Brian,

If you look at that picture again, you will see a shadow on the right
side of it thats a plastic bottle.  That picture is a picture of what the car
should look like should it ever be come reality.  It was sitting on a table
where Kathryn De Lorean was talking about the new car and the watch they are
selling.  There was NO DMC-2 De Lorean at the show.

One more time - PLEASE DO NOT OFFER ADVICE UNLESS YOU ARE POSITIVE IT IS
CORRECT.  As anyone who has worked on these cars should know by now, you do
NOT have to remove the console to get the radio out, nor do you have to
remove the radio to get the mode switch out (as Mike correctly and more
tactfully pointed out).  Walt, we appreciate your enthusiasm, but incorrect
advice just confuses other newbies, and once stated becomes part of the
archives that we are told to search for answers to all our problems.  This
kind of advice, in my opinion, exceeds the "more than one way to do things"
category.  Its way too complicated, unnecessary, and incorrect.

Moderators, if you feel I am out of line with this comment, feel free to
censor me.  It won't be the first time, and you won't hurt my feelings.

*****  Moderator's Note  *****
This is an example of how the list eventually corrects itself whenever
repair advice is given.  It's a good idea to wait a day or so before
starting a complicated procedure to see if it gets confirmed or
another, easier process is described.

Hey all-

Add Tennessee to that list because I am going!  I made my

another DeLorean owner that has been hidden. He lives here
in Knoxville and is planning to attend EuroFest 2001 as

Hank,

The rear bearings are very easy to replace but it requires a press and a
very good set of snap ring pliers.  DO NOT try to do it without a press...my
father tried and damaged one of my hubs.  I then went out and bought a press
to do the job right.

Hmm... looks an awful lot like the 1985 Buick Wildcat concept car, with a

this one.  I'll bet that V-12 would be nice to drive, though!

Andy

Have you checked the fuel pump is OK?

The next thing is to check out the Control pressure. Get a pressure gauge
and connect it in line with the CPR (the line which comes from the top of
the fuel distributor). Check your workshop manual (mine is not to hand) but
it explains how to check it out. The pressure should be around 40-50psi cold
and 80psi warm.

This pressure controls how far the air flow sensor travels and when cold
travels further for the same amount of air (running rich)  There are 2
pressure to check the gauge open (ie allowing fuel to flow through) and
closed (ie stopping the fuel at the gauge). This basicly is what the CPR
does, open when cold (lower pressure), closed when at opperating temp.

The CPR has a bimetalic strip with a electrical heater attached. As it warms
up it stops the 'control pressure' fuel returning to the tank. Also at the
bottom of the CPR are 2 vacum connections( one supply that is 'T' ), one
goes via a delay valve. The vacum comes off the back of the intake manafold
and goes into another valve(in the coolant tube), when cold supplies the
vacum to the CPR and when warm it supplies the ignition distributor. When
you open the throttle this increases the vacum causes the bimetalic strip in
the CPR to be 'pulled back' momentarily allowing lower 'control pressure'

Hope this helps some, and is understandable. Most of this has been said
before.

Everyone experances low point and think they have unsolvable problems but
you will get there in the end. We in the DeLorean community are very lucky
to have such helpful vendors, i have spent many hours on the phone with DMC
Joe, Don Steger, Rob Grady and Steve Wynne. How they get time to help on the
phone and run their business ill never know but thanks to them all. Plus
with the DML you will get there.

I think that this is an excelent idea. There is a start up guide for
Bricklins that I've found on the internet. The guide takes a more
common approach at the what most owners encounter; Bringing a
vechicle out of storage rather then maintaining a currently road
worthy one. Rather then just an FAQ about the DMC-12, or a what to
look for type of guide, this could be designed for the person who has
just acquired their car. i.e. Rather then "Fuel Contamination is
common for a stored car, watch out for it.", make it more like "Now
that you've got the car, prepare to replace this, that, and this." It
could also point out things such as common knowlege of the car,
various warnings and cautions of the car, key items that should first
be repaired or replaced in bringing the car back, safety options,
etc...

