I've thought a lot about this. After all, the Xenarcs come with 16 gauge
wire running to each ballast which seems pretty light. But in contrast,
each ballast is switched on with its own Bosch-style 30A relay. They are
also fused at 20A each. According to the manual, nominal current draw is
3.5A each, but start up current is 15.0A. So once the lights are on and
warmed up, current draw is not a problem, but my concern is at initial
startup. I'm worried that switching both ballasts through one relay would
be too much after several 'on' cycles. Considering that and the similar
mistake that DeLorean made in the radiator fan circuit, I don't want to
repeat their error with the headlights. I'm planning on wiring it pretty
close to the way Sylvania suggests. Only I would rather put the relays in
the relay compartment instead of in the front of the car. For now it looks
like I'm going to run two new power leads (one for each ballast) up to the
front of the main wiring harness. Then I'll put a plug/socket which will
continue the run to each ballast. The grounds would be taken off of the
common spot inside the left wheel.
But before I do this, I'm going to make you some convex mirrors! I promise
:-)

You have 2 options. Order 2 rebuild kits and replace the seals in both
rear calipers or send the 1 out to a "D" vender and have it rebuilt.
The first choice is cheapest if you know how to do it but you probably
should just send both out for rebuild. The piston came out too far and
the seal must be reseated but because of the age it isn't a good idea
to try to reseat it. The best thing you can do would be to do ALL 4
calipers and flush the system competely with Castrol GTLMA DOT 4.
Inspect all of the hoses too. You don't want to skimp on the BRAKING
SYSTEM!!!!! Steering and brakes are probably the 2 most important
systems on the car. Failure of either will cause property damage,
injury and possibly death!!!!

Subject: AZ Club Event w/ DMC Houston -- Report
On behalf of everyone in the Arizona DeLorean Club, I just wanted to
publicly thank DeLorean Motor Company of Houston, and specifically Stephen
Wynne, James Espey and Bill Morgan for spending their Saturday morning with
us this past weekend. About a dozen members of our group met up with DMC at
the annual Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction in Scottsdale, which is one
of, if not the largest car auction in the world. DMC was there as a vendor
with their Carcoon storage units, and to show off their product they used a
motorcycle and (of course) two refurbished DeLoreans, complete with PRV-Plus
engine upgrades, performance suspension kits, HID headlight kits, machined
wheels, and even one of their newest products—heated seats!
The morning began with breakfast and a Q&A session with Mr. Wynne at the
Monterra Restaurant located on the auction grounds. The club was also shown
some info cards which DMC had printed up featuring a beautiful shot of an ’
82 DeLorean on the front and a list of commonly asked questions and their
answers on the back. These are being printed up in bulk quantities as we
speak, so clubs can contact DMC for information on ordering them for shows
and such.
After the Q&A we went into the auction and went over the DeLorean that was
in the auction this year. It was a very clean, early ’81 with gray wheels
and a wide black side stripe and only 3,600 miles. Stephen estimated it
would go for about $18,000 or so, just because “DeLoreans never do well in
auctions.” A bidding war broke out, however, and the car went for $27,000!
The whole club cheered, and we then returned to the DMC Carcoon display,
where they also had Sunstar and BTTF Sunstar models for sale in addition to
the Carcoons.
It was a great day for our club and we can’t thanks DMC Houston enough for
spending their time with us. I’ll try to upload a few pictures to the Files
section of Yahoo soon.

The weather is supposed to be just what I ordered! We are having a
January thaw and this weekend it is going to be in the 50's and
sunny!!! The plans now are for most of us to meet at the show between
around 6:00PM and 8:00PM Saturday evening by the BTTF Delorean (Not
the Penthouse Pet!!! or the Batmobile. Around 8:45-9:00 we will head
out to the restaurant and Bob and Gail will give us a presentation
about the BTTF car during dinner. Don't forget to print out the
discount coupon for the show and save $2 pp. Directions are also there
but if you need directions to the restaurant E-mail me offlist. So far
about 20 people have said they made plans to come.

I have a chirp in my front left wheel. It only happens when I'm turning
to the right (almost always when on a curved highway entrance or exit
ramp). Don from DMC Garden Grove tells me that this is a warped rotor that
is hitting the brake pad every time it comes around. I confirmed this by
touching the brake pedal juuust slightly when I heard it next, and it
stopped right away.
I've also had a "clicking" from the rear wheel. It turned out that I
didn't have the little springy paperclip looking thing on the rear brakes.
It keeps pressure on the pins so pads don't rattle.
Give either of those a shot.

