I KNOW of about 25 Speedo's with 140 mph (on the RHD cars) and a couple
with the kilometre equivalent..
.I Think the other 160 / 170 mph was simply a conversion..i.e. doubling
up..or halving, modifications to the internals and adding a re-calibrated
face.
But I sure some one on the list knows for sure.

This one comes up sometimes, at least once since i've joined the list last
fall. like others have said and will say, there is a lot more to this than
you might think. it will probably never happen unless we can get some real
money behind it by someone who wants to donate it to the cause i.e. filthy
rich car collector like Jay Leno.
as for the firestar 500, the original dies have nothing to do with that car.
have you ever seen pictures of it? the car is a lot more than just a
'revamped original DeLorean'.
also, i think it would be easier to just have someone donate a car to a
machine shop or something who has experience in this field and they can make
some new dies for a much lower cost. however, the time for this has not come
yet. parts are still available. maybe when they're all gone, THEN this will
finally happen.
those dies are gonna sit in Davey Jones' locker for a LONG time, i think....

Was talking with Deb at PJ's today about the 140mph mod that is out there
and she also informed me that they sell the 170mph. She said that it matched
the other gauges in the car when it is installed. I would have to say
that,most likely these Deloreans have the 170mph mod installed.

I have one of the 170 mph speedo's but it was ordered from DeLorean One
years ago. There were never any DeLorean's that came from the factory with
the 170 speedo. It is an aftermarket product, but it is VERY nice and looks
stock. If anyone is interested in seeing a pic of it, just drop me a email.
The reason I changed it is b/c everyone that would look in my car would say
"it only has 85 on the speedometer??!!??" Since I put in the 170, now I get
"WOW! It has 170 on the speedometer!!!!" Yea, it won't get anywhere close
to that speed, but I think it matches the car better ;-) (IMHO of course)

Subject: The #1 problem driving a DeLorean.
With all the recent talk about the thrill of driving a DeLorean, and how it
effects our emotional state.... I wanted to point out the one BIG frustration
with driving any "regular car", or even worse a low profile sports car like the
DeLorean.
SUV and Minivan drivers that just make it impossible and frustrating to dive
within any distance of them. The parking lots in my area are lined up with them
making it also impossible to pull out of parking spots without risking someone
driving in to you with another one of these monster trucks!
Have others had the same experience in sharing the road with SUV's and Mini
vans??
I found this web site... Much of it is tongue in cheek, but there are a lot of
serious points made about SUV's, good reading if you are a SUV driver or in the
market to buy one.
I am in no was associated with the above site...

The Northern California DeLorean Motor Club is proud to announce a new fall
DeLorean Car Show in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Our home base for the event is the San Ramon Marriott. There will be a
welcome reception on Thursday night and we plan to keep a hospitality room
available throughout the event. This will give owners a place to meet at any
time they wish.
San Ramon, California is approximately 25 miles east of the city of Oakland
in the San Francisco Bay Area. The San Ramon Valley has long been considered
one of the most desirable areas in the Bay Area because of its scenic
beauty, good climate, suburban charm, and proximity to the Bay Area's major
business centers.
Friday morning we will caravan from the hotel to the nearby wine country for
tours and lunch. Route, prices and details are still being developed.
Our Friday night banquet is at the prestigious Blackhawk Auto Museum, an
affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Admission to the Banquet includes
touring the museum and admission to the Smithsonian RMS Titanic Exhibit.
Dramatically displayed in the dining area will be a DeLorean, a Tucker, and
a Bricklin. This will be the first time these three cars will be seen
together in one lineup. Special guests and speakers for the evening are to
be announced.
Saturday is our car show at the Marriott. We will have one or more levels of
judging. There will also be tech seminars for both cars, a dealers room,
displays, plus more.
Saturday night we'll have our awards banquet at the Marriott with trophies
for the Show's award-winning entries. There will be raffle prizes for both
banquets.
Sunday we may do another drive and/or a brunch depending on advance
interest.
Joining us is Bricklin International and the California Bricklin Owners
club. This combined event will familiarize us with the unique qualities of
each other's cars and allows us to use our combined numbers to further the
quality of the event.
This will be a great driving event for people on or close to the West Coast,
and the Show, combined with the many interesting opportunities this region
of California offers, makes this a worthwhile event for those who fly in
from around the country. This is an event like those held in Cincinnati and
Cleveland and Ken Koncelik has been our consultant, lending his expertise to
the show.
A printed flier and registration form will be available to DeLorean and
Bricklin owners and enthusiasts around the country starting in May/June. We
will use our website and the popular mailing lists to keep everyone informed
of progress on the event.
It will take us a few more weeks to get the details all worked out and to
plan our driving tour(s). We're working to keep the prices as low as we can
by soliciting companies and groups to 'sponsor' the events.
Hotel reservations are already available and you can call the Marriott now
at (925) 867-9200. Make sure to mention the DeLorean/Bricklin Car Show to
get the special $74 a night convention rate. Show prices and registration
information will be available soon. Rooms are limited and you should call
now to reserve your room at the Show rate.

