I agree with everything John said, but I have one comment to add. On
my OEM fuel sender (which works perfectly I might add), my low fuel
light comes on at exactly 2.5 gallons remaining. If you have
Tankzilla, I hear the light comes on at a much lower remaining level.
Essentially, if you have tankzilla, and your low fuel light is on,
GET GAS NOW. Otherwise your safe for probably another 20-40 miles
depending how you drive. Just dont take any sharp corners or blunt
accelerations with a low tank.

Subject: Hot start problem
List, I don't have this problem yet, knock on wood, but I do have a
question regarding it. I realize that 95% of hot start problems are
caused by a faulty fuel accumulator. Another cause is a faulty check
valve in the fuel pump causing the system to lose pressure also. The
other cause is a faulty thermo-time switch causing the cold start
valve to fire every time the engine is started, flooding a hot engine.
The way to check for this is to unplug the cold start valve when the
engine is hot, & if it starts up, the problem is a faulty thermo-time
switch. If this doesn't solve your hot start problem, it is most
likely caused by a faulty accumulator. It could also be the fuel pump
check valve. Now for my question: Is there any way to tell which
one is causing the problem, the accumulator or the check valve,
other than buying an accumulator & installing it because it is most
likely the problem? If there is no way to tell, I'd much rather spend
$15 on a new check valve before I spend $110 on a new accumulator
if I'm not 100% sure what is causing the hot start problem.

Heres some more details on my idle problem.
All the Vacuum lines seem to be alright.
The Frequency valve is buzzing like it should be.
If I can get the car to stay running long enough to get to the engine I can keep it running
if I pull the throttle lever back a little but If I let off and let the throttle lever hit the microswitch it will
die just a few seconds later. Is this a sign of a bad microswitch? I pulled the wires off and cleaned
the contacts but it didn't help any. Is there anyway to rebuild this? What about the Idle speed
regulator? Can that be rebuilt?
Thanks for the help......................Jason # 5903

Of course, that could have changed. Anybody written to him lately? And got

Subject: Delorean one experience with tach
As many of you have realized by now, my tach does not work correctly, but gives an incorrect reading consistantly and refuses to drop below 1500 or go above 2500. Well I called up DMC One in Calif. And some guy got on the phone and he cut me off in the middle of, what my tach is doing speech, by esentaily insulting my intelligence with an attitude. After he realy got on my case I told him, HEY you never even let me say what is wrong. He simply wants to sell me a complete tune up kit and never helped me find out what I should do or if it could actually be my tach(Which by the way I was ready to order if need be). Anyway, have any of you all out there had the tach guage itself go bad and have the same disheartening runins with DMC One??(remember my tach is consistantly wrong and does not fluctuate) And as far as tuning the car up, I have already attended to with my race motor builder mind you, a tune up. So my car is A OK except for the tach.
Please help, Casey

I'm having, there's no trouble my baby hasn't been able to cure. Even after
three months of ownership I still get that lighthearted feeling of being in
love every time I glance back at her in a parking lot. I've never felt such
pleasure driving any automobile before, I actually look for excuses to drive
it. I can't praise this car enough and there isn't any other vehicle on the
planet that I would rather have than a DeLorean. I had it at a car show
this weekend and many people got excited to see it, especially a few
screaming girls. Although I did overhear some really weird conversations
about it when people didn't realize her owner was standing nearby.
She's truly the best thing I've ever spent money on. I would do anything to
keep her, and it's nice to see so many owners appreciate their cars for the
works of art they truly are. Thank you John DeLorean, I love every day of
it!

I've had some people contact me about needing the convention rate on the
Marriott hotel to extend into Sunday night. This has now been arranged. The
$74 rate is good for the dates surrounding the event as well, but I do have
a limited block of rooms available since this is such a popular hotel.
As I mentioned in the last message, we're happy to have the Mercedes 300SL
club joining us as well as the Bricklin clubs, who are celebrating their
twentieth year as organizations. With the inclusion of the 300SL's we'll be
able to show all three production gullwing cars at a single event.
We're working on guest speakers and I'll keep everyone informed as the
details unfold. This is our first year for holding such a big event and
while we would very much like to follow in Ken Koncelik's footsteps, we know
those are some pretty big shoes to fill. However, Ken K. has been most
helpful in our planning and we would not have been able to pull this
together without his help.
I'll soon be adding details about each days events to our club website
(http://www.ncdmc.org) and I'll keep everyone informed here as well.

Hello everyone,
This subject was on my Acura NSX mailing list:
<To confirm, yes: cryogenically treating rotors will increase rotor life
by at least 100%, and as much as 200%. Further, it makes rotors (any
rotor - though it is best to start with a new, high-quality rotor such
as Brembo or ATE) much more resistant to warping and cracking.>
The Carbotech Engineering Company has developed a Brake Friction
Compound. The rotors are treated in the same manner as the torsion bars on
the DMC. Interesting.

