I think these COULD make things worse; the powerrating
is the same at 55/60W, but they state the output is 90/100W.
I doubt if only the lightoutput is higher, I suspect they will get
even hotter than the bulbs allready on your car...

The "Wire Transformers" are nice, but I know from experience
that the contacts inside the OEM plug can be removed and
rearranged in the plug.
I happen to know this since over here in Europe it is illegal
to have sealed beams on your car, so I allready had converted
lights on my car when I bought it.
Unfortunately the person that conerted the lights fogot to convert
the plug, so my inner lights and the filaments for high in the outer
ones would glow a bit when I had dipped beams on and the
dipped beams weren't bright enough...
With high beams all would be OK. It's just a matter of switching
the contacts for ground and dipped beam, nothing more...

The price seems OK to me, but if you do this conversion, I would
also do the inner lights, so the glass lenses look the same, else
it would look really stupitd IMHO...

I just searched the backissues at dmcnews.com;
it came up with a 10 ohm resistor. I also found a
warning to wrap it up in electrical tape for insulation...

On my car I have jumpered the relayslot so my panellights
are on, but DIMMED all the time; the idea with the 4 spade
relay is a nice one, but since I ALLWAYS have my lights on,
the effect is the same. Having a jumper instead of a relay
also allowed me to hook up a lightreminder-buzzer,
so I don't forget to switch them off when I turn off the ignition...

On <http://members.home.nl/delorean/relays.jpg>
you can see my setup for this jumper.

Good luck,

Can the wires that connect to the fuel pump produce a spark? I really do
need to know how serious this is since the DeLorean is my daily car. I've
never heard of a DeLorean's gas tank exploding due to gas being trapped
above the fuel pump, so I'm guessing that this is just a case of something
that looks scary.

Thanks in advance.

I need a new auto tran computer and I am wondering about ordering a "new"
one. Are the governors that DMCHouston, D1, etc carry left over from the
80s, or are they newer? If they are newer, hopefully they are improved in
some way? Someone on this message list, a while back, posted that pjgrady
was offering an improved version of the autotranny governor, but I just
called them and they said they never offered such a thing.

Another thing. I was surfing the vendor sites today and noticed that prices
are rising! A refurbished car from Houston used to be 29,500, now its
32,500, the D1 cars now go for 62,500!!! I also priced the auto tranny govs,
Houston wants 450, up from 400, and D1 wants 647 dollars!??!!? Eff!

I have just replaced the Shifter boot on my 5 speed. The new one has the metal frame around the bottom as opposed to the plastic one.

The problem I now have is I have difficulty getting it into reverse, as I can't get the gear stick over to the left enough with out pulling Sharpe into the side of the plate the boot sits in.

Looking in the manual at F:07:01 on gear change tube, It sounds like this simple adjustment, will move the entire shift pattern towards the passenger. Is that all I need to do, as there seems to be plenty of space over that side??

Cheers

Why not give him a call and ask?

You may want to check with Bob "zilla" on the improved auto trans governor.

Also, check the archives.  There are a number of list members that may be able to repair your controller, as well as modify it to be more reliable.

Hi, list:

I taped the "E! True Hollywood Story: John DeLorean" this morning. For
all its re-use of sound bites and other flaws, it's still kinda neat to
see video of JZD and the DMC-12. If anybody would like a copy (NTSC,
either VCD [yeah, I'm a geek] or VHS) let me know.

That was me who posted that.  When I bought mine, Rob offered me two
versions of the computer governor.  One cost a few dollars more (I think it
was around 3 or 4 dollars more, but compared to the total cost of around
$400, it was nickels & dimes.)  I shouldn't say that one version was better
than the other version.  I'm not really sure now what the differences were.
They might have been made by different companies or had slightly different
styles.  That happened more than a year ago, so maybe PJ Grady only has one
version now.

I am curious to know what is different inside the new computers -- if it is
a different design completely or just the original circuit board with better
capacitors.  I didn't want to open mine to find out.  If you repair your
original computer then you will know what you have.  The obvious is to
replace the two capacitors and add some shunting diodes.  But there are
other things that can go wrong, too such as a switch inside that can get
dirty contacts.  If you don't feel up to the job, I know there are people on
the DML who would do it for you.  Or just get one from a vendor like I did.

Hi all

I don't want to be accused of keep flagging my site, This will be the last time, however I have now brought it right up to date on my restoration of #6463.

I even did a brave thing tonight and totalled up all my parts invoices to see what it has cost me so far......ooo err and it was not as much as I thought  :-)

Prices are at the end of the page.

Thanks to every one who has helped me get this far with the restoration, and answering those sometimes trivial questions.

