Subject: Water In the Fuel Tank?
Hi All
My car had been playing up a bit after sitting for about a month without
use, anyway it eventually just spluttered and had no power. I was looking
into cleaning the fuel tank as it sounded like fuel starvation, whenever I
pressed the accelerator the car stalled. I found to my horror that the fuel
had water in it, I siphoned the fuel out and it had about a 3 pints of water
in it!, needless to say this was obviously a major contributor to the
problem. But my main question is how the hell did it get in there ??? would
it have gone down the filler cap?, has anyone else had a similar problem?
obviously I will check all of the seals before I install the tank again. Any
ideas would be most appreciate, as obviously I don't want it to happen
again, it was a good job I ran the car or the engine may have corroded and
seized!

Instead of using a tow dolly (only raises 2 wheels off the ground) or
spending the hundreds of dollars on flat bedding/towing your new
purchase there is another alternative. What I did when I got my D
(was not drivable at ALL) was I went to the local Uhaul place and
rented a full car caddy. I'm not talking about the ones that just
prop up the front wheels (or rear) to tow, you actually push/drive
the entire car, all four wheels, onto it. The cost was like $40 to
rent for the day! If you don't have a hitch on the back of your car,
grab a buddy who does and tell him you'll buy him a beer :).

It happens. Cars do get damaged in emissions tests. Make sure they don't
put the front wheels on the rollers, for example :}
There's no particular hazard to taking an emissions test with a DeLorean
that wouldn't be experienced by any other car, other than that the
emissions testers will not know what to do with it. They will probably
not be able to get the "hood" open, as well :}

According to Mike Loasby, former chief engineer at DeLorean, the Stainless
frame was the preferred option but the "cold weather" thing made them afraid
of cracking / law suits.
There next choice was hot dip galvanising, which is excellent at rust
prevention, but bungs all the holes up in the frame. That's how we ended up
with epoxy coated steel.
BTW Rolls Royce cars of the 20's and 30's had a high nickel content in the
steel chassis. It is most unusual to find a rusty one.

There are stories like this here in Illinios back when the testing
first started (IL uses a roller test). These were not specific to the
DMC. The operator made some grievous error - like putting the wrong
end of the car on the rollers. For this reason they can't test full-
time 4WD cars for example. Just keep an eye on what they are doing.
Actually the more common stories are clutch problems since driving a
manual is such a lost art.
If your state does not do a roller test, there should be no danger.
Again, feel free to watch the operator and make sure they know what
they are doing.
BTW - in Illinois they CANNOT do the gas cap test. The DMC cap won't
fit the test fixture.

Subject: Leak in automatic transmission
Has anyone had a leak in the automatic transmission coming from the
fluid return cooler hose. The hose is not leaking, it is at the
fitting that is screwed into another fitting that is in the
transmission. I removed the hose and fitting and retightened it and
put thread sealant so it wouldn't come out but now it is driping out
between the tube and the fitting. Does anyone know what might do
this. I could buy a new new cooler return hose but that doesn't seem
to be the problem. It's where the pipe and the fitting meet and are

I wish I could answer those questions, but instead I will pose
another question: I know the gentleman who is making these SS frames
needs to have several sales at once to get the price down. Has the
group every ran a poll to see who would be interested? I've been
blessed with a really good frame, but I would still replace it with
SS if the price was right. I say that more than ever now, because I
was jacking the rear of the car up by the frame the other day and I
found a few flakes of epoxy on the jack saddle when I brought it back
down.... oh @#$%! Now whenever something like that happens, I have to
get under there and POR-15 it. Would be nice to eliminate that
problem once and for all with SS.
On a side note, is it bad to jack the car up by the frame? I sure
feel better lifting it by the cross member by the engine, rather than
at the 'recommended' jack points.

Hello all,
Could someone give me a link or send me a list of all the original dealers for DeLoreans
by state? I'm mainly interested if there were any in Indiana but am still curious about all the
states also. I posted this question a while back and only got one response and that one was
that there was list that came with ever car when it was sold new. I'm sure that there was but
unfortunatly I've only had my car for about 8 months and that list seems to have been lost
somewhere over the years. Can anyone help me out?

There have been many horror stories associated with emissions dyno
testing. A favorite was trying to dyno a 4 wheel drive, it took off
because the front wheels were still engaged. There are many dangers
from inexperienced people doing the testing to improper procedures to
defective equipment. The destruction of the transmission is the least
of your worries. If the trans fails it is probably because it was
slipping to begin with and testing at full load for an extended
period
wipped out the clutch plates. On level ground at light loads the
trouble may not have been noticable but was there already waiting to
get worse. The Delorean transmission is no more prone to damage then
any other automatic assuming that it is in good condition. In New
Jersey they have suspended the dyno testing temporaraly, our Govenor
is becomming the head of the EPA so I guess they didn't want too much
bad publicity. I had my Delorean in the dyno test last year and I
wasn't too thrilled about it (and they wouldn't let me watch) but I
was told "Either let us test it or we will fail you right now!". It
passed but the interesting part was watching them try to test the GAS
CAP. The tester could't seem to find the right adapter so several of
them came over to help. They eventualy got it to pass by only putting
it halfway on, then the green light on the tester lit! Another little
thing they do in Jersey, with the driver's door open the tester gets
it up to about 20mph and hits the brakes on the brake indicator to
test the brakes! I really don't like that but again if you won't let
them do what they want they just fail you. I have to look into
collecter plates.

This is definately the way to go. Rent a car trailer. Stay away from the
dollys if at all possible. A trailer is much safer for your car and better
to have all the wheels off the ground especially when buying a car you have
never driven. I too rented a U haul trailer when I bought my car. Towed it
from Michigan to NJ in one day. The U haul trailer works great. It has
surge brakes and puts no strain on the tow vehicle. Hope this helps
