The few still having a "bad taste" in their mouths from subscribing to a "new
DeLorean magazine" may be unaware or do not care about the developments or
lack thereof, attendant to the prevailing circumstances then, prior to, and
thereafter.
The presumption is that it has something to do with "droppings", $60 worth,
followed by much probing, garnering "excuses" involving one of the "biggys".
The previous not withstanding, some mitigating facts may shed some light on
overheated presumptions resulting in "bad taste". No excuses are available,
only the facts: The cost of the "new DeLorean magazine" exceeded the amount
collected in membership dues, hence substantial contribution(s) (droppings)
was made by two of the optimistic conspirators, none of which have been
recovered by said optimists.
The COMMENCEMENT ISSUE, 1998 received and published two submissions by two
distinguished contributors, hardly the anticipated stampede of the
disenfranchised.

I bought my DeLorean a short while ago. My girlfriend and I have
taken it
out here and there on the weekends, enjoying the ride and the looks,
smiles,
and questions you always seem to get with this unique car. As most
owners
can understand, the "ego boost" is sort of a rush. And there's a
pride that
comes with slowly learning how the car operates and slowly learning
how to
repair and maintain it yourself. (something of a challenge, I've
learned!)
Well we were just rewarded with the nicest incident this past weekend.
While filling with gas at a local 7-Eleven, I was approached by a
little boy
probably about nine years old.
He was excited about the car - he thought the car was just made for
the
movies, he didn't know it was a real car. I explained to him that it
was,
but they only made them for a short time. You could see his wide eyes
as he
looked at the interior. I asked if he wanted to sit inside. By that
time his
dad walked over and struck up a friendly conversation.
My girlfriend has been carrying around a disposable camera, in case we
wanted to take a cool "car photo" in some neat spot. Before I knew
it she
was taking pictures of this kid behind the wheel of the car, standing
next
to it..etc. He was totally consumed.
Just as we were getting ready to leave, she gave this kid the camera
and told
him he could have it. "Make sure you have your dad develop these for
you.",
my girlfriend said before we left.
In those short 10 minutes we realized that the REAL reward of owning
this
car is sharing it with others.

Ok, before you freak out, and you start pulling the motor, let me offer some
advice. If your D has been sitting for a long time and it didn't smoke
before you stored it,
then your problem most likely would be stuck/sticking piston ring's,
allowing oil into one or more of the cylinders, and burning the oil when
they are fired . Go to a parts store and get 2 bottle's of Marvel mystery
oil. Drain one quart of oil and pour the first bottle into your engine, this
should free the ring's. Then pour the other in the gas tank .It makes a very
good cleaning agent, with a lubricant for the upper part of the motor,
valves, etc, if poured in the fuel tank and burned with the fuel. This stuff
has been around alot longer then we have, and earned it's name with top
mechanics.Also to mention it has cured this problem for me on 2 of my older,
stored, super toy's. You might need to do it twice to free the rings, but a
hek of alot cheaper fix than a engine rebuild. Hope this helps and good

I haven't had time to do anything with my noisy fuel pump, but I did fix my
speedometer. I have never heard of anyone having one malfunction like this.
To make a long story short, the problem turned out to be that the dust
shield (I call it the angle drive hub) was slipping. There was about 1mm
side-to-side play between the dust shield and the hub. Some of that slop is
due to wear. I think that what contributed to this problem was my cutting
the angle drive cable shorter to stop it from jamming in the dust shield.
(I don't recommend this because it frays on the end.) Anyway, now the dust
shield can seat completely into the hub, but there is no longer any
compression in the angle drive cable to push the dust shield against the rim
to allow it to grab. I fixed this by wrapping some duct tape around the
dust shield to make it hold tighter into the hub. I don't like this, but
it's the best thing I could come up with at this point.
And, yes, my angle drive and upper & lower cable are well lubricated. But
still the friction in these parts was enough to let the dust shield slip.
There was another list member who fixed a similar problem on his D (the one
where the angle drive cable is too long). He fixed it by making a hole in
the dust shield rather than cutting the cable. If you are reading this, let
us know if your dust shield starts slipping.

