Had the headlight problem with a 2000 Chevy Cavalier I was trying to
fix for a friend. After having the problem for about a week, it went
away. Took the car in, but the dealership couldn't figure out what
was wrong. Plus to replace the capsule bulb you have to remove both
an access panel, AND the entire light assembly with the side marker
lamps. A good design if you're a Goodwrench mechanic looking for job
security!

Used to know a guy who owned a Geo. One day he got a letter from GM
telling him to bring the car in for a recall. Turns out the SRS
module was located under the cup holder. If liquid spilled out and
onto the module, there was the posibility of firing the air bags.
Recall turned out to be a plastic cover for the unit.

CarRef=U68

There are ALOT more recalls for modern cars then most people realize.
I feel safer in my 20 year old DeLorean then I do modern cars. And
based off of what I've seen and experienced with other vehicles, I
still consider Lucas to be far supierior then other electrical
designs.

Robert is right here, I remember a while back my car didn't have the
passenger side cooling fan, I managed to get a hold of a previous owner of
the car.  I had asked him a few things about it, and he told me about what
had happened to the radiator (it blew  and the fan cowl that holds the
cooling fans broke, and the passenger side cooling fan fell off).  Well sure
enough he had it still, and he offered to send it to me, all I had to do was
send him the cost of shipping.  Since the originals are well over $200.00
each, I was very grateful that he sent it back to me and now its back in
place where its supposed to be!  Happy ending, isn't it?  :)

To Eurofest attendees,

you may be interested to note that "Dusty" the barn find Right Hand Drive DeLorean has just passed its MOT test this morning ( an annual test required when a car is over 3 years old)  always an anxious time for any car owner!

She passed with flying colours!  Dispite not having a cat fitted its emissions were virtually nil! Brakes good, lights all working including the mandatory fog light.

Registration later this week, NEC next week, Eurofest in a month!

Mileage now up to four and a half ! ( that's miles BTW, not thousands!)

Best regards

The very first thing I fixed on my D!
Simply slide the latch on the engine cover out a bit twards the edge.
You may need to losen the nut's on the latch first. The latch sould
catch with little effort once in place.

I have worried about that for sure!! In my '94 Geo Prism (aka
Toyota Corolla with some GM components) the airbag module is under
the center console. I once spilled a cup of coffee on the center
console and the airbag light came on. Luckily it didn't go off
(Whew!), but about two months later I got the recall notice in the
mail about airbags going off when liquid was spilled on the center
console. As for the rest of the electrical system, I don't worry, the
car was hit by lightening and the only consequence was a fried
alternator. So British electrical systems are alright in my book, as
they are usually easy to troubleshoot.

Have you given any thought to drilling and tapping the hole to a larger

Today I had the oil changed in my DeLorean at the Honda dealership where I
work.  We removed the drain plug only to find it completely stripped with
only about one or two threads at the top, it's a wonder it stayed in.  So
now I need a new drain plug.  Upon further inspection of the oil pan, the
threads inside are in almost the same shape.  Looks like I also need a new
oil pan, which leads me to my big question.

I experienced the same on my car, it became even worse when I adjusted the enginecover
forward so it would pop up free of the rear fascia.

DO NOT TRY TO REPOSITION THE LOUVRE if it hinges up free of the T-panel,
when you do adjust it, make sure you are not alone: this is not as easy as it looks. (I
hate to say this, but I know this from experience...)

When I had my Enginecover opening the right way I tried adjusting the catch on the cover,
but doing so I broke it in three pieces.
I wound up making a new catch from a couple of small bolts (M3 of M4, can't remember),
some nuts and a small strip of metal.
I made it so that the strip is biased to the back of the car, so the latcht DOES catch,
works like a charm, I only have to soften the edges so I won't cut myself on it AGAIN...
;-)

It it's obvious it isn't original when you see it, but I don't mind:
my car isn't original in a lot of places,
some by my own doing, some were that way when I bought it.
These are the things that make my car "MY CAR"...

