delorean, I would not be as concerned as to
weather the car had 4,000, 10,000 or 15,000 miles as long as it had
all of the necessary maintenance to make it road worthy. I have seen
more low mileage cars, including mine that have had significant
problems than higher mileage cars.
I would prefer the mileage to be low enough that the car did not
suffer from wear in the obvious areas. If the seats, interior and
outside condition was maintained and it still looked new, then
anything less than 20,000 miles to me is still low mileage.
I have decided to drive mine, enjoy it and maintain it. Naturally,
since I do own several other cars, I shall try to keep the mileage at
a reasonable level. In my case, 1,500 miles per year would more than
reasonable, would demonstrate that the car is being exercised, kept
in running condition and would allow for significant enjoyment. With
the above formula applied to your car, you would have over ten years
of enjoyment before arriving at the 20,000 mile mark!

Hello everyone,
I was wondering out of curiosity. How many people got loans for
their d's how many paid straight up, saved up. Which do you think is
better. I am dieing to get my own Delorean, and I am getting to the
point where I dont want to wait until I have it all saved up. which
do you all think is more fulfilling, to have it all payed off when
you get it. Or to work to get it all payed off and have it as a
reminder to continue working hard. I hope you guys know what I
mean. I would love to hear what you all think. I search delorean on
ebay every couple of days to see if there is one I cant pass up, and
Ive had to fend myself off from bidding on almost every one Ive seen.

I cannot thank everyone evough for your knowledge, help, and input. While not an owner just yet, I learned quite a bit about the car from reading the letters. I have found a few owners in the Savannah area, where I live, and learned even more. Once again, thank you.
Now the question. I need to know if this is the right car for my needs. I know that my transmition's days on my '91 Corolla are numbered and within a few years, I will need a new car, or at least another one. Seeing that "D's" are much more accesable than I thought as well as parts and service stations, I have designated this as being my next car. However, someone warned me that using any "D" as a full replacement for everyday transportation is a bad idea. I have thought about saving and buying one refurbished from DMC Houston for some piece of mind. I would like to drive the car without fear of being stranded and having something break when it feels like it, saving myself the agravation of having to buy the parts and service time with old things that just decide to break (I'll take the common problems suck as locks, fans, door struts, speedo angle drives and the such in stride). It seems to me that if one has it serviced on its recomended scedual, (requiring a little more than the average Toyota) things should be fine. Most of the problems I hear about seem to be from neglect.
Am I preparing myself for disapointment, or is this not a bad idea? I usually do put a little more than 10,000 miles on a car a year because of the road trips. Any opinions, insight, facts I may have missed, or even $0.02 comments are apreciated. Once again, thank you all so much for the knowledge and advice.

Since I was running the show I have nothing at this point but I know it was recorded. I am sure we can get you a copy. Right now I am beat and I do mean beat.
Kathryn is great and yes she broke down and cried about half way through and even James had tears in his eyes. I put together the tribute for you and when you come next time I plan to expand it to cover more. The people really appreciate what you have done and accomplished.
It went great and was much much much larger than I expected. Almost lost if a few times but it all came together. The show itself on Saturday was great as well. 103 cars total and we had a final head count for all the days of 432 people beating Cleveland by 72 people.

I need to start looking for new tires for our DMC, because we want to keep
the NCTs for any future car shows or something like that. I was reading
through the message archive about new tires, and I read most messages about
tires saying the Pirelli P600s were very good. I also read the P6000s were
good for the front with P600s in the rear.
Are these the best tires for the DMC? I want good, sticky handling, and I
wouldn't mind a good ride. I would want a more performance biased tire,
though. Also, is there anything special that needs to be done to the wheels
when being balanced? I think I read about something different.

Mike -- Your list of things you're ready to "take in stride" is a good one.
ANY car is likely to give you SOME problems, and with your idea of providing
regular maintenance for your D, your problems should be no worse than those
with other cars. I have had a D as my daily driver (although I don't use it
much; I work from home) since I bought it new in 1983 ('82 model). You have
hit on several of the recurring problems -- speedometer angle drive; struts;
etc. -- and for most of these pesky things, there ARE readily available (if
not cheap!) replacements. Just for the record, I gave up on replacing the
angle drive years ago after going through three. As luck would have it, my
state (VA) does NOT require a working speedo for inspection.
But there is no other car that will give you the pleasure of driving a true
classic, while backing in the oohs and aahs of friends and neighbors. Good
luck! Not that you'll need it ALL the time, but occasionally ... as with any
car!

