Hello everyone,
I just wanted to publically thank, Richard Weissensel,
of IL for helping to make my dream come true. I posted
a message on the bullitin board looking for a project
DeLorean and in a day or so Richard contacted me, we
spent a week discussing terms, and like he knows at
some points it seemed like it wouldn't happen. But I
am proude to say we have reached an agreement, in a
yesr I will be the proud owner of VIN 5386. I just
wanted to thank you Richard publically for being a
great guy and helping me realize my dream, when the
clouds semed darkest Richard helped me to make it
possible. I am going to see the car and Give Richard
the downpayment towards the end of the month beginning
of April. So I will have pics to share with the group.
I also plan on posting pics of the restoration. I
could go on for pages telling everyone how great
Richard is for helping me but I'll refrain from that
for now. just for now though. lol!
VIN 5386 will in a years time be moving to PA with me and I
will comence the restoration at that point. I am very
excited, haven't slept mutch in the past week. I'm
doing all kinds of research and stuff. this is been a
great dream of mine, it has ment so mutch to me to own
a DeLorean. Thank you Richard! and Thank you to the
DML for allowing me to post my add, without this group
I would never of got contacted by Richard, and Iwould
never of had this oppertunit. I thank you and VIN 5386

I just got a few of those scotch bright pads for the SS panel re-
graining, and I must put in my two cents here... Not only did it
remove some of the normal scratches that might form near the trunk
area, but I also re-grained several other sections of the car, and
wow! The panels are sparkling!
I love this car for many reasons, and the fact that you can remove
scratches easier than I could have ever imagined really takes the
cake.
I have a hard time understanding how people can criticize the panels
as being hard to take care of, especially after my experience.
Some of the people that I have spoken to about re-brushing the
stainless were a little uneasy about doing it. I just did steady,
firm, with the grain strokes. My suggestion would be to do strokes
that go the whole length of the particular panel you are working on;
don't stop in the middle. I also got the handle for the pads, which
must make things easier.
I was all ready to go for a weekend spin, but unfortunately I'm part
of the New England crowd.... Oh well.

There is little to be gained only by "balancing" the internal engine
parts (the factory has already done that). If this was done as part of
a comprehensive plan including "blueprinting, porting, polishing, and
CCing" and perhaps improving the breathing ie: intake and exhaust then
you would see a difference. Things to look for on a "D".
reenforcing brackets on the front sway bar
inertia switch by bonnet release with white mark
cotter pins in ball joint nuts
fan fail relay or jumper
plate over throttle spool indicating throttle recall
None of these things are too important, that is to say the general
condition of the car is paramount, everything else can be taken care
of. If the car was "beat" but had the updates what good is it? It is
much better to start with a fresh car then a "beater". As far as tires
everyone has opinions, best to drive someones's car with their tires
and see for yourself.

One way to tell if the car has had some updates, is to check the relay
compartment behind the passenger seat. If the blue plug (Fan Fail relay) is
still in place, chances are, it hasn't had updates done to it. Most owners
from what I've seen, update the relays before they usually do anything else.

Hi DMCers,
Today I discovered some *&^%$#@ ('fatherless-one') stole the ignition key
from my stored DeLorean. This is the car I will be restoring so now a new
ignition will go in her for security!
How do I find out the existing/original ignition key ref.# ... is there any
record of key#s to Vin#s (00780). I need an ignition key to unlock the
steering lock to roll her into a container for shipment to USA. I have a
second key for her but its the door key (with light) and doesn't fit the
ignition.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Why Did I Install This Engine?
My old engine overheated and was unsalvagable. This should answer the
other question floating around regarding what happens when you
overheat a DeLorean. High temperatures and aluminum don't mix.
Anyhow, I'd always intended to put in something more powerful. John
Lane managed to convince me that a newer, even firing engine would be
better. I could talk about all the power or that eventually I'll put
in forged pistons, a torque cam shaft, and a turbo or supercharger.
However, the DMC Houston engine project is getting lots of nice power
too and is "more stock". The real reason why I switched is because
the thermometer in the newer engine is in the engine block instead of
in the coolant like in the stock DeLorean. Why does that matter? Well
when you lose your coolant your temp gauge doesn't show the engine
overheating. This is exactly what happened to me. A small but key
flaw in the DeLorean PRV, in my humble opinion.
So there you have it. My car is a daily driver. I like the smoothness
of the engine. I like the power. I like that I can trust what my temp
gauge says. I love owning my DeLorean!

I am the owner of a painted DeLorean. I just read your email and could not believe what I read. There are many ways to strip the paint but BRAKE FLUID is not one of them.
For about 50.00 bucks you can buy an enviormentally safe paint remover. I have thought about removing my paint but for the amount of money it involves it is not worth it. After paint has been removed a regraining of panel needs to be done. Panels are very thin so this is an iffy proposition. I have done some reasearch on this so email me back if ya need some tips.

I understand ignition lock sets are NGA (not generally available.)
Try DeLorean Motor Center in Garden Grove, CA. The phone number is
714-554-6794 plus whatever prefix you'll need to call the USA from Hong Kong.
I heard Don just happens to have a couple of them. Other D vendors might
too... haven't needed to research that personally!

