You also have to realize that the recession of 1982 was the deepest
financial plunge the U.S. economy had taken since the great depresssion. The
DeLorean was earmarked almost exclusivly for the U.S. market then and even
mundane every day transportation cars wern't selling. Certainly the British
government had a number of political reasons for ending the DeLorean
enterprise but they were also becoming anxious for a return on their
investment and that didn't look promising with the direction the worlds
economy was headed. British political rivals took advantage of this to cut
off funds to the company. In my opinion DeLorean fell victim to some very
unfortunate timing in this regard. A couple of years one way or the other
and we'd probably still see Delorean in business.

Actually, it's not the drooping -
it's the way the front fascia curves UPWARD above the headlights - it looks
like the headlights have eyebrows above them, raised in surprise!
it's somewhat annoying for an owner, but no one on earth ever notices unless
they actually own a DeLorean as well! i guess you could say that a D w/o
eyebrows could theoretically be a more desirable buy than an identical one
with the eyebrows. however, the eyebrows can be removed if they really bug
you and you have the time to remove the front fasica. it's just a casualty
of time.

Going over some OLD Delorean Documents,I came across a price list
(estimate) that I got from a Delorean Dealer,for some parts I needed
at the time,for a Restoration on a Delorean(1983 timeline),this
listing was dated on 9/27/1983,I thought it would be interesting to
compare the 1983 prices to 2001 prices(from one of the Delorean
vendors).What I did was averaged out the prices,and it came out to a
average overall,whopping 52% INCREASE on AVERAGE over 1982
prices,remember this is a Average sampling on 25 parts on the
estimate,that was given to me back in 1983,BY a Delorean Dealer,Some
parts are a whopping 250% + or - some are lower now, than when new,or
the same,most of the lowered prices are for non-popular parts.(parts

I think your interpretation of events is a bit "over simplified", if you
read ALL the books available on the subject, and were around at the time,
following events from this side of the Atlantic, you may have come to a more
"balanced" view of events.
Very few people who worked at the factory think it all failed simply because
of some government inspired conspiracy.
I think it has been established that the moulds were sent to a scrap yard
( in the normal way if a company goes bust and everything has to cleared
out) then when the fishing people came along looking for big heavy chunks on
metal to weight their nets, hay presto...they bought them. ....no
conspiracy..just normal business practice.
Poor financial control, and over-optimistic sales predictions are hardly
ever mentioned as important factors in the companies demise.
Whatever your take on past events is, the fact remains that had the factory
survived and prospered, and produced many more cars, then our few remaining
one's would not be as rare, desirable and collectable as they undoubtedly
are.
I love the car and the notoriety that surrounds it.
BTW....BTTF 1 was shown last night in the UK ( again) and has anyone ever
noticed that when the car first "flies off" it has 3 amber door lights, but
when it lands later some of them turned red.

hey guys,
i'm still trying to find the source of my 'thunk' sound i hear when making
turns. last night i inspected the rear trailing arm bolts - i couldn't budge
them with my ratchet, plus they still have the factory epoxy all over them so
i assume they are still ok and tight. i also checked the rear body/chassis
bolts on that U-shaped pipe in the engine compartment. i couldn't get either
of them to budge either.
i got my drive shafts lubed under the boots at an auto tech center. yet i
still hear the mysterious, dull-sounding 'THUNK' when i make sharp turns. it
does this when turning either left or right.
can anyone think of another possibility? someone suggested i might have bad
motor mounts - i'm still investigating that one.

Subject: Speedometer at DMC Houston
I was reviewing some of the video I took at the DMC Houston facility
last week, when I noticed somthing that I was surprised I didn't see
when I was there. There was a complete, metric, instrument cluster
on top of the shelf by the front desk. It included a 160mph
speedometer (NOT the DMCA one), but what caught me off guard
reviewing the video, was that it has a DIGITAL odometer. I took a
screen capture and uploaded it to the Files section.

Keep an eye on those bolts! Maybe they were loose or maybe a shim fell
out. Or maybe they were overtorqued and streched beyond their yield
point! The best thing to do is to replace them with the stronger bolts
available from all of the Delorean parts vendors. It is also
reccomended to double nut them. While you are at it get a 4 wheel
alignment making SURE that they check the "thrust angle" of the rear
wheels. Get some extra shims in case you need them for the alignment
as most shops may not have shims large enough to install.(Shims and
bolts are cheap insurance when considering the alternatives!).

It has been pointed out to me that I unfortunately got a little
sloppy in the way I wrote this posting resulting in an inaccuracy in
the description of the mixture surging. When the engine is stone
cold, the lamda ECU runs the car in a fixed mixture mode and does not
use the input from the lambda sensor to regulate the mixture (via the
signal to the frequency valve). The period where the car runs in this
fixed mixture mode is for the first minute or two after which the
exhaust gasses should have warmed up the lambda sensor. For the
remaining period of the engine warmup (once the fixed-mixture phase
is over) the lambda ECU handles the regulation of the mixture and it
is this phase that the oscillating mixture likely has an impact on
idle quality.
I apologize for my sloppiness in not clarifying that the mixture
oscillation I described only applies during engine warmup after the
very initial stone-cold period (a couple minutes) is over.

I am currently looking at getting a Delorean. One of my final obstacles may
be a mechanic...I have never worked on cars although I would love if DMCNews
or someone else would offer a full day course on "How to perform the 20 most
common repairs". In the mean time just wanted to know if anyone on the list
can recomend a top mechanic in the Balt/Wash area? Has anyone considered a
repair session for the Delorean??? I would imagine it would get a nice
turnout and be profitable....

Yes I use alot of Armorall........never even thought of that as a problem. I will switch to a damp rag as suggested. As well, I will have the system pressure tested.
What about a non silicone based conditioner? I used a great item on my boat that also blackened sun bleached black areas, much better than normal auto stuff, but cannot remember the name and left it on board when I sold it.

I guess that is interesting, but I'm not sure what the
word "whopping" adds to the message. Are you trying
to say that you are surprised by the increase or do
you feel that the increase cannot be justified by the
passage of time? Seriously, I'm curious.
I'm looking at a December 1981 Road & Track (the one
with the DeLorean article) and quote the following
prices Saab 900 @ $10,400; Volvo 242 @ $9785; Audi
4000 @ $9215. Increase any of those by 52% and offer
that to a dealer for a "comparable" new car and you
would be laughed out of the showroom.
Yes, I know that many of these parts are "old", but
the cost of physical storage is not cheap, there is
inventory tax and insurance to be paid every year, and
the basis of all commerce is supply and demand. All
in all, though I would long for 1982 prices, I think
the pricing on most DeLorean parts is reasonably
competitive with the parts for any other car, new or
old.

They can be reproduced but the cost to do so would make the body
panels that are made from them probably TWICE the amount the
originals cost now. Maybe in the future when all body panel
inventories are gone....then maybe someone may make them...but I
doubt it. Not only do you need the dies but also the press. Don't
forget...the dies wore out rather quickly and had to be replaced
because of the Stainless steel so it wouldn't be a one time thing to
make a die.

This thread probably won't last long, but...
I own 2 DeLoreans (16187[red+turbo] and 17115[ss]) one of which is
currently clinically dead due to a blown head gastket (at 47.000 Km).
My 'reliable' car is a 1989 Pontiac Grand Am.
