my engine covers actually pops up by its self about 25% of the time. I know
of no easy way to adjust it.
One nice thing about being a smoker. . .I lift up the corner of the engine
cover, put my lighter between the engine cover, and the rear fascia, and can
then pop the cover by myself. . . I helped someone jump start their car a
few months ago, and they asked if the lighter was standard equipment (I
think they were joking) :)

I was wondering: How would you open the engine cover when you are alone? As
you know, I am not a DeLorean expert, but I need two people to open the
engine cover. I lift the louvres up, and they stay up, and when I pull the
engine cover-release, I need someone to lift it up. Is it supposed to pop up
by itself?

Subject: Re: Fanzilla and VOltage problem
Joe,
#1.Have you cleaned all your battery and battery ground connections.
#2. Did you tighten the b+ bolt on the back of the alternator. That's where
all the
brown wires come together, If it's not clean and tight then you will
get a low volt
reading.
#3. The main relay may need the contacts burnished / cleaned. The power for
the
fans when using the Fan Zilla comes thru this relay. I'm not an expert
on the Fan
Zilla, but as I understand it, it just staggers the fans coming on but
does nothing
to lessen the load on the system. Thus you will still have a low volt
reading on
the alternator.
#4. What alternators have you been using. If your swaping out the motorola
and ducy
and they ar all used, then you may be going from bad to bad.
#5. Is the circut breaker for the fans getting hot. If so you may have a fan
motor
going out and it's drawing more current than the system can handle.
Both fans
warm and running will draw about 28 to 30 amps dc.
#6. What about your battery, Is it fully charged. An alternator can't do it's
job without
a fully charged battery.
This is all I can think of for now, and if problem persist then it may be The
Fan Fix and De Lorean 140 alternator time.

The handle to cable latch system is common in many cars. The OEM plastic
handle was a bad idea, fortunately the after market aluminum unit is an
excellent substitute and is readily available from all of the DeLorean parts

Joe,
The Fanzilla will cycle the cooling fans with the compressor, they do not
stay on continuously when in the AC position. If you fans and compressor are
cycling with an "on" time of less than 7 seconds your AC system is low on
freon.
As I mentioned in an earlier post as long as the voltage does not fall below
11.5 at full load during idle you should have nothing to worry about.

Dear List:
While driving to Delaware on Friday afternoon, I spotted a DeLorean traveling
on I95 south in Delaware (I was the guy in the black Acura). The license
plate number was ABF3353, N.J. reg. If you are on the list, it was great
seeing another DeLorean driving! I hope you had fun at the Virginia car show!
Seeing a DeLorean in the wild is awesome! It's been almost 3 years since
seeing one out of total randomness. Though I wasn't driving my DeLorean, I
was able to flash my DOA key ring to the passenger, so hopefully he was able
to tell what it was and not think I was some sort of psycho!
See ya on the road...

Walter,
The main function of the door vents is to de-mist the windows, if fogging or
misting accumulates near the vents it is a result of moisture somewhere in
the air distribution system. This same problem will cause fogging of the
windshield. Finding where the water is entering is not an easy task. An
easier solution is to use Rain-X "no fog" solution on the effected glass. It
is an inexpensive and easy way to eliminate the fogging problem.

Joe,
Actually the readings you are getting are correct. The dash gauge usually
reads about 1 volt lower than the actual alternator output. The 11.5 under
full load at idle is normal and should not cause any problems.

A sticking engine cover is a common problem caused by warpage of the rear
fascia. The cover is adjustable by loosening the hinge nuts and
repositioning the cover as far forward as possible. If this does not solve
the problem the cover can easily be opened by one person by doing the
following.
There is enough room at either the left or right rear corner to pull the
cover up slightly with your index finger, place a wedge (a wallet works
great) between the cover and fascia, than pull the release handle to release
the latch.

Bruce and group,
Yes it is still on the road (Bruce did this to my car when the previous
owner still had it)...although the radiator did finally give out right before
the Cleveland show. According to Dave Bauerle the Jag fan, in conjunction
with the weak original radiator couldn't keep the temperature cool enough and
eventually they wore the radiator out. The fan motor matches almost perfectly
with the other one, but the fan itself is smaller. I purchased PJ Grady's 3
row brass radiator to replace my old one and that solved the hot running
problem without having to replace the fan.

Subject: Re: Re: Cooling fan motor inerchange
Joe,
I agree with you and would prefer to use Deloreaqn parts. However in this
situation my friend had to get the car on the road that day. The fan motor
was a gift from the Jag mechanic. He said we could check his old parts bin.
The motor itself was off an old XJ6. No telling how long the fan had already
been used, but the price was right .Had to remove it from it bracket ( Jag
has a larger bracket). I couldn't remember but something about the motor was
different, thanks to Josh for the correction. The fan blade itself was
smaller. Glad to hear it is still doing great Josh! If we had some down time
on the car that day we would have gotten a Delorean cooling fan from one of
the parts suppliers. Some times you have to make do with what you have on
hand. But DMC Joe's posting is important, support you Delorean parts dealer!
This way we will have a continuious supply of parts for years to come. Ie...
parts = ability to maintain our rides!!!!

Do you want tankzilla readings or normal sender readings?

After searching the archives for several minutes I could
not find the paint codes anywhere. I know it has been
mentioned before.
SO, does anyone happen to know the paint codes for the
front and rear fascias? I have a Aug 81 build D of that
matters.
Thanks,

The previous owner of my D installed a tapered coil spring around the cover
latch where it was riveted in place. Whenever you pull the release arm, the
spring aids in opening the cover. It has never failed and when the cover is
closed, you cannot tell that the spring was installed. The solution was
very simple and even more effective! If anyone wants some pictures of this,
let me know and I will get them for you.

Subject: Moisture accumulation / a/c blower rust
My problem is that the moisture is outside of the car. Florida is usually
humid enough that when the cold air of the a/c chills the window down, then
it drops below the dew point and viola! No visibility through the window.
With the broken air vent on the passenger door, cold air blows inside the
door and causes dew to settle all over the door (well, more than usual.)
After an evening drive, I parked in my garage and noticed water dripping off
of the door handle. And it was perfectly dry outside! (My passenger door
has the replacement aluminum handle.)
I bought Rain-X a long time ago and just never got around to putting it on.
Since my windows are tinted, I don't think I'm supposed to put Rain-X on it.
But the moisture problem is on the OUTSIDE of the car.
Now I do have another moisture problem inside the car. The a/c blower motor
fills up with condensation and rusts the bearings up. The condensate drain
seems to be working fine. My problem is moisture accumulating on the
outside of the a/c system, the fiberglass/plastic housing and the duct work.
Is there any way to keep water out of the a/c blower motor? And is there
any way to keep water from dripping off of the duct work and into the
passenger foot well?
And why to you tell me about Rain-X, yet you neglect to answer my e-mail
about the used/reconditioned head light switch you had PJ Grady send me?
They told me that it was supposed to be a new switch, but it is obviously
used. Last time I called them, they had no record that they ever sent me a
headlight switch. Oh well, no night driving for me for a while....