If you are going to worry about rust in the fuel system then you have
more important parts to worry about besides a spring in a hose!!!! The
allowable moisture content of gasoline is very low, it gets into fuel
by being stored in leaky underground tanks, condensation, improper
handling, and on a Delorean by bad seals around the fuel pump. If you
have any doubts that there is water in your fuel, drain the fuel tank
and look inside. Any appreciable quantities will be observable as a
large bubble of water floating around in the bottom. Not only must you
remove it but you must find out how it got in. After cleaning out the
tank replace the fuel filter and on a full tank of gas add a can of
drygas to break-up and disperse any remaining water. Water is VERY BAD
for all of the metal parts of the fuel injection system. If you have
water in the gas the car will sputter, hesitate and in general run
crummy so if there is water in the fuel you can't help but notice it.
The good news is that because of the abundance of fuel injected cars
and their low tolerance for water the gas companies keep the moisture
content very low. You can buy no-name gas as long as you use the same
station often and don't have trouble. Even the discounters know if the
tanks leak customers won't come back. In fact the EPA requires the
stations to keep track of the levels to moniter for leakage and to
also test for the presence of water regularly. Most stations now have
fiberglass double wall tanks so they don't leak or rust.

I believe the $20K rule is a decent starting point, but you must
meter it with common sense. Having recently bought mine, for around
that price, I can tell you that I looked at several D's around the
state of FL. It's quite amazing what some folks "believe" their car
is worth. I saw one with a seat removed, the dashboard torn up, and a
motor that could barely run - and this person wanted $18K !!!! He
informed me that it was a "collectable" and the price was
skyrocketing these days. (fortunately enchanted, I may have
been...stupid I'm not!)
My 2 cents: use the knowledge and advice available from folks on
this DML, friends who may own a D, and good common sense. Don't be
enchanted with the site of the car of your dreams - but also don't
lose faith that you can find a quality machine.
Personally, I'd choose a car that is well maintained - with higher
miles. I'm learning how strong these engines really are.
Put it this way, it's a toy and a labor of love. Ask anyone who's
ever owned a boat how much money they invested intially, then
annually for maintenance. Then ask how many times they got to enjoy
it in one year. Arguably, you'll find your D is a better deal - as
toys go! And it has the potential to appreciate in value.

To all who weren't able to make this Fall Foliage Tour that Mike De Luca
set up, missed a great show. I just wanted to thank a few people who helped
make this event the best it could ever be. Thanks to Mike De Luca for making
this whole event possible and for taking the time to plan that road rally on
shelter island. Thanks to Rob and Debbie Grady who hosted lunch at their
shop on saturday and to lead the way for our caravan. I especially had a lot
of fun blocking the traffic and almost getting my friend's car all smashed up
(you all should have seen her face when I went out the wrong way at the hotel
to block the oncoming traffic). I even made some illegal moves for the sake
of the caravan so I hope everyone appreciated what I did for them :). Lets
hope that Mike will set up another event for next year :) Thats all for
now!

It's sad that Michael J. Fox is fighting Parkinson's. It's a very
positive thing that Bob Zilla and Rob Grady, in concert, decided to do
something to help. The package they're offering for a $10 donation is
worth a great deal more than the asked for donation. The time involved
in producing the diagram and booklet multiplied by the time value of the
producers is head shaking.
As of yesterday, from the DML membership (1172) and from those of the
DOA who monitor the list, a total of $330 has been raised. Just 33
people.
I think that's sad!
All the money goes to the MJ Fox Parkinson's research foundation. Cash,

Yesterday I ran into a convention of DeLorean enthusiasts on Shelter Island near the Hamptons.
DeLorean? Yes, the once futuristic car invented by John DeLorean. Went belly-up. You remember. The car doors hinged up, like wings. Michael J. Fox cruised through time in one in the Back to the Future movies.
Yesterday's rally had eight owners with their silver cars shining in the sun. A Long Island dealer, Debby Grady, of West Sayville, said she had 40 more stashed away in her garage.
Last year, and this June, there was and will be a big, big Delorean meeting. And this year, like last, DeLorean himself will address his followers.
"But," said Grady, "we have to fly him in. And he only goes first class."
Nothing's too good for a deposed leader. I don't know why, but the whole thing reminded me of Galaxy Quest.

