I just finished watching the C&D DeLorean segment that Rodger got to do, and
I loved it, too! I think Rodger did a great job. A half hour later, "My
Classic Car" was on TV and they showed a lot of footage from the 1997
Autofest in IN, I believe. There were about five DeLoreans at that show, as
well. I believe they interviewed a young man I met at the Nashville show in
'96. There was one part where all the owners were in their cars and they
all opened their doors at the same time and said in unison, "My Classic Car
will be back after these messages!" (or something to that effect) and the
show went to commercial. Was anyone on this list at that show? It looked
like an awesome show to attend. A lot of great vintage automobiles. I
think it might be airing again on Sunday at 11:30AMand 4:00PM (Mountain
Time). I don't know if it will be the same segment, but look for Autofest
'97 and that's the one. The Car and Driver is airing at 11:00AM and
supposedly at 9:30PM on Sunday (Mountain Time). A great website to find out

A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped me out with my defroster switch. I
finally got it back together and I'll know Monday if it works. I'm also
interested in a custom speedo. I believe I'm going to buy one of Marty
Maier's 140 MPH Silk Screened decals (if that's still okay with you, Marty).
It looks great in the picture on the Mid-state Delorean Website. (Marty-
does it really blend in with the rest of the dash, or can you tell it is a
decal?) I'd also really like to see pictures of the 160 MPH and 170 MPH
Speedos. Is there any way anyone could scan a picture of their speedo into
the vault?
Dan (Danrc30) - where did you get your 160 MPH speedo?
Chris Parnham - where do the UK cars get theirs? Are they in KPH? or MPH?
Aren't the numbers on the 160 and 170 speedos a little cramped? Or do they
look good? Can anyone scan in their speedos or maybe send me a picture? Or
does someone have pictures on their website?

What Dave read off it true but let me add a little.
#1. Do the fans come on when the air conditioner is turned on.If so
then proceed forward, or the system could be protecting it's self due
to no freon.
#2. If not, then you may have a defective otterstat/temp switch.To
test, unplug the temp switch and jumper with a wire or paperclip.
If you don't won't to do that then, in the heated mode when you think
the fans should be running, just lightly tap on the pipe where the
temp/switch is. It may just be stuck open.
#4. Between all the info you get, it all may lead back to the Fan
Fail relay or the Fan relay or it could be just a wire unplugged from
under a relay socket. If so. We can help.

The square rod, which is actually a short length of cable, is an intragetal
part of the drive and is not repairable. You have several options including
have yours refurbishing, or purchase a new unit. Check your favorate
DeLorean parts dealer for a details.

As of Nov 10, VIN 1074 has a new owner.(Fine time, 2 days before the
first snow storm of the season in Minnesota!)
I have been following the postings here for the last couple of months
and in spite of my early apprehension and negative comments from some
friends "in the business" I am by now convinced that this is not just
an unusual car but a FINE car, so I took the plunge. With this type
of back-uo available it will be hard to go wrong.
Original owner since -81 to -97. Last owner also meticulous, but only
drove it about 500 miles and evidently never got deep into the
technical side of ownership. (So far I have only driven it about 20
miles.)
Some minor details:
- Doors sag and struts need replacement.
- Battery allegedly weak.
- Original coolant overflow bottle (plastic)
- Cooling hoses etc. replaced 3-4 years ago. Don't know
if "authorized" replacement parts were used. System looks like a
plumbers nightmare!
- Trip odometer push button loose.
- Bushings/seals on most pulleys replaced last year, possibly
necessitated by broken heat shield.
A few quick questions at this time:
- Right front door torsion bar was adjusted (by Bruce Benson) a few
years ago. In a phone conversation Bruce mentioned that he recall
that most of the splines were gone, except for about 1/4 inch. Should
a replacement torsion bar be high on the priority list?
- Car starts fine but once I had to turn the key a couple of times,
(including jiggling the shift lever and clutch)to get the starter
running. Is there a starter interlock in the 5-speed gerbox system?
- After reading a lot here about the importance of and evident
complex cooling system I wonder if an overhaul here is also needed?
Last owner told me when I first looked at the car that both cooling
fans were running all the time and I have since learned that they
shouldn't. Is a "Tankzilla" conversion recommended (rather than
dinking with each individual relay)?
- What are the dimensions of the heat shield? (Mine appears to be
broken off along the top of the mounting brackets and to the left of
the left mounting bracket, looking from the rear.)
- I received the original tires with the car, they are in pretty good
condition but are they worth saving?

traffic. not going fast, just normal speed) when i pushed in the clutch and
tried to shift, the stick just went loose and now it's like it's out of
place. you can move it around all over the place but it won't stick
anywhere. i'm stuck in 1st gear now (i think it's first. might be 2nd).
does anyone have a clue what is happening here?
just a note - i'm in fargo ND and the roads are all slushy and wet. maybe
that's a factor?
any help is greatly appreciated.