Sounds like a great idea. I for one would be willing to help out any
way I could.

Well...I just got my DMC back from Rob Grady yesterday.  Only had it a week,
and it cost me over $3K, but you know what?....IT WAS WORTH IT!  Rob fixed
so many things on the car, it performs about 80% better!  Due to depletion
of funds, I can not have everything done that Rob suggested, but I am
looking forward to completing the work he told me I need.  The car should
rock!

Anyway.....

I got my first real taste of driving a D when I got it home yesterday from
Long Island.  On the way home, there was a guy at a traffic light a car
length in front of me.  He was craning his neck around SOOO hard to check
out my car.  I LOVED IT!

Then I went out last night, and was waiting for a friend in a parking lot.
A family walked by the car, and the 10 year old son was transfixed on the
car.  He asked his dad what it was, and he said "That is a Delorean...a
really cool car"  Then about 4 minutes later (after my friend had arrived) a
group of 3 boys was walking by, and one goes "Hey!  that's a.....ummm...car
from back to the future"  I corrected him by offering him the name.  He
asked if it was mine, and I told him yes.  Their next several comments
were.."Cool!" "That's a cool car" etc...

My friend told me not to "roll in it" so much....but I love the
attention....IT IS SO MUCH FUN!

Subject: Re: Hello list

I totally agree with all that you say, my thought is that there should
be secondary phases also.  What you need to know the first days and what
you need to know after that, etc.  The first days, when you jump into
the middle of it, there are certain things you need to know right then.
When you get into your car specifics and what's most likely to be the
answer to a given problem, another set of answers should be in place,
like for poor hot starting go to the accumulator first.  It should be a
consensus of opinion.   Much could be written and in place for whoever
needed that particular help,  problem with the list is, first of all, a
consensus of how something should be done, like removing a door panel,
should not have to keep coming up and then get lost in the archives.
The very best thing about the list is some brave soul relating how he
did something then "corrections" immediately forthcoming to complete the
picture.  The most complete, most correct interpretation, could then be
put into place.  The problem with the list is that it's very large with
lots of input and your information may not appear right away but you
have the problem right now and can't find the answer you need in the
archives.  Over the 'phone helps if you want to question a vendor, I
don't do that, partly because I don't want to intrude and partly because
experience tells me It's unlikely I can get an answer that way anymore
than I can give one that way (ever call tech help anywhere on any
subject and see if you got a satisfactory answer?  I quit trying that
too).  Some with good answers don't offer them, because of the force
that will be brought to bear by those who don't agree, and there are
some very vocal versions of that.  We need the experiences and answers
from every corner.  There is that thing, I remarked about it a time or
two, when you put anything out there you become a target, some folks
would rather not take those shots, if you'd e-mail me privately I'd
appreciate it, that's if we can get this thing off the ground.

Case in point, how to remove the radio, I don't remember who gave out
the first (unfortunately incorrect) method of removing it but he was
taken to task today for so doing.  The shop manual tells you how and
it's not very hard but it would be good to have that in place where you
didn't have to look it up.

Talk to me, I'm listening.

Group,
If you are going to replace your radio the first project you are going to have to do is figure wire color coding out.  I gave John Hervey a call at specialTauto and this guy said OK here it is.  Check Johns webb page out, he has drawn in a radio diagram with proper color coding for craig radio.  The tricky part was to figure out the common wires, easy when radio is out.

The new radio sounds sooooooooooooo much better.  I'm giddy as a school boy.  Thanks John.  Hummmm maybe I should change the speakers too, enough for one weekend.

Ohhh by the way thanks goes to Darryl at Specialty Automotive he talked me through the AC mode switch replacement/rebuild.

Thanks, Jim

Subject: Cooling Fan Fixes

Hello,

I'm looking to fix my cooling fan problem and am interested in your
opinions on the various options.

