Andy - Your symptoms indicate the clutch line
or you need to bleed your clutch. You can try
bleeding it first and if that doesn't work,
go ahead an replace the hose.

hey all,
today it was SUPER hot and sticky out here in Fargo, ND. it was around 95
degrees and very humid. anyway, i went out to lunch at work around 2pm and
my transmission suddenly started to grind gears now and then. sometimes it
was hard to get out of 1st or 2nd gear.

I had the exactly the same problem with my plastic line. When the clutch
pedal was fully depressed and only released a tiny bit, the clutch would
"grip" already.
And with hot weather I had trouble shifting Rev, 1st and 2nd.

I had the plastic line replaced with the stainless one a week ago and
I must say it's a BIG difference! The Problem went completely away, and
the point where the clutch "grips" is now in the upper quarter of the
pedal-way instead of all the way down.
I would really recommend you to replace the plastic line!

It's usually the fault of the sending unit, not the gauge. When I cleaned my
tank and replaced my fuel pump boot and hoses, I noticed a fair amount of
black silt inside my sending unit. I rinsed it out with acetone, and the
gauge reads just fine now. NOS sending units are, I think, generally
unavailable, so the usual replacement is the Tankzilla unit, available from
P.J. Grady and some other vendors.

All,
Regarding the below message on the plastic clutch line- I have the
plastic clutch line also but have been 'living' with it because I
have read/heard that it is a fairly major operation to have the line
replaced and that when doing it you might as well put in a whole new
clutch also. Is there truth to this rumor or is it possible to just
swap out the plastic line for the steel one? Any insights/experiences
welcome!

Hello
Every once in a while the cooling fan light would go on, and flicker. Now it
sometimes stays on for a longer time. I can also hear it kick in a shut off.
Also, when I was looking though the DMC dealer brochure, I saw at the end
that the previous owner had written "coolant fan module" and it had a price
of like $28.00.
Do I need this "coolant fan module"?
Thanks a lot!

John,
If you have any mechanical aptitude, try taking your sender unit apart and
fixing it yourself. The seal is rubber and reusable unlike the copper seals
in the rest of the fuel system. Inside the sending unit, usually what
breaks is the wire connecting the switch for the 'low fuel' warning light.
When this wire comes loose from one end, then it tangles with the float to
give inaccurate readings. Also you might want to tighten the sliding
connection at the float. The original sender is cheaply made and prone to
failure. If you want to fix it only once, then get a Tankzilla.

Some of the early ones were built that way. There is a DMC service
bulletin on this. With the Otterstat on the top, you can get an air
bubble in there and have the fans turn on/off at the wrong temp. Fix
was/is to rotate the pipe. VERY early cars have solid pipe almost all
the way to the engine, over the airconditioner. To rotate that style
you have to cut the pipe.

Mark your calendars now for the 2nd annual Minnesota Fall get-together
scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16 at Deer Lake Orchard. The fall colors will
be great, the weather is focasted to be perfect, the company of other
Delorean enthusiasts is always enjoyable and it is a chance to take the
Delorean for one last cruise before the end of the season.
Last year we had a good showing of the local Deloreans. The Local newspaper
came out and ran a full page article on the front page of the second
section. The Delorean owners had a chance to talk with other local owners
and put faces to email addresses.
This year we hope to get even more cars from the upper mid-west area. Live
entertainment, wagon rides and food is planned and we expect many more
non-owners will attend this year to check out the cars. Specifics of the day
are not finalized and will be announced later.
So shine up your cars (with the grain) and mark your calendar for Sunday,
Sept. 16.

Subject: Mismatched VIN/Build months
In the course of assisting Knut Grimsrud in creating the DeLorean Production
Chronology over the past few years, we've noticed a few cars like this. One
possible explanation (partially backed up by a De Lorean Motor Company
internal memo discovered at the factory in 1997) is that some cars for one
reason or another were pulled from the assembly line (the memo discusses
cars with emission problems, in particular) and once the problem was
corrected they were returned to production, hence the build month being "out
of whack" with the rest of the VIN's brethren.
I second Erik's welcome to Bastiaan, and encourage you to register for the
DeLorean Owners Directory...

The otterstat needs to be submersed in order to work properly.
With the switch in the up position, air can collect around the
thermostat elements in the switch and prevent the switch from
closing by insulating the switch from the actual coolant
temperature. This would prevent the fans from coming on,
risking an overheating condition.

Refer to your parts manual 1:3:1 and you will find the different
configurations with the vin break at 1233. The reason for the change
was the concern of an air bubble covering the switch and preventing an
accurate temp. It appears that if you cut the pipe (101943) to make it
look like 110131 and replace hose 108675 you can change it to the
higher vin config. (This is probably what the factory did anyway).

I replaced my plastic clutch line with the stainless one it was fairley
easy. The hard part was replacing the slave cylinder and bleeding it. I

I am so happy I installed the steel line. I was a pain, you do need
to use a vacum pump bleeder to get the job done, the bleeder screw
for the line is in the worse possible location and you can only open
it by using a socket and working blind.

In 1985 I replaced just my plastic clutch line with the SS Braided.
The most difficult task was connecting and bleeding at the slave cylinder.

I haven't got my car at home right now, so making a picture is going to be
difficult. I DID find a picture on Stian Birkelands' website
<http://home.online.no/~stianfb/norway.htm> on which one is quite clearly
visible. To make it more clear I've cropped and marked the picture and put it up
at <http://www.vdwouw.demon.nl/doorguide.jpg> (Hope Stian doesn't mind) ;-)
If you look closely you'll see two "bulges" made of SS next to the latch-slot,
this is one part, going all around this slot. I don't know which version this
would be, but now at least you have some idea of where to look. If you car is
"edged" (for lack of a better word) instead of rounded like in this pic you
probably don't have the guides. Contact your favorite vendor with your VIN#
handy; they'll know which version you'll need...
Good luck,
