Subject: Reverse Light Switch.
Ever since I've had my car, the back up lights have never turned on.
If I jump the wires seperatly, the lights will turn on. So I know it
must be a defective switch (5-speed). But here's my question. If I
unscrew the switch, will I loose any gear oil? The reason I ask is
because last month I had the tranny drained and refilled with fresh
oil. Needless to say I don't want to have to top-off the tranny a 2nd
time. If I back the car onto ramps, would any oil leak out? And as an
extreme question, would it be safe to tilt the car with ramps on one
side to force the oil over?

Best course of action is to leave the wrinkles in there, they are supposed to
be there. This is true unless you are talking about wrinkles that have been
caused by sitting in the seats and creating an "unnatural" wrinkle. Most
DeLorean seats have dried up and stretched out over the years, thus the
wrinkles are no longer there. You must have a nicely preserved set of seats,
be happy and leave it there!

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I agree with everybody. :-)
On the one hand, we can all count on the 'Zilla door openers to be a
first-rate, easily-installed, bulletproof product. You don't get the
kind of reputation that the 'Zilla products enjoy without a lot of
very careful design, testing, refinement, manufacturing and customer
support. This doesn't come cheap and, as Bob has convincingly argued,
there is every reason to believe that the 'Zilla products are fairly
priced. You are not just buying solenoids and a bit of electronics,
you are buying peace of mind and a low-hassle, no-thinking-required
installation experience.
OTOH, I can vouch that Darryl's door opener system is elegantly
designed, very effective, and robust. Several years ago (before he
had a kit for sale), he generously made the plans for the setup
available without charge, and I successfully reproduced the system at
very low cost. It fit my needs very well: I know electronics, enjoyed
designing my own control system that behaved just the way I wanted
(including safety interconnects to disable the openers when the car
is in gear and when the doors are locked). I also enjoyed exploring
the door wiring to find a way to power the solenoids using the
existing wiring loom. For me, doing it myself had value beyond the
money saved. If you are a serious do-it-yourselfer like me, they I
strongly recommend this system. Many others don't enjoy such things,
or lack the skill or time to pursue them. For these folks, the 'Zilla
approach is the way to go, and no doubt represents a good value.

P.S. -- I, too, am puzzled why Rob and Bob chose to go with heavy
solenoids rather than the more modern (and very effective) actuator
motors that Darryl recommends. I, too shared my positive experiences
with them when they were researching their system. I guess it is
just another instance of the conservative design philosophy that has
earned their products such a stellar reputation.

light, dash gauges, and front right marker light are all tied into the

Hi List,
I want to take my D to homecoming next weekend but I need to do a few
more things to it before its worthy of having a lady in it. I just had the
headliners redone but I need three more parts to make it perfect. I am
missing the rear shelf carpet that lays over the module covers, and I also
need an automatic shift lever.(parts manual image 4/6/0 part #6, from
vin4837). The plastic handle that is molded on to the top of the chrome
piece broke off. I also need the front A post door trim piece (parts manual
8/7/1 #8, passenger side) Now I just need to get a date and I am all set. If
any private party has these items for sale at a reasonable price please
e-mail me. I have parts available for trade or cash.

Andy, Since it's a manual, It needs a clutch pressure plate and disk. If you
keep driving it the clutch plate will wear into the fly wheel and add more
expense. You can see all the parts, old and new on the web site along with an

Matthew, You have had a lot of good reply's, but you may want to take
the radiator out and clean out behind the air conditioner grill. It's
more than likley plugged with bugs and gunk. That's about 1/2 of the
radiator. If air can flow, it won't cool. You can't clean it good
without taking it out, fans block the back and air conditioner grill
blocks the front. Once you do this, then the other things that have
been mentioned can be evaluated properly. You may won't to have a
shop check it for water flow also. Otterstat,thermostat, so on.
My temp gauge virtually never goes above the second mark on the road
and the fans almost never come on except in town or when I turn on
the air. Naturally I have all my Fixes installed.