Thanks to all the vendors for your support. I heard of some great
stories on the trip out. Hope you will all share them. I got to Dallas on
my own and met up with John and Bill Yersky (sp.) They own the Cleveland
concours winner. What a beautiful car! John and Bill lost the alternator
belt somewhere in Arkansas but they managed to arrive just in time for
Thursday night's dinner. Even after the overheat and the long trip they
still placed quite high in their class.
The competition was intense. I entered the Best Modified Custom and
much to my dismay I had to compete against DanRC30. For those of you who
don't know, Dan has taught me most of what I know about DeLoreans and he is
the one who figured out the spacing and offset for my wheels. Rob Grady did
a phenomenal job on my car and the digital dash install is amazing. It
looks factory. Even Kathryn DeLorean said her dad would love it!
After 1600 miles getting there the car was pretty filthy. This
being my first competition, I was kind of clueless on how to prep the car.
I asked Jim Reeve to help me and he went with me to the car wash to hose off
and degrease the engine. Then he went to work on my louvres and detailed my
engine compartment. I have to post pictures. He did an amazing job! The
car looked so sweet for competition. He did a lot more work to mine then he
did to his own and he still took 1st place in his mileage category! That
says a lot about his character. TIMMAY!!!! LllllrabbllllraBBLLLLROW!
I want to thank all the above people. Because of you I took 1st
place in the class. I really appreciate it. It was a terrific experience I
won't forget.
The ride home was fun. My co-pilot was Ryan McCaffrey, VP of the
AZ-D club. Having Ryan M. for the ride back was great. If you haven't met
him, check out www.az-d.org. Come to one of our events sometime. He's a
great guy. We had a lot of fun talking about all the DML folks we finally
met. Lots of great people.
Playing cat to our mouse were Ryan and Dianne Gould from Thousand
Oaks, CA. We made the trip to Phoenix in two days, stopping for 8 hours of
rest in Abilene, TX. Having another car with us made the trip more
enjoyable and it is true: two DeLoreans can go faster than one....:)
I also want to mention Don and Nancy Steiger. I ended up losing my
otterstat driving into the competition. TIMMAY was helping diagnose the
problem and he narrowed it down quickly. Don heard about my dilemma and
brought one over to me that he had with him. That was a really cool
gesture. Thanks Don and Nancy!

I bought my Delorean a few months back. I looked at cars with both low and high mileage. I wound up buying a car with 70,000 miles on it vs. a low mileage one. The reason: reliability. I bought the car to drive. The first time I drove one, I couldn't get the grin off my face. I understand the need to pamper your favorite machine, but one thing I've learned in 20 years maintaining vehicles (cars and airplanes) is the ones that are operated regularly are in the best shape. Personally I wouldn't worry about mileage under about 125,000 if the car has been well maintained. BTW, the way to get a deal on a Delorean (or any vehicle for that matter) is find one someone else has restored it to your liking. You'll pay a lot less than if you do all the upgrades/mods, etc.

When you do a bit of digging for more information on the car such as
this, you may just be a bit surprised. There are quite a few people
to my understanding that use their cars as daily drivers. Myself
included. To take this a step farther, the DeLorean was my only car
for over 2 years. I only purchased a beater truck because I needed to
haul some items around that my DeLorean simply couldn't as a car. The
truck sits in my driveway, and I hardly drive it!
As far as reliability, I don't consider the DeLorean any less
reliable than any other car on the road. Perhaps moreso because of
the extra care and maintenance that goes into my car. But this is
true of any vehicle. If you want ultimate peice of mind, then yes, a
refurbished DeLorean is the way to go. I've had problems in the past
with my own car. But none of them were nessisary. Proper maintenance
would have prevented all of them (aside from my own mistake of taking
someone else's word that the parts had already be repaired). So as a
car, the DeLorean is a solid one. I trust my 21 year old DeLorean WAY
more than I would any brand-new, off the lot Ford Focus! So in the
end, it just depends upon wheather you want to restore a car
yourself, or if you would prefer to have a refurbished one that has
already been gone thru. Confident piece of mind, or Proud
restoration?
Now, the question you asked before was if the DeLorean suited your
needs. Well, only you can really answer that one. What do you
consider your "needs" are? If you "need" to own a fun car, that's the
first requirement that you've already met! :-)

Injectors is only one possibility. Check compression, spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor.