I've been wondering recently what most DeLorean owners do to
protect the car. Do you use an alarm, club, a combination, etc?
(Obviously I'm assuming 99% of owners keep them in some kind of
garage.) I guess my problem is that I live on a very busy residential
street in central California, where alot of cars get jacked and stolen (more
so in other towns than mine, but it's still California, you know?)
Basically, I feel like every time I open up my garage door to do
anything on the car, potential thieves are driving by and checking it out
(there's some scummier people in my neighborhood too...California
gang-bangers, etc.)
Now maybe I'm over-reacting, and my DeLorean is nowhere near as
nice as other ones out there (although someone who doesn't know
any better wouldn't care.) But I am concerned...is there any kind
of black market demand for a DeLorean? Obviously someone who's
going to steal one for personal use in pretty much any given area is
just looking to get caught eventually...I figure it can't be hard for
cops to spot one on the street if they are looking for it. But you
never know what some crazy person is willing to try. So I guess
my question is this: I do keep in garaged, (with the only entrance being the
garage door...but if you've seen Gone in 60 Seconds, you know how easy it
can be to open an automatic garage door) it's always locked, with a club
on, and behind it on my driveway I keep another car parked which
blocks it pretty well. Is there more I can do, or am I freaking out
way too much, even for my neighborhood? Obviously I know you can't
totally stop someone who's determined to steal your car...but what do other
owners out there do to protect it?

It sounds as though your shifter linkage has come apart. There are a rod
and a cable that transmit the shifter actions to the gearbox. It seems to
me like they've become disconnected at the shifter although it could have
come apart in some other place also.

If there was ice on the linkage, it could have added stress to it and made
it break. Road goo won't break it but cold weather might...

Sounds like you broke the pivot bolt that goes in the middle of the
shift linkage. If you're lucky it just came unscrewed.
You have to raise the car, it is in an oval hole in the center of the
frame. Easy fix once you find it. It is INSIDE the frame.
If you have the parts book, you can see it on page 4/2/0, the ID is
17, the part number is 110183 from a DMC place. Good luck with it.

You have a broken pivot bolt. This pivot bolt is accessible from underneath
the car. you will have to jack up the car. Take care to secure the car from
falling or rolling, once jacked -- since you will have to be under the car to
get access to it!
It is located on the chassis between the panel and it is close to the
passengers side. It takes 10 minute repair it, if you have the part to
replace it. If you don't have a the part. This part is available from
several DeLorean part suppliers. It is cheap under $4.00? You can also
fabricate one if you are handy or have access to a lathe to make one.
They do break due to the "soft material" that it is fabricated from. I have
broken two in 5 years of daily driving, so I drilled the last one and
installed a "hardened" bolt to as a substitute. So far so good going on the
second year with this modified one.

looking at my car and i dont have a garage (they

Hi,
Last month I posted my problem with my automatic transmission. It
turns out that no trans fluid was getting in, therefore none of the rings and
clutches in the tranny were being lubricated and burnt. Anyways, the
transmission was rebuilt and put in. Now heres my new problem, the fluid
pressure is set to 8 bars, everytime I do the test for the transmission fluid
that is recommended in the DMC Work book, which is reving your engine up to
2500 RPMs in drive, everytime I do that, it goes up to 8 bars then drops to 2
bars. The clutches are slipping, the engine revs up to like 3000 RPMs and I
only go 10 mph, I press the gas and I go really slow. I think that something
is wrong with the valve body. Thats just my opinion. Anyone have any ideas of
whats the problem?

I bought 1265 on saturday! Its got 30K miles, and some
problems, but i got a GREAT deal. It overheats (thanks for
all the suggestions), doesn't charge (alternator bad),
needs new tires, some/all gauges don't work correctly, and
passenger seat needs new leather. But i could spend
thousands on repairs (and probably will :( ) but will still
be well under the magic "20" rule!
It was my first time seeing a DMC in "real" life...Its
like no other car i've ever driven...Its going to take
A LOT of getting used to!
I want to thank everyone on the list for giving me the
information i needed to really research this car and
to give me the confidence that it can be a reliable
vehicle.
I'm going to have PJ Grady get her back to tip top shape
ASAP. Can't wait to get her on the road!

The valve body does not control the line pressure, that is controled
by the vacum modulater. When you are reading the line pressure it is
the output pressure directly out of the fluid pump. The main causes
for a low fluid pressure are the following:
low fluid level (air gets into the fluid)
bad pump (can't pump high enough pressures due to worn clearances)
A RESTRICTION IN THE SUCTION ie: a bad, or plugged up filter or maybe
you just put the gasket in wrong and are blocking the intake.
If you have driven the car at a low line pressure and slipped the
clutches then they will need to be replaced again. If there is
friction materiel in the pan again you wiped out c-1. Another remote
possibility is a restricted hose or the cooler is plugged up. This can
be tested by making a bypass test hose in and out of the trans. Do not
run too long like that or you will overheat the trans quickly but you
should be able to do it long enough for testing purposes.