Pure water is never the way to run nor is 70/30, trues water has better
cooling power but don't forget antifreeze lowers the freezing point as well
as raising the boiling point. I don't know how it is in the North but in
Virginia a 70/30 mix causes water to boil off when the temp creeps up. (not
212 degrees because as everyone knows when water is under pressure that
raises the boiling point as well.) A 50/50 mix is probably the best mixture
you can have to keep the engine cool enough and to keep the water from
boiling off or freezing in the winter.

Congratulations! You've been "Delorean One'd" by Ed the owner, no less. What a jerk he is. I was deciding whether to have him or Steve Wynne at DMCUSA in Houston totally restore my car. Wynne was a gentleman and seemed honest and D1 was only interested in getting it out there (I live in Connecticut) and going to town. I have a letter that Ed wrote to me that was so incrediblly rude you'd think an ignorant twelve year old wrote it...insulting me for my decision to go to DMCUSA instead of him.

Walt,
Good guess, but it won't work. The internals inside the steering box are
machined completely differently for the input shaft and the cover
plate/tensioner. They will not swap places. It might be possible to install
the entire rack assembly reversed - upside down tho. It would require some
modified mounting brackets and steering column shaft, but this stuff needs to
be changed anyway, right ?

You missed the moral of the story. If you had taken care of your car
and not let the hoses deteriorate to such an extent as they obviously
had then you wouldn't have gotten in trouble. I find that MOST
problems on the road were preventable with some normal maintainence
and like they do on airplanes a "pre flight" or at least a once over
with an eyeball. If you know you haven't changed a hose on the car in
20 years then you deserve getting stuck and maybe blowing your engine!
BTW what is the "origional vacuum hose air removal system"? The
cooling problems are not vin related except for the early cars that
had the otterstadt facing up. (Not really a big deal and easily
updated). The major problem is leaks and aging rubber parts.
Electrically speaking the fan fail relay is dangerous, the circuit
breakers underrated and loose connections contribute to the cooling
system problems which IMHO is the most neglected system in most cars
untill it overheats and the the owner wonders why it happened to me!

You can remove the return hose on the accumulater, plug up at the tee
and see if fuel is comming out of the accumulater when under pressure.
If it is then it means that the diaghram is leaking and the acumulater
is dead. If it doesn't leak then a pressue gauge can confirm that the
system isn't holding rest pressure probably because of a bad check
valve at the fuel pump, assuming no leaks.

Well Cameron, most everyone who tries to do business with CA DMC-1 seems
to have some sort of problem. I've seen only one exception on the list,
that I recall.
This leads me to another question. The DeLorean Owners Association
Board of Directors, Tech Editors, etc. do not seem to contribute to, nor
participate in, the list. Is it one of those things where it's them and
us or are we all the same group? Certainly Ed Bernstein (DMC-1) does
not contribute and he seems to be one of the most involved and
knowledgeable and with great amounts of experience. He's a major player
in the association. I see by the magazine he does a lot of emcee work,
I think with his hat on backwards or something like that, seems like a
great guy, and yet...! He does put beautiful ads in the magazine
though..."call me and I'll come pick up your car, wherever you are, and
you're troubles will be over."
I wonder!
(Moderators if this doesn't fit throw it out...my motto always: "when in
doubt, throw it out.")

That's interesting, Jim. I now have tankzilla installed, because my
old fuel sender would point straight up occasionally. When I still
had my original sender installed, I remember I had very low fuel,
less than 1/4 tank, and I drove up a steep hill & the fuel gauge
dropped to empty & only then did the low fuel light flicker. I have
also read somewhere, maybe in the archives, about different
experiences with the low fuel light & one said that the low fuel light
came on when the gauge hit empty, & he ran out of gas 30 seconds
later. According to service bulletein ST-28-11/81 a different fuel
sender was introduced at vin 5238. Both you & I would have this
type of fuel sender, (my vin is 16822) so that wouldn't be what is
causing the discrepancy. Any ideas?

Heh, that would be Ed. I did this same thing earlier this year. I wasn't
able to tell him about half of the problems with my car and he jumped in
with "I'm the only professional in the business. I know what to do to it"
etc.
Do what I did, call Don Steger at DeLorean Motor Center at (714) 554-6794.
It's roughly in the same area as DeLorean One. He and Dan did one heck of
a job on my 81 D. I ran into a couple problems once I got it back (heater
hose was routed wrong and burned through, a fuel injector fell out due to
last minute adjustments when I picked the car up) but no major problems. I
can take some credit for the slight problems. I was really pushing them to
get the car done quickly for me (since it is my daily driver).
I felt very comfortable doing business with Don. He is a factory-trained
DeLorean mechanic and has been doing this for 20 years. He's a real easy
guy to talk to, and most importantly, I trust him.

Subject: Finding Light Bulbs
Hi list,
I have already talked to a couple of the parts vendors about this, but now I
would like to direct it to everyone, maybe someone could help.
There is little lights behind the A/C control panel 7 in all They light up
the "Door Lock" light defrost light and fain fail light. Has any one found
these in their local parts store?
OR do you have a cross referance that works?
Thanks so much!
