Hey guys,
i think my problem with starting lies in my fuel pump. i opened my trunk and
there's murky water inside the boot with all the connections underwater.....
hmm. :-(
can someone tell me if the pump is a gravity pull pump or how does it work? i
can't seem to find anything about it in my workshop manual. if someone could
point me as to where it is in there, or anything i should know about taking
my pump out, drop me a line.

KPH (also graduated to 150 MPH in smaller figures). The indicated speed

Hi List,
I recently acquired a 82 DMC-12 5-speed that was sitting in storage
for ten odd years. While in storage there it got a case of rat
infestion. which brings me to my question:
There is a (more or less) clear hose running under the dash near the
steering wheel that has been chewed through and is hanging. Any ideas
as to what this hose belongs to or does? I can't find the other end.

Hey all,
many thanks to everyone who replied while i try to determine why my car won't
start lately.
i checked the coil spades - good.
checked the inertia switch - plunger is down
tried starting with accelerator down - nope, didn't work.
tried to keep on cranking. still no start.
so next i decided to check my fuel pump... hmm..... as soon as i took the
fiberglass panel away, i could see a possible problem - the fuel pump boot
had about one inch of water on the inside of it. the terminals were totally
immersed in murky stagnant water. ugh!! it was kind of a sludge - tiny thin
sticks, black decaying stuff, and icky water. i would bet that this has
something to do with my car not starting?
surprisingly, my fuel pump, boot, rings, and hoses are all in excellent
shape. perhaps a previous owner changed them all within the last couple
years? it looks like the pump has been underwater for quite some time
though. the top is pretty rusty, and so are the connections. however, beyond
the boot, the pump looks brand new. and fortunately, the rest of the parts
are pretty clean. maybe the water helped short out my pump? or something
like that?
well i took the pump out and i am busy cleaning it up. my tank appears to be
quite clean, by the way. i can see the bottom where there's a mouse-trap
looking yellow thing down there.
would this fuel pump situation be consistent with my starting problem?
before i removed the pump, i tried to sop up the water and start the car. as
i cranked, i could hear the car sound like it's sneezing every few cranks.
like the car is SO close to starting, but it just can't quite make it. what
do the pros think?
should i just replace my pump itself? or is it possible to clean it up?
more importantly, where could the water have come from?

Awesome vehicle, every review I have read was positive. Didn't sell very

only 14,257 being made between 1992-1997.

Something wrong there, door light should be out with wire pulled, might have
crossed up the wires. Buzzer shouldn't be sounding off unless you left the
key in the ignition. Wires are in pairs, make sure you have both halves of a
given pair going to the same switch.

Ok, I have an original "un-used" leather shift boot. It has never been
installed on any DeLorean, and the original plastic piece that holds it in
is in perfect shape without a scratch on it. Since my car isn't a concourse
car, I'd like to offer it to someone who has a concouse car and can use it.
I need a new shift boot as well, so I'm just going to get one of the
aftermarket ones with the metal piece. So, if someone would like to swap me
a new aftermarket boot for my NOS leather shift boot, I'd be up for that. If
nobody wants to, I'll just put mine on Ebay and sell it so I can buy the
aftermarket one. But, I'd rather help someone out on the list if I could

It is not a good idea to put oil on any object that friction can damage,
and is in an area prone to getting dirty. Dust, Grime, Road junk etc. can
all collect in the oil causing the antenna to jam, more that it would on
its own. This goes along the same principal of oiling any sort of
key/lock. This oil can cause the dirt to build up inside the lock,
damaging it. I have never pulled apart my DeLorean's power antenna, but I
imagine it is very similar to an 85' Toyota, which I have dismantled.
There was a plentiful supply of lubricant in side the main chamber, even
after 15 years. If the motor jams up, turn the radio back on and run a
clean towel down it, this will remove the grime, and restore it to
regular working order.

Whatever works for you, different perspectives are a valuable part of the
list. The antenna sections have a wiping action as they telescope, this
tends to remove any collected grime but leaves the film of lubricant. I also
WD-40 lock cylinders, have done so since before the first D was born and have
done the same to my unit, the lock cylinder was difficult to operate. Works
fine now, if it acts up again it'll get another shot.

