I too stopped by the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn MI to view the Giorgetto Giugiaro exhibit.  It was really cool, but I was disappointed that John Z. DeLorean hasn't been inducted into the Hall Of Fame yet.  Maybe we can help get him elected by contacting the HOF.  The link to their contact page is http://automotivehalloffame.org/about/contact.html .  If Preston Tucker is deserving of membership, so is JZD.

I once left my DeLorean parked somewhere in Amsterdam for the night.
The next day I noticed a thin black stripe on the drivers side door.
Turned out a local idiot had used his ballpoint to scratch my car. The
ink from the ballpoint was easily removed, and the scratch is in the
direction of the stainless steel groove pattern, so it doesn't show. I
was prepared for this when I bought the car, still it dissapoints me.

It is extremely unlikely that your mixture setting (CO) at the air metering unit (mixture control unit) has suddenly gone out of tolerance. From your description it sound like you have a problem in the idle speed circuit. Do not attempt to adjust the CO mixture. The hollow plug you are referring to is the CO adjust access hole. This hole should be closed. If the access hole has been unplugged for some time and the car was running OK previously leave the hole as is.

I've got a question about the air metering unit. I haven't been able to get my car started
at all this week so I went out fooling around with it this morning. Heres what I found. It
wouldn't start again so I took off the air filter cover and pushed down on the air metering
unit and then tried to start it. It started right up but wouldn't keep itself running unless I
gave it gas. As long as I gave it gas it would run but as soon as I took my foot off the gas
it would die about 2 seconds later. I'm guessing that the air metering unit controls the fuel/
air mixture. Anyone know what's going on and what I might take a look at to fix it's problem?

My shift lever snapped off right where the roll pin goes through it.  It

I can't see this as a common occurance, has anyone else experienced this?
I'm currently running with it welded.  It seems to work okay but I'm just
not sure if it will be as strong.  I will be getting a stainless fluid line
to see if that helps so until then I've really been babying my transmission.

really like doing it!
well i have a civic, and when i worked at TedBritt Ford, i took a new
mustang on demo for the weekend. so i left my car out near the detail shop.
Well, when i came back, my WHOLE CAR had vinyl protectant all over it. i was
pissed, to say the least...that stuff is a bear to get off paint! Well, the
dealership reimbursed me for my purchases in paint cleaner and gave me the
mustang for the week.  The car is back to its normal look now, but the paint
looks better than ever!

Just a lil horror story...

Joe,

You don't have a franchise in CA...it is human behaviour world wide...usually driven by jealousy of you and/or your possessions (sic) or hatred for some reason.  I live in a nice neighborhood in your basic big house as I have a bunch of kids...we get broken mailboxes, spraypainting, etc. to the degree I let no cars sit outside and keep them in my office garage.

There are two common causes to the problem you are describing. There maybe a problem in the fuel enrichment circuit which is easy to detect in that the frequency valve will buzz full time after engine warm up.

The second problem may be an out of tolerance CO mix adjustment.

  Hello everyone,

I need some advice for my car: I had the Cat replaced by a pipe a
couple of months ago (which is legal here) to get a little more
  performance out of my car.
This DID do the trick, not much, but noticable enough. The car was
behaving beautifully when I got it back from the shop untill about
three weeks ago. When Idling you can smell some unburned gasoline
  from
the exhausts (and no: I'm not kneeling down to notice) and I get VERY
frequent backfires. I even get them when taking my foot off of the
accelerator at as little as 1500rpm.
This backfiring is nice when you want to impress your 7 year old
cousin, but that's about the only "pro" I can think of: it is not
  supposed to be this way...

just a coincidence.

[MODERATOR NOTE: Announcement OK, but don't start up a BTTF thread.]

I know this is a little off topic but I thought I would try to pass this info on to everyone on the DML.

June 30 - July 1, 2001 there will be a toy/sci-fi convention being held in Shreveport, LA.  Several actors from various movies will be there along with "Biff Tannen" from Back to the Future.

The merchandise department from www.bttf.com will also be there with a booth setup with several Delorean and Back to the Future related items for sale.

If anyone is interested in going and would possibly like to meet up or stay in the same hotel please email me so we can make arrangements.

For more info on the convention visit http://members.aol.com/toyshow/shreveport.html
You can email me directly at stevedmc(at)charter.net

I know this even is so close but lets try to team up and possible bring a few deloreans to this BTTF related event.

