I would like to dispel the myth that it is almost "impossible to repair the
fuel sender unit" if you take the unit out and take it apart which consists
of one nut, then you can see just how simple the workings are. My fuel
sender stopped working and it was a spring that had snapped in the sender
unit it probably took about 1/2 an hour to remove it from the car solder it
back together and replace it in the car. That was 4 months ago and it has
been working fine since. Remember if it doesn't work what have you got to
loose by taking it out and trying to fix it yourself. I am sure that the new
Tankzilla units are much more reliable but I.M.H.O it is always best to try
and make use of what you already have rather than just replacing it.
If you were to rate on a difficulty scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most
complicated I would rate putting your key in the ignition as 8 and fixing
the sender unit as 10

The part you are referring to is part or part #19 Crossgate Mounting
Bracket. Part #18 Stiffener adds additional support to reduce flexing of the
crossgate shifter cable.

Most PRV overheat events result in a blown head gasket. Excessive
overheating will cause the heads and or block to warp.

What is needed to replace the factory radio with a new one?
I was told that this is difficult to do, and if not done right, the original
radio can never be remounted. Are there step by step instructions out there
somewhere on how to do this?
Also, do I need any special hardware or mounting brackets to put in a new
radio? If so, where can I obtain them?

What is a "refurbished" Delorean and by who? As is the case with most
things in life definitions are important. If a "refurbished" Delorean
means cleaned up, not all wearable items replaced, then NO a
refurbished Delorean is just a cleaned up car with most of the obvious
problems repaired. There is nothing inherently wrong with an origional
after all thats what you start with to get a "refurbished" Delorean
anyway! Ask just what is done to make a "refurbished" car as opposed
to getting an origional. Is it Ed? Then I think the price is what
makes it a "refurbished" car. Maybe it's a frame-off restoratation?
There is no standardization of terms so make sure it is SPELLED OUT
especially if there is any warranty. Get everything in writing just
in case you are dissappointed and don't get what you bargained for.

I am the one who made the "almost impossible" statement. Like you, I repaired
my fuel sender myself. Within two months its operation was intermittent and it
failed completely within a year.
I think I repared it about six more times. Yes, the mechanism is so simple that
it can be repaired without any explanation, instructions, or diagram. The
problem is not its complexity but its construction. The original fuel sender is
not very reliable.
James RG, if your original sender has better than intermittent operation I think
you should count yourself lucky. But perhaps the later units (like yours) were
built better than mine.

For future referance I would suggest you scan your keys into your
computer (both sides)and make them to scale(1 to 1)(You can also use
a copy machine),so that in the future if your keys get lost or
stolen,you can print it out,and have a locksmith use that printed out
copy in which to make new keys using Volvo Blanks or Delorean blank
keys.OR you would be able to email(the scaned copy) to DMC of texas
or D1 to make sure their "spare" keys were correct. Just a
suggestion.That is what I did.

James, Now that the cat is out of the bag about sending units. I
repaired my sending unit about a year ago and it's still working
fine. The main problem in the one I had was moisture sitting in the
bottom of the unit an no where to go. It corroded the contacts and
one wire came loose due to the corrosion. After cleaning three
contact points and a little soldering and a modification it's been
working fine. So for about a year. Another car I have doesn't have
the screw in the bottom of the sending unit and hasn't given a
problem. They are fixable, just how long it will last, nobody knows,
but it was a lot cheaper than the alternatives. Will put the inside
on the web site soon and the contact points to look for and the
modification.Yes, If anyone want me to look at theirs, the email me.

Many years ago when the supply of original fuel senders was exhausted I took
on a research project to develop a repair procedure for this very important
device. I used three senders using different repair techniques. After six
month's of tests and trials none of the senders held up. In my opinion
repair of the original sender is not suggested. This device, which sends an
electrical signal to the dash fuel gauge to indicate the amount of fuel
remaining in the tank is of marginal quality. Its design flaw is not the
electrical design or circuit, it is the materials it is built of. Most of
the
unit is made of plastic with weak electrical components and connections.
Consider yourself lucky that you were able to resurrect your sender but I
don't agree with your statement:

As for as repair of the sender; just attempting to take it apart and putting
it back together is a challenge. I have no disagreement with an owner with
the knowledge, mechanical ability, and proper tools attempting such repairs,
but I would be very cautious about suggesting that this is an easy repair
for the average "shadetree mechanic", especially when you consider that the
procedure involves a "live" electrical component that sits inside the fuel
tank; remember "flight 800".

The vacuum line probably got disconnected from the back of the mode
switch. You have 2 options. Use a flashlight and go in from behind
under the driver's side dash to reconnect the line. Or, you can
remove the radio and go in from that hole in the front, but then you
run the risk of knocking it loose again when you put the radio back
in.

Sounds like the Mode switch either has to be rebuilt or replaced. I
remember seeing somewhere that Rob Grady sells the mode switch diaphragm to
help rebuild it. Its a part of this "HRC Series Parts", give him a call
(1-800-589-6224 or 631-589-6224 ) and see what he can do.

I bought two blank keys from DMC in Houston, and I'll
be damned if I can find anyone to copy them...
Anyone have any ideas?
Walmart says they cant because their machine is made
by Axxess, and they wont fit, Sears wont because they
are afraid they will screw it up (I even told them i
wouldnt hold them liable for a screwed up key, but
they still wouldnt touch it).
I heard locksmiths stick ya for price, and after
spending $30/key, I dont wanna spend another $50 to
get them copied...
any help appreciated,

Sounds like you have a bad Mode switch. They are rebuildable. I know

I know it is early, but this will give all of you (that are interested) time to plan and also, there is a deadline for registering. There is a British Car Show coming up this May 5th. Our DeLoreans will have their own class too. The main problem and reason for signing up early is that last year, there were so many cars that showed up, they ran out of room! This year they have changed things around to limit the number of cars. Only those that pre-register will be allowed to participate any we all have until April 10 to do this at a cost of $15. The show takes place in Townsend, TN. Last year there were 4 (or was it 5) DeLoreans that pre-registered and only 2 of us showed up! We need to improve on this greatly. Anyone that is interested or needs more information, let me know. I can also provide scanned images of the registration form so you can pre-register in time. Come on! Let's show all of the other makes that appear there that we can show in just as large a group.

I would not be afraid of a competent locksmith. Did you actually ask
one for a price? I had mine done at one - I think it cost about $2
each with me bringing in the keys. I would NOT trust it to some
teenager at Wal-Mart or wherever - I've had many bad keys cut at
department/hardware stores, I don't bother with them any more.
