The idle on my D starts out at 1000, then quickly goes from 500 to 1000 and
back and forth and continues every time I get to a light. It almost feels
like it is about to die out. I changed the coil and coil wire as was
recommended by a friend but that did not fix it. Any ideas PLEASE!

We have installed several hundred heavy duty window motor/regulators from DeLorean One, Swedish Automotive, Kapac, DMC Houston, and PJ Grady with absolutely no door denting problems.
Virtually all damages related to window motors is caused by improper installation procedures. Keep in mind that there is nothing about the window motor operation that would cause denting of the door panel.

I am getting a small dent removed from the door of my D, on July 9th. The
owner of a large Body shop here, formerly did body work on DeLoreans as part
of the original QAC facility and is familiar with this work.........however
they will use a relatively new technique on this one.....they have a machine
that has several "fingers" on it that are epoxied to the metal and will PULL
the metal out versus pushing it from the backside. When the job is done
the contact points are heated and the expoxy lets loose and it is ready for
texturing......
This is a quite small dent, ( 1/8 inch deep and tapering out a few inches)
but noticeable, and I have been putting off having it done for a couple
years, although it is fully covered by insurance. One question he asked,
was whether I knew HOW that side door body molding is fastened. Is it
cemented to the stainless, as we both suspect or are there bolts or
fasteners of some sort. How is it removed and can it be recemented back
on? He would like to take it off to facilitate this dent removal and it has
a VERY slight bend in it too, which would come out when it is put back on.
Can someone comment on taking this Vinyl body molding off and putting it
back on? Adhesive?

After washing my DeLorean the other week, I took it for a drying off drive.
The car felt funny and sputtered a little during acceleration. When it got
up to around 3000 RPM's it was fine. It cruised along at 70 MPH with no
problems. I assumed something in the engine compartment had gotten wet.
Another week went by, and I took it out again. I had the same problem, so I
check all the sparkplug wires and all were sealed tightly to their plugs and
the distributor. I checked and found no signs of water in the plugs wells
either.
I took the car out Saturday morning and again it hestitated during
acceleration until 3000 RPMs then it once again steadied out. However, while
cruising the interstate, it began to sputter and jerk aa little at 70 and 75
MPH. It didn't doi it all the time just sometimes. The car also idles a
little rough, I mean the car shakes. The tach shows it idling around 1000
RPM, but the engine isn't running right as the car has never shaken before
during idle.
I'm wondering what the problem is. Is it possible that it's the primary
pressure regulator? I'm trying to get her back in shape to go to the ETDOC
meeting at Biltmore, so I don't have but a few weeks to figure this out and
get the car fixed. Any suggestions from the list would be greatly
appreciated.

FYI...
My old guage pegged at the top all the time, too. For some reason, it
no longer does this with the high-output USADMC engine. When cold, it
pegs near the top, and when warm it cruises in the upper/middle of the
range and idles near the bottom.
It probably helps that I'm using nice, fresh synthetic oil and not
that rancid, 60-million-year-old gunk. :-)

With both fans running properly on my car, my cooling system barely
goes above 220º. My car has the 3-layer radiator, new pump,
thermostat, stainless overflow bottle, radiator cap, new hoses and
the overheat protector. It does have a slight leak on the y pipe
under the manifold. And my car is a dailydriver in 110º+ weather in
the summertime. When the A/C runs is the only time the temp creeps
above 220º. And even then, it still touches the 220 mark. The cooling
fans normally kick on @ 220º, and will kick off @ 180º or so. The
only time I've ever had the temp go any higher was when the water
pump shut off (broken belt).
Right now, my left front cooling fan has failed. To avoid slow
cooling, and to keep performance, my otterstat has been bypassed, and
a switch installed. This way my fans are fused to always run when the
engine is on. I don't run my A/C right now because it will heat up my
car too much. But with only 1 fan on constantly, my car runs cool.
If your car starts creeping up to 240º, then I would say there is a
problem. The first thing to check is how tight you alternator belt
is. If it's loose, it could be slipping. Which in turn would not spin
the water pump as quicky as normal.

Ok, I think I have a faulty control pressure regulator since I have
the same pressure (3.5 bar) cold or hot. I am going to attempt to
take it apart to see if I can fix it. At this point I have nothing to
loose since I have to get a new one if I don't attempt to fix it...or
I get a new one if I screw it up and it doesn't go back together. I
know that a few people (I don't remember which ones on this list)
have successfully done what I am about to do. Is there any advice,
instructions, knowledge you can share with me? If so please email me.

Hello again,
First of all I would like to thatn everyone that responded to my
previous question about my backfiring engine; I will pass on the info
and hope they can solve it at the shop.
When I got my car out of its home (http://www.cartainer.nl (only in
Dutch, sorry!!!)) I noticed a ticking sound by the engine, this
turned out to be an arcing spark plug lead on the left bank, I put it
back the right way, so the ticking is solved now, but the engine
still backfires.
Since I had gotten a tip that concerned the frequency valve I decided
to look where it was located (may seem dumb, but I really didn't
know). Well I found it, but finding it made me doubt wheter it
actually works or not: I read the section in the Work Shop Manual on
the subject and did some searching in the archives; according to
those the FV should be buzzing at 70Hz, with a changing dutycycle
between 20% and 80%.
70Hz should be easy to hear or feel I would think, but I DO NOT hear
nor feel it buzzing... Supposing it does not work; what effects could
this have on engine performance? If I understand the explanation
right it would cause the engine to run lean, not rich as mine is
doing. Or am I completely wrong here???
I also found out that I will have to check the electrics to my fuel
pump some day soon: as I reported earlier it does not shut off
throught the Inertia Switch, today I discovered that it even runs
without the RPM-relay in place: if I put the ignition to II the pump
starts humming and keeps doing so untill I turn back to I or 0.
Could this have some influence on the ECU too? The RPM relay does
give it some signal, so it wouldn't surprise me at all...
Please answer me ASAP, as my appointment with the shop is less than a
day away now... Thank you VERY much in advance,