See ya at the show,

Subject: Dead Pedal Install

Well I finally got up the nerve to install my DMC Houston dead pedal.  I
had some problems figuring out how to make the rivnuts scrunch up in the
hole.  After a couple of inquiry e-mails to James and some trial and
error it worked just like he said.  I am a real novice but I was able to
do this install in about 20 minutes!!

I first pulled back the carpet and taped the template onto the
footwell.   The drill size if 3/8" but I started with a much smaller one
as a pilot.  I then removed the template and used a slightly larger
drill bit until I got up to 3/8".

Next you simply press the rivnut into the hole.  Warren had sent me a
longer bolt to use as the smaller one for final installation doesn't
give you quite enough room for the job.  You then put on a regular nut
and metal washer on the bolt that will act as the "anchor" when
tightening.   Place the dead pedal over one of the rivnuts to be
tightened.      Thread in the long bolt enough to get a good grip in the
rivnut threads.   Wind the nut down onto the face of the dead pedal with
the metal washer touching the dead pedal face. This will leave you a
nice long piece of bolt sticking out into the footwell area....You'll
need this!!  Use a vise grip or someother wrench to hold the bolt in
place at the very end of the bolt.  Then take another wrench and start
to slowly tighten up the nut that is touching the dead pedal face (with
the washer in front on it)  As you start to tighten it feels like it's
stripping, but it's not.  The rivnut is scrunching into place and
shortening.

Once it feels fairly tight repeat the same procedure on the other
rivnut.  you may what to switch the dead pedal around so to give you the
room you need to get in there.  Since this isn't the final install it
really doesn't matter.   After both rivnuts are tight you then have to
cut your carpet to make room for the dead pedal to slip through.   Once
you do this, install the shorter bolts that come with your pedal and
tighten it up to where it feels good.  It may give a little more but
don't worry the rivnut is in there pretty good at this point.  I didn't
cinch it up too much as it felt tigh enough

As for the "feel" of the pedal...Well, it is GREAT!  It makes a world of
difference in how far your foot extends into the footwell.  I felt more
secure in the driving position.  If your thinking of getting one I would
recommend it.  Let me know if you get one and have any problems!

Subject: hesitant DeLorean

After washing my DeLorean the other week, I took it for a drying off drive.
The car felt funny and sputtered a little during acceleration.  When it got
up to around 3000 RPM's it was fine.  It cruised along at 70 MPH with no
problems.  I assumed something in the engine compartment had gotten wet.

Another week went by, and I took it out again.  I had the same problem, so I
check all the sparkplug wires and all were sealed tightly to their plugs and
the distributor.  I checked and found no signs of water in the plugs wells
either.

I took the car out Saturday morning and again it hestitated during
acceleration until 3000 RPMs then it once again steadied out.  However, while
cruising the interstate, it began to sputter and jerk aa little at 70 and 75
MPH.  It didn't doi it all the time just sometimes.  The car also idles a
little rough, I mean the car shakes.  The tach shows it idling around 1000
RPM, but the engine isn't running right as the car has never shaken before
during idle.

I'm wondering what the problem is.  Is it possible that it's the primary
pressure regulator?  I'm trying to get her back in shape to go to the ETDOC
meeting at Biltmore, so I don't have but a few weeks to figure this out and
get the car fixed.  Any suggestions from the list would be greatly
appreciated.

Even without the production of the DeLorean, JZD should be in the
Automotive Hall of Fame for the GTO.  The man behind the production
of the best muscle car of all time ought to deserve some recognition.

I got mine with an order of speedoparts I had to get anyway from PJ
Grady. There were no instructions with it, but I had allready been
familiarised with the procedure through email AND my father is quite
experienced with rivnuts, he even has a special too for them.

The only thing that made us install it twice is that I "fitted" the
pedalposition with the door open, not realising that my knee could go
more outward without the armrest on the left. When we finally had it
installed it turned out to be too close to me (too far "up").

To avoid unneccesary extra holes we ended up making a small bracket
to get the pedal in the right position, using the previously drilled
holes from the wrong position. Now all I have to do is reinstall the
thing...

I realise this was our fault, since I didn't have the instructions I
don't know if it allready is in there, but I woudl like to warn
everyone that IMHO you should find the right position with the door
closed!