[moderator note - instead of letting thru the next 5 "I have/don't have a flap" posts I'd like to remind everyone that the hood is very easily damaged and changed, even before the posession of the original owner. All the replacement hoods in the parts channel were the late (no flap/no line) design. It was not unusual for dealers to swap them around prior to delivery if a particular car was damaged on the lot.]
i believe that the gas flaps dissapeared after either VIN 3200 or 3201. -Louie

Like you I wanted longevity, since I drive mine daily. I also wanted good
water channeling.
I finally decided on the BFG Radial T/A + (or Enhanced...).
The rating/performance equals the NCT's and the longevity and water
performance for the buck couldn't be matched in anything. I have been very
happy with the grip (stop and start), and performance under heavy water
conditions too (think Houston and Melissa....).

Hello everyone .. just wondering … does anybody have a good cross
reference part that will replace all 4 of the headlights on the DeLorean
with the Xenon lights?
I just wanted to use these as opposed to the current Sylvania headlights
… as my front fascia is not severly “eyebrowed” yet … the Xenon actually
does not heat up as much as the Halogen .. so it would only seem logical
that a xenon would help prevent the “eyebrow” effect … as well as make
the car look MUCH nicer for night drives
Any input is appreciated ..

Original Craig radio problem here, I think.
My antenna hasn't always gone up and down like it has suppossed to.
Occaissonally it wouldn't go up, but more often than that it would simply
stay up after shutting down the car.
But now... it doesn't go up at all. So no radio reception to speak of, and I
don't dare put a tape in and break the ribbon cable (which the display
wasn't working all that great, either).
I am pretty sure the antenna motor isn't fused in the fuse box; is there an
inline fuse between the radio and the antenna motor? Or is my Craig gone
kaput?

Besides all of the known electical problems affecting the cooling
system I believe the largest source of trouble is LEAKS. The cooling
system in the Delorean has many hoses and connections, many more than
most cars because of the placement of the engine and radiator. If you
haven't changed ALL of the hoses in at least the last 10 years you DO
have leaks. Some of the leaks are very insidious. When the engine
cools down they allow air to be drawn into the system. This is bad
because air circulated in the coolant reduces the coolant's ability to
tranfer the heat out of the motor into the radiator. Worse than that
as the air passes in a "bubble" it causes the pump to stop
momentaraly. The auto bleeder, if installed, helps but only so much.
Some of the leaks are on top of the motor under the air intake
manifold. They can't be seen as the coolant puddles into the recesses
in the block and is evaporated by the heat of the motor. There are
several seals and hoses that can't be seen so if your system won't
hold 15 psi for 15 minutes without losing pressure assume the worst.
If you find yourself adding small quantities of coolant after using
the car, coolant isn't consumed, it has leaked out and gets replaced
by air. Eventually you may notice that the heater doesn't work before
the temp gauge starts to move higher than normal. Be warned that in
the event of a large loss of coolant you cannot trust the temp gauge
as there is no coolant for it to measure! You wouldn't drive on 20
year old tires but many of the Deloreans that I have seen still have
origional belts and hoses. With winter comming and many owners putting
the car away for winter now would be a good time to put some new parts
into the cooling system, it is one of the least glamorous and most
neglected systems on the car. The PRV-6 is very rugged but it can be
damaged by overheating it. The parts you would need, although
expensive, are still cheaper than getting stuck, towed, and then doing
all of the work anyway especially if it happens away from home.
Unfortunatly that is exactly what happened to one of the participants
in last year's Fall Tour. He knew he had "something going on" with the
cooling system yet neglected to take care of it. His radiater after
probably leaking for some time had it's left header tank blow off in
downtown Newport. There was nothing anyone could do for him exept help
him get it flatbedded to a shop. He was stuck several days till Rob
Grady got home and shipped the parts and the shop could put them in. A
little preventive care goes a LONG way. Before you go and buy door
launchers or a luggage rack or fix up the interior money spent making
the car more reliable is a much better investment. You may be looking
good but you may also be stuck on the side of the road! IMHO.