DML,

The 1981 vehicles had a production change to the lower door still seals.
The seals on the 1981 cars are "L"shaped.
The 1982 & 1983 door seals are different in design, they are "U" shaped.

These seals are attached on the lower part of the door, near the door
lights.

Does anyone have a new set of lower door seals?

Yeah, I had that, would catch but wouldn't really latch (a good bump would see it
lift free and drop back down).   Got a length of threaded stock (any hardware
store), of slightly larger dimension (probably #8), put it in the vise and bent it
to have about a quarter or three-eighths inch (didn't measure, eyeballed it)
longer "grab" point than the stock unit,  it now latches perfectly.  I thought I
might dip it in dipping plastic so it wouldn't look like a piece of threaded stock
but that hasn't happened yet...put a little black tape around the catch point and
it looks good for now.  The original is really mickey mouse, very thin stock and
poor adjustment slots...now if someone would make a real one that would fit and do
the job...!

It is not easy to remove the oil pan. The standard repair would be to
install a thread repair like a Heli-coil or some such item. If it is
really mangled up sometimes you can go to the next larger size.
Another option would be to remove the oil pan, have a GOOD welder weld
up the threads and retap. To do this involves unfastening the engine
mounts and jacking up the motor for clearance. It sounds like you also
need to buy a new drain plug and don't forget the copper gasket and an
oil pan gasket if you remove it.(Not a simple or pleasant job!) Get a
drain plug adapter and don't let a grease monkey strip the next
one. This usually doesn't happen often but what might have happened is
the origional plug got lost (fell in the oil can) and they substituted
a plug with the wrong (american) threads. Although they got the plug
in the threads were stripped so when you took out the plug you were
screwed.

Subject: Re: Oil pan woes

Before removing the oil pan, I would suggest trying to tap the hole
to a larger size and using a "Time Sert" thread repair. I know that
they make sizes that fit Spark plug threads so I am assuming that
they will have a size to fit the drain plug thread. This way will be
allot less work, be very reliable, cheaper and easier. The thread
insert kit (contains the tools and the insert itself) run between $30-
$50. I would recommend staying away from the HeliCoil brand. They
tend to distort and even "thread out" as you are installing the bolt.
I used the Helicoil to repair the treads for the water pump and found
it coming out the other end as I was tightening the bolt (since there
is no back to the threaded hole where the water pump bolts go into,
just a continuos hole all the way through). If that happens with the
oil pan, then you may risk having to take of the oil pan off to get
the insert out. The TimeSert inserts have a lip that prevent that
from happening and are a solid sleeve (the helicoils are just a
Stainless steel wound "wire" type). The Timeserts come in a varity of
sizes, I am currently using it to repair the threading on the heads
for the exhaust manifold bolts.

Walt, I can answer your question as to why Porsche can use "drilled" rotors!
The rotors that are used by porsche are actually cast with the holes already
in them.  This causes the metals grain structure to go AROUND the holes thus
eliminating stress concentrations caused by drilling THROUGH the grain in a
rotor that was cast without the holes.

As for whether or not to use cross-drilled rotors...for daily driver, maybe
not, but for a mostly show vehicle...YES!  major aesthetic points in my book.
Project Delorean will sport cross-drilled, vented rortors.

Everyone knows about the two American Express gold plated DeLoreans, and the
very last DeLorean made, using the spare set of panels. But I doubt there
are more than a handful of people who know about the fourth gold plated
DeLorean.

In 1983-1984 it was advertised for sale in Hemmings, and I inquired about it
then just out of curiousity. I received a photo and a copy of the
"spectrochemical analysis" dated March of 1983 done on the car. I kept the
copy of the report and recently spoke with the company that did the
analysis.

The VIN that I have from the report is SCEDT26T7BD001542, and the owner at
the time was Dr. Michael Feldman of North Woodmere, NY. Efforts to reach him
today has been unsuccessful. Anyone live near there want to give it a shot?