Robert and all who have had this idea,
What a great idea. Yes, the delorean should not be purchased as an
investment. But imaging if you will(never going to happen,But) you are
selling your car and this guy just loves the "D" but has never worked on one
or does not "Trust" the local machanics. As part of your handing over
documents you give him a book on what can/will go wrong and the basic steps
to fix and or look for for salutions. This small book would have saved me
many hours of working on my car over the years and money since I was not
always near a "D" machanic.
It does not need to be an end all for fixing the car but just a simple
examples of what to look for if you have problems.
It has already been mentioned that the manuels for the car are outdated and
in some cases just simple wrong.
To say that to metion these problems is bad for the car is like saying I do
not need to balance my checkbook since I know how much money I spent and how
much went in. You still need to know where you stand!
Ever car has flaws, some more than others. If most if not all the common
flaws for a vehicle have been identified and recorded, it makes owning the
car that much easier and better for all concerned.
The suppliers of parts and machanics for our cars have made a living doing
just that. Which is why we take them to them. For profesional advise and
help. As was mentioned before, they have all taken great pains to put out the
best information that they have and the best parts that are affordable.
My 2 cents for what its worth!

Forget about the dies! It is a lot less work to repair a mangled panel
then to recreate a new one. Besides the dies you would need a press
big enough to put them in and they aren't cheap. A good "Metal Man"
can straighten out something most would consider junk. Right now
enough panels are around so it isn't worth the time but someday it
will be worth repairing anything. In the event someone MUST recreate a
panel it is done on what is called a "Bucking Block". This is
esentially a wooden form and the panel is beaten over it. This is how
prototyping is done and you can make a small number of panels before
you destroy the mold. If anyone has damaged panels I encourage you to
save them because as I said at some point in the future it will be
economical to repair instead of replace so there will be a larger
market even for damaged panels. The potential market for panels is
small and diminishing but there is always the "totaled" car that still
has some value in the undamaged parts. It will never be profitable to
make NEW panels for the Delorean as the demand is too small. If a car
is damaged the owner always has the option of using filler and
painting the whole car. In recovering the dies there would also be the
ugly queestion of legal ownership.

I don't have the electrical qualifications of the others in the debate... but
then neither do most of the rest of the list members, no doubt. Rule of
thumb I'd think would be: never disconnect an electrical cable under load,
(drawing or discharging current.) Some might be able to do it safely, but I
don't think I'd want to, especially standing on the nice damp ground
alongside my driveway. No offense to those who have the expertise to do it
otherwise! But I've gotten buzzed more than enough working "carefully" on
live wiring in my house or business. 8-*

I was taking mine out for a drive the other day and was looking at the 170
MPH speedo. What is nice about it is in my 5 speed, when you are at about
55-70 MPH, the speedo reads right in line with what the tach reads i.e. the
needles are in the same position in both speedo and tach. This makes for a
nice visual as you cruise along.