Brian, I would look in the plugs wells again for signs of water, Then under
the distributor cap. Condensation can stay under there for a while also. Make
sure the plug wires are pushed down ok and all are on the plugs correct. On a
couple of cylinders it's sometims hard to see in the holes to make sure  they
are on the plugs or off to the side.

Hello
I was driving down a freeway in Minnesota in the DeLorean, with my dad in the
passenger seat, when I look into the rear-view mirror to see another DeLorean
behind us. I kind of look again thinking it might be some reflection off
ours, but I wave, and this guy driving the DeLorean waves back. I think this
is very weird because this is Minnesota, and well.....I don't know. We drive
side-by-side for about 30 seconds and had to go to an exit ramp.

Just wondering if the people in the car are on the list.....The MN license

Hi Gang!

Deb and I (and the kids) went to the Eyes on Design Car Show this afternoon.  We actually got to meet Mr. Giugiaro and he was kind enough to sign a few things for me.  Just curious if there was anyone else from the list there?

Ital Design actually had a tent on the grounds and the display from the AHF (Automotive Hall of Fame) was recycled but included more cars and models than what was at the exhibit.  I've got pictures getting developed tomorrow if anyone is interested I'll post them Tuesday on www.mydelorean.com in the PROJECTS section.

Mr. Giugiaro was absolutely fantastic.  Very, very cordial - he reminded me of how JZD was in Cleveland.  Super friendly.

Deb and I arrived late (Detroit Grand Prix traffic) and had searched for him for almost an hour to no avail.  We had pretty much given up and then out of no where...boom.  He was in a golf cart (with an entourage) saying farewell to one of the organizers way off to the side of the exhibits ....and about 10 feet from me.  They were trying to zip him off to a parked car behind the scenes (then to the airport).  I sorta screamed "Mr. Giugiaro?" in a stunned voice and motioned in the air like I was scribbling with a pen.  Instead of completely blowing me off....the whole gang stopped the cart and invited me and my family to get an autograph.   He signed both my Delorean poster (JZD's signed the same one in Cleveland) and a dealer brochure.  I told his entourage I owned a Delorean and "I LOVE this guy!" pointing to Giugiaro :)  They kinda chuckled and he asked me if the poster was my car....to which I said yes and they all smiled and said how much they liked seeing it.   The whole gang was very upbeat and friendly.  Needless to say it was the highlight of the day.

Madison still says her favorite thing was the hot dog and chips we had later...but hey...she's only three. :)

Can anyone say what the rubber cement gooey snot type glue is that holds the
"panel sealing" part # 106368 RH & 106369 LH?  Much of the original glue is
worn out on this part from previous door repairs, and I would like to get it
sealed back on there the best way possible.  And the best way means that the
glue isn't real permanent so that someone can get in the door again without
tearing the seal up.

The last several times after I have washed my car, water inside the doors
trips through the door panel and onto the windshield and car interior when I
open the door.  I suppose that if my "panel sealing" were better sealed then
I wouldn't have this problem.  Comments anyone?

Tom,

I have heard that dead pedals are preferred by drivers with shorter legs and
not needed by driver with longer legs (like myself).  So I am curious if you
are of the long or short legged variety and if you feel this influences your
preference.

Also, if your DeLorean were an automatic, would you still feel that you get
any benefit from a dead pedal?

Start with the most obvious place, the battery! On most Deloreans the
battery strap is missing or not used so the battery could have shifted
and loosened the connections. If it really bounced maybe you shook
something loose inside the battery and now it's bad. After tightening
the connections (clean them too) check all of the big heavy cables,
the ends should be clean and tight. Have the battery tested and if
it's over 4 years old suspect it is bad. Check the belt going to the
alternater and if you still have the Ducey consider upgrading.

Subject: Re: Leaking fuel distributor

The fuel distributer is supposed to be an "unserviceable" unit
assembly. In reality it can be disassembled but there is a metal
gasket that once used (crushed) it isn't supposed to be reused. If the
unit is leaking from there it can be reused if you are VERY careful
with it and don't bend it. Spread a THIN layer of silicone (sensor
safe of course) on both sides and tighten REALLY tight. If you suspect
a gas leak be EXTREMLY careful as a small leak can be invisible as the
fuel comes out under high pressure and if warm can vaporize
immediatly. You won't see it but can only smell it. Once ignited it is
literaly a blowtorch and will destroy the car quickly if undetected.
