Well, I got pulled over once for going too slow. Yes, that's right, I said,
too slow. I had just turned the corner off of a main highway and onto a
residential street; and my house just being appox. 3 blocks away. The cop
had been following for a little while on the highway, and proceeded to
follow. So, I had just turned the corner and he put his flashers on.
He got out of his car and walked up to the D. I rolled down my little
window, and he told me that I should just open the door instead. Once my
door was open, he was a little shocked... as my mother was sitting in the
passenger seat. I guess he wasn't able to see her when he was driving. The
funny thing was, my mom knew this cop, as he had visited my parents home
when it got broken in too, many years ago. Of course, the cop didn't
remember her. So, she spoke up and said, how you doing Joe, or whatever his
name was. This completely threw the guy off guard. I asked him what I had
done, and he responded that I was going to slow. I said that I had just
turned the corner and was now in a residential area, and had no choice but
to slow down. He agreed, and said that in the future, to keep in mind of
the proper speed limits, or something like that. With that, he walked off,
but not without having a few more looks at the car.
So there it is, the story of the DeLorean going to slow, and being pulled
over by a cop for it. Beat that one folks!

Dear Adam,
My experience with the insurance company that I had my D
insurred with was a lot like yours. When the agent was asked what the
value of the car was, the answer was they didn't know, but it was in
the same class as the Corvette. They won't pay you what it would cost
to replace your vehicle with a similiar one. They will look at it as
a 20 year old car. You will have to prove to them what the current
price for a car like yours (condition) would cost. You may want to
get a written appraisal by someone who will be accepted as an expert
and keep that just in case.
If your D isn't your daily driver, you should look into
an "Agreed Value Insurrance" with a carrier Like Haggerty.
I use to pay $1500 per year for full coverage with the same
deductable, but this is NJ, just outside New York City.
I hope that you never have to find out what your carrier values
your car at.

Let me start by saying how much your thoughts are appreciated. In fact I
would like some more comments because they help me work through the process.
The main reason I am considering engine removal is to simplify access to
the various bolts. Let’s face it, there have been numerous posts recently
about bolts breaking. Also working over the sides and rear of the car to
get to these bolts will make it more complex. I'm really not looking for
extra work here (but really appreciate Dave Swingle's logic below) just want
it right and realize my reach limitations.
Now the weird part. I know I have several jobs to do on the engine. While
recently replacing my cooling system hoses, I noticed a couple of damaged
areas on the frame. If I can see this... what can't I see. So now I am
throwing separation of the frame and body on the pile too. I have read it
is a simple task (4 hours if you know what you are doing) and this would not
only allow me to inspect the frame but to replace some other items (i.e.
bellows on the steering) AND give me excellent access to the engine and
transmission.
So now I have 2 new questions:
1) Does anyone know of an existing documented process (text and/or pictures)
to separate the frame and body (sorry, I didn't see the process described in
the manuals)?
2) If I do this, does the AC system stay intact or do I need to have it
evacuated before I start?
A final note/opinion:
The main reason I asked for your insight is because frankly the manuals
confuse me and (based on some feedback I have received directly) leave some
helpful information out. In addition, I feel they are not meant for an
"untrained" (shade tree, intermediate, non-Delorean certified, etc... how
ever you refer to a part time) mechanics since they tend to assume you know
what some processes/item/terminology is or means.
As an example Page C:12:01 of the workshop manual - Water pump removal:
The first step is to "remove intake manifold". Well my manual says there is
an Inlet Air Manifold on page C:13:01 But I guess my vehicle did not come
with a "intake manifold" because I haven't seen it mentioned yet (could have
overlooked something though).
As another example page H:06:01 (Replace Rack and Pinion Assembly) states to
remove "pinch bolt" in step four. Can't find a pinch bolt in my parts
manual though.
So I go to the people that love the car for my answers. And I can’t thank
you enough.

