Subject: John DeLorean at the Fall Foliage Tour
As many of the regular readers of the DML know, this upcoming
weekend, Oct 27 & 28th is the second annual DeLorean Fall Foliage
Tour. It starts this Saturday at PJ Gradys in West Sayville Long
Island at 11 A.M. we will depart from PJ Gradys at 1:00PM
http://www.pjgrady.com and caravan out to the Hamtons and Montauk
with stops along the way.
We will be staying at the East Hampton House and there are still
rooms available last time I checked. We have a special rate of $75 if
you mention the DeLorean Tour (ask for Joann if you have a problem).

On Sunday we will take a short ferry ride (about 10 min) to Shelter
Island and we will begin the
DeLorean Road Rally (even people without DeLoreans may participate).
We will then take the north Ferry (about 10 Min) to Green Port for a

Now about John DeLorean, he is invited just like you but
unfortunately has not responded yet just like
many of you. It not too late to make your planes for the tour, I
would like to here from you if you think you may want to attend and
you never know, John DeLorean may just decide to show up and you
wouldn't want to miss that.

I was humored by the following quote on Halloween DeLoreans in a previous
e-mail.

One fog machine would be total overkill and it wouldn,t matter how open the
windows or doors would be you wouldn't see anything. Two and we would never
find you.
The fog machines uses whats called fog juice to give a better fog that lasts
longer but it is very hot for about 18" from the exit. A one second blasts
would fill the car with no visability and if you have asthma you're in
trouble. If you want one I'll lend you mine but you gotta promise to send me
pictures of you running away from the car once it fills up.
Place the machine about 10 feet away from the car and aim it below the car.
That would give an interesting effect. A light breeze would help.

A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a pair of after market tips @
Autozone for my car. The are a larger size than the stock pipes, and
tips. But, they only affix with 2 screws on the underside. The top
portion of the tips rest upon the pipes, and still give plenty of
clearance between teh facia, and the exhaust. I'm quite pleased with
the overall look, and have gotten a good amount of comments from
people who've seen the before/after of things.

I may be out of line here, but...
Before this thread, Someone suggested that I write a article for the new
DeLoreans magazine. Because of that, I had already put some thought in
to this topic.
Below you suggest "we should all consider creating content for the
magazine". Can you explain why you feel this way?? When James was
publishing the E-Zine as a service to the members of the DeLorean
community, I would have been eager to contribute articles if there was
an interest in anything I had to say (Who ever thought there would be!).
But now, "DeLoreans" magazine IS a commercial business. I don't think
Stephen would have taken on this project if he did not see a potential
for financial gain from it. (and I don't fault him for this, It is the
American way.)
I have not seen the first issue of DeLoreans magazine, so I can't
comment on it specifically.. BUT, I don't subscribe to any magazines
simply because I don't understand why I need to pay for a stack of
glossy paper that is usually 50% (or more) of advertisements! The
publisher gets money from the advertisers and the subscribers, yet (in
some cases, I don't know about "DeLoreans") does not pay the
contributors. And the publisher usually owns the copyright to the
article when it is all done!
The comments above also apply to your last 2 points. (DML contribute to
mag, and put energy toward creating). If I want to contribute (give)
something to the DeLorean community, I can do it here on the DML.
I am not a big (direct) customer of DMC Houston, but I would prefer to
see them publish a low-production quarterly newsletter. The cost can be
offset by a income deduction for the "advertising" in the newsletter.
In addition, they could charge a small fee to other's who want to
advertise in the publication. If we add up all of the people that are
selling something (new upgrade part, NOS sitting in their garage, or a
car) there is plenty of opportunity to cover the publishing cost of a
LOW production (limit glossy photos and such) newsletter that will have
plenty of room for technical articles.
You also say below that the DML should be used to promote the various
publications.... While I believe the "no commercial posting" rule has
been removed since James started his employment at DMC Houston, I (and I
think others on the list) are not happy to see the list used as a
obvious tool for promotion. Deloreans magazine is clearly a commercial
venture.
* clarification on the above statement: I am VERY happy to see members
of the DML with commercial interests CONTRIBUTING to the list, and as a
"side effect" they get their name out there and improve their business.