I have no idea how my door opener kit would interface with a competitor's
product. The Zilla stuff is great and bulletproof, but having owned 6
DeLoreans over the last 15 years, I have personally not yet needed any of
it. There are other less costly ways to achieve a similar level of safety
and convenience. My kit is self contained - two 3-button remotes, receiver,
2 actuators, and linkage. Its just a pair of actuators (not heavy
solenoids) that use existing wiring. It unlocks the doors and opens one or
both doors. I use a standard keyless remote unit to power them, but you can
also use most alarm systems as long as there are extra buttons or functions
to use. But with an alarm you wouldn't need half of my kit. This isn't
rocket science. Frankly, anyone who is at all handy can do this without
using my or Grady's kit. Think "power door locks" only its "unlock and
unlatch" instead of just unlock. For a long time I declined offering a kit
because of the many variables - alarm systems, wiring, etc. - but due to
demand have finally put them on my web site. Yes the wiring is the hardest
part, but if "plug and play" is worth an extra $800, you know where to go.

thanks for the input but i sincerely believe the problem is not transmission
related. the clutch is not slipping, grinding, or anything. it's the engine
tuning or fuel injection that is out of wack somehow. as for the clutch
plate - i have a brand new centerforce clutch as of two months ago. that
stuff had BETTER be good after only about 1500 miles! (and i never grind it
or slip it anyway)

Hi,
When I drive my car, the fans doesn't have to work because there is a
sufficiency of air flow, the fans start only when I'm stopped with
engine running.
Of course, you must check everything said in previous mails, but did
you check if you have some tartar in your radiator?
Perhaps the cooling system can't use all the surface of the
radiator, so it could explain why your engine overheat.

If I were going to replace the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing I
would also consider checking the slave cylinder. My clutch was bad at 8000
miles and I put in a centerforce set up only to find the clutch was OK glazed
but OK. The slave cylinder was corroded and would not allow enough movement
in the clutch to engage it. But 15 years later it is still doing fine. Just a
thought as a clutch replacement is no small job on a Delorean.

Well, if you watch the background, not the people, you will notice
that in the scene with the guy on the corner, a DeLorean pulls up
to the redlight! Pretty Cool! Watch it, you'll catch it....for 5
seconds!
Also, there is a Techno/Pop group called the DeLoreans....they play
(gasp!)
New Wave music. I believe they onl;y play around Chicago though.

Too late now, you've probably lost a gear in the antenna mechanism. Friction is
the enemy, what's needed is to wipe the antenna with WD-40, or equivalent, a few
times a year. Had you done this when it was just being difficult you would
probably be ok now. Replacement antennas are readily available: vendors, Radio
Shack, etc.
As to the display and not using the tape, both John Hervey and I do a near
bullet-proof repair at moderate cost. Use your tape, why have something on the
car that you can't use? Do you not use your air conditioner because you might
break it?

I have not posted to this forum in a long time but I felt that the
recent issues concerning the door launchers was important and I
wanted to share my 2 cents worth.
Competition is the spice of life. It keeps prices down and quality
up. The very reason that we all own a Delorean is that we wanted
something different.
The Zilla products are well made and do offer a "plug and play" type
of installation. I am sure that they offer a delicate balance
between price, performance, ease of installation and overall
engineering. I currently have the Lock Zilla, Tank Zilla and Fan
Zilla installed on my car.
Other entries into the door lancher market offer viable alternatives
and I appreciate the opportunity to choose between them. I collect
cars and current have nine including the Delorean.
I would dearly love to have door launchers in my Delorean and I
already have the LockZilla. The thought of an additional $800 to
$1,000 for this modification seems like it makes the option
unafforable to me. This "accessory," based on today's market would
be 7% of the value of the entire car!
Darryl's option is affordable and it appears to make use of the
Dakota actuators which seem to be quality products. While his
version will entail more work, my labor, as a contributing factor to
the overall costs, is insignificant. In short, he offeres me
affordability to an option that I want.
In looking at his option, it appears to me that his profit margin has
to be very, very thin as the costs of the components from Dakota
seems to add up to about the same price as he is charging. Darryl
appears to be trying to help those of us who are looking for an
affordable option, the viability of owning door launchers. I appluad
his motives.
Overall ownership of my Delorean has been one of the most expensive
undertakings that I have endured in the car collection process.
While parts are, for the most part readily available, expertise is
not, and in many cases I have paid out hudge amounts of money to
solve simple problems!
The value of the car has not increased, not that I am looking to
sell, and I see no real opportunity to view the car as anything but
a "most enjoyable depreciating asset." If I can obtain a desired
option and save a significant amout of money by doing some of the
work myself, then the alternative seems clear to me.
Just my 2 cents worth...

How nice to read Peter Lucas' comments on the door
launchers. Like almost everything in life, there is
more than one approach to solving a problem. The
"best" approach is the one that works best for you.
It may well not be the best approach for someone else.
