The price for repair varies depending on the complexity of the procedure combined with the total labor time involved. As an example several common problem relate to adjustments inside the door. Labor times for internal adjustments range from 30 min. for a simple bellcrank adjustment to 3 hours to removal and replacement of the entire lock and latch system. If you have access to the car we can give you a couple of simple tests that may help to determine the cause of the problem. (followup) Dave, Go to DMC Joe's web site at http://store.yahoo.com/dsvstore/electrical.html and download the picture he has there of the relay compartment. It shows where the relays are. Try unplugging the 'cooling fans' relay and see if the fans shut off. If they do, then this relay is most likely stuck on. I know this because I once had to replace my relay with a fused jumper to get the fans to work at all. As long as the jumper was in place, the fans would run whether or not the ignition was on. You might consider replacing the relay with a heavier duty relay or better yet a Fanzilla or John Hervy's relay modification. In the mean time, try striking the relay with the handle of a screwdriver to see if you can get it to turn off. If this works, then it is very likely that you won't get the relay to reliably switch on again. There simply is too much current going to those fans, and the OEM relay is not heavy duty enough to provide it without failing. In the mean time, you might try disassembling the relay and cleaning the contacts with some fine grit sandpaper. I did this with my own car until I could get a Fanzilla. While you have the relay out of the socket, make sure the socket hasn't melted and that the electrical connections are still good. Hope this helps, Walt Tampa, FL ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 4 Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 00:25:59 -0400 From: "Doc" <doctor280@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: RE: first problem - help please! (follow-up) Cooling fans running all the time......I have had this problem when I first purchased my Delorean and this is what I did to correct the problem. In my case the otter switch was bad, it was stuck, closing the circuit which in turn caused the fans to run all the time. I purchased a few new switches from DMC Houston, but after a few days these switches would also fail, resulting in the fans running all the time.(I contacted Houston about the problem and they may have solved the problem with their switches) PJ Gradys sells the Volvo otter switch which does work, but it does have a draw back. It seems that the Volvo switch is not set for the same temp setting as the Delorean. The fans will run longer getting the engine coolant at a temp that will throw the switch to the off position. I was able to locate a OEM Delorean otter switch last year and installed same and have yet to have the problem reoccur. The OEM Delorean otter switch may be a hard item to find, as the original stock has been exhausted, but if you can find one it is the way to go. Maybe someone from the list can help you locate one. Part#100816. Also known as the thermostat switch. If you go to page 6 of my web site you will find details on how to locate...check ....and replace the switch...http://stainlesssteel.freeyellow.com/index.html PS: I never experienced the fans running with the ignition switch in the off position. You may have a different problem entirely. Oct build. Body looks good ding-wise except a 4 inch crease at the edge of the hood. (Ouch. Why do these things always seem to happen to the hood?) "12,123 miles." They say the speedo works. Auto trans. Gray interior in good shape, including seats, dash & binnacle. Looks garage kept. Fascias nice, but they don't have the greatest fit at the body... not sure why. Maybe taken off for painting but not put back on right due to rusty mounting screws? Oh, and it has the original front license plate bracket screwed as per factory directions right into the fascia. Original wheels in good shape. Some cracks in the rear louver. Didn't get to see engine... engine cover is attached to a pair of locking pliers behind the seat. I didn't want to mess with it since I'm not a potential buyer. Original header bottle, but not real yellowed- visible thru vent slots. Current NJ registration. Overall, not concours but certainly worth looking at, if you're in the market for an auto trans D. They're asking $14,900. As I said, I have no personal stake in this car or the dealership, just passing it along to the list. -Wayne 11174 ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 7 Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 01:12:43 -0000 From: "Mike " <mquinto@xxxxxxx> Subject: DeLorean windshields Hello List, I recieved a phone call the other day from my cousin who works at PPG glass in Los Angeles. He informed me that PPG had bought out a company called Viracon. So Viracon is spreading out allot of their old invetory to PPG suppliers. And in the mix of windshields he recieved was 4 DeLorean windshields. Viracon made aftermaket windshields for the DeLorean. I purchased one windshield through my cousins discount, and got it for $52.00. There are three windshields left there. If anyone knows someone who owns a glass shop in the area you can probably obtain the remaining 3. PPG works like this, they give better discounts to their regular customers. If you can manage to get them to sell you one direct, the range would be anywhere from $105. to $200. Another piece of information I recieved is the Delorean is in there database. And found out that Viracon (www.viracon.com)I believe in Ohio has 14 more DeLorean windshields in there inventory. So if you need a windshield I wouldn't hesitate to get them. My cousin also told me that when these types of windshields sit in there warehouse for a long period time, they destroy them. I am not quite sure if viracom still produces them anymore. Good luck to you all. P.S. The spare windshield I have is not for sale, and please don't e-mail me asking to obtain any other windshields through me. I had a problem with my cooling fans.(The first problem since I got my D as a 1st time owner) I thought it was a fan relay problem. Called two Delorean places, got put on hold or the service refused to help me if I didn't know the exact part I needed.(Names of the establishments are witheld so there is no feeding frenzy). Then I called Don Steger at DMC in CA. He was very plesent. He helped me troubleshoot the problem and even handled a couple followup phone calls. Turned out to be a bad fan circuit breaker. An EXTREMELY pleasent experience. Kudos to you Don. You will always be the #1 person I will call when I need parts/advice. I definently recommend others do the same. Don knows what quality means and he deserves business because of it. Nathan E. I have found it impossible to buy a biography of John Delorean from all of the bookstores (Amazon.Com, Barnes & Noble.com, Borders, Booksamillion.com, etc). They all say that all of the biographies of John Delorean are out of print and are unavailable. This is sad, because it makes me feel like the world has forgotten about John Delorean. He is in his mid 70's in quiet retirement. All books about him have also been retired and are out of print. The 20 year old cars that were his legacy are slowly dying due to rust in their frames and parts scarceness, and are stil worth $10,000 less than when they were purchased new. I hope it is ok that I make these sad comments. - W.