HI,
I installed a trans gov this summer.  Luckily there was one on ebay for
$300 at the time.  But I did talk to someone at PJ Grady and the company who
originally made the govenor is still producing them so they havent been
sitting around for 20 years.  They are not really "Improved" but Grady said
they seem to work better than the originals.  I would say Grady is your best
bet as they are not NOS parts.

good luck

There are a lot of wires runing into the fuel tank. How do you think
the fuel gauge works! It becomes a hazard when there is a spark. The
energy released by the arc causes heat which in the presence of fuel
vapors and the right amount of oxygen wil cause an explosion. Luckly
the conditions to cause this don't happen often. It is a bad idea to
alow fuel to remain in the boot with the pump because it will
deteriorate the boots and cause a gas smell. Also there is the SMALL
chance of ignition. The best thing you can do is just replace the two
boots and probably also the suction hose. While in there inspect the
tank for dirt and water and the baffle for correct placement. Be
careful with the gas. Do not allow it to come in contact with your
skin and if you do wash immediatly. Drain the tank as completely as
you can into an approved container. Modern gasoline is dangerous as
some of the additives go right through the skin and into your liver!
You'll find out when you get older how bad it is for your liver! Wires
themselves do not cause sparks, it's when the conductors touch (the
insulation breaks down) that is the problem.
David Teitelbaum

BTW arcing in a tank is what did in Appollo 11 or at least that's what
they think did it.

Subject: Xenarc HID (was: SUPER WHITE HEADLIGHTS)

I saw the Diamond headlights on eBay a while back and even bid on them.  I
researched the obvious and found that the same guy was auctioning several
batches of these listed for other makes of cars.  I picked out ones for an
old Mustang which coincidently uses the same headlight as the DeLorean.
There was no sense in bidding on the one specifically listed for the
DeLorean because there were too many people running the price up.  I ended
up getting outbid on the Mustang lights at the last minute anyway and am
glad that happened.

I wanted all my headlights to match, so I considered bidding on two sets.
Then one set I would install different bulbs in for my high beams.  Since my
intent was to eventually use HID bulbs for my low beams, I sent the seller
an e-mail asking him if it were possible to get the headlight bodies without
the bulbs and to combine 2 pairs to save on shipping.  After getting no
reply and experiencing much confusion concerning what is street legal, I
bought the real HID Xenarc lights from Sylvania's web site.  Go to
http://www.sylvania.com/ and follow the menu to the automotive lighting
section.  This kit is complete and certified to be street legal.  It
replaces ALL the headlights -- low beams & high beams.  The biggest
complication with hooking them up is that they draw a lot of current as they
warm up.  This is too much for the OEM headlight circuit to handle, so the
instructions say to run a new power feed to the ballasts.  They draw a peak
(per side) of 12.5 amps when starting but draw only 3.5 amps (at 13.5 volts)
when warmed up.  If you do the math, this is 47.25 watts per side.  For the
amount of light output, nothing else can come close.  The way these operate
is that the low beams are HID and stay on even while the incandescent high
beams are on.  If they weren't set up this way, then the HIDs would have to
warm up again every time you went back to your low beams.  Sylvania makes
them to be a matched set and says to only replace with the exact Sylvania
part.  Otherwise the beam pattern may not be street legal.  The HID fixtures
are a sealed unit and probably not meant to be disassembled.  The ballasts
are separate and connect with a high voltage wire.  The high beams are not
sealed beams and have a replaceable bulb.

I have seen enough eyebrowed DeLoreans that I am satisfied that it is not
caused by heat from the lights.  The ones with eyebrows were left in the sun
for too many years.  Besides, the eyebrows form over the high beams which
are used less.  The OEM low beams also have a high beam assist.  If
headlight heat were the cause, this should produce more eyebrow than the
dedicated high beams, and they don't.

Unfortunately, it may be a month before I can find time to install the
Xenarcs.  But I can say that they are top quality.  They come in a cool
black box that hinges open as a display case.  The cardboard even has some
kind of perfume in it.  For the price, it better smell good!  The Sylvania
web site has the installation manual available in PDF format.  When I get it
done, I'll post some photos and give an explanation.

Does anyone know any headlight adjustment procedures other than using one of
those mega dollar alignment fixtures?

I just bought my first DeLorean. It has only 24,000 miles on it. It
has always been garaged and is in excellent condition. However, the
two parking brake cables that connect to the parking brake handle
inside are disconnected. I've fixed this type of problem on other cars
before, but when I started to dig into this problem it looks like I
have to take out the driver's seat to remove the bracket to reconnect
the two cables. IS THIS RIGHT. It seems a bit excessive, but I can't
see any other way to fish the cables back on to that bracket with the
two slotted holes. Also, I am left to wonder why it would have come
off in the first place. The cables and the crimped-on cable ends are
intact, and the bracket holes don't look oversized. Any help would
be appreciated. Thanks...

