It is important to note that Jim Mateja, the columnist that wrote the
cited article, has a long history of being not exactly sympathetic to
DeLorean with respect to Car, Company or Man. The tone of this
article is typical of any of his columns mentioning DeLorean. He has
been a columnist here in the Chicago area for many years, and has
mentioned DMC several times in past columns.

Subject: repainting trunk & repair shop
Hello,
The previous owner of my car had the trunk all decked out with stereo
equipment(removed before I purchased car). It looks as if he painted the
fiberglass several times and now it is starting to chip and peal. I was
wondering what color paint I should use when repainting it. should I just
sand the old stuff down and paint over it?
Also, does anyone know if Dan Pfiefer Lincoln Mercury in Grand Rapids
will still works on DeLoreans. I called a while back and they said no. I
was just told by a former employee that they will now and then, just curious
to see if anyone has used them. From what I understand they were one of the
largest DeLorean dealers at one time. They had a huge auction to sell the
remaining cars I remember.(almost 25 I believe)
My DMC is going to a dealer on Thursday that has never worked on a
DeLorean before but the mechanic seems to loves Volvos and does great work on
my VW....Well, I gotta call the wrecker now. I bet I get a stupid Cocaine
joke........

Well, for what it's worth, the car has been getting some pretty nice write
ups in the Uk recently. But thanks the history the car has, and the common
misconceptions that many people, (and, sadly, journalists) have, write ups
like that will plauge us forever. No 'profesionalism' there, I'm afraid.

Subject: Delorean For Sale
I've decided to sell my Delorean I've owned since the mid 80's. Every so
often, I reluctantly offer it for sale. I created a website with pictures
for all that are interested. It has 3,000 original miles, 1981 Automatic,
pristine body, original leather still looks new and it drives great. I took
it off the road back in 1987. I drive it around the block once a week. I
also have the original cardboard cleaning kit that came with the car and the
original Goodyear NCT radial tires . Anyone interested can check it out at

Hey,
I am planning to do an oil change and I have a few questions. I am sure
this has been covered before, so please bear with me. This is my first oil
change since aquiring the car ~2000 miles ago.(I can't tell as I have a
broken angle drive). Anyway, the owner said the oils had just been changed
and the oil still looks golden brown--however, I am desperately hoping to
get rid of a valve knock.
The #4 valve is knocking. Marty and I adjusted the valves correctly and
rechecked--the car sounds MUCH better than before. However, the #4 lifter is
sticking, or something b/c that valve is noisy. I have tried additives with
no sucess.
So, I have heard of running a bit of kerosine in the oil for 5min at an
oil change to clean it out. Anyone heard/tried this? Marty, you mentioned
it. Can anyone give me a procedure. I am hoping that it will unstick the
noisy valve. If this doesn't work, I guess I am looking at replacing the
valve/lifter because I have tried everything else--i.e., the specs indicate
the valve is properly adjusted. Any comments?
Secondly, what is the capacity of refill of oil if I change the oil
filter? I know it is somewhere around 7qts.
Thirdly, I got a couple of cross reference filter numbers off the web.
Any brands you can recommend? I heard some interfere with the "pressure
sending unit". Of course, I have Marty's updated unit, so I'm not sure. Can
Marty or anyone out there help me? Thanks in advance.

Yup. It's normal. Actually the oil pressure isn't as high as the gauge
indicates. There is something of a mis-match between the sending unit and
the gauge that causes the gauge to read near the top of the scale when
above idle.
One of our club members took the time to test various sending units and
located one that will replace the factory unit and give correct pressure
readings on the gauge. You can check it out, along with other parts, at

Dear List Members-
As some of you know, I'm working on editing, correcting, augmenting and
updating the DeLorean manual series.
My immediate goal has been to build a technical library for the purpose of
research. I've also have spoken with and have committments from five of the
six leading DeLorean specialists and others who are willing to help as they
have time, either proofreading or donating articles they have on hand. (One
of the 5 wishes to remain anonymous out of concern for liability issues,
which is why you never see him respond in the DML. I've already discussed
that issue with my attorney.)
I've continued my quest for original DeLorean publications, since the quality
of the widely available copies is often not too great. Perhaps there is
someone out there who can help me with this- So far I have:
1. DeLorean World from the beginning, plus the separate reprint from the
first two years of DW tech notes.*
2. An original 1981 manual with assorted papers
3. Photocopy of an original 1982 owners manual
4. Reprint 1982 owners manual
5. Workshop manual and Parts manual (reprints) came with car
6. Technical Info Manual, original
7. Assorted original '81 Volvo repair manuals, including CO2 adjustment,
CIS, etc.*
8. Assorted parts bulletins- original,. including unpublished material
9. Reprinted Service Bulletins
10. Reprinted Tech Info Manual
11. Original Bosch Fuel Injection Systems manual including '81*
*Of course, DW and the Bosch and Volvo manuals are still under valid
copyrights and cannot be excerpted from unless permission is obtained, which
is probably unlikely to be granted. I know better than to infringe on a
copyright. They're interesting for background information, and would be very
useful if permission to quote was granted. So far, I haven't asked.
What you may be able to help me with is this: I need access to originals of
the Workshop Manual, Parts Manual, Service Procedures Manual, Technical
Owners Manual (NOT Tech. Info. Guide) and service bulletins. I realize the
likelihood of finding anyone willing to sell or loan any of these items is
slim. I also realize what they're worth. (Don't ask what I paid for the
original items I have obtained... I don't want to think about it!)
Nevertheless, if you can help with this, please contact me privately.

I am working on a way to measure the force of the torsion bars with
Rob Grady. By doing this simple test we will be able to determine if
the torsion bars are the problem, the struts or both. It will be able
to be done without the need to have a "new" strut for testing
purposes, in fact the only tool will be a ruler! It will also be
independent of temperature.

is still around. He was featured several times in the "E! True Hollywood
Story: John Z DeLorean" and I also saw him at the movies in the Detroit area
once. I felt like saying something to him, but as a PASSIONATE DeLorean
owner, I was afraid I would get out of hand arguing with him. Oh well.
As far as his career....Im not completely sure, but as far as I know, he is
still an automotive editor and commentator.

It is allright for a shop to use an air impact wrench with a very
important qualifier-ONLY torque the wheels on with a "torque stick". A
torque stick is a special extension that is calibrated to a specific
torque. Each one is a specific color and is to be used at a specfic
setting on the air wrench. If the shop doesn't know what a torque
extension is then don't let them use the air wrench. Their main
concern is not warpage or removal but having a wheel fall off. After I
go to a shop I take the wheel off and reinstall myself with a torque
wrench. Also don't just tighten 1-2-3-4. You should alternate and do
say 1-3-2-4. And don't forget to check the air pressure, most shops
are very careless and just assume everything gets #30 psi or whatever.