Starting on June 8th every friday evening from 6-9pm there is a Cruise
night in Herrin, Illinois. Anyway the first night I was at work and my mom
came by and said there was a Delorean uptown. Well, I stopped working (my
job allows me to do so) and rushed uptown to go take a look. Of course I
was wishing that I had my camera with me but I didn't. I didn't find the
owner and I had to get back to work. Then last friday it was there again
and I of course had my camera this time and took a couple of pictures. I
didn't stay long because I had things that I had to get done. It was an 83'
and it was for sale. I am not a owner yet and probably won't be for a few
more years. So, seeing a Delorean gets me all excited. Well, I just
thought I'd mention my encounter. Take care.

The O2 sensor is before the cat on every fuel injected car (though some
cars have a second O2 sensor after it as well). Generally, you want to
put the O2 sensor as close to the engine as possible.
Removal of the cat should not upset the O2 sensor at all. Since the O2
sensor is not used at full throttle conditions and (IIRC) is not used at
idle either, I would look elsewhere for the problem. While a problem with
the O2 sensor might be responsible for very bad gas mileage, I think that
it's likely that the problem is elsewhere since it would not cause the
other symptoms.

I have 5 speed DMC-12. I never felt comfortable as far as my left foot position was concerned. All my other cars have had a footrest. Most of my cars he been standard shift. Last year Dave Bauerle installed a dead pedal on my DMC-12.
It makes all the difference in the world. It feels just right. I am 5'-9".

Hello List members,
I just read on a web site something which indicates that there may have been some incidences of people being trapped in their DeLoreans because the doors wouldn't open. At least that was one person's opinion. The site goes on to say that the problem can be fixed.
I find the possibility of being trapped in my DeLorean kind of scary because of the cabin's rather cramped quarters. Is this really a potential problem, and if so, Is there a remedy? If so, what is it?

(Moderator's note: It sounds as though the lady had LMC and DMC confused. Logan Manufacturing was owned by John DeLorean at one time and their logo, LMC, was in the same script as DMC. They manufactured ski grooming equipment.and were located in Utah.)
No QAC in Utah. There was one in Irvine, CA, but not Utah.

Even as much as I've heard from all you guys on here, I'm still somtimes
amazed about people's misconceptions of the car. I try to be as nice as I
can to answer any questions, but I still have to ward off people who want to
dismantle my car to find the cocaine that they swear was hidden in every
DeLorean. I still get the occasional "I used to know a guy who had one but
he couldn't drive it in the rain or it would rust," but lately I've been
getting some weird ones. One man asked me if I built it myself, and another
insisted I had a Chrysler 440 engine. A kid not much older than me pulled
me out of work so he could look at it, but he contested every fact I told
him about the car. He insisted that the car from the factory would do 0-60
in 3.5 secconds if I "knew how to shift right." And another guy was
contemplating my grille with a puzzled look on his face. He then said
"DMC?! Weren't those made by GMC?"
It's okay, I love the questions and I love the car. It's the best thing
I've ever spent money on.

I bought a couple of replacement rubstrips recently, and I guess the
adhesive backing was old or defective and wouldn't stick. I couldn't even
pull the backing off, I ended up removing the old tape completely. I got
some double sided sticky tape from 3M that worked perfectly, it was almost
the perfect width too. You should be able to find it at automotive stores,
it's a roll of red backed tape, and the stuff itself is actually a light
gray very thin foam strip. It holds to the stainless quite firmly but can
be removed if needed.
If your'e having trouble finding the stuff let me know and I'll see if I can
locate some.

For some reason, I keep hearing this rumor ALOT. Here is Vegas, there
is a significant population of people who are from Utah. I've heard
about 3 different 'Urban Legends' about the DeLorean being built in
Utah. While I have heard these rumors for the past couple of years,
they are all simular to the point of being almost exact. One such
rumor that was told to me by several people was that Logan Mfg. was
building DMC-12's. I had one guy walk up to me at Pep-Boys and start
up a conversation. He asked me if my car was built in Ireland or
Utah. Puzzled, I told him of course Northern Ireland. What then
proceded was a conversation discussing what he ment by Utah. The guy
swore up and down that up at Logan, they had a seperate building
where DMC-12's were assembled. He then told me a story of how he used
to be a delivery boy for some sort of company back in early 1982. And
that one day he had to make a delivery to Logan Mfg. The guy swore
there were a least 30 cars that he saw sitting ready to be shipped.
The guy even described to me where the styrofoam pads were when they
were stuck to the car. Amazingly, he was right. But he said my car
had something that none of the cars he saw did. And he pointed to the
metal plate on my door jamb. My VIN plate.
Are these stories true? I don't know. While I have gotten VERY
simular stories from various people I've met, I've never seen any
rock solid proof. Untill I do, I just take the rumors with a grain of
salt. More than likely, people just figure since DeLorean owned a
plant in Utah, he must have been building cars there.

Jack, Mine idled like this at one time because the Lambda system was looking
for the right mixture. Yours may be different, but that what it was. Coils
don't normally do that kind of problem. They will slowly weaken over years or
open and the car dies abruptly.