Eric,
I saw John Hurvey's post about your question. John  has access to rebuilt
distributors and in the event that the supply of good cores become scarce, he
can help you get a functionally equivalent distributor to get you back on the
road. Looks like you've gotten a good deal of valuable information about your
problem. In any case, if at all possible avoid  disassembling your
distributor. Have it rebuilt by a qualified shop only. Once you open it up
move the shims you're in trouble and there is no way that I've found for the
average owner to be able to seal it back up once it comes apart. There is no
gasket separating the upper and lower halves and it seems to use a special
sealant and the stainless steel diaphgram only . Johns web site is at

Subject: Test Track Preservation Project - Calling all DMC owners and enthusiasts!

Hello all,
As you may have heard of, there is a rumour that the current tenants on the site where the old DeLorean factory was are planning to expand their business and eventually destroy the old test track in this process of re-developing the site. For those of you attended Eurofest last May, you will surely agree that if the test track is to disappear then there isn't much left of the birthplace of our DeLoreans...

A good friend of mine Ian Foster (from Northern Ireland, currently living in Hong Kong) has already taken action.
To cut a long story short - you can join us both in writing the Mayor of Belfast and the various comittees which will definitely notice our interest in preserving the Test Track. If no-one writes, then we can't be sorry later. We may not succeed in saving the Test Track, but then at least we have tried! To use Marty's words from Back to the Future - If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!

If I understand Ian correct, we can have our voice heard but we have to act within 6 months! That is the absolute deadline! Time is running fast so start writing today - individuals, DMC Clubs etc.

Me and Ian suggest that the Test Track "should be preserved as part of our history and heritage" of our beloved DeLoreans - in other words, every DeLorean owner and enthusiast  should be proposing that the City of Belfast  should consider preserving the test-track as both an "Industrial Heritage Site," tourist attraction, and public open space/Park.

Ian has already got a polite letter back from the letter he wrote saying that all proposals would be considered.
Imagine the effect when the Mayor's office receives letters from all over the world! Its bound to have some sort of impact, and hopefully a positive one!

The Govt are undertaking a major Study in Belfast at present looking at land use issues, etc ... unfortunately the site is privately owned/leased so difficult for the Council to step on the toes of a big local employer if they did want to redevelop the track! But - we have a chance I'm sure!

I guess if there were enough letters from Individuals and DMC Clubs it may help draw their attention to the issue. The Study will be concluded in about 6 months so write now!

The adress:
F.a.o. Councilor Jim Rogers, The Lord Mayor of Belfast
C/o Members' Room,
City Hall,
Belfast,
BT1 5GS
N.Ireland.

Now, go to the DMC News vault...there you will find a drawing made by Ian - Test Track plan.

Print it, and attach it to your letter. Let's show the world that DeLorean owners CARE!

Best wishes
Mr. Stian Birkeland

Paul - The adjustment that you are referring to is very effective at
shifting the entire pattern over.  After I changed my clutch last
year, (which required removal of all of the shifting linkage), I found
that I had no reverse.  The pattern had been shifted over when I
reinstalled everything without doing any fine adjustments.  I read the
manual, and performed the adjustment.  It allowed me to "fine-tune"
the exact location of the pattern.  Bottom line - go for it.

this simple adjustment, will move the entire shift pattern towards the
passenger. Is that all I need to do, as there seems to be plenty of
space over that side??

Subject: Trailing Arm Bolts - Coming soon

Hello List -

I have received a few inquiries concerning the status of the new TAB's
that were discussed extensively on the list.  I contacted the
manufacture regarding the schedule for completion and shipping of the
order, and he got back to me today.  The estimated shipping date from
the company is February 1st.  The order was placed in the first week
of December, and they spent some time finalizing the engineering
definition drawings, process specification and control sheets, and the
manufacturing planning documentation.  Then, the company began a two
week factory shut-down that happens every year at Christmas time, when
all the required maintenance on the machinery is done, and factory
upgrades are accomplished.  The paperwork was released after they got
back to work, so we will be seeing the bolts in a few weeks.  Thank
you all for your patience.  Giving birth to custom designed and
manufactured bolts is a complex process.

As an aside to this message, I am a bit perplexed about the nearly 30%
of the respondents to the poll who "don't know, and don't care".  In
my mind, this is not the most beneficial attitude to take regarding an
important component that can have serious safety ramifications.  You
will note that, of the cars owned by people who took the time to
respond to the poll, about 1/3 have had some kind of problem, 1/3 have
been free of challenges, and 1/3 don't have a clue.

Adam, Normally the governors can be upgraded with a few new parts. I can add
them and you can try it out.