This is not true. Their pensions are protected by a
federal law, the 'Employee Retirement Income Security Act'
of 1974, acronym ERISA. Every Enron employee WILL receive
their vested PENSION benefits. What many have lost is the
value of Enron stock held in their 401(K) plans. This is a
retirement savings program, totally separate from pension
benefits.
The news media has trumpeted over & over that employees
have lost their pensions, and many uninformed folks have
sadly parroted those inaccuracies. Let me repeat - IT IS NOT
TRUE THAT ENRON EMPLOYEES HAVE LOST THEIR PENSIONS!

i was wondering what was the best year delorean produced the dmc-12
1981, 1982 or 1983? i heard the very first ones of the
assembly line had door fitting problems and the most were made in
1981 and the least in 1983 but is there really a year or vin
number sequence (example.. between vin # 3500 to 6000 for the 1981
years) that is better built or are they really all the same
or was the worst or best built in 1983 because of the factory closing
and the workers were more skilled because they have
assembled more cars by the factory closeing in1983?

Our city sometimes runs checkpoints on Saturday nights on certain streets.
They do this to look for drunk drivers and people driving without licences.
There's no less than fifty cops running these checkpoints.
I had to drive through one once in my DeLorean.
I come to a stop, I open my door, the officer asks for my licence. I showed
it to him, he looks at it and starts glancing around the interior of the
car. Then he asks, is it noisy inside? I told him no. He hands me back my
driver licence and says have a nice day. As I'm driving away and closing my
door at the same time, one of the police officers screams out, Hey Marty!

If you have "ordinary" car insurance and you use your "D" as a daily
driver and it gets damaged the insurance company looks up the value in
the "blue book" or something comparable. For a 20 year old car it
could be as low as $1000. Factor in the deductable and they give you
$500 and THEY GET TO KEEP THE CAR. You must arrange IN ADVANCE with
your carrier as to the value of the car. A small hit on one panel can
total it out. Even worse it could be stolen and you wind up with $500
dollars. This is just another reason why it is difficult to use a "D"
as a daily driver. To use collecter's insurance generally it can't be
used as a daily driver. The time to find out is WAY BEFORE something
happens. In some states you cannot insure a car unless it is
registered and you can't register it unless it is insured. It is
important to know these things especially when it comes to storage and
you take the plates off for the winter. Unknowingly you have
discontinued your insurance TOO. Or you stop using the car and let the
registration lapse. You continue paying your insurance but when you
have a loss and they find out it wasn't registered at the time they
won't pay (It was a condition of the policy). Others in the auto hobby
have found out the hard way so try to learn from other's mistakes. It
makes a really big difference the state you live in too, the rules can
be very different state to state.

Techinicaly you are correct, the losses are to the personal retirement
accounts not the "pensions". To most people's minds they are similar
enough that they use the terms interchangeably. The REAL result is now
these employees will have less to retire on because the stock they
bought and could not sell or trade is worthless. The real injustice is
many of the executives were able to dump their stock before the end
and even made money on it before it tumbled.

This car was in England until recently. It was bought my a suddenly very
wealthy person in Northern Ireland.
It is not in great shape and the new owner is thinking of sending it to the
USA for restoration. I am sure you know it has featured in many magazine
articles and is a "sister" to my Dusty, being a RHD , black manual. Its vin
will be in the range 12172-12185
I am not directly in touch with the owner, its rather difficult to contact
him! He will not respond to letters.

If anyone has photos of the inside of your door with the door panel off,
please forward me copies. Another list member and I are trying to figure
out how to get a heavy duty window regulator to fit properly in his car. We
took my door panel off and compared his with mine, but after close
inspection I'm not happy with how mine is connected either. The tube tends
to pivot like a windshield wiper as the window goes up & down. It also
tends to push on the door skin putting a dent in the center of the door.
I've seen many other DeLoreans with the same dent, so I suppose my window
regulator is installed "properly". But I'd like some other opinions. My
mail box has a 10MB capacity. Or if you have them on the net already, send
me a link.

Sorry to hear about your accident, Aaron. While I am certain that either DMC Houston or PJ
Grady would do excelent work for you, based on the site of the accident I believe that
Bauerle Automotive is closer to you. Dave Bauerle's specialized DeLorean repair and
