Subject: Hot Start Problem: Temporary Fix.
In my last post, I gave an example of my hot start problem. I had a
jumper wire inserted into the hot start relay to fire the CSV
whenever the engine is cranked. The problem was the heat here, since
the engine wouldn't cool quickly enough due to the ambient air temp.
If I left my car for only a few minutes, it would have a hard time
starting. The pressure was still high enough in the system to fire
the injectors quickly, but the CSV would open up and flood the engine.
What I ended up doing was running two lengths of wire tie-wrapped
together. One wire was plugged into the return from the CSV, and the
second into the ground connection, both in the Hot Start Relay
socket. I then connected a push button switch to the other ends of
the wires. The button sits behind my parking brake with enough slack
so that I can pick it up with my left hand, and turn the ignition key
with my right hand. Now I can fire the CSV only when I need it to
asist me in starting my engine. Plus since it plugs into the HSR
socket with spade connectors, it can be installed with no
modifications to the system.
This isn't a supposed to be a permanent cure for my car, but it is
there to help me in emergency situations. It's also nice not just for
convience purposes, but saves from the embarassment of having to open
the engine cover in public to start your car.

Hi list,
First of all I would like to thank everyone for all the advise, it is really
good.
I was wondering if the gas guage in the DeLorean usually takes a while for
it to go where the tank of gas is.
When I start my car up it usually takes a while before it shows true gas
level.
Does Tankzilla Take care of this problem? Is there something I can do to my
fuel sending unit, or is this a common problem?

I am tired of the one bad product that is in my D, the radio. Can anyone
recommend either on or off of the list which radio they switched to and the
quality of it. I am not looking to have one of those massive vibrate the
block radio, just one that I can enjoy quality sound while I de-stress in my
D.
I would just rather hear from owners versus hearing what the Circuit City
salesman has to say.

This might seem like a crazy question but do the vents located behind
the door windows on the side body vent anything or are they just for
show. Also is it me or are there alot more Back To The Future toys,

I don't want to alarm you, but you should stop
driving your car immediately. The clunking you
hear is probably the trailing arm bolts. These
should be replace immediately, as failure of
either of these two bolts will cause your rear
suspension to collapse.

There is a blank-off cap on the radiator (It isn't and should not be
an ordinary radiator pressure cap). They can and do leak and the cure
is to remove it and either replace the rubber gasket or sometimes a
little silicone is enough to fix it. Be careful as it is on a plastic
neck and if you are not careful it can break. As always do not work on
it if it is hot as you will burn yourself with hot coolant. The
radiator cap on the overflow bottle can be tested by a standard
radiator pressure tester with an adapter for the cap. Check that it
holds 15 psi and will release any more than that but it doesn't leak
under pressure and the brass cup on the bottom is not stuck so it can
release any vacuum. They don't fail any more than on any other car.

It could be a tight steering rack or maybe it just needs to be
relubricated. Also check your tires for the proper air pressure and
lubricate the tie rod ends. If it is really bad and this doesn't help
find a good alignment shop as this is not normal and it indicates a
serious problem which is potentially dangerous to drive with.

Found all the bolts you mentioned and facia is off. I have now strightened and put in the aluminum piece ready to reinstall.

On the frame there is a hand written number 4159 by my vin is 4149 strange.

Check the c-v joints on the rear drive axles. They allow the drive
axles to move in and out a little as the wheels go up and down so they
move in and out. They should probably be disassembled, cleaned, and
relubricated. While you are under there also inspect the trailing arm
bolts.

Well, as expected, the cable channel "E!" finally did a True Hollywood Story on Jim Varney. They quickly discuss his DeLorean ownership and show a quick shot of one.
Here's what's funny: They have an old friend of Jim's talk about the night they went for a drive so Jim could show him how fast the DeLorean goes. This man seems to remember going 147 MPH.
I suppose what they don't know can't hurt them in this case. --Unless this DeLorean had some serious modifications. Trent??

I have this exact same problem with mine. I checked the trailing arm bolts
to see if they'd backed out but they hadn't. And I can't see anything else
that would make noise around corners. It's kind of a low clunking sound
that can be felt through the seats. It's most noticeable when pulling out
of driveways where the weight shifts to one side. But if I make two right
hand turns for example it will only clunk on the first turn.
Any ideas?

Thats what the factory clock plugged into on earlier cars. I am
assuming you have a VIN in the late 81's or later. I didn't see the
plug on my car (without a clock, VIN 6960) when I took my console off
this winter, but it still may be behind the AC control panel, (which I
didn't check).

It might be nice for some of the vendors to take all of these "what's in
your emergency kit" posts and create an emergency kit - just for all of us
who are fairly new to the car and aren't sure what might be needed. A
container that would fit nicely in the storage box behind the driver's
seat, or something that would fit nicely in the shallow end of the trunk.

Speaking of emergency equipment... don't forget that if you need a tow truck,
it needs to be a tiltbody. Grabbing your D by the suspension and hoisting it
in the air can damage your lower control arms, among other things.

I just spoke with Sun Star America the other day. They said that the
DMC-12's will begin shipping in September at suggested retail price of
$39.95. They will then release a "BACK TO THE FUTURE" version of the car,
with wheels that flip for easy hover conversion, in November. Stephen Clark
of BTTF.com informed me that Sun Star employees were at Universal Studios a
while back, taking dozens of photos of the BTTF DMC-12 for reference.
The gold-plated DMC-12, is scheduled for release March/April 2002.
Although, this will only happen if sales for the stock DMC-12 & BTTF DMC-12
are high and the demand is there for the gold-plated version.

The sound that Andy is hearing (clunking when turning) is possibly the
sliding motion of the outboard drive shaft inside the bearing race. See
Delorean World (Winter 1986) for cure. Andy, check your email for my personal

Brian - I believe I am the only DMC parts vendor offering a heavy duty
replacement steering shaft and u-joint assembly. I've been selling them for
years, but they haven't quite made it onto my web site (delorean-parts.com)
yet - I'm kinda slow at that stuff. Anyway, its a bulletproof assembly
which goes for $240 plus shipping. Let me know if you are interested.
(I really don't like using this list for self promotion, but felt this was
important enough to override that).

Hi all,
I had a similar problem however it was comming from the front, I must
admit at first I thought it was from the rear but it turned out to be
the steering rack. When you put the lowered front springs on the
front of the car it alters the angle of the front trailing arm and
emphisises any play you have in the steering rack. Fortunatly the
steering rack on the D does have some ajustment shims to enable the
rack to be tightened up when it gets sloppy. This might not be the
same as the problem you are experiencing but it might be worth a look.
Has anyone else experienced a knocking sound after putting lowering
springs on?

Thanks to Les Huckins my Craig radio display finally works.
Bought the 1981 DeLorean last Febuary and I was getting sick and
tired of not seeing what station I'm on.
I still do play tapes and may some day upgrade the stereo to
something more modern (like I have seen on some internet sites).
Some have installed speakers into the back wall while others have
built a separate box that rests on the parcel shelf and holds the
midranges and a woofer.
I also use a portable CD player that uses a metal tape cassette which
slides into the radio and can play my CD's too.