I had a similar rattling noise coming from my rear brakes that was a
challenge for me to diagnose. Since then I rebuilt my brakes and learned a
lot in the process. Here's what was happening: The rear brake rotors were
slightly warped (which I understand now is kind of normal and something to
just put up with) and as a high spot would rotate past the brake pad it
would tend to grab it, pick it up, and then drop it in a repeated cycle as
the wheel would turn. A slight pressure on the brake pedal would interrupt
this. The fix (which I learned from Rob Grady) is to add some springs (one
for each pad for a total of four springs for the rear brakes). The spring
is kind of hard to describe -- they start with a straight piece of spring
wire, bend a hook shape in the middle that holds onto the brake pad with the
two ends of the wire bending outwards and holding onto the two pins that
hold the pads in place. This provides enough friction/stability to stop
slight warps in the rotor from rattling the pads. They call these
"anti-rattle" springs.
In your case with hearing squeaks instead of rattles, maybe your problem is
similar but manifesting itself as a squeak. As a diagnostic, try driving
while applying the hand brake. If you still hear the noise, then you can
eliminate the parking brake pads as the source of the noise. How I
diagnosed mine was I put the car on jack stands, took the wheels off, spun
the rotors by hand until I could see what was going on.
Well, I went off on a tangent. If it's none of the above, then maybe you
have a bad wheel bearing.

I had a similar thing on my car. I let it go for a few months and it
gradually worsened. Turned out to be a CV joint... its in the shop now in
fact getting repaired. My mechanic wants to put a new joint on and replace
all my old boots with Audi boots. The 16 hex bolts would all be replacd by
alan head bolts to fit the boots properly. Anyone heard of this? What do you
think I should do?
Anway, you should have a relable mechanic take a look at your car soon!
I also had a loose TA bolt which was causing some clunking and possible
other noises as well.

My D. is now in need of MAJOR work on the engine and cooling system and to
top it all off, somebody stole my radio, which I can not understand for the
life of me. The display was dead, the cassette had a tape stuck in it and
you had to guess what station you were on or wait until they said their call
letters... Maybe the jerk who stole it did me a favor of sorts... He
certainly got a REAL useful piece of equipment... But now I have a problem
with the dash as well. The two plastic "connection pieces" which I assume
get the cool air to the vents are off, the plastic vents are broken and I
have NO clue what radio to replace it with? CD or cassette? Does anybody
have a recommendation on a mechanic to use and a radio to replace my
original??? BTW, I am a young guy who likes to listen to a wide variety of
music, thus I do like my music somewhat loud at times, especially when
trying to reach 88 mph....

You were given inaccurate information. Spray adhesive's such as 3M General
Trim Adhesive are specifically formulated for attaching foam backed
materials to headliner backing cores. Foam backed materials are very
susceptible to glue "soak through". Properly applied spray allows
professional results with no soak through problems. This is the process that
was used by the factory.

Subject: The Upcoming ETDOC Event, March 9-10 in the Smokies
Hey Group-
Just reminding everyone again of the next ETDOC meet in the Smoky Mountains. March 9-10 will be the next event. It is a repeat of the first event in a way since we are doing the same driving tour that everyone enjoyed the last time. If you don't know what it is, it is on the 11 mile stretch known as The Dragon. It is supposedly the curviest road in the US per length with over 311 curves. The road is a true test of you and your car's driving abilities.
Lodging is at the Park Vista Resort Hotel. www.parkvista.com will provide contact numbers. When calling, mention you are with the East Tennessee DeLorean Owners Club and you will receive the rate of $82, normally over $100 for the same room any other time.
Something I am working on, but is not set in stone, is a chance for anyone interested to get their DeLorean Dyno Tested. This will be in Knoxville on the 9th in early afternoon. All those that attend the Dyno Tests will then caravan up to the mountains to join up with the rest of the group. I will be talking with the owner of the company that will be performing the tests to see about getting a group rate for a bunch of DeLoreans.
If anyone has any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call or write. I have already received a good response from people that plan on attending. Some return members and some new ones that have just purchased their cars (you know who you are, Louie!) Anyone that has attended an ETDOC event knows that we will have a blast!