Subject: front brake rotor replacement
Can anyone give me some pointers on replacing the front brake rotors? The
workshop manual doesn't give any procedure for this. Should I re-pack the
wheel bearings while I'm in there?
When my mom asked me why I keep shaking the steering wheel every time I put
the brakes on, I figure I have been driving with this dangerous condition
long enough. How did the rotors get warped that bad? Two hard stops in a
row from 60mph. That screwed them up real good. And to think that the
window sticker on these cars bragged about the 4 wheel disk brakes. But
then it also bragged about the wonderful epoxy coated frame, and we all know
how that turned out.
I will say that the brakes are certainly adequate to stop the car ONCE. But
you better give them time to cool before you stomp on it again.

Actually if anyone used an air-ratchet to put on your front wheels that
could do it also. Too much torque warps the rotors.

Driving hard in the mountains of Colorado I'm sure I
often do the equivalent of two quick consecutive panic
stops from 60mph. My rotors haven't warped.

That would be me. I just moved here from Texas (after a brief few
months in Illinois).
Are there any Indianapolis owners who know of any good repair shops?
I like to do most repairs and maintenance myself, but if I can find a
great mechanic, I'd rather leave a few things to him/her.
BTW, some suggested mechanics around the US:
*** Delorean Motor Company in Houston: I've had great service with
them. Warren, James, Steve, and Bill have all been a wonderful
help. Too bad I moved out of there before I got to see the new place.
*** Peter B's in Champaign, IL: Peter replaced my water pump. I was
impressed with his work, and he also took the time to show me some
things I could do to my engine to keep it in top shape. There are
quite a few D's in the Champaign area, so he's had a little
experience.

How worried should I be about slight signs of torsion bar rust on my driver's side that I have been recently noticing? Is this something I can cure on my own or am I talking about a difficult torsion bar replacement?

Subject: Strange Stalling problem
I was on the road today with my Delorean, and it stalled at a traffic light.
I tried to start it again, and when I turned the key, it cranked, but did
not catch. Luckily I was on a SLIGHT downhill so I let the car roll and
poped the clutch. The engine started right back up, but as soon as I gave
it gas, it instantly stalled.
I managed to roll/run/stall to the side of the road. I rode the shoulder
for about a minute until i got to a driveway (stalling and bucking the car
the whole way) When I pulled into the business parking lot, the car seemed
to idle fine. I let it sit for a min, and then reved the engine a few
times....all seemed good. I drove a few circles in the lot...all seemed
good.
I got back on the road, and drove for about 5 mintues...it bucked once more
from a stall...then was fine.
I drove about 1/2 hour (going home from work...figured if the car would hang
in there, I could make it without a tow) and it stalled 2-3 more times just
after I started to roll out of another traffic light...i just kept the gas
on, kept it in gear, and it ran fine again after a few seconds.
Made it home without further incident. (another 20 min)
What I noticed:
1. Car would not start the first time when key was turned...seems to be ok
now.
2. When Ideling, the oil pressure would drop between the 0 and the first
tick mark (i thought that seemed low)..could this be an oil pump going bad?
When the car stalled, the oil light was on, but I think that is becuase the
key was in the "On position" when the engine was not running.
3. Engine would cut FLAT out...
4. I ususally put Super in the car, and last week I filled it with regular
gas...dont know if it is being fussy? Maybe something in the line?
Suggestions? Help? I am not a mechanic by any means, so mostly I am
looking for "it could be"s rather then "Try this..." unless the try part is
REALLY easy.

I recently noticed that my drivers side floor get soaked when it rains. It is not leaking through the door anywhere and my floor is perfectly intact. This has probally been a problem for years as the carpet is slightly stained from when I bought it. Do any of you have an idea if perhaps it is leaking through the vent in front of the windsheild or if perhaps through the foot well?

The wheel bearings are sealed and aren't the tapered timken type that many
rear wheel cars use up front. I've heated my brakes to the point they
wouldn't stop the car while hurrying around the track at Road America and
have yet had to experiance any warping problems. I suspect there may have
been a quality control problem regarding the metallurgical properties of the
brake rotors. I remember when my car was new that several owners experienced
warped rotors with-in a few thouand miles while others are still running
around today with good originals.

No problems yet. I don't anticipate any, either, since the hole for the
angle drive cable was just as square after I cut the nipple off as it was
before. The cable fits nice and snug.
And, since my dust cap was glued in by persons previous for unknown reasons,
I applied a little silicone to the top and bottom when I put it all back
together. Not enough to stick as tight as the person previous!
I don't see how it could slip....