Moderators: this is a blatant plug for a vendor from
a satisfied customer. Please post.
Some time back, Tony Acosta posted an item about laser
prints he had made and offered for sale. There are
four prints with one being a "personalized" print.
After several back and forth emails, I ordered a set.
My prints arrived on Saturday and they were
exceptionally nice. I especially like the
personalized pic. It is a rear view of a D with my
own license plate. Then, surrounding the car are all
the "specs" for the D. You can have it cusomized to
show automatic or 5 speed tranny and any other special
items pertinent to your car. (I had Tony add my twin
IHI turbochargers and had the HP changed to reflect
that.)
Christmas is coming. What a great gift one or all of
these prints would be. They are being mounted and
framed today so they can be added to my "wall of
fame". Drop a hint to the little lady that this is
what you want for Christmas. And, I suspect you would
have to order early, because Tony does this as a side
project.

Ta-da, got what I wanted. Autozone has the perfect reducer for the JC
Whitney tips, number is 17509. Fits inside the tip, large OD fits
perfectly inside the large part of the tip and smaller portion protrudes
through the end and fits perfectly over the existing pipe. Reason for
using it is for support and centering, you have about an inch and a half
supporting the inside of the tip and about the same amount extending
over the tail pipe. It looks great! I am really pleased, I hated those
pathetic little stock pipes. It is now bold and beautiful at the rear
bumper, accenting the overall appeal of the car. (It's the little
things, isn't it!). One "adjustment" no two anything seem to be the
same, the pipes on the car do not extend the same amount (yours probably
don't either), for the sake of uniformity I ground about a 1/4" notch on
the inboard side of the right tip where it reached the curve in the
pipe, so that the two tips extend the same amount. You don't have to
of course but why not?
As mentioned I used Whitney's SS clamps because I was going to crank
down on the end where the cuts were made and didn't know how much
resistance to expect. I positioned the clamps so that the nuts are up
out of view. Now it's very true that a couple dabs of weld would take
the place of the clamps but I don't weld and wherever possible, no one
else touches my D.

underneath it to raise it back up. Solved my problem entirely!

Hmmm ... what to say in reply to Marc Levy's comments...
- I did not intend that articles be written just for DMC's magazine. I
think DMC's magazine, DOA's magazine and the E-Zine, if it ever comes back,
would all benefit from articles written by the many experts that subscribe
to the DML. There is a lot of knowledge and interesting folks out there and
their contributions could be worth while.
- I believe that we all benefit from the DML and any Delorean related
magazines. The benefit is directly related to the content and quality of
the articles. For years I subscribed to the DOA magazine and they had some
good content. I quit when the content moved away from things I found
interesting and moved towards social gatherings. But in their defense I
realized how difficult it is to write new engaging articles year after year.
- Everyone needs to maker their own decision about writing articles and
compensation (or lack of). Personally I hope all the Delorean vendors are
very successful. Competition is good and we need them. The two "for-fee"
magazines might want to consider giving free subscriptions for articles. It
might spur some really great content.
- When I suggested that the DML promote the various publications I meant
that we contribute our individual time and talent to help with articles, not
that it gets advertised on the DML. And note that there are a lot of
publications, other than the three mentioned here, that articles could be
submitted.
- My post was mainly responding to some criticism of the new magazine and
was suggesting that instead of THEY making it better that WE can help make
it better.
I hope this clears things a little. If not, it may generate some new life
for the DML. Even the DML's topics get a little stale after a while and it
needs some new content. Now I'm going to create a second message that posts
some ideas for articles and attempts to generate more from the readers.

Lots of excitement, lots of posts, righteous indignation, varied
opinions, great forum
As to making a buck on an endeavor, yes, business is like that. Stephen
has a ton invested in inventory, much of which will stay on the shelf
while the popular items disappear completely. Much applause for taking
the initiative and spending the money to reproduce door handles and the
like. Filling in the blanks so to speak. He really doesn't have to
start a magazine in order for all of us to find out what's he's working
on, it's outed almost immediately on the list. Starting a new magazine
is very gutsy, a large startup outlay of time and money with no
guarantee of success. The World has been there a long time, very
difficult to pit a newcomer against an established entity, no matter how
great it's potential. People tend to do what they are comfortable with,
resist change, the course of least resistance is to leave things as they
are. I think a great plus in this equation is James Espey, however, if
he should get run over by a wayward Bricklin, there goes the ball game!