First off, my cooling fans are always on because with my engine swap,
my mechanic did not like that they were going on only at a fairly
high temp.  Since he couldn't find a temp sensor that would turn on
soon enough he just shorted them permanently on.  From a cooling
perspective this is great.  But, from what I've heard here I'm
guessing this is not good because it heavily taxes the electrical
system.

So, I want to fix this. I've read the info about PJ Grady's Fanzilla
and about SpecialTAuto's Fan Fix Maxi Brute.

Being a novice, I'm not sure how much their operation overlaps or
doesn't.  I'm also wondering if anyone has tried both and which you
prefer.

Lastly, I'm wondering what is the correct temperature that the fans
should come on at assuming a good coolant temp sensor.

thanks,

Subject: more info on my car...

Hey All,

today i took off my control pressure regulator and opened it up.  it appears
to be quite clean, and the screen is clear.  i only unscrewed the bottom four
screws and checked it in there.  i blew air thru the vacuum nipple on the
side of it and i could see the diaphram moving in and out.  so i know that i
have good vacuum in there.  i do not want to take the gasket off in there
because i think that would be very difficult to fix and put in again!!!
should i take the regulator apart any further to inspect it more?

i checked out my frequency valve - it's buzzing like a hornet.
also checked out the cold start valve.  upon turning the key, it sprays out a
nice cone-shaped stream of gas - so i guess that's not the problem, right?

also, i need to check out my warm up regulator, according to one of PJ
Grady's technicians.  i can follow the vacuum hose diagram but it seems to
just go to the control pressure regulator.  where is the warm up regulator?
it is not listed in the parts manual, or at least i am not looking in the
right place or looking for the right term.

at this point i am assuming that the bozos at Amoco had a bad fuel pressure
tester.  most everyone says that pressure could never be that high under any
circumstance, especially since i tested my fuel flow and i had almost exactly
2 liters in one minute - which implys that i do not have any blockage.

so now:
let's think of it this way, with these symptoms:
1. hard cold starting. gets easier the more you run the engine, IF you can
get it to start...
2.  crappy idle, lots of fluxuation in RPM's. dies sometimes, even when warm.
3. definitely too rich of a mixture.  engine seems to be flooding every time
you try to start it. lots of black smoke from tailpipes while trying to start
the car.

so..... any ideas?  i will be calling up PJ Grady and DMCJoe again soon too.

Les,

Sounds like a great idea to me, although I'm afraid I'd be a leech as I
have no DeLorean of my own to gather any knowledge from.  However when I
get mine, I'd gladly contribute anything I found to be useful.  :)

With car not moving you eliminate wheel bearings, fan is a good guess, possibly
fan bearings or something interfering with fan rotation (you know, the shroud
slipped or a rodent got in and can't quite keep up).

I think to start this off, you should compile a list of FAQs, and then have
different people choose to write something up to cover it.  Maybe even team
people up to work together.  Have each subject an MS Word document, and then
post them on the net somewhere.  I would be willing to take pictures with my
digital camera to be included in the documents!

Lets start making a list of topics!

Just because you are getting fuel flow from the return line doesn't
mean it isn't restricted. You NEED to get a gauge setup on the car so
you can find the source of the problem. I think you will find it to be
either a resticted return line or a stuck Primary Control Pressure
Regulater. The warm-up regulater is the control pressure regulater on
the left valve cover and the primary control pressure regulater is on
the side of the fuel distributer. If you assume the test you performed
gave you 2 liters of fuel when you should have had 3 then you would
know with certainty that the line is blocked. Unfortunatly I do not
know the return flow rate so I don't think that is a valid test. If
the system pressure is too high it can only mean that the Primary
control pressure regulater either isn't working or the return line is
restricted or blocked. I think the regulater you took apart is the
control pressure regulater (warm-up regulater) and I don't think it is
the source of your troubles. Failure of this component usually results
in hard cold start conditions and trouble with acceleration or fuel
enrichment.

Andy,

The control pressure regulator is also called the warm up regulator.