Ben,
I have installed the proximity sensors that you are talking about from Dave
Sontos. They work fantastic! But they are rather expensive. When the
doors are closed, the sensors draw about 0.5mA each. In laymen terms, that
is just a fraction of what a clock or stereo preset memory would draw. They
look great and are far more reliable than those old switches that tend to
jam and bend and kill your battery. The kit also comes with a kill switch
for turning the lights off when leaving the doors open for extended periods
of time. I installed the kit myself, too. If you can figure out how to
install a new stereo in a car, then you can follow the instructions that
Dave sends with the sensors.
Consider the cost of these sensors to be cheap insurance against a dead
battery.

Do not use brake fluid to strip the paint. There are lots of paint
stripping chemicals you can use to strip the paint off. But be warned
that if you do strip the paint, it is going to take some work to get
the Stainless panels back to their original grain. Also you may find
some "bondo" fixes under that paint. If you want info on how to strip
the paint down and regrain the Stainless, talk to Dan (Danrc30) he
has done this with great success. Check out the pictures he took
after he did it in the vault.

For my 2 cents and a slight scare:
I picked up the front of my DeLorean using a floor jack with a wood block
for padding. I sat the car down on a pair of heavy duty jack stands, both
adjusted to the same height. They were supporting the car on the clamps
that hold the sway bar bushings. I push the car slightly as usual to make
sure everything was solid, and it appeared to be. I crawl under the car
with a mechanics creeper and knock one of the jack stands loose. I thought,
"What the @#$%!"
Anyone have any explanations? Otherwise, the car seemed solidly supported
by just one stand in the front, but I wasn't taking any more chances. When
only picking up one side of the car, I always now try to have 3 points
holding it with the other side of the car supported by wheel chocks. I also
keep a cell phone on my belt.
I used to use a set of ramps several years ago, but quit because I had
trouble keeping them under the tires as I drove up on them. They tended to
scoot forward with the car and/or move to one side. They might make good
'jack stands' for under the tires, but I would never try driving up on them
anymore.
Sometimes when starting a cold engine, it is easy for something stuck under
a rear wheel -- a piece of cardboard, sheet metal, dry wall, plywood or
whatever -- to come flying out like an axe blade. For that reason, I'm not
fond of ramps or anything else under the tires except the floor. Also be
careful when putting things under a car tire to get a car unstuck from soft
ground.
Also a note about putting a car on concrete blocks -- A relative of mine was
killed doing this. It doesn't matter how you orient the blocks. Just
however you try to use them, don't use them to hold up a car.

Subject: Trunk Release Cable
Ok, I've got a new one. After I had speakers mounted to the kick
panels in my car, the trunk was unable to open because the speaker
was in the way of the handle. The fix for this by the guy who
installed the speakers was to loosen the handle so I could "bend" the
handle out far enought to clear the speaker. Long story short, the
stress placed onto the cable from this, and from when the handle kept
falling off snapped the cable right @ the handle.
So my question is this: Does any one here have any ideas as to 1.
Extend the bolt out a little farther. or 2. Know of an assembly from
another vehicle that I could use on the D. In other words, something
that will stay above the box that I would pull straight back on
rather then being connected to a handle that hangs. Sort of like a
choke cable.

The reason you were able to move one of the jackstands is that the
Delorean has a VERY stiff frame. If you are not on level ground you
might only be supporting the car at 3 points! As always double check
the car before you go under. If you are really paranoid also keep the
hydralic floor jack under it as back-up. I don't think supporting the
cat at the sway bar bushings is a good idea, it is the crumple zone, a
better place is either under the lower control arms or the frame to
either side of center just in front of the fuel tank.

I live in the Chicagoland suburbs. My name is Justin. I'm almost 17 years
old. Are you going to bring your DeLorean? I remember the Cleveland car show
last year. I was in a small little town called "Canal-Fulton" that's near
Canton, in Ohio. I was there from June 11-14th if I can remember correctly. I
was staying there because of my grandma visiting family. I wanted to go to
that car show so bad. The DeLorean are the car of my dreams. I love it w/a
passion. I got to see the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, and it was the greatest
thing ever to see, other than a DeLorean. I did watch the webcam you guys had
though. I think my grandma actually talked to someone and they said that the
car show was for DMC owners only. That meant to me that, I would have to be
part of a club or something or own a DeLorean. It would be an honor if I went
to the future car show in Memphis. I told my friend about it a while ago and
he said we would drive down there. That's about it on that story. I can get
to Chicago within 20-30 minutes. Any reaction to anyone else living in the
Suburbs??
Bob Brandys- I know you live around here. I saw you at the Taste of Lombard.
Will you be there?? If not, can you meet me somewhere in Lombard or around
that area so I can see the car of my dreams? I'd give anything to see that

Jerry Rine former KAPAC parts manager is able to locate keys for 1981
vehicles. The last telephone number I had was 740-366-5587.
Evidently, the initial DeLorean Motor Company had spare keys for each
1981 vehicle. These keys were kept at the regional offices of DMC. If the
owner was in a situation requiring replacement keys, they could send a
replacement, etc, etc.
The last time I saw the keys was the Columbus DMC sale in 1997.