Les,
The sound you are describing indicates water damage to your horns. This is
common in the DeLorean due to the close proximity of the horns to the
ground.
If your horns are factory originals they do have the tone adjustment you
described. In some cases after disassembly and cleaning you may be able to
return your horns to there original sound. On the other hand it is probably
more cost effective to replace them with either factory originals or generic
replacements available at most auto supply stores.

Subject: more updates - my watery fuel pump
Hello all,
the responses and help just keep coming in!
last night i plugged in my cleaned up and newly rewired fuel pump into my
harness and turned the key. it still works! and sounds strong too. so
since it works upon ignition, that would indicate that my problem does not
lie in my fuel pump or any other fuel system components up to that point.
i.e., my relays aren't fried, pump works.
today i am going to take the pump to a machine shop and see if they can
determine that the pump is actually PUMPING and not just making noises. if
that's ok, then i'm going to drop the pump back in the car and see if the
engine starts. if not, well then i'm all out of ideas and i'll be back on
the computer typing to the DML!!! (after i try calling Rob or DMCJoe....)

Hi there,
Well, it's official. My next car is going to be a Delorean. First, I have to
come up with the money (should be set in a few months), then I'm going
shopping. In the meantime, I need to learn every little thing about the car
that I can. I've been researching web sites over the past couple of days and
will continue to do so, but I wanted to hear from you nice people as well.
My first question is, what are the Delorean's problem areas? In other words,
what can I expect to be replacing right away, why, and what are approx.
costs? I've read a little about the coolant bottle, the extra length of hose
to prevent air in the system and a problem with the door locks, but that's
about it.
Secondly, what do I need to watch for when looking over a potential car?
I'll probably end up buying one that's not very close to me, as you don't
just find them for sale in the local paper every day. The only thing I can
think to do is have the owner email me a bunch of pictures; I figure I'll
end up buying a one way airplane ticket and driving my new toy back so I'm
going to have to decide remotely. I'm on a number of other mailing lists and
may be able to find someone to go look at a car for me, which would help.
Third, I assume it's fairly easy to find most engine/mechanical parts? Can I
just walk into any auto store and buy consumable parts for it (air/oil
filters, o2 sensors, gaskets, brake rotors/pads, etc)?
Lastly, I've got a question that isn't 100% Delorean related: How do you
take care of your leather? I've got a new truck with all leather interior
and have no idea what I need to do to condition it. The dealership has no
idea; they told me to use "water or armor all." I figure if anyone would
know the "correct" way to do it, you would.

DML,
At a recent meeting to plan our March get together I was offered a used
DeLorean door. Since I do not have a need for the part, I would like to offer
it to anyone on the list who would need such a part.
The damaged door was from VIN 7014. This car belonged to another DeLorean
Owner in the Maryland area. The dent was caused when a contractors work truck
slowly backed into the door. The DeLorean was repaired by Antwerpen
Lamborghini in 1987.
The former owner would like to sell the used, damaged door or take it to
the landfill/trash dump. The damage is on the ridge of the passenger door,
near the rubber side strip attachment area. Based on the information provided
to me, the dent can be repaired, and looks repairable. Please feel free to
make an offer if you are interested.

A few posts ago I read this remark and had to stick my nose in,
"The internal part that goes "click-click" is plastic. It probably broke
inside, and believe me it is not worth the time to fix. There are many ball
bearings, etc., inside. So more than likely you will have to replace the
stalk mechanism. $165.00"
It only cost me around $15.00 to buy a switch unit from a Mini car in a
scrapyard (or junkyard as I think you refer to them in the USA) don't you
think it is worth trying to fix it, when you take the unit apart you will
see how basic it is.
As stated it will most probably be the small plastic component which is
broken but the dip/beam switch unit from a 1985 + Mini car is exactly the
same Lucas unit. As I said in a previous post the mini unit can not be
transplanted onto the DeLorean as the hole for the steering column is too
small but the actual components within the switch, including the plastic
part which is causing your problems, are the same.
I think I remember there being 2 ball bearings & 2 springs, but they are
under very little tension and will not spring out if you take it apart
slowly, also you will have spare springs & ball bearings from the Mini
switch unit when you disassemble it.
I saved myself $150.00 by doing this and it has worked like new for 7 months
now. if your going to buy a new one what have you got to loose? it only took
about 20 mins to take the two units apart and I had it back on the car
working within the 2 hours at most.
Just out of interest has the person who wrote the above actually taken the
unit apart?
