Check your pulley alignment!
Use a yardstick and make sure all of the pulleys are lined up properly.
I've seen many different types of cars do that exact same thing (black
dust everywhere) when the pulleys aren't aligned correctly. The motion
of the pulleys completely saws through the belt until it simply snaps.
Being a Delco alternator, it may not line up exactly at first. Usually
you can use washers to space it to fit correctly. Also, check that when
they repaired your alt. that they did not replace the pulley facing the
wrong direction. That's the most common cause of misalignment.

Subject: Stainless Steel Braided Clutch Line
Today the garage that handles my DeLorean installed a new stainless steel
braided clutch line from DMC Houston. The original plastic one was removed.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE!
I imagined it would work great but this is like having a brand new car!
The old clutch pedal was hard as kicking a brick wall! After installing the
new updated clutch line its like pushing the clutch of a modern 2000 car!
I really recommend it! So if your clutch is stiff as #¤%&"¤& then order a
new stainless steel braided clutch line now!
I never ever imagined that the difference and improvement would be so great!
A well-worthy investment! Man, this car rocks!!!

Is it possible to remove paint from a DeLorean providing that no Bondo or
otherwise was used on the car? How much would a process like this usually
cost and is it recommended? It seems DeLoreans can be obtained at much
cheaper prices if they are painted, so I'm wondering if its worth paying
$7500 for a painted one and then removing it.

I am curious about the '83's and the colors of their interiors. Does anyone
know when the company started using gray and black? Which color was
predominant? I have seen the pics in the vault of the '83 with the black
seats. Did any come with gray seats, black middle console, black dash &
binnacle, gray/black door inserts or any other combinations? Are there are
any owners that can post pics or comment on this subject?

I had the same concerns the first time I took my DeLorean on a long trip.
I'd had several parts replaced and thought I had all of the bugs worked out.
We drove it from SC to the Autofest Nationals '99 in Evansville, Indiana.
After the show we went to the Auburn-Cord-Dusenberg museum in Auburn,
Indiana. All total, the DeLorean racked up 1300 miles. The angle drive died
on the way back through Kentucky, so I had to gauge the speed on the tach.
In June we drove it to and from Cleveland, and it never missed a beat. My
DeLorean seems to enjoy long trips better than the short weekend runs it
usually gets. Make sure all your fluid levels are good, and you should be
fine if you've taken care of the car.

I have some mystery wires in my engine compartment, thought someone might be
able to tell me what they are....
By the water overflow tank/alternator, I have a WHITE wire and a
turquoise/yellow (blue/yellow, maybe?) The blue/yellow wire is either tapped
or is a double wire, which is connected at a 3-way joint to a blue wire-
it's definitely a hack job.
Inside the relay compartment, there is a thick brown wire with a
connector... I know there are a few brown ones in there but maybe someone
can decypher my garble....

The factory may have kept records on this, but none have surfaced to
date that I am aware of.
I have heard of '83 model cars that had combinations as you describe,
but never actually seen any. Any model with a VIN after 10578 with a
black interior (black seats, console, dash, binnacle, door panels)
will have a strip of grey carpeting (trimmed in grey vinyl) at the
very bottom edge of the door panel. I have yet to see a door panel
that was properly trimmed in black vinyl at this point on a
post-10578 VIN car.
There were three different colors/types of carpet. A fuzzy 'charcoal'
(black interior cars up to 10578), a fuzzy 'grey' (grey interior cars
up to 10578) and a smooth 'grey' that was used for both black and
grey interior cars from 10579.

the pedal is still pretty stiff. It's the only manual transmission car I
drive, so I have nothing to compare it to, though a friend drove it and said
it was brutal. He's a little guy, but drives/flies everything from a Harley
to an airplane. I figured it was normal. (I did that upgrade right after
getting the car, when I was still reacquainting myself with a manual trans,
so I can't really recall any before and after difference.) What about it,
list... is that normal, or out of adjustment? I do hear a different sound
when the pedal is depressed. I hope that doesn't mean my clutch is starting
to go- and somebody adjusted it to compensate... does it? =8-O

Make sure you do a cooling system test, I don't know if you replaced your
cooling hoses yet but if you pressurize your cooling system to 15 pounds and
it holds for 15 minutes you should be ok. I usually pack a 10mm and 15 mm
wrench, pliers, screw drivers, duct tape, flashlite, and road flares.
Fortuately I've never needed any of them.

I found that replacing the clutch, including lubricating the clutch
fork pivot point and throwout bearing sliding surfaces made the most
difference. The original poster on this must have had some friction
in the slave cylinder (or a pinched line), but the most vulnerable
place for clutch friction is the TO bearing and the fork pivot ball.
In mine, the pivot ball was completely dry and the rubber seal was
missing. If you analyze the design, you can see that any water that
gets in from above thru the engine cover can run right down the
clutch fork to the pivot. The rubber flap on the bellhousing is about
useless.
Unfortunately both require removing the trans to access.

Dear List,
Okay, I've got one I haven't had before...While driving my DeLorean
for the past couple of weeks, It has been making a single "clunking"
noise when I make turns. (left or right doesn't seem to make a
difference) It feels like something is slipping up front when it
occurs.
I had a rebuilt steering rack installed by Dave Bauerle about a year
ago, but otherwise the front suspension hasn't been touched in awhile.
Could this be a symptom of bad shocks or is it something else?
Most importantly, is this car safe to drive until I can get it
checked out?

It's funny to hear someone referring to a 20-year-old car as being recently
"broken-in". :-) My only reservation about having such a low-miles car
would be it's treatment over the last 20 years: Was it well maintained?
Have all of the Safety Notices been applied?
The Delorean is actually a very reliable car. The large number of technical
discussions you see here are typical for any car this old. I would take a
small amount of tools on any long trip, regardless of the car (extra fuses,
etc.).

After posting the message below, I sat with Excel for 15 minutes or
so and came up with a crude template that performs this function. I
still would prefer to see a web-based solution just so that it can be
made available to more people.
I've only run a few VINs through it, but it seems to work correctly.

Why would you want to calculate a check digit, you ask? I needed a
complete, valid VIN number to check the title history of a DeLorean
at http://www.carfax.com, and all the seller knew was the last five
digits of the VIN. By using the formula provided by Rob Lamrock, I
was able to calculate the check digit and get the VIN report I needed.

I think it's all relative. My left leg is 20% larger than my right from all
those clutch exercises I get to do in the DMC, but maybe Stian's clutch was
REALLY bad before the work was done. I used to think my passenger door was
difficult to close, but I replaced the driver's side strut with a new one
that has MUCH more lift, and now that other door seems light as a feather.

Since we are on the subject of clutches, I have a question for
everyone. Instead of installing a SS braided clutch line for the
entire length of the car, couldn't you run a length of steel tubing
(same tubing used for the brakes) along the chassis? At the ends of
the steel tube would be short SS Braided (custom ones at least) lines
going to the master and slave cylinders. It would make alot more
sense in doing this. You would practically eliminate any expansion on
the clucthline and would be alot more reliable. If I am wrong, please
correct me and explain to me why? I am thinking of doing this since
you can buy tubing at any autoparts store and flare the ends with any
type of connectors on them. I also know a place that will custom make
any hydraulic hose you want at any length with any type of connectors
on them.
